I gave Eightsleep a serious thought when I was buying my new mattress. However, requiring a subscription for full functionality on a multi-thousand dollar mattress COVER was a deal breaker. Then you consider that most MATRESSES cost less than their COVER and you realize just how much fucking profit these guys are raking in. Sorry, not sorry.
@@preferredimage Yeah, I was out when I noticed that not only is a subscription required, it is per person. So a subscription for me and another subscription for my girlfriend!? Sorry, but this is just silly. Subscription for what!? To cover the costs of cloud infrastructure? Just make it all local! Phone app and mattress WiFi connected, no cloud and thus no subscription required, is how it should be. I am so completely and utterly out.
just imagine how much money they spend on advertising. They pay all the big youtubers to make videos about their product. Combined they have special ad videos on like 50M subs, and this only from the ones I am subbed to (MKBHD, Mrwhostheboss, JerryRig, Unbox Therapy... more?)
I expected better from this channel. I go to the product website and see I'm required to buy a one-year 'membership'. A membership to use a bed?! Give me a break! Please, never again lead us down a path like this. You're better than this! I can't imagine the promoted company will be in business long term. Cool idea, but bad execution.
Why did you expect better from this channel? Have you seen the other sponsors? Also they've been in business for like 10 years I don't see them going anywhere.
Total AD BAIT!!! Nothing I hate worse than paying for RU-vid Premium so I don't have to watch ads. Then have some money hungry RU-vidr put an ad in their Video!!!
I wouldn't have a problem with the price if it weren't for the absolutely RIDICULOUS subscription. I'm surprised Zack agreed to support this company and advertise their product
You also forgot to include probably the most significant cost of all, their monthly subscription cost to unlock all of the features that you just mentioned in the video. Pretty shady if you ask me, especially from them sponsoring the episode. Sponsored deceit doesn't look very good.
Agreed 100%. This is an awesome product, but I'm not going to take the risk of the company making arbitrary decisions and changes to what I can and can't do with the product.
I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if people could reverse engineer how their cloud works and do a local 'cloud' on home assistant. Similar to how local tuya works I refuse to use something that relies on a cloud.
This is super cool, I just wish it didn't require a subscription. I don't want to have to pay monthly for a good night sleep or have the chance of this all going away when the company decides to stop supporting it.
@@lhurley1989it kills me that we are all starting to just accept this stuff. You can buy a BMW with heated seats but if you want to actually use the heated seats you got to pay every month. Now our mattresses are subscription models? They are clearly doing a bait and switch where the pro version has features that you really want so you will end up paying every single month for the rest of your life.
@@Aristocrafiedthe regular allows you to set the temperature. That's it. Everything else is behind the subscription: sleep tracking, alarms, sleep state controlled temperature. Everything.
So a cover for a bed cost $2500 and I can't use said cover without a subscription? 8 sleep is pushing this product heavily with tech influencers (I imagine for free) but I doubt a ton of people would actually pay this much for a sleep cover.
I was thinking about where the data is processed and stored, since it needs a subscription its mostly processed and stored outside of the pod and I DON'T LIKE THAT and when I saw the app it reminded me of the fitbit app (part of google now) it has the same graphics and stuff.
Hopefully all the angry comments of people annoyed that he didn't even talk about the subscription will make him realize how much we value that kind of transparency
I completely agree with you and hope for that too. I rarely comment anything on RU-vid but the huge lack of transparency and view opposite of his usual videos is concerning !
I mean he also advertised a security product that leaked all of your facial recognition photos on the web despite it apparently being "local" only. The video wasn't removed despite it happening in the same week as the promotion. Really everyone should distrust any and all advice coming from this channel and just enjoy the regular content if thats your thing.
