At the conclusion of Super Bowl XXII between the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins, ABC was originally set to air a completely different Super Bowl lead-out program, and was ready to air the pilot episode to China Beach. However, at the last minute, ABC called an audible, and decided to air something completely different with The Wonder Years. And this decision paid off in a big way. This is the story behind the gamble that ABC took at Super Bowl 22, which might have turned out to be the greatest broadcasting decision in the history of the Super Bowl

The Wonder Years pilot re-aired on March 15th, 1988, after ridiculously heavy promotion during the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. That said, the decision by ABC to not air a two-hour China Beach pilot after the Super Bowl was likely a very smart one. In 1999, the fourth episode of the Sopranos was held up by HBO until the end of the Super Bowl.

The good thing is for both shows, it all worked out; The Wonder Years had a long run, syndication, and an acclaimed DVD release, and now has a reboot series dealing with a new era and focus, while China Beach did do well as a four-season cult classic that avoided the curse of a lengthy Super Bowl and long pilot better aired as an event night on its own cutting it short in its prime, and its own acclaimed DVD set. The real winner though; the local news departments, which instead of having to keep their anchors stuck waiting until after midnight or 12:30am to start (and having wasted a long lead-in), were out the door by their usual Sunday night time because a half-hour show certainly kept most of the lead-in, especially going into the Calgary Olympics and that promotional steamroller (which would end up being ABC's last run at the Games).

The Super Bowl thing didn't work for Family Guy. The show barely made it through 2.5 seasons before being cancelled. After successful DVD releases, the show was brought back.

@kyleolson8977
@kyleolson8977 2 года назад
@@matthewdaley746 TV Networks won't really keep a series on because of awards or press, despite what people think, nor do they cancel shows because the story has reached a logical end point. It's all about cash, and acclaim translates poorly into cash unless there are ratings. There are other examples of critical darlings that don't do as well. Murder One, for example, had better ratings in the first season than Homicide did in its first season (relative to all of TV). What saved Homicide despite being marginal for so long ratings-wise was likely that it wasn't dropping but got a little stronger. Murder One fell off after season one so it's natural it got the axe. What amazes me isn't that Homicide was renewed for a while after it was stable. What amazes me is that it survived that first season. As for the end of the show, even with completely stable ratings a show is likely to be cancelled eventually. The cost of the cast, crew, and producers start increasing and you can only drop so many of them. Eventually the show becomes too expensive. This is the main reason why you see major actors leave shows without warning between seasons. Some shows like Law and Order can cycle out nearly the entire cast and last 20 years, and Homicide did that some.

Agreed Manu. Even though this was a butt kicking by the team formerly known as the “ Washington Redskins” over the Elway led Broncos, this 1988 Big game was historic in 3 other ways as well. Not only this SB was a land mark and ground breaking event with the show by Doug Williams performance. Matter of fact, Williams then record breaking “game of his life” was huge in helping to end the semi racial barrier of Black Quarterbacks winning a championship. Plus the 2nd historical memory from this big game with not only the debut of the classic show “The Wonder Years.” It was also the debut of former lead Olympic Hockey & MLB Commentator Al Michaels first time calling the Super Bowl as well.

It seems like competitor networks have a prime opportunity to air programming that people uninterested in the superbowl would find appealing. Especially during the halftime show and the postgame ceremony. There’re other target demographics who aren’t interested in the game plus if the game itself is terrible or boring or becomes one-sided, superbowl viewers might wanna check out what else is on. Plus in recent years the halftime show has become rather risqué in many people’s minds, so they might want to flip over to something more wholesome for a half hour. The postgame award ceremony is such a bore for anyone who isn’t a fan of the winner that I’d contend that the time slot immediately after the game on other networks is more valuable than the superbowl network’s time slot after the trophy broadcast; most have already tuned out.
@JoelGarcia

What if ABC held Cop Rock until the Super Bowl instead of rolling it out in September 1990? Sad thing was it didn't even *make* it to SB 25. Its last episode aired on December 26 Huge misfire for Steven Bochco before getting back to business with NYPD Blue. First a personal recollection from that night. I was trying to watch the Super Bowl that night but became ill at half time (I think it may have been food poisoning) so I missed the the second half (I left the TV on so I could listen to it). I didn't miss much action since there was only one touchdown scored in the second half. I had to see the Wonder Years pilot when it reaired. There have been several instances since that the lead out of the Super Bowl started late. One such was Alias was scheduled by ABC after the 2001 Super Bowl. It didn't start until just after 11:00 p.m Eastern. It was one of the lowest rated lead outs in quite some time. There was a year on FOX that American Dad premiered after 11:15 p.m. The reboot of 24 on FOX also started around 11:00. The lead outs just don't seem to get the attention of the viewing audience anymore. Although a show like This Is Us did OK, the last blockbuster post Super Bowl was Undercover Boss on CBS.

