This is what she exclaimed following it: "Is that guy for real? Try being 9 months pregnant with your first born when you hear about that horrific event, living less than 50 miles away from where it happened! Your oldest uncle, raikun, was born a week after Sharon Tate was murdered! Do you know how scary it is to be 20 years old, with a husband working night shifts, your first baby on the way, and almost due, and you hear about someone being killed when she was also pregnant? I know the word "offensive" gets people laughed at these days, but I feel like it must be used to appropriately encapsulate what's wrong with Farrands' last 3 films. This is a filmmaker who goes beyond the realm of "poor taste" and breaches the truly offensive. You can have gratuitous violence in your movie, but when you have gratuitous violence *and* a scene with a real-life figure telling her therapist "I do miss the sex" when talking about how OJ would beat her, *and* present a conspiracy theory as fact in order to make OJ look better, it is clear you don't view the people involved in this true story as people; you view them as convenient objects for your exploitation movie. The entire premise of Haunting of Sharon Tate, her having premonitions of the murders, exists solely so the movie can have a higher body count. If there was no supernatural slant, they wouldn't be able the show the murders until the end, meaning the screenplay would have to focus on personal relationships or character development that Farrands doesn't have the talent to handle. He just wanted to make a slasher movie and knew nobody would care unless he attached it to a famous crime.

Money. I know virtually nothing about this director, but he clearly keeps getting films made. This means his films, as bad as they are, are likely profitable. With that in mind, people will always toss money at him to make more (at least until they're not profitable anymore...) In the meantime, he can wave money, probably a decent amount, in front of actors (I agree with Amanda, a large part of the budgets of these films likely goes to the main star), and that's good enough for them. Acting is hard in that way. Unless you can write your own material, an actor is completely beholden to what they're offered. This means frequently taking work you'd never want to watch yourself. But work is work, and bills need to be paid. I know lots of people who work in theater, and they audition all the time for plays they think are garbage. But a gig's a gig.

As a woman of color: can we STOP glorifying the actions of serial killers? Like, much of the "smart" or "genius" behavior attributed to serial killers comes down to color and class of the killer and the victims. If your victims are queer, an ethnic or racial minority, women, sex workers, or homeless people, congrats, you're a genius for pick the VERY people police and society doesn't really care about. He literally just hung around, pretended to injured, lured some women in (a big note, not all women fell for it and that pissed him off) at night to his car, and then would leave, assault them, and play with their corpses. Gross. Also, the romantic way people portray male serial killers is 100% sexist. He wasn't suave or charming, he raped and murder girls for fun. "He was charming and handsome and thoughtful" and a crazy killer who took pleasure in hurting people because he could. The way male serial killers get justified is just exhausting to hear and worse to have it glorified. He was a white guy who used social pressure to slaughter women and he got away with it because cops are notoriously incompetent and think highly of white guys. Like, it boggles the mind how "smart" he was when really he was lucky everyone around him was dumb and arrogant. Could be emotional intelligence, to know that the police are idiots, lawyers are cocky, and no one believes those they deem below them, sure. But it doesn't take a genius to read his wikipedia and go "so everyone was just blind and ignorant and he could have been stopped many times if people would pay attention to the victims and those around him going, that's him officer." Oh, he was a master of disguise? No, he was generic. He was just a white guy who practiced faces in the mirror. Oh, he never left evidence at the crimes scenes? Bruh, the police ignored an exact tip to who he was, what he drove, and how he looked AND he'd use his vehicle to bury the bodies in the woods or parks around his area. That's not meticulous planning, that's understanding how "if I move the evidence, there's no evidence." He once planned his escape, was noticed and reported, and the police did nothing... Infuriating how many woman who brutalized and killed because a white guy got lucky. Disgusting.