I'm sure there's a lot of money on offer from the company and I appreciate Zach's other videos enough to say he deserves to cash in on sponsor deals now and then. Still, he's been really good in the past when calling out companies like Apple and Samsung for their anti-consumer practices. I was really shocked that he didn't make any mention at all about the appalling subscription requirement and generally terrible business model. Again, no hate to him at all, but I expected better
I'm not going to lie after watching this I am going to be questioning every opinion he gives... I understand that he can afford it just fine but most of us are not able to buy a $2,000 mattress cover and pay every single month just to use it... That is shady and if their cloud goes down it turns into trash overnight
@@TGMisKillingTheMiddleClass I do appreciate that he at the very least mentioned the price (even if he didn't mention the subscription), a lot of youtubers don't even mention how much money their products they advertise cost and it's the most annoying thing ever
man this company must be paying youtubers a lotttt of money to advertise their 'way too expensive for 95% of the population' product. The fact that there's a subscription is even more insane
Think about the return on investment when the covers are around $2,000 each. If just 100 of his millions of subscribers buy it They could pay him tens of thousands for this advertisement and make out like bandits. I'm kind of ashamed of him for promoting this knowing full well that is a subscription based mattress cover
@@chiragnegi6276 Yeah, I can agree with that. I wanted to get one despite the subscription, but when the company removed the API access and this way eliminate any meaningful home automation integration, I simply decided to not get one. Sometimes I feel that companies invest a lot of money to support an API just for the product price, but 8sleep charge a lot of money monthly, from that I think this should be doable
@@JaggSwag230 Because they want you to get used to the features that you'll lose if you drop it. It's a type of sales pitch instead of upselling you're basically "downselling". People typically have an idea of what they're looking for in a product, in this case it's a means to cool your mattress directly, which EightSleep does. BUT it'll also be able do all this neat biometric and automation so you don't have to manually. That could draw a lot of people in, and you just explain how it's just a little extra money a month or they can just get the Eight Sleep alone and they'll have to do everything manually. With the required 1 year sub as part of the price tag you'll have people cancel and then realize all the neat features are gone, but they already spent all this money so they may sign up again.
8 sleep is fineee but for 3.5 k you shouldnt need a yearly subscription just too change the temp of the bed, the sleep tracking can be locked under a sub but the basic functions should be included in the overly expensive price
It's an awesome. I would 100% buy one almost instantly. But the only more impressive thing than the bed is the fact that you have to subscribe to get realistically most of the features you'd want! I understand developers cost money but wow...
Remember when you used to buy something and you actually owned it? If their company shuts down in their cloud goes away your multi-thousand dollar bed cover could be useless. I can't believe people are starting to accept this from companies. Adobe, BMW, every smart home company
@@TGMisKillingTheMiddleClass it's absolutely crazy! For the pleasure of me paying you money every month, I don't own my data, you probably sell it, I get increased delay on anything I want as it has to go over the cloud, also if you run out of money one day my bed no longer turns on haha. If you asked them, what happens if they die they'll probably just say, oh we're not going out of business...
I stopped watching this 3 mins in when I read about the subscription requirements in the comments - I'm not a fan of this pricing model unless there are free upgrades and maintenance - like gimme a new one every year, etc. Manufacturers - how about making things that can be upgraded every so often online but don't need a cloud service to run. Right to repair is a real thing we should all be fighting for!
"A membership is required for the first 12 months, and covers two separate users per Pod." "($180/288 billed annually)" That's an additional 10% of the total cost. Not a huge deal, but some questions remain. What happens after the first 12 months if I don't want to continue paying $200-300? Will my 2 or 5 year warranty then get cancelled? Will I still be able to set the temperatures manually? I'm with Linus on hating subscriptions.
@@dajavaxLinus still criticised the subscription model and isn’t afraid to talk negatively on sponsor spots. Like with the ‘waterproof’ shoes that he always states that he disagrees with those claims as he says nothing is fully waterproof.
They say in their material if you choose to cancel the membership after a year you can still set the temperatures manually but you lose all the other functionality of the cover which is a crock of shit. If you purchase a product you should have access to all functions without having to pay for a subscription.
As if they're cloud will even be around in a couple years. These $2,000 mattress covers will be trash overnight. Even if you let them bleed you dry every month for their subscription up until that point
I considered getting this a while back, but I blacklisted it when I saw the mandatory subscription. After further research, I found the BedJet, a devise that blows cool or hot air under your blanket for $500. That's still too high for me, but it's better than what these people are asking. I eventually settled on propping up my duvet with a back pillow and blowing air directly into the bed with a $100 fan.
Had to rewatch the video to double check myself after checking out the website. Deeply disappointed the lack of mention of a subscription to use the product. Making the cost that much more, or a very expensive water bed cover.
the fact that you buy it, then need to subscribe to it is a hard no from me, shame on you for neglecting to mention that part, you are better than this.
That subscription amount is ridiculous for what it does, and $240 a year after you've just given them $2000+ (so 10% per year of the actual cost!) is just an insult.
I would seriously like as my body produces the same amount of heat as a critical-sized piece of plutonium, especially when sleeping…. But the subscription is an immediate now.
