The Worst Country You Have Never Heard Of

This is a country with no industry, no exports, no tourism, minimal economic development, and constant political turmoil. It can be regarded as a "Nothing Economy", as it has so little output to boast of.
This: is Comoros. A tiny archipelago sitting near Madagascar in the Indian Ocean.

Seems like Mayotte was the winner here, ironically.
@howtoappearincompletely9739
@howtoappearincompletely9739 Месяц назад
And by miles. Its Wikipedia article states "Mayotte is the most prosperous territory in the Mozambique Channel, making it a major destination for immigration.", in 2019 "as a result of immigration from neighboring islands [i.e., Comoros], 48% of the population were foreign nationals", and "In recent national elections, Mayotte has been a stronghold for the right-wing populist National Rally party, and gave its presidential candidate Marine Le Pen her highest vote percentage in the 2022 French presidential election first round." The causality is obvious. I have no idea why the UN General Assembly takes such issue with France retaining Mayotte; the Mahorais clearly want to remain part of France and the relationship is clearly beneficial for them.

@@bitthalsarangi5471 Tbf, most of the mainland countries have a lot of problems that aren’t as properly able to be linked to colonization as one might think. For example, if we use the border/non-liked tribes argument, you get issues with places like the DPRC, which is too diverse to even make a modern sovereign state of if that argument was heeded, or places like, say, South Africa, in which you have situations where for example the Zulu was already making empires in the area and committing things that are risky to say on RU-vid during “the crushing”. Hell, there’s some issue with the broad idea of colonization within much of the African continent in general because arguably, the Bantu people groups themselves are colonizers, most well known within South Africa (with the “Khoisan” people being the “natives” there, for example), but ironically it’s the case for most of subsaharan and in some cases sehalian Africa even before the Europeans colonized). There’s also interesting concepts such as the colonial powers being the ones to end the slave trade as we think of it (at least officially, as we all know that it still happens under the radar around the world, especially in post-colonial Africa), with the British working to stamp out the trans-Atlantic trade, and the various colonial powers working to stamp out the other types on the continent such as the Arab slave trade (much to the displeasure of many of the native polities on the continent of which slavery what built many of them and continued to be important parts of their economy), with the most notable semi-exception in the the Belgian congo when Leopold II ruled it, quite rightly leading to harsh international condemnation at the time (to the point where the Belgian government took it away from him), and villainized in the annals of history. Effectively, it’s not so much the colonization in and of itself that’s the problem, but for the most part that after the fact, the people of the various African countries didn’t want to go back to their old systems for various reasons, but also were unable (or in some cases, I’d imagine) to fully and properly embrace “new” systems that their former colonial ruler countries and the wider western world generally used to great effect at the time (with notable exceptions, obviously).

comoros was nowhere near singapore decades ago. Stop with this bs that Singapore was some poor nation with nothing but fishing villages and swamps. It was literally the most developed and richest city in south east asia even before ww2. It already had the largest dry docks (yes docks, multiple of the largest at the time was in singapore) meaning that it has quite an active ship maintainance industry. It was already the world's 7th largest port at the time. Literally every manufacturing and natural resource processing within british malaya borneo was sent to singapore. Heck singapore was the de jure british malaya borneo capital back then. The tiny island alone has almost half of the entire protectorate/colonies gdp and was also the most populated settlement. In comparison, the second most developed town in malaya borneo at the time (Taiping) has nowhere near the development and population singapore has

@@zebimicio5204 Yes Singapore was already one of the more developed cities in Southeast Asia, but still doesn’t change the fact it is a densely populated city-state with zero resources after independence from Malaysia. Also to be honest I just have to say the French were relatively terrible colonisers that failed to develop the industry and economy in any of their former colonies, whereas the British managed to do that with Hong Kong and Singapore. What Singapore has over Comoros is definitely geographic position though as it is situated at the mouth of the Straits of Malacca which is one of the world’s busiest trading ship routes.

@@YummYakitori Majority of Singapore's economy revolves around the service sector and it has been that way since the 13th century (parameswara's ancestors turned the island into world trading hub and was the religious and academic centre for buddhism). In fact natural resources meant nothing when they were THE place for natural resource processing and turned into final goods which is the actual value that consumers want. Again remember, the island itself already has half the gdp on the entire malaya borneo back then, it only dropped after the war which they still managed to retain at least have 1/3 of the rest of malaya borneo. What they did after 1965 is not much different than what the british colonial government did after they took the island from Johor. Do remember that one of the reasons Singapore actually left (yes, they left, the whole kicking out thing was a ruse by both Lee and Tunku so that the British wouldn't put a stop to it, read the albatross file to know more) was that Singaporean mps felt Singapore was the bread basket of Malaysia and they were essentially sucked dry to fund Borneo's development. And comoros have nothing compared to sg. SIngapore already had the skilled manpower, infrastructure, and economy to propell the island forward, comoros has none of that.

