Real spiders seriously hate high-pitched noises so when girls scream at them. It's only making things worse! They would seriously hate this spider imposter!
That would be the most effective alarm clock ever! No one could sleep through... that. Even better, people would prolly smash it, prompting them to get a new alarm clock!!😁
Yeah, I liked how it looked. I think the quality could have been bumped up a LOT with the inclusion of a soundtrack. It really does affect the game as a whole.
PushingUpRoses lol. I believe it! Funny though if I hadn’t watched this review I swear I would have come across this someday thinking it’s gonna be amazing based off looks. Bad UI’s in adventure game can kill it! Thanks for playing this so I don’t have to. 😂
The main guy sounds incredibly unlikable, the complete opposite of Guybrush Threepwood! It’s interesting how immediately off-putting I found it when a character hates cats versus how funny I found it when a character hates porcelain. Shows which game had smarter writers.
What is it with 90s point-and-click adventure game protagonists hating cats? Quickthorpe from Fable (1996). George Stobbart from Broken Sword (1996). Manny Calavera from Grim Fandango (1998). They each have their scene where they express their hatred for cats.
It seems like they focused way too much on the art and graphics and not enough on everything else. It is a shame, because most of the graphics look really great.
So, I guess the one thing this Fable has going for it is that it’s got a sense of realism to it. No musical accompaniment to your location. Enemies just die with no fanfare or writhing. Just like real life! In a fantasy realm. K.
Oh man! I actually own this game and have it installed on my old Pentium-120 machine. I played it for about an hour and like it's just a BAD game in my opinion. Not only does the game load EVERY SINGLE DAMN animation from the CD (so expect to wait at least 30 seconds for each animation) but the gameplay is also just not very pleasant. Not a very good game imo. But your video is excellent!
There is actually a room you can get in the maze at the last part of the game (you don't need to go there to finish the game) where you meet that old man you will kill in the end to finish the game, anyway he tell you your all quest was actually a lie and he was in league the elder that send you in order to collect the gems so he could take over the world or something along those lines. Not that this really pose an improvement to the story line but a least it exist. Oh, and the game crash during dialog each time you get there.
With the no music and... interesting voice acting, this game reminds me of Zelda’s adventure for the cdi. That’s not something that I want to be reminded of when playing a game
Oh my goodness, I LOVE this game! Mind you, it's most certainly nostalgia goggles, but I was so excited to see you review it. I still have my copy from the nineties! The art pulled me in, and the environments/characters felt much harsher than the KQ games I grew up with, which made it feel somehow more real, to me, and less like I was watching fantasy tropes play out on screen. Just several worlds of jerks and Quickthorpe bumbling incapably through it all. I even liked the story, convoluted as it was. Definitely a Roger Wilco moment of somehow getting caught up in schemes and histories much more complex than his own. Anyhow, I'll stop rambling about loving this game, which is undoubtedly brimming with flaws, but thanks again for another great review! "You took my lollipop!" "AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT!"
This game had potential, but feels truly incomplete. Too bad Steam is loaded with games that fit this description. (Steam has become a hub for great games, while also becoming the world's largest collection of shovelware.)
Steam is the Amazon/eBay/etc. of video games. Quality is there, but because it's the biggest game in town (which accepts anything anyone wants to sell) the quality can easily get buried behind piles of cheap junk.
@@chrism1518 If you think I was talking about the entire gaming market instead of the PC market (which should have been implied by the context in the comment I was replying to), I have a pointy metal tower to sell you.
I hate people who have cats but let them run free to ruin other people's property. If I had a dog but let him run outside to shit in other people's yards and vegetable gardens, if you woke up to see dog paw prints and scratches from their nails on your car every morning, if you found dog hair and fleas on your patio/deck/balcony furniture from a dog that wasn't your's, not to mention the territory marking piss you would find everywhere, would that be okay? Why can't people who decide to take responsibility for an animal, I don't know, actually take responsibility for an animal? When I walk my dog I actually carry a bottle of water just in case she pees on someone's yard, I'll try to make her pee at home but if it happens in someone else's yard as I'm walking her I'll use the water to wash as much of it down. If she poops in a yard, I'll try so that absolutely doesn't happen, but if it does happen I carry bags so I can pick all of it up and throw it away in my garbage. And sometimes doing things the right way actually takes less effort to do than to do them the wrong way, yet, it seems I see people go OUT OF THEIR WAY to do things the wrong way. I don't know, whatever. I'm out of coffee.
