Why I stop sleeping on beds and went to the floor instead

I used to love sleeping on soft beds where I would feel like I’m on a cloud, the fluffier the better. About 10 years ago as I shared in the video, I came to the realization that something was wrong with my body. I wasn’t able to sit, or lay on the ground without pain. From that day on, I decided to get rid of my bed and start sleeping on the ground. My first step to that was sleeping on a whole bunch of blankets because I kept tossing and turning all night when I just try sleeping on the carpet.
The more my body got accustomed to being in contact with hard surfaces, the stronger it got. The reason, because when we press against hard surfaces, it pushes into our physical body, allowing our body to release, blockages, tension, and trapped energies just like if you were to go to a massage therapist, who’s doing the same thing with your body or using a foam roller or any other equipment or device that presses into your body. It’s exactly the same concept. The advantage of sleeping on hard surfaces is that you get to give your body longer duration of massage and you don’t depend on anybody else. The biggest advice I can give to this is take time to transition from soft to firm. If you don’t, you’re gonna find it too uncomfortable to maintain and you’ll go back into sleeping on something soft. My best recommendation is buying mattress toppers that are about 3 inches. This can be latex or memory foam. My personal preference is having it to be 2 inches max or 1 inch. However, keep in mind that I’ve been doing this for over 10 years and my body has adapted over time.
This is not a quick fix type of solution. These things that I share like walking, barefoot or sleeping on hard surfaces is a lifestyle, a way of living. When people ask me, how do I become as healthy or as energetics as you or they look and wonder why I have so much energy all the time it’s not just one thing. It’s a combination of this lifestyle that I’ve created for my life.

No... if you compare a person and a bed, the bed is soft, therefore you are harder than the bed... if you compare a person to the floor, the floor is hard, therefore the person is soft... flexibility comes in when you sleep on a hard floor because you have to remove all tension within the body in order to get comfortable enough to sleep. Removal of that tension makes you more fluid and flexible. Try it yourself and find out. @@him-wg5pu

Please folks remember your body conducts moisture and oil into whatever you sleep on. Also “on the floor” should mean you have a mat, like tatami, that helps prevent mold and mildew from accumulating under your sleeping space. Regularly wash and dry well whatever you sleep on. Health is both internal and external.
@JustVibingFullStop
@JustVibingFullStop 6 месяцев назад
Yes, great advice. Also, sleeping on a wooden floor, without a tatami, your heat and moisture can create discolouration on the floor. It's a good idea to roll up your bed each morning, or as often as you can, to let the floor breath. And, if you're using a traditional japanese mattress made out of pure cotton, you should also hang the mattress over your balcony railing(if you have a balcony) to ventilate as often as you can.

Great tips. How should a regular mattress, boxspring or even pillows be cleaned?
@JustVibingFullStop
@JustVibingFullStop 6 месяцев назад
@@jackkovar7806 If youre using a boxspring mattress it isn't really "floor sleeping" is it? The whole point of floor sleeping is that your skeleton has a little bit of contact with the hard surface/the floor so that your muscles can relax. I don't know how to "clean" a boxspring mattress. I usualy just vacuum clean my mattress and air it outside when the weather is good. For smell you can sprinkle bakingpowder on the mattress, lett it sit and then vacuum it off. I use a buckwheat filled pillow. Buckwheat can be washed in the washing machine but obviously you need to keep them in double washing-bags with zippers. Otherwise you might destroy your washing machine.

