the WORST Colleen Hoover book yet 

coho would actually be so good at horror and psychological thrillers-- like actual ones, she just needs to stop romanctizing her novels and passing them off as romance and fluff...

I actually can not believe she used schizophrenia as an excuse for her character to sexually abuse and kill women. I’m actually appalled. I have multiple people in my family that suffer from it and NEVER would they think to do something that horrendous. She’s honestly lost all of the little respect I had left for her.

coho really needs to stop with this “asperger’s” shit in her books. she just uses autistic ppl as plot devices (also had very ableist narratives in “verity”) and it pisses me off!

CoHo’s books have time and time again proven to me that they suck. It took me reading 30 minutes of reading It Starts With Us to notice. Her books suck,and the precedent it sets is genuinely harmful. It is HARMFUL. The stereotyping of mental illness,the way abuse is just glamorised and normalised,the lack of actual substance beyond trauma porn. An author should always be aware of the audience they’re targeting,and this isn’t a book that should be written for anyone by anyone.

i am deeply disturbed. deeply. disturbed. had coho set out to do a justified portrayal of abuse (which she tried in "it ends with us", and failed, in my opinion) then sure, explore it and make something out of it, not this bullshit, what is the point of having detailed descriptions from the abuser?? we don't need that??

I had a gut feeling not to touch any of Colleen Hoover’s book, and you have given me another good reason not to, Raya. I would have never believed that this was written by a social worker if I had not been told, and all I could think was ‘where are social services for the brother” and “where are the parents?!”. My mum is a published romance author, but before she began writing, she was a medical professional and has even put her knowledge and experiences into her books. I’m not being biased when I say that when you read the medical segments, you can tell it was written by someone who knows what they’re talking about. My main concern is what was Colleen Hoover’s excuse for romanticising toxic behaviour and making light of serious issues that affect people in the real world? For a character’s backstory I can understand, but this??? That’s the end of my rant 😅 this was a great video and even though I will never look at the book (as you advised), how you summarised everything was very interesting and informative. Colleen Hoover is now blacklisted in my TBRs and reading wish lists along with E.L. James. 😂

You know I read this article in which it said that "if you respect someone for what they have gone through or what they have experienced you are going to trust everything they tell you even if it's not true" and I think that because most of Colleen Hoover's fandom is literally teenagers who respect her writing so much to a point that what ever she releases is a 5 star in their opinion, even though they haven't even read book. Colleen Hoover is just an excuse for a writer, she has no knowledge about what she's even saying the amount of time it takes to just gather information about a book that you are about to write

The fact that Colleen Hoover is a published author is so concerning to me.

This is violent porn, not romance. It isn’t even good writing. Good writers don’t have to use filth and violence in every paragraph, nor use it to cover up bad writing and shallow cliched plots. Good writers don’t over use certain words because they are considered dirty words. It is so juvenile and the anatomical descriptions are banal. I am now questioning whether CH actually wrote them. This looks like the kind of book - to quote the Simpsons, “churned out by a room full of pill popping Lit majors desperate for work”. It also reminds me of the kind of thing AI might churn out. Maybe publishers worried by the rapid rise of independent publishing have discovered TikTok? In that interview clip CH reminded me of the T R Francis character in that same Simpson’s episode The Book Job. In other words I felt she was kind of faking it. Who is reading this cr@p? It would not survive in darker genres. These books are just not good enough. Ask Stephen King if he thinks these books would make a good horror story. Have these books been dumped in the Romance category because they believe they can get away with lower standards? It’s time to say no.

Words can not describe my hate for this book.

Do you just dislike this book because it's about domestic violence, or do you dislike the book because the weather has a weak writing voice, or do you dislike it because the story is just plain out boring? Because I am writing a book about a woman who is being abused by her husband as well, only it's not a romance book like Colleen's book it's a mystery thriller story. When I begin to write any of my stories I make sure that the readers have to like the genre, the readers have to like the story,and the readers have to like the characters because just because the husband in my book beats his wife doesn't mean that the readers has to dislike him. Readers can love the bad guy. Take a look at Scarface Tony Montana was a killer, but everyone loved him. My nephew has Tony Montana on his back pack, so just because my character hit his wife doesn't mean everyone will dislike the book. Maybe you dislike Colleen's book because she didn't take the time to have her story taken by notes or because she has a weak voice. However if my readers don't like the genre, story, or characters then they will dislike book. I noticed that Tyler Perry has very bad movies and he end his shows and a very horrible way. Writers like that I think they don't care about their stories they just care more about making a buck if you ask me. I take the time to study and get to know my main character especially since she's white because as a black woman I didn't know anything about a rich white woman I didn't even know how they act because all I was around was black people. I never was around rich white people and that's why it was so difficult to write her and the other characters because they are all white people. As a black woman I ha trouble writing those types of people.

I actually thought this was one of Colleen’s better books. Was it unhinged and dark af? Yes! But I enjoyed the story.