I have a weird connection to the Ted Bundy story, (not this movie, but the real one.) In high school I used to go to some events with my partner from the school newspaper. She got excitable about everything, panicking at the smallest event. When a football was passed in her general direction at a game, she screamed and dove for cover. She always drove, and you can imagine what someone like her was like on the rode. I was always grabbing onto the "oh god" strap as I was swung around the passenger seat of her Volkswagon Beetle. Well, those of you who know the Bundy story might know where this is going. One day I was in the newspaper room at the school, and we all heard her screaming from two stories down. She ran all the way up the stairs and into the room, crying and shouting, "I have Ted Bundy's car!" She had had car trouble and had looked in the user's manual. There on the front page was Ted Bundy's signature. She had it checked out and sure enough, she had wound up with his Volkswagon Beetle when she bought it used.

Its message was that sometimes the most dangerous people aren’t the creepers in the corners, they’re the people that you know who seem perfectly normal, and they might even be the people closest to you. This movie’s message seems to be: serial killer cool.
@redscorner4324
@redscorner4324 2 года назад
Yeah, and most people who don't really invest into researching true crime aren't aware that serial killers get really good at something called "compartmentalizing" which is a way they can remove themselves from their urges to kill and do harm to others while acting seemingly normal. Yes, by casting Zac Effron they played into Bundy's "charming persona" but Effron played him kinda off. Even if you came into the movie not knowing about Bundy you knew he was guilty of something if not the murders. And the movie heavily follows Liz's view in how Ted keeps emotionally manipulating her and dragging her along through the whole process of his arrests and escapes.
@LadyDreamfyre

Also Extremely Wicked was based on Ted Bundy's ex girlfriend's testimony and her book. Sure we see his """good""" sides but that's her perspective. She's the main character and we know it's not an objective pov just retelling the investigation, etc. This movie shows us how she spirals into alcoholism as she realises that the man she loved was a monster all along, and it's honestly heartbreaking, I felt genuinely bad for her.

They did something similar with a miniseries on Netflix about a serial rapist. You don’t even see who the perpetrator is until the last episode. It was all focused on the dedicated women who kept looking and making connections when others had already given up. It also focuses heavily on the victims, giving them a voice and power. If was also one of the rare movies that actually showed how truly incompetent the police work was to show that these serial perpetrators aren’t some evil mad geniuses that media makes them out to be. I thought it was the most unique approach I’ve seen to making a movie about true crime and it was incredibly moving. It managed to be respectful yet truthful.

This is Amanda's origin story for her hunting down this Daniel person and making a true crime movie with him as the subject. She will setup shots and go into detail why he has failed as a director and how to properly direct. Except then there will be a take a that end, which she filmed before everything saying all this was fake and no one was harmed. But he's been missing for 6 months. We know. We all know. And no one will care. Yep that was my dark mind coming up with a random story that will never happen in this reality but it happens in another reality and I'm just channeling that image.

I like that you regularly shoutout Zodiac. I'm not really into the true crime genre (or even fake murder stuff) but I watched that movie with my mom and sister over Christmas and we all really enjoyed it. It really put the focus on the madness created in the people trying to catch the Zodiac killer, not romanticizing the madness of the killer himself. True crime often struggles with the balance between humanizing/honoring the victims and dramatizing the horror of their deaths. Zodiac kind of side stepped the whole mine field by not spending as much time on the actual murders (save a few scenes). For anyone who hasn't seen it, I recommend!

Okay, if you want to watch something good about Ted Bundy, there are two documentaries and one movie called "No Man of God". One documentary is on Netflix and the other is on Amazon. The one on Amazon is more about the women in his life, whether it was his girlfriend or the police women investigating him, and even is youngest brother was interviewed. As well as survivors and victim's families. Luke Kirby is phenomenal and scary as Bundy. He's scary for several reasons. One, he looks like him, especially in certain angles. Two, the behaviors and mannerisms are nailed. Three, Luke Kirby reminds us that Bundy was human, as much as people don't like to admit it, he was a human being who did horrible monstrous things he killed because he wanted to and he liked it. The movie didn't glorify him