I also sleep on the ground, I keep a bed for the ladies dx . I also started squatting when I'm exercising or eating. . Sometimes when I'm out of breath I just squat down because you won't always have a chair/ledge/seat to lay on. . It's very helpful and I just wanted to share this so others can find it. . I like skateboarding and another bit of info. . Rest is important, but stretches and consistent movement is equally as important. . Try to stay warm /warm up /get sunlight. . If something feels stiff or sore. . More movement is required. . Your body produces what I call "sore fluid" . It's what makes your body feel "sore" . There's 2 ways to fix that. 1 is a little bit of alcohol like a beer or 2. Wine is better cause of the antioxidants. . 2 is obviously water and nutrition. But a temporary fix is building up your heart rate. . That is to say. If u feel sore. Stick to your routine from the previous day but make sure you incorporate a type of cardio. Once you're "warmed up" the soreness goes away for an hour or two, since you're heart is reoxygenating your blood and removing the soreness fluid from your muscles. . I did a very intense leg day/week. I couldn't walk normally for a week but during my work outs after a bit it would go away so don't take being sore as an excuse to rest. Just try and meet your energy somewhere close to the previous day. . I'll also elaborate on the wine/beer thing. . The soreness fluid your muscles produce needs to get filtered out through your blood. The alcohol carries it away but wine is better cause of the antioxidants but it also doesn't dehydrate you the way beer does. . Obviously don't get super drunk but a good buzz helps cause just a cup won't be enough but it also forces your body to fight against the alcohol making you slightly slimmer cause it uses the hydration in your body and the organs to remove the "poison" . The alcohol also helps with digestion since it kills bacteria. . But like I said don't over do the drinking. Best before bed. . I follow a Friday Saturday drinking schedule. Sometimes Sunday. . The reason. It's so my body can handle drinking and partying in case I need too do it socially. Sunday-thursday I stay sober so I can build up strength/muscle. . Fasting once a week is also good for u. Intermittent fasting is helpful. . Just from my perspective I avoid breakfast. So I fast from the moment I sleep until noon.then I have my lunch, I then snack until my final feel sometimes I have a 2nd lunch and a dinner but generally I try to follow 2 meal plan with snacks. . Most importantly vitamins are important and so is a source of fat. Milk or something else that works for u cause it keeps your skin and hair fresh so u don't end up looking sucked out/malnourished. . It doesn't matter what u eat vitamins help fight of cravings/over eating
@dandywaysofliving
@dandywaysofliving 6 месяцев назад
I forgot to mention. The reason I bring up drinking is cause I followed a sober lifestyle for a bit and was exercising regularly but I was starting to gain weight. . When I started to drink a bit to catch a buzz after following the sober route for awhile, I could feel a shift from my insides . It's like I turned the ignition key to my insides. . My body essentially wasn't "constantly fighting" when I was sober but when I drank, my body had an enemy to battle against in a way burning more calories and using the full force of my organs to process the poison. . Like I said don't over do it cause too much drinking, removes hydration and stops muscle growth. You just wanna push the fluid out and wine is the best option. Usually the bitter stuff cause the sugar dehydrates you more in the sweet stuff and doesn't help in muscle growth . That's just my opinion so do what's best for u. . I skateboard long distance daily and do daily stretches. It's what I found that helps. . But most importantly is getting enough water. For me I need a mix of wine and water*separately . I avoid soda or juice until sundown unless I crave it or feel I need it. Usually I go for juice but a soda sometimes hits the spot. . I have rules set for my self. Like always jog/run across intersections/ streets. Something I also need to say is a flash variant quote of Spiderman's mantra. . "With great speed, comes greater patience"

Good job! Welcome to my world! I'm a rehab specialist and a professional martial artist, my wife is a professional dancer. We have been sleeping like that for over 25 years. The more flexible you are, the more the body can absorb. The more comfortable hard surfaces are. The tighter you are the more bruising stagnant blood and lack of range of motion you have. As well as many medical problems. Daily stretching is a must for any human. When I say stretching, I'm talking 15-30 minutes worth, like a dancer or martial artist, or a soccer player. We all started off tight. These are not special stretches. The more range of motion you have in your joints, the more power and stamina you have. Low energy? If your muscles are tight, it's like leaving a light on in your car, slowly draining its energy. Stretch to get the most out of any activity.

I slept on the floor by accident for 3 years. At the time I did not have a bed and could not be bothered to buy one. What happened was that I liked it so much I continued to sleep on the floor, on the sitting room carpet covered a sheet. Thinking back, it helped me to get rid of my hip stiffness. My back was also better than I ever felt. I am a nurse with heavy workload. At work, everyone complained of back pain except me. Some days my back was so sore at the end of the shift. I came home and slept on the floor. Didn't even remember my back pain in few days. No wonder I am always nostalgic sleeping on the floor.

I started going barefoot after a running injury led me to a chiropractor which inadvertently led to sleeping on the ground which then led to my cutting out more daily support like shoes. Those minimalist shoes worked for a couple months until pain returned and I went fully barefoot. That was nearly 2 years ago and now I’m just that guy everyone knows doesn’t wear shoes. I keep the floor sleeping out of the abridged story I often tell, but it’s really the whole reason and the catalyst for my transition. My life has changed so wildly in 2 years. It’s almost like I didn’t question anything in life before.