I’m sure it costs a pretty penny to make one but for the price of one bed cover I could redo, refresh and outfit my entire room (not from U.S.) with enough cash to spare for a quality AC unit… and a tv to boot. As for the subscription, it’s a slap in the face, after a year you could buy an Apple Watch with the same sleep tracking functions and plenty more to boot. Every other control should just be folded into the heat pump which circulates water. I know an app can be convenient - I have a Chinese spy fan which I can rotate and adjust from my phone but it’s an option, I can still do everything by just clicking a button on the damn thing itself. Such a good idea, the execution is garbage.
oh, yeah, in the US, a lot of house renovation and AC's are dirt cheap. In other countries, the price for this is "reasonable" as everything's expensive, but in the US it's about 3 times overpriced.
Every single feature they say you loose without a membership, can be done locally on your phone while it's charging. They 110% don't do that in the app, because why loose a revenue source when they can extort the customer. On top of that the pricing is absolutely insane! Both for membership and the physical product.
I'm super happy that China knows every detail of my face, and my voice, and every detail of my internet searches and history by using my phone. And now due to fancy technology they also know my exact sleep schedule, and heart rate. So great to know China is always looking out for me
I went ahead and purchased a Purple mattress shortly after your factory tour and quickly fell in love with it. Your video on those mattresses helped influence my decision since it addressed most of the things I valued in a mattress. I believe that someone else might have that sort of experience based off of this video... If it weren't for this mattress functions being proprietary and subscription tied. For something as expensive and influential to everyday life as a mattress, losing all of that if the company goes out of business is a major downside.
I've had the pod 3 cover on top of a natural latex mattress I bought for a month. I'd say, if you're not an athlete, or if you don't have trouble falling asleep, you probably won't notice a big difference. I've always had trouble falling asleep, bordering on insomnia occasionally. According to my fitness band, the cover reduced my fall asleep time from 32 minutes avg (30-60 minutes min/max) to 22 minutes avg (21-25 minutes min/max). Even on days where I only sleep for 4 hours I feel much better, the whole-day feeling of "dread" isn't there anymore, it's just "regular tired" now. That being said, it's a great piece of tech and I wish it'll come down in price soon.
There's a million things you can do starting today to improve your sleep just as much if not more. Cold shower before bed (at least your face) gives about half the benefit I got from 8sleep. Monitoring/cutting caffeine is also very important - find out your caffeine half life absorption, you'll be surprised how much variability there is in the general population, it depends a lot on your genetics. I had both blood work & a genetic test done and I know that my half-life is about 8 hours, but it can depend on a lot of factors too, for example if I drink too much caffeine, the window is longer. Actually for some people, it can be the opposite, the more caffeine you drink, the quicker you metabolise it. As a general rule, cut any caffeine before 16:00. At worst 18:00, if you drink past 18:00 your sleep quality will be heavily impacted. Ideally aim for no caffeine after 12:00 or 14:00. Also wait at least an hour after waking up before taking caffeine, and get at least 30 minutes of sunlight or sunlight-equivalent before your first caffeine intake. Keeping dosage low is also important, remember it's caffeine half-life, so if you take too much it will affect your sleep/stress the same way even if you only take it at a reasonable hour. It will keep cortisol levels on a natural level. I thought I had anxiety issues so I went to the psychiatrist. Turns out I was just overdosing myself on caffeine every day! Generally you want to keep your caffeine intake at ~80mg if you take it daily. But if you're an athlete or you're trying to lose weight, you can take up to 300mg on a short-term basis. When you exercise, you lose caffeine a little faster through sweat + burning fat. All that being said, the thing that is great about 8sleep is that you're offloading changing your habits onto technology. You get to sleep better, even if you drank way too much coffee and totally ruined your sleep schedule. It's been amazing at upping my mood, and because I sleep better, I both have more time in the morning and overall it's been a big impact on my quality of life. I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's just a bit too expensive, it was too expensive even for me, had to get financing for it. But it'll pay off in my mental healthy. After all if I lose it, I'll have no income, and any income is better than no income.
Also, if you have sensory issues I'd advice against it. My girfriend tried it once and absolutely hated it. I solved it by putting a mattress topper on her half, but it's not ideal either way. And this with with the Pod cover 3, which supposedly has a "significantly improved feel" over the Pod 2. If that's "significantly improved", no wonder the Pod 2 had so many returns. I don't have nearly as many sensory issues as my girlfriend, I think I pretty much fall in the "normal" range albeit on a tail end of it (certain foams give me the ick, and I have the urge to wash my hands the instant they get greasy/dirty, but it's not like overbearing or something that takes much energy to ignore/overcome). Even for me it took 2 nights to get used to the feel of the "grid". I actually enjoy it now, but just FYI. That being said, they have a 30 day return window and from what I've read nobody had an issue returning it Oh yes and before I forget, there have been numerous reports of people getting leaks. Supposedly with the latest version of the Pod 3 they "solved" the issues, but who knows. I hope I never get a leak. The subscription thing is bullshit. The autopilot hasn't been 100% worth it for me yet, maybe it's placebo but on the nights that I tried it with the autopilot off, I felt like I slept better. If it weren't for the included 5 year warranty, as well as the fear of leaks, I would stop paying it.
