Lances’ Right is one of the most sought-after waves on the planet. And for good reason. A place that offers the chance to score the wave of your life in the form of a bright blue roll-in freight train. A wave that everyone wants a piece of. Today, Lance’s Right attracts surfers from around the world and with dozens of camps and charter boats, you won’t be surfing it alone anytime soon. But in the early 90’s, surf exploration in the Ments was a relatively new concept, and Lance Knight stumbled upon one of the greatest waves on earth. This video tells that story…

I arrived at Lance’s Right aboard the Indies Trader III in 2002. There was nobody out and it was pumping. We took turns sharing perfect waves all day. It was one of the best surfing days of my life. 🤙🏼🏝️

@@markkindermannart4028 Martin Daly was not on that trip. We had a very capable Australian captain who knew exactly where to go and who was also an excellent surfer. We traveled all the way from Java over 1000 miles and often surfed remote islands with nobody around for miles. 🤙🏼

I surfed it several times when the hollow tree was still on the beach, starting in 1998 or thereabouts. It's a unique setup, where the swell has to wrap in quite a bit to hit the reef, which causes the double-up on bigger sets. I went out there on the SV Katika, and the Captain referred to the inside, nearly exposed at low tide reef slab as "The Surgeons Table"! And so it was. Perfect surf spot, with a "Keyhole" deep spot to anchor in on the tail end of the shoulder, in a beautiful bay. There were no camps or crowds, and we hiked in to the little local village between surfs, where we found a place with coconuts for sale. The locals scampered up Coconut Palms, and scored us the most awesome fresh coconut milk ever. Old Shaman dude paddled a stone age style outrigger canoe out to our boat for a visit, in full on feathered head dress and face paint, totally OG, same as hundreds of years ago. Oh yeah, the wave's as good as it looks, and the whole setup had a "time traveled to twelve hundred years ago" magic vibe. It was epic. Thanks for the great tale of its discovery!

Went on a boat trip back in my pro bodyboarding days to the Ments. This was 1995 or '96. We rocked up at HTs before dark one day and no one was there. It was huge and maxing out, but we rode it until dark. The next morning, it had dropped a bit, but was still firing, then Indies Trader II pulled up with the likes of Shane Dorian, Pat O'Connell and others and it was just us and them for the rest of that day. I can't imagine that place with 50 guys out. I think I'd be heartbroken if I went back these days!

Indo is full of good waves. In the 70s it was a risky place to explore surf spots. The possibility of injury was higher because the boards were pretty terrible for fast hollow waves. There was almost no medical services and zero chance of getting out expeditiously. However there were no crowds but suspicious and not so friendly locals.

No dickhead, he went there because he met Peter Troy who told him to find his “own Nias” - when Lance’s uncle and namesake died, he left his nephew his charts of Indies. Which he’d look at for a decade. When Lance Knight set out looking for a ship for LHI (the same ship of which I’m currently sitting in the wheelhouse) he figured it was the only chance he’d have to go out. Lance shook hands to keep the place a secret, he didn’t tell anyone where it was and his legend only came about after other people let the lid off. There were no local surfers there prior and the only westerners the locals remember was a boat of non surfers and a missionary that got boiled and eaten a century or so prior.
@Polaroidsfromthemystic
@Polaroidsfromthemystic 3 месяца назад
Not sure if RU-vid censored my reply but just incase I’ll write it again without name calling. For your information, Lance kept the joint a secret under a pact of secrecy. And yes , so many more dudes will be coming to all the places you show and tell about.