I’ve noticed this after being homeless, also throughout my life in my memory I find myself napping on my grandmas floor with a small blanket and I would roll back and forth naturally as I slept, the sensitivity doesn’t go away, it conditions you to the natural environment and you become tougher. I’ve been sleeping in a bed for 6 years not the same one, different couch’s I consider beds also. I have a mattress but I still love sleeping on the grass or ground when I can. Not nearly as often as a kid and of course homelessness I just found the good in things I could while I was there. The Ground was always there for me lol

Used to sleep on a plywood bed with some sheets over it. No sleep problems. Always felt energized when I woke up. When life got a little better, the bed became a mattress & frame, etc. Became insomniac, and back problems arose. Only felt ok when I get max 6 hours on it. I have one of the most comfortable beds ever. Dropped $3,600 just in the mattress alone. My girl asked me why i like to sleep randomly on the hard floor, nothing under me other than the carpet in the living room. I told her because for some reason i like it and i feel like i wake up with less pain. So, i never gave it much thought but seeing you feel the same way i do, i think you're onto something. What else i thought was interesting is i too an a bodybuilder and an ex mma fighter. So considered myself a very tough guy as well. I just don't like waking up with pain when sleeping on a mattress all the time. If you think about it from a nature perspective, we are not naturally supposed to have mattresses to sleep on. We should be sleeping on the ground, or a pile of leaves and brush. Making contact with the earth. Which also brings up the thought process behind the videos saying you should walk on the ground barefoot sometimes because of all the healing and other crazy things that supposedly goes on in your body when making contact with the earth the way we were designed to do. Interesting topic to look into if you never have.

I try to stay optimistic, I'd say to myself, yeah you have no where to live, no friends or family but at least you have a job that brings in a little money, Some where to keep up on hygiene, a warm soft space to sleep at night and hope of using what little I have to get into a better position one day. Most of the things we have aren't necessary for our survival in the modern world but most of us don't want to just survive we want to thrive and thriving is what living is all about. When she got old and the vet said I could have another week or another year with her, I started sleeping on the floor with her. Spent a year and a half sleeping on the floor with her and when she finally couldn't keep going I moved back to my bed, only it didn't feel right for some reason. Way too soft and cushy. Now I sleep on the floor just naturally. I just get a foam roller under my knees to prevent them from locking throughout the night and a pillow for my head. And a thin little quilt my grandma knitted, of course. Gotta keep the grandparents happy.

After doing a lot of research, I've decided to just sleep in a sleeping bag instead of dealing with a floor mattress or futon and tatami mats and all of that kind of stuff that seems to come with very frequent cleaning schedules and cleaning difficulties. Anyway, the only thing I wonder about ahead of time is "Do I need to get two sleeping bags, a regular one for winter time and then try to find a thin or wimpy one for the hotter months?" because it seems a sleeping bag will be too hot in the summer for sleeping. I sleep on the floor on tatami, which is basically a Japanese rice hay pressed into a thin block. It is as hard as my wooden floor but provides a little warmth from the cold floor. I have done it for 4 years and I too will never go to a traditional bed again. The one thing I really appreciate about this is that when I have to stand up, I have to squat with both of my feet firmly on the floor and pull my whole weight up. It is like doing yoga as soon as I wake up. I also use it as my couch as it is far more comfortable and good for the body as a sofa. I see my posture is totally different sitting on the floor rather than on a sofa. I recommend it.

I m trying this... m 69 yrs. I will let you know, how I feel tomorrow morning. When I was a youngster I always slept on the floor, guess all the energy that I got, cause of sleeping on the floor wth. just a blanket. I only have HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. I got sick wth. a taste of the Corona Virus, (I was ill cause of that near death vehicle accident I had) then again when I went to a Mexican Concert, of which I had one shot, I asked the people there if they got their shots, their response was (we don't believe on shots), hahaha. Now I have gotten all my necessary shots, I never get sick. GOD takes care of me. May GOD BLESS me in my new endeavor in the NAME of JESUS.

Why sleep on the floor because it is not necessary as there is a much better way. I am a carpenter, buy a 4’ x 8’ sheet of good one side, (3/4”) three-quarter inch (not OSB but rather real) “marine” plywood and make a hard bed out of it at >>about 18” inches off of the floor

I started sleeping on a Japanese floor mat and sometimes paired with a Japanese Futon Mattress a few years back on and off and now I am moving to me more full time. And I can tell. you this, it has done wonders for my neck and lower back. Now when I sleep in a normal bed, I wake up in pain. It's the floor for me too! Great video.