@@dsandoval9396 Cats are not dogs. They are their own master and will come and go as it pleases them. Outdoor cats can not be controlled the way a dog in a leash can.. ofc you can walk cats in leashes too, but it is not at all as stimulating for them as ruling on their own.. :) So yeah, it's problematic to ask for cat owners to watch out for their outdoor cats as if they were dogs 😅
This was a fantastic review as always, PUR. While it's always dissapointing when an old game we once wanted to play turns out to be shite later on when we do get to play it, it certainly always makes for good ranting material! I know this isn't normally your style or type of game you'd review, but I'd really like to know your thoughts on Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time. I don't see much on it in terms of reviews or anything, really. And it's a shame too since I find it to be a very heartwarming adventure game with funny dialogue, interesting characters and lots of content to do both in terms of single-player and multiplayer playthroughs. I think you'd enjoy it, and if nothing else have a fun time with a somewhat old-classic. (At least, I find it to be a classic.)
I remember playing it back in 1996 (I was 7) and the sound I had was from the “bib bib speaker in the pc” and even tough I loved it ! The ironic harsh humor fits perfectly with the danish humor en general !
I've never heard of this game, but just from the footage you've shown, I immediately see scenes that could have been swiped whole-cloth from KQ1-6, QFG1-3, and/or even just straight up MI1-3 It almost makes me think that maybe they outsourced the writing, or changed writers after the artwork was complete and simply changed the dialog to fit the artwork they had.
This game wasn't very good, but it still had some things worth noticing. It had really nicely drawn landscapes with very light coloring that gives the whole game a very lighthearted atmosphere. The raunchy humor also hints that it might have been intended to be a parody of both Lucasarts and Sierra. The problem, besides the buggy UI, may have been that it was extremely rushed, to the point that several plot details and seemingly important characters are completely overlooked. With enough lore and more depth behind the characters and the world the story takes place in, Fable could have been a classic.
I kind of live in casket town because my house happens to be on the second floor of a funeral home my dad runs. I played Crash Team Racing in the casket room. Jealous Roses?
I'm actually happy you reviewed this, yeah I know it wasn't suppose to be good but I watch an "abridged" video floating around YT for some time highlighting all the YTP moments (kinda disappointed though you didn't mention the gator-lady coming on to our hero about his "short shorts" wanting to play him to sleep with her bongos LOL WTF!?). I really like the artwork too, backgrounds are beautifully rendered, just seemed like a bunch of puzzle pieces that don't fit, that's why to me it felt like it wasn't trying to be more like Discworld then Kings Quest with Monkey Island humor. I wonder if this was the product of a troubled development cycle? Could explain why it's so abrupt in places, not just the ending confrontation, some ideas not fully realized? Anyway, great video. Now I'm wondering if one day you'll explore the Kyrandia series by Westwood.
The "Oh yeah, I have a girlfriend; she lives in Canada and is _totally real!"_ part definitely makes more sense in the original ending, from the sound of it.
Wait, the protagonist hates cats? 0/10 -- would demand refund! (CATS FOREVER!) That said, did you ever play "Eric the Unready"? It felt like a successful parody of Adventure Games.
that "siren" looked like a totally normal lady wearing fetish stuff also the snake dying and thumping unceremoniously to the ground cracked me up. poor snake
Yeah that seemed pretty awful with - from the sounds of it - no kind of build up or reasoning, just "mwahaha, what a twist!" Though the US one sounded sort of silly, too. Reminds me of the ending of Resident Evil 4. Great game, but god the ending.
The interesting part is that I probably would love a darker ending like that if there were SOME kind of build up. Better foreshadowing (not sure there's really ANY besides me speculating on a few quips), just something that would make you go "Ooohhhh, NOW it all makes sense." I thought the UK ending, though out of left field, was one of the most interesting things about it in a way, hah.
I hope Roses will review Poptropica at some point. I know they're supposed to be for preteens, but the puzzles and adventure elements are still challenging and enjoyable enough for adults. Maybe I'm just bad at adventure games, but every time I play a new island, I can't get through the whole thing without referring to a walk-through at least once.
Thanks for another great video, PUR! You mentioned that you really wanted a Monkey Island style comedy adventure in a fantasy setting- did you ever play the Simon the Sorcerer games? I played them when I was a kid (and probably WAY too young, given some of the humour...) and really used to love them. You can get both of them on GoG, worth checking out!
