For anyone curious about how the Arizona thing works, Arizona does not recognize daylight savings. The native american reservation partially inside of it does though, while the Arizona enclave inside of said reservation does not, and the reservation enclave inside of the Arizona enclave does.

If I recall, I believe I've heard that Arizona's timezone sectioning is even weirder than it first appears. The state does not follow daylight saving. But some native American reservations do. But within those reservations, there are small chunks of land (and I've even heard it's as granular as specific buildings) which are owned by government, thus being state or federal property, thus NOT following daylight saving. So a building is ignoring daylight saving, contained within a small-ish chunk of land that IS following daylight saving, contained within a state that IS NOT following daylight saving, contained within a country that IS following it.

Small detail, but actually in 1880 time in Ireland was set at Dublin Mean Time, which was GMT minus twenty five minutes. This lasted until after the 1916 Rising, when it was decided to standardise them to make telegram communication more convenient. So Britain and Ireland have not had the same time since 1880, just since 1916.

Oh man, the first 16 seconds aren't just super-hilarious, they were well-designed and clearly went through multiple phases of creation (or the person who wrote the script is just a genius.) -The fact that it's both steam-powered and digital, with a printer read-out--what a frankensteinian humongous invention -"Let me just decode the..." not finishing this sentence helps to add to the realism AS WELL AS not having to nail down the watch "technology" to anything too specific -The fact that he had to take out his phone to decode the time, when the time is on his phone anyways -The success sound indicating the system is working as expected -The fact that the precision is only, like up to a 1/6th of the day. Morning, Noon, Afternoon, Evening, Night, etc. -The pride in which he announces the "time". Beautiful.

In South Dakota, the Missouri River forms part of the time zone border between Central and Mountain time. This puts the state capital of Pierre (pronounced "peer") on Mountain Time, whereas the contiguous "sister city" of Fort Pierre is on Central Time. Since a lot of people commute from one part of the metro area to the other, you can imagine how confusing that might be for scheduling events.

I live in Indiana and here, we have towns in two different time zones and not every county follows daylight savings. It's incredibly confusing and any time you drive to another part of the state, you have to check what time it actually is there first or you'll be late/early.

2:24 The reason why Arizona is like that is because reservations have a lot of independence to decide on local laws. Arizona doesn't observe daylight saving time. But the Navajo Nation does observe it. Technically that's not part of Arizona but it's own thing. It exists as an exclave inside more states that do observe it. The Hopi though, the enclave inside the Navajo Nation, do obverse daylight saving times. I visited the Arizona part of the Navajo nation during DST, and businesses on either side of the border will post their hours in both times, and basically anything scheduled uses both. They usually call it Navajo and Arizonan time.

Two points RE: Kiribati 1) It was Dec 30th they skipped, not Dec 31st. 2) The reason was due to trade with trade with Australia but due to administration within the country itself. Kiribati is made up of 3 Island groups, the Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Island. The 1st 2 groups were to the east of the International Date Line, the Line was to the West. Therefore if the Gilbert or Phoenix Island wanted to liase with the Line Islands they could only do so for 4 days of the week due to the International Date Line. On Dec 30th, the Line Islands moved to west of the International Date Line joining the other two Island groups as part of Kiribati. Samoa was the one that moved due to trade with AUS/NZL.

I just watched this again, and I found it quite an entertaining look into silly time zones! Thanks for the video!

Having been born and raised in Arizona, I have lived this my whole life. The split time zones in the north are because the Navajo tribe are split across multiple states and chose to be on daylight savings and Arizona does not. The insert inside that stays on Arizona time is the Hopi tribe, a different reservation. What you didn’t note is there is actually a Navajo nation tribal island inside the Hopi reservation. So it’s possible to have az time, daylight time, az time and back to daylight time in an hour drive.

Friends of mine had three boys, and to help get them out the house for school on time, the kitchen clock was always set 5 minutes fast. They never told the boys, but eventually they twigged and it became known as Sinderby Time. (That's the name of their village). Even though the boys have all left home for pastures new, they still use Sinderby Time.

Ever heard about Baarle-Nassau at the Dutch & Belgian border? It is a super complicated, rather unique border. You may be interested in it!

The Arizona time zone issue comes about for a number of reasons: - in the northern summer, Arizona (the state) does not observe daylight savings, unlike the rest of the states in Mountain Time Zone. - Arizona has a large number of Native American communities, particularly in the northeast of the state. - The Navajo nation choose to observe daylight savings - The Hopi nation choose not to (like the majority of Arizona) - The Hopi have two distinct land areas, while the Navajo have one large area, and a series of small enclaves (and exclaves) in the southern part of their lands. So as they stated in the video, you can drive in and out of different time zone within a short distance during the American summer. This plays havoc with tourists attempting to visit Native American attractions at appointed tour times during this period.

