The WORST BROADCAST DECISION in NBC Super Bowl HISTORY | Super Bowl XXIII

At the pregame show to Super Bowl XXIII between the San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals, instead of devoting the bulk of the time to the game, or to any of the critical off-the-field issues surrounding the game, for some inexplicable reason, NBC Sports decided to air a talent show featuring NFL players, and hosted by Ahmad Rashad and John Candy. The idea is as bad as it sounds, and unsurprisingly, it failed hard. This is the story behind the horrible idea, as well as Reggie White's attempt during the show at standup comedy.

I think it depends on what era you grew up in. When this aired, at the end of the 80s, TV shows where celebrities and athletes did talent competitions, stunts and circus acts was still pretty big on television - people liked to see their favourite stars and athletes "out of their element" and/or showing off skills they aren't normally associated with. And for the big news stories: at the time the news rarely covered things like celebrity scandal, where somebody was caught with drugs or hiring a prostitute - that stuff was mostly left for magazines like "The National Enquirer" or for tabloid television shows like "A Current Affair" and a news story like the Miami riots would still be considered "regional" and would barely get any coverage on the national stage. And the other big factor in all this was: the need to appeal to a wider audience. If its Superbowl Sunday and I want to watch the pregame show and the game itself and my wife isn't interested she can just go watch one of a hundred channels on the TV in the bedroom, stream something from the internet or just watch some RU-vid - back in the late 80s most households still only had one TV and only half of America had cable television. So for most households it wasn't a case of the guys in the basement watching the Superbowl and the wives upstairs watching something else, back then if your TV was on it was something everybody would have to watch.

It would have been better if you had some big names up there. But I think it's safe to say most NFL players talent is playing football, and they don't have much else going for them. Yeah things like Star Search were popular (though I hated that show, but maybe because I was a kid and stuff like that bored me), but some of those performers were actually good. And there were some hold over variety shows (though the 70's were they heyday for those type of shows). It would have been better if they had gotten celebrities and not NFL players. Look how popular Dancing With the Stars was (maybe it still is, I'm not interested in stuff like that).

It seems like the greatest indictment of this idea is it never should have been done in the first place. However, Diet Pepsi sponsored the show, and I’m sure they’d have to be persuaded to drop the show based on the “real life” events that transpired as late as the day before the game. This is the problem NBC had with the original Heidi Game, was that a corporate sponsor would be upset if they didn’t air it on time for a football game conclusion. NBC and Diet Pepsi couldn’t have known that the riots and the Stanley Wilson incident would occur that week. Reggie White’s heart was in the right place when it came to impersonations. His voice, not so much. He sounded the same on every impersonation. Reminds me of the Don Imus Show. Imus had someone do impersonations of newsmakers. They all sounded the same.

Not the first person to make this comment, but this answers why John Candy was there for Joe Montana to point out before the game winning drive. I'll cut NBC a little slack in a few places. 1. When this was being planned out, they certainly didn't know about the riots or the Stanley Wilson situation. The riots were ongoing enough that they probably could have called an audible but the Stanley Wilson situation broke that day. The earliest anyone at NBC could have possibly known was late the night before. 2. While you're right, there were plenty of storylines to draw from, it's also worth remembering that the prior 5 Super Bowls were all blowouts and all but one of those was essentially over at halftime. And even though it didn't turn out this way, this one was expected to be the same way, with the 49ers favored by 7. I could definitely understand an NBC executive thinking "Why are we going to bog the pregame show down with a bunch of football analysis when everyone knows this game will be a blowout and won't watch?" And as you pointed out, CBS went football heavy the next year and got a biblical blowout. Obviously it didn't work. If they wanted to do a talent show, they should have brought in actual comedians, singers, etc. But I can kind of understand the thinking.
@americangiant1003
@americangiant1003 2 года назад
Or Micheal maybe NBC could have tried this "Talent Show" the night before on Saturday Night with a mix of selected (actual good NFL "Performers" lol) and some of America's top comics of that time as well. It had no place in the actual pregame.