Hey Mike, a few weeks or months ago, I watched your video and was intrigued. I researched sleeping on very thin futons and all that, and that was it. But recently, I took on sitting on the floor and sleeping on my yoga mat and am now in the process of selling my desk, bed and mattress and settling on the floor. I feel great, strong, grounded, free and happy. I had back, neck, hip pain, all gone on a matter of days. It all began with your video. Thanks bud ❤

I see allot of comme nts saying they have been doing it for years before seeing this vid. Being a 30 years old with back pain and thinking about going down that avenue of sleeping on the floor. Nobody has spoken about pillows? Is floor sleeping pillow-less? Do you do the sleeping block like the tribes in Africa? Do you roll up your clothes? Do you sleep on your back or side?

I remember one day at 36yrs old I just noticed I was so stiff, so stiff in fact I couldn't sit cross legged on the floor without pain and although I was running a lot (long distance) I found little nagging injuries started happening and quickly came to the realization I need flexibility. This was 8yrs ago. Today I make sure that I spend time on the floor each day, read on the floor and eat on the floor sometimes. Just doing this one thing will literally make you so flexible over time. Also.. one of my go-to remedies for stress is to just get myself to the floor... there is just something so calming and rejuvenating like spending time on the ground. I mean after all, we weren't designed for couches and beds. We were designed to be near the earth and on hard firm surfaces.

Sleeping on the floor was always the elders remedy to a great back. I practice Functional Patterns (biomechanics practitioner) and since then, I prefer to sleep on the floor. I have the best sleep however using pillows between the knees helps maintain proper alignment if you sleep on the side regardless of the floor or bed. If you sleep on the back, something should be under the knees to keep that pelvis from rocking forward causing lower back and tailbone pain.

When I was a student i moved to the netherlands during a housing crisis. I spent a lot of time sleeping in people's living rooms on a thin self-inflating sleeping matress from decathlon that I got used to it and never invested in a bed. When I returned home after 3 years I slept on my bed and when i woke up i was sore. Ever since then, I continue to sleep on this self-inflating mattress, which from all the use is not self-inflating anymore :)

When your body sleeps on a bed or any soft, springy surface, your muscle hasn't fully let go. Which leaves your muscle tissue tense. You don't feel it, but your muscle clinch, while lying on a bed. But whenever you're lying on the floor, gravity takes it's course and your entire body lets itself go. Your body just drops. Thus, giving the body deep relaxation, which is the point of why humans sleep... I have been floor sleeping for about 5 to 7 years and it always decompresses my spine and relaxes my skeletal system. It's like a reset after the physical training I do, every night I sleep. It feels really good.

Haven't transitioned to floor sleeping yet, but whenever I just chill with my phone in my room, something people usually do on their beds, I do it on the floor. Another added benefit of this is that as the floor isn't elevated, you naturally and almost unknowingly train your body more whenever you stand up. Not to mention you always have room to place your coffee cup.

I've noticed this recently when doing the corpse pose at the end of a yoga asana practice, just laying on the floor every muscle is able to fall into a deeeeeep, deep relaxation. To my mind it's like grounding... every little movement, from shifting your body, to breathing, to even the beating of your heart, creates a wave-like energy that has to go somewhere. In a bed where you're just floating on springs or foam that energy subtly "echoes" around, and the body makes tiny micro-adjustments to compensate. On the ground that energy just goes into the stability of the earth... sorry for rambling but yeah this makes total sense to me now, thanks!

I started sleeping on a yoga mat on the floor after my friend died, in line with ‘staying close to the ground’ in shiva (Judaism). I’m not Jewish but it helped me to mourn fully. Anyway I would end up in this fetal position as I slept without a pillow. Adding the pillow made all the difference. Moved house and started sleeping in a bed again and a terrible back pain started. This video has inspired me to go back to what worked… I think this time I’d sleep on a very thin mat on top of my wood pallets, with a pillow. Also wanna get back to camping during the summer, falling asleep to the stars, and waking up to the sun. Thanks for the video man

Been sleeping on the floor for about 2 years using a yoga mat with no pillow. It helped my body issues to the point where sleeping on the floor is the only way I can sleep now. When people come over and ask where is your bed, the look on their face is priceless. They really think I'm weird lol. Maybe it's not for everyone but in my personal experience, I believe it's better to condition my body to a firm surface rather than an overly cushioned mattress.

side sleeper here. Got rid of my bed always had lower back pain. Year 2 into sleeping on the floor rug my pain is way lower and you do get way better energy because your body "grounds" onto the surface. Grounding is like some self healing meditation like therapy for free... It was uncomfortable the first year but you do get used to it.