(Please note: I paused this at the 2:55 mark...) I remember Super Bowl XIX quite well... here in Buffalo and environs, we had a real bad blizzard that day, and the snowfall/subsequent snowdrifts made travel nearly impossible for a good part of the upcoming work week. Not only that, but schools were closed for that week because of the conditions described. As an aside: the next day, January 21 of 1985, was my state(New York)'s first observance of MLK Day; it wouldn't be a federal thing until 1986. Plus, IIRC, that upcoming weekend would've been my junior-high chorus' performance of *THE WIZARD OF OZ.* It turned out we'd have to wait a few more weeks to get that in. Finally, Super Bowl night's outro show was the short-lived *MacGRUDER AND LOUD* crime series; it turns out the police captain was played by the same fella who played the Cowardly Lion in *THE WIZ.* However, this series didn't last too long. But: the next ABC foray with the Super Bowl was Super Bowl XXII; the series that started after that game, *THE WONDER YEARS,* would prove to be a mega-hit.

The subsequent two ABC Super Bowl lead-out shows (those being _Davis Rules_ after Super Bowl XXV and _Extreme_ after Super Bowl XXIX) fared poorly when compared to _The Wonder Years._ _Davis Rules_ was dropped by ABC before its first season wrapped-- and despite a channel hop to CBS [after ABC went back on its earlier word to use _Davis Rules_ as a midseason replacement in 1992] and a retool by CBS, the show ended after 29 episodes. _Extreme_ only lasted *seven* episodes, despite having James Brolin in the lead role. Ever since 1996, when NBC aired an hour-long and star-studded _Friends_ episode, the consensus has been to have an established series air after the game-- with little exception.

Only Exception was for Fox with Family Guy and that went well until one episode And Then There Were Fewer, after that the show dropped off with only a few exceptions of the mainly if not all Brian and Stewie time, travel, or other science episodes and one locked in the vault, or the origin of the Joke episode. After the writers stopped the mainly Brian and Stewie episodes the show became mostly a joke, even inside the show sometimes making fun of how bad and dumb the show has become, and how poor the writing is so I tuned it out.

I only ever saw one episode of TWY but it's hard to imagine that they ever did better -- I know that's a weird combination, but there it is. Fred Savage and his dad were traveling at night for some reason, and one bad thing happened after another, raising the tension between the two of them to the breaking point. At the show's climax, the car has a flat tire and Fred Savage decides that *he* is strong enough to break the lug-nut, after his prime-aged father has tried and failed. They have an extremely heated exchange and ... and then Fred breaks the lug-nut. Absolutely fantastic stuff: I remember sitting there for a long moment with my mouth open and my hand on top of my head. TV writing is not generally that good even with the classier properties out there.

I noticed the narrator was different for the pilot. It didn't sound right. So glad ABC figured this out quickly and made the change. Otherwise the show wouldn't have been nearly as good. That show, perhaps more than any other, was made by the narrator, which was Daniel Stern. He began on the second episode and subsequent re runs of the pilot featured his voice as well. The opening credits were nearly as important with Joe Cocker's rendition of "With a little help from my friends". Such a fantastic show that really made you feel the emotions of the ensemble cast.

Chicken Parma: This (2022) will be the first time since 1976 that another sports event has directly followed the Super Bowl. In 1976, the final round of the Phoenix Open golf tournament was broadcast immediately following Super Bowl X on CBS, and set a record for the most number of viewers to have ever watched golf on television (although the final round of the 1997 Masters, Tiger Woods' first career win in that event, would shatter the 1976 Phoenix Open ratings record). There may have been one or two other times (maybe other Phoenix Opens?) that a sports event immediately followed the Super Bowl. But in all those prior examples, the Super Bowl began around 2:05 P.M. I think what helped the ratings was the show was about Baby Boomers in their teens in 1968 and that generation was about to hit 40 in 1988. The Wonder Years was an excellent show to follow the superbowl. At that time it was Baby Boomer Parents and Gen X at home as their children. The show had nostalgia from the 1960'snd 70s' . in a way never seen before, like the Greatest Generation wasn't there to censor the baby boomers so it felt a bit more authentic than previous shows that took place in that time. There wasn't a real political message because it was from a kids POV who hated that in every direction. Baby Boomers got their nostalgia. and Puberty reaching (me) Gen X's. got characters dominating a show we could related to because they were our age. It was rare to find a show made in the 80's that was about 60's. without crappy politics but ABC did it with the wonder years with no politics

It made a whole lot of sense to air the program ABC did air instead of what they originally planned to air, even in Washington where those interested in military-oriented shows vis-a-vis Airwolf would have STILL preferred to see Washington highlights and celebrations instead of a TV show, and even if Frank Herzog was still covering for WJLA after calling the Super Bowl for Washington, they still would have changed the channel to see what George Michael (WRC) and Glenn Brenner (WUSA) had to say; not that Herzog was bad, but WJLA at the time was a third-place station in essentially a two-station market dominated on the news end by Jim Vance (WRC) and Gordon Peterson (WUSA). ABC is lucky the Super Bowl didn't drag on all night since Washington ran away with the medicine ball, and The Wonder Years became iconic and definitive of the network in the turn from the 80s to the 90s.
@stantheman8609
@stantheman8609 Год назад
P.S. It would be a real ratings medicine ball had the Broncos won since KUSA (aka 9News) dominated Denver in the 80s, except Denver didn't win.