If this were earlier in the 80s when NBC was ratings-challenged and desperate, I could have understood this idea, weird as it was. Consider it might have been worse. NBC was by the late 80s owned by General Electric. If GE really wanted to, they could have had Bob Costas host and narrate documentaries as to how light bulbs, washing machines and locomotive engines were made as the build-up to the game. If they really wanted laughs, GE executives could have pointed a gun at David Letterman and ordered him to do that same assignment.

John Candy isn't there, Joe Montana can't point him out to calm his team down, that epic drive doesn't happen, the Bengals win the game, Boomer Esiason makes it to the HOF, Montana isn't considered the (pre-Brady) GOAT, and in fact, may lose his job to Young that much sooner.

I bet they didn't want to cover the riots or that running back story cause the producers wanted to keep all of the viewers in a happy mood. They didn't think that people would be interested in that.

Spencer Tillman has had actual a good post playing career as a Sports Anchor/NFL Color Analyst. I remember him in the late 90's when he was the Weekend Sports Anchor at WABC-TV the Local NYC ABC News Station. And way better than trying his dream at a horrible failed attempt at a cross between "American Idol," the "Gong Show" and "Showtime at the Apollo" lol.

Are we talking about the Super Bowl pregame that now involves nothing but talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, more talk, and the pregame festivities. Somewhere in there, is a typical pregame show which would usually be in a studio.
@MrSchimpf

One other thing; NBC had just switched its affiliation in Miami 22 days earlier from WSVN to WTVJ, which it had just purchased. Even that could have been part of the pregame show as trying to put behind that affiliation switch (which affected several stations up to West Palm Beach).

If NBC decides sensibly not to do this, is NFL history altered? Does Montana rally/calm his team without having John Candy to point to in the crowd? The world may never know. As a devoted NFL fan who actually remembers this Super Bowl...I've heard of 2 players involved here, and I only know Spencer Tillman because he's been a broadcaster for what seems like 75 years. Lots of stuff here that I didn't know, like the riots in Miami. But what shocked me the most was the "LIVE" graphic. I don't know if this show could be saved--probably not...but my God, couldn't you PRE-TAPE IT and try to fix what you can in post? Maybe you can do 12-14 acts and whittle it down to 6 or 7 for the live broadcast. Hell, maybe even have Reggie do his routine twice to see if it's remotely better once he's gotten through it and any presumed nerves are gone. It's flabbergasting that they would do this at all, but to do it live is just asking for disaster.

I make it a point every year not to turn on the Super Bowl until about 15 minutes before kickoff. All I want to see is the coin toss and the national anthem. A four hour pregame show before one football game even if it’s the Super Bowl is ridiculous. One hour should be sufficient. Football fans are already familiar with the two teams are going to be playing each other, and casual and non-football fans can find out what they want or need to know in one hour. And what’s worse at least here in Arizona is that the local radio station that broadcasts the Cardinals games feel a need to do a 4 1/2 hour pregame show before every single regular season game. This is completely ridiculous.

@shackdaddy7106
@shackdaddy7106 2 года назад
@@TimmyTickle The Super Bowl is when the radio station started doing a 4 1/2 hour pregame show. Unfortunately they have not let go of the idea. I forgot to mention that the post game show runs for about three hours. However I don’t have as much of a problem with that is because they are talking about the game that just took place and there’s interviews with the players and the coaches. Plus they take calls from listeners. They could probably shorten it to an hour and a half or two hours.

I don't remember the train wreck of a pregame show, but this was a great job of laying out how awful the idea was and how tone-deaf it was to 1) not move the game because of the riots leading up to THE DAY BEFORE THE GAME and 2) pivot to a discussion about race relations in Miami and nationwide AND a discussion about cocaine, its effects on the player, its effect on the game, and its effects on society as a whole. Plus, the "talent" show wasn't very talented. And from a football angle, the fact Bill Walsh was about to retire is a GREAT thing to talk about. Don't tell me NBC couldn't have pivoted to any of those things above. When you're in media, you learn to adapt to whatever breaking news you've got. And NBC had time to adapt since the riots had been happening for a while. I was just remembering the game itself, and how I felt Jim Breech should have been Super Bowl MVP if not for Joe Montana. I even remembered my assistant principal agreeing with me. He might even have said Breech should have won it anyway!