One Important Fact which I think is missed, is the Fact, that because of Kiribati's weird Timezones like UTC+14, sometimes there are 3 different days of the week at the same time

I went my first 3 years of school grades 1 to 3 in a small town of College Corner, Ohip / West College Corner, Indiana. The school grounds were in two state, 3 counties, 4 townships. The centerline of the Gym was also was the Ohio/ Indiana State Line. Indiana students had to buy their school books but the Ohio students got them free. The State Line was also the Eastern/Central Standard time zone line. On one side of a street in the town was 1 hour different from the otherside of the street.

I feel somewhat ripped that you didn't mention Australia's colossally embarassing time zone situation where we go during the non-DST times from three sensible time zones, to during DST winding up at about eleven.

In Tibet, they simply get up at 11am, then work from 1pm to 10pm, then go to bed at 3am. It might sound weird to us, but if you had been doing this all your life, you wouldn't feel that it's weird at all. Having a single time zone across the country simplifies things a lot, because instead of saying "Let's meet online at 3pm Beijing Time", they only have to say "Let's meet at 3.". Xinjiang has set its own time zone since before the national one was declared, that's why it uses two time zones.

2:16 Arizonan here to explain further. The state doesn't go through daylights savings time in general because we live in a super sunny desert. Atleast most of us do. We are always at UTC -7, but the neighboring states may or may not be UTC -7 depending on the season. In the summer, the US Pacific Time Zone is at UTC-7, so Arizona shares the same time as Pacific Coastal cities such as Seattle, Las Vegas (which is a couple hundred miles deep in an inland desert), Los Angeles, and San Francisco. But in the winter, the US Mountain Time Zone is the one at UTC-7, so Arizona shares the same time as alpine cities such as Denver, El Paso (which is more of a Mexican border city nowhere close to impressively tall mountains), Salt Lake City, or Albuquerque. But in the northeast, there are two Native American reservations to note: the Navajo Nation and the Hopi Reservation. If you lads ever visited a place such as Antelope Canyon or Monument Valley which attracts many visitors across the world, then chances are you have been inside the Navajo Nation. But the Hopi reservation, which is completely surrounded by the Navajo Nation, is a whole bunch of fuck-all, with maybe like 10,000 residents at most (while Navajo Nation has about 160,000 people, and the no-DST parts of Arizona is basically like 97% of the state population anyhow). The Hopi Reservation is completely inside Arizona. The Navajo Nation, while mostly in Arizona, has some sections that are in the neighboring states of New Mexico and Utah. NM and Utah are always on Mountain Time Zone, and they recognize daylights saving times, which means as explained before they are UTC-7 in winter, and UTC-6 in summer. This means that to maintain consistency across the entire reservation, the Navajo Nation recognizes DST, putting it in line with Mountain Time Zone all-year and therefore putting it one hour ahead of Phoenix, the Arizonan state capital, in the summer. Due to the sparse and isolating geography of Arizona's northeast, with very few roads and a whole bunch of deserty plateaus, mesas, and mountains, the Hopi Reservation is completely surrounded by the Navajo Nation, and all roads leading out of the Hopi Reservation must go through the Navajo Reservation. Even highways connecting Arizona to Colorado, Utah, or New Mexico have to pass through the Navajo Nation, mandating crazy time jumps everywhere. I'm not a Native American (Navajo, Hopi, or otherwise), so the rationale behind the Hopi Reservation deciding to stay with mainland Arizona is lost on me other than vague historical rivalries between the Navajo and Hopi tribes, even tho by all means the Hopi Reservation should follow the Navajo Nation into officially joining the yes-DST Mountain Time Zone.

My favourite - and nearest - time zone oddity is the ferry crossing from Quebec into Newfoundland. St. Barbe in Newfoundland is on UCT-3:30 and Blanc Sablon in Quebec is on UCT-5:00. If you leave Blanc Sablon and head east on the hour and a half ferry ride to St. Barbe you arrive at the same time you left. If you go west you arrive 3 hours after you left on your 1 and a half hour ferry ride.

In 2010 I flew from Apia in Samoa to Auckland New Zealand A 4 hour flight leaving Apia at 10pm arriving in Auckland at 2am but missed a whole day in between. Time wise took about 28 hours

Interesting choice by the mapmaker to have Dawson City as the Yukon's representative on the time zone map. Also, one odd time zone thing heard regularly on CBC Radio and TV is on the lines of "Tonight at 7PM, 7.30 in Newfoundland." Due to the island being only 30 minutes adrift from the Maritimes and Labrador.

Fun fact about time zones in China: people in the western part go to work later to solve the unitary time zone problem. Us humans who control time.