Zack had me completely sold before he even mentioned the price. I clicked the link to look at ordering... then I saw the subscription and thought "okay cool that's fine I guess, so where's the price?" And then I saw it.... For Australians, it's over $3500 for the queen. That's enormous.
Me seeing the thumbnail: “Please don’t be another eight sleep sponsorship, please don’t be another eight sleep sponsorship” *opens the video description* “Damn it”
Great video as always, Zach. I can't help but think of the billions of people around the world who sleep like a baby every night on a $100 bed (matress and cover included). This is a good example of a product for people with too much disposable income.
Yeah so i looked it up and it looks like all the features are membership only. You can heat/cool matress without a membership, but have to remember to turn it off manually. So it's a very expensive crappy heat/cool blanket if you find yourself not wanting to pay $20 a month. I wonder if Jerry knew?
I was with you right up to the $2000 price tag mention..... its cool, i get it, they are using simple tech to sell a keen product but damn.... My bed and matress didnt cost that much.... in fact my last two beds and matresses didnt cost that much!
Thank you everyone for warning me about the subscription so I don’t waste my time! A monthly subscription for a mattress *cover* that’s more expensive than any *full bed* I've ever bought is just insanity.
Would love to see the number of dislikes on this. Seems everyone is disappointed that you would support such a scummy company with a subscription requirement for a several thousand dollar product
We ordered one on 1/6/2024 and just waiting for it to show up. This order was 100% based upon the review and technology in the cover. Yes it is expensive but to potentially get better sleep I am all in.
I really was impressed and was about to give this a shot until i got to the 264quid yearly membership... My bike tracking sub is a third of this and offers far more functions And what happens when the servers go down??
Just wait. Give it 10 years and no one will own anything. We will all be renting and working until we die, every single aspect of our life will be a subscription Capitalism is working as intended
The wayback machine shows the when they first started making mattresses (at least according to the way back machine, their website only being active since 2015) but when they first started pricing at $235. Kinda crazy that their price just kept going up and up for the same quality of product. Almost like they were trying to see just how much money they squeeze out of its consumers.
Yeah why just sleep with the bed sheets when you can use up extra energy and have a blanket... I might cool down my house to 30 in summer to wear jumpers and heat up to 90 in winter to wear shorts while we're at it !
I own the prior v2 version of this and have owned their products since it was a Kickstarter, and yes, am grandfathered re subscription. But it's a freaking amazing setup and I cannot imagine sleeping without it. Spouse has medical issues and so individual warming/cooling for each side has been amazing. The Kickstarter version was much cruder and had issues, I had a leak with V2 that we spotted early (it's not a lot of water) and a replacement came without argument and it's been flawless. It's allowed us to adjust house heating that saves money as bed is perfect when we go to bed. Don't use the alarms, don't need them. But I'm no doubt going to give V3 or whatever their latest version is a nod when it's time to upgrade. But sure, that's just me and I'm sure other options are better for others re cost and comfort. Just glad we have this available as it really does work great for us. YMMV.
Dumb question (and please, don't get this wrong): isn't the fact that your wife can't move her legs somehow tricking the system into thinking she's sleeping better? In the end, half of her body is in deep sleep the whole time. If that's the case, she's somehow cheating on your challenge 😜
I guess another channel became blinded by greed and corporate money. You are paying 2 thousand dollars for product and they expect me to pay 15 dollars a month to be able control what i own. Absolute joke. I guess they have zack and llt who I never expected to take money from greed corporations.
Also, according to eight sleep, the pod 3 does not require distilled water or hydrogen peroxide anymore because it ‘has an internal cleanser’. Not sure what they mean, but I started with Pod 1, then 2, and always use distilled and H2O2 on them and my new pod 3.
I've seen chinese smart bed and it had hundreeds of pressure meters and it adapted to peoples bodies with hundreeds of pistons. That was smart. This is just thermostat water mattress.
I was actually starting to do some mental gymnastics to try to justify one day buying the mattress because sleep actually is a great investment, but a subscription service to use all the features, REALLY? Looks like companies are making it so you can’t truly own a product without continuously paying for it. The only upside is that I don’t care too much about all the fancy tracking stuff, controlling the temperature myself is fine since I just want to be comfortable when I sleep.