One of the reasons why singapore left the federation (yes left, the whole kicking out thing was a ruse by tunku and lee so that the british wouldn't intervene, you can read this in the declassified albatross file) was because of Singapore cabinet members thought of Singapore being sucked dry to fund Malaysian Borneo's development. @@Bastille9513 Yes, but nowhere near as union republics. I lived in Crimea and we had a full blown famine and starvation in 1990s while West Ukraine and Kiev lived fairly comfortably. Whereas Central Russia finally got all its money it previously invested in the periphery and lived even more 'luxuriously'. When we came to visit our relatives in early 200s they moved from a shabby railside wooden private house to an newly constructed (!) apartment block with all the amenities.

I have yet to see a comoran in real life though. Hell i even saw a Socotran woman once, maybe even a Malagasy, but never a Comoran

Vanilla is a valuable, very valuable, export amid worldwide shortages now. Cloves and certain other spices are also very valuable. With average age of merely 20, uneducated, unskilled, and untrained, they have NO useful labor force but a major drain on any economic benefits they can produce. They are simply breeding poverty - far more mouths to feed than they can possibly feed or otherwise provide for. Rapid population growth generates tremendous instability, both politically and economically, and they really are useless as "temporary guest workers" anywhere, plus in competition with a couple of billion uneducated, unskilled, untrained mouths seeking to live off hard-working taxpayers elsewhere. Foreign aid is actually counterproductive, as is exporting migrant labor. They need to figure out a better solution for themselves. Meanwhile, buy their vanilla, cloves, other spices of value - and that is ALL - until they sort themselves out.

I'd hard to feel bad for a "nation" that wanted to be free, became free, and then has not taken advantage of what it has to offer, re: tourism. Many island nations do very well thanks to tourism and utilizing their natural resources. Now, Comoros has become a welfare nation for the EU, they cannot claim to have pride if they are living on handouts. Why do we see similar situations throughout the world, whether it's countries in Africa, Haiti or Comoros? Maybe the government in Comoros should have schools teaching English, even if the people continue to speak French and Arabic. Speaking English will be a huge step in bringing in dollars and possibly tourism assistance. If a Western nation goes in there now, they will be called racists and be accused of taking advantage of an island nation, etc., etc.. This is what you get instead.

It certainly worked for Mayotte, which "is the most prosperous territory in the Mozambique Channel", according to the island-department's Wikipedia article. Unfortunately, this has "ma[de] it a major destination for immigration", so much so that in 2019, "as a result of immigration from neighboring islands [i.e., Comoros], 48% of the population were foreign nationals". Consequently, "[i]n recent national elections, Mayotte has been a stronghold for the right-wing populist National Rally party, and gave its presidential candidate Marine Le Pen her highest vote percentage in the 2022 French presidential election first round." I have no idea why the UN General Assembly takes such issue with France retaining Mayotte; the Mahorais clearly want to remain part of France and the relationship is clearly beneficial for them.

Funnily enough in the 90s 2 of the 3 islands seceded and asked to rejoin france, but france declined. I think this was a mistake, it would have been better for all involved, also mayotte, as they wouldnt have been overrun with immigrants like now.
@howtoappearincompletely9739
@howtoappearincompletely9739 Месяц назад
@@ldubt4494 Yes, both Anjouan/Nzwani and Mohéli/Mwali seceded in 1997, although Mohéli/Mwali rejoined Comoros the following year. Anjouan/Nzwani wasn't conclusively returned to the fold until it was invaded by Comorian forces in 2008. Most of the Comorian immigrants to Mayotte are Anjouanais, so you're probably right that the level of immigration to Mayotte would not have become such an issue had France acceded to the Anjouanais' request for reannexation. I imagine the French government regarded the burden of administering Anjouan/Nzwani not to have been worth the extra territory, given that it retains Mayotte. Moreover, accepting the annexation request of a territory that had seceded illegally would probably have opened up France to diplomatic criticism which would have been best avoided.

For a country of it's "stature" the only viable path is basically to become a tax haven or some sort of global trading depot... And it's not exactly in the right place for this. It's sad, but basically all of these island countries are completely unviable in the modern age. Those Pacific island countries are not much different.

There was a time of great production in Haiti. And also a certain tranquility, between the 1930s and 1957 when Haiti occupied an important place in the Caribbean. Politically, there was some stability. Haiti had a lot of production in just about every branch. There have also been major advances, particularly in the area of health and economic development. After this time, Haiti lived an era, with the Duvalier, of retrograde dictatorship and obscurantist. If we take for example the case of Trujillo, in the Dominican Republic, a dictatorship as fierce as that of the Duvaliers, Trujillo had an economic project for the Dominican Republic. He laid the foundations that allowed the Dominican Republic to develop. Even Nicaragua with Somoza and Paraguay with Stroessner were dictatorships that were the fruit of the US Big Stick doctrine. What has happened is that this Duvalier dictatorship, and this is where there is an inflection point, has come to a time, the 1960s, when the countries of Latin America, where the world is experiencing a leap forward. So Haiti missed the development of the industrial revolution of 1860 and the technological revolution of the 50s and 60s. Because at that time, with Duvalier, we entered a period of economic, political and social decline. This two-track society is strengthened. And that’s where the distance begins to be established between Haiti and other countries. This distance will become a gap.