Ooh I still have this, loved it as a kid! The art and setting were fantastic and the dark and sarcastic themes were cool. I guess the actual gameplay was kinda whatever, but still loved it as a kid
I had a physical copy of this one, back in the day. It really caught my eye in the store, the art looked so pretty in the back of the box, and it turned to be a real stinker. It was really dissapointing, and I never finished it.
Ha! I always thought there was something wrong with my old PC back in the day because I couldn't hear any music in this game, turns out there was no music at all, thanks PushingUpRoses, you just solved a big mystery for me :)
You and Scarulhu should do a collaborative video since both of you have such love for Adventure games. This video was a very enjoyable and hilarious review thanks for making my day!
Death is only the end if you assume the story is about you. ^^ I played this game with my mother when I was little and the ending creeped me out. I couldn't sleep the whole night. But I think I enjoyed the rest of it? I am not sure....the only thing I remember is the stone head that talks, my friend and I roleplayed some scenes....
This one reminds me of the Discworld game i found for the Playstation. I bought it from a second-hand store, and I was a big fan of Sir Terry's writing. Some of the character interactions were good & funny, but the mechenics of it are very much like this one.
Hi I love this game. My favorite point and click adventure of all time by far. Fond old memories, hundreds of hours giggling like an idiot and basking in the simpleness. Good times. Personal opinion of course. At the time it felt like it had character (and still has).
one thing this game got right was the big box which i owned, was pretty unique designed to look like a book and opened like one, that's about all it was good for
the graphic is good, i like those portrait of animated close up of the characters...like that warhammer game shadow of the horned rat and the forever awesome jagged alliance 2
She's got such a lovely voice, I could listen to it all day without getting bored. As usual, that was a nice vid, funny, smart and very entertaining. Well done.
That spider shriek really belongs in a part 2 of your video talking about sounds in video games. It’s just so superb. The sign waggling sound as well deserves a spot up there. Too damn good. They’re just so nostalgic. Of what exactly? Fucked if I know.
I remember playing this as a kid and really enjoying it. Of course, I loved adventure games back then (still do, wish it was as big a genre as it was back in the day) so I'd play just about anything if it was point and click. I remember spending hours (or possibly minutes) futzing around with Putt-Putt and Freddi Fish just to get my fix. Ah, memories...
as a child i adored this game. these pictures and sounds brought me back to my childhood. except i didn't see the giant's home! with the key under the straw pillow haha
I recently discovered your channel and I love it! You do an excellent job with your reviews and editing; can't wait until I have a few hours to myself, so I can peruse your catalog! I'm opening a channel soon myself and considering adventure game reviews...
I absolutely remember this game fro my childhood. During that phase i played adventure games almost exclusively with walkthroughs, because i was a stupid teenager that had no idea how to think. ButI do remember it fondly. Although that may be because there were scantily clad buxxom babes around and that was just what teenage me wanted to see in a game... Also the ending was very weird. in the version i played (german) Quickthorpe sits on a spaceship-seat and puts on some kind of mind-transfer-helmet. it's implied his brain is then pumped full of knowledge, leaving him to be locked up in a psych ward. Fun times!
Yes ! You’ve made another excellent reciew of one of my childhood’s favorite (yes, I used that word -.-‘) point & click’ers. Awesome ! Thank you so much. I still have the case it came in. Looks like a big book I’d love to see a review of ‘Realms of the Haunting’ - a creepy a$$ game from back in the day, that’ll haunt you for quite some time
I hope you didn’t take my comment as a negative shot fired at you. It was in no way intended to, I’m just thrilled you’ve made a review of a game from my childhood :-)
Just writing to say I love your content, point and click is my favorite genre since I was a kid , my first one was Sam and max hit the road, I've played most of the games in the genre and I really like to hear you talking about them
There is a Introduction you can choose on the starting screen. This serves as an intro. I liked the art style when I played it back in the late 90s. As for the voice acting, I played the German version and there it was good. I just checked it and it is not a nostalgic memory. Considering other aspect I can't tell much, only that it had some massiv bugs. What I played I did like.
Oh! I remember playing this although I wasn't aware that there was an edit where the ending was concerned. We had the UK version when I was a kid and honestly that part confused me the most. Getting all the way through it only to get a 'hey you were crazy all along' was so disappointing as a kid.
I have no idea why your channel came up on my feed, or why it was this video specifically, but i have to say i'm a fan of your content (I'm very much enjoying your Goosebumps and Murder, she wrote videos) ^_^
Ah man, I remember randomly finding this game at a bootleg/used game store when I was a teen. (it was South-East Asia) The game felt... average. Adequate. Fine. Kinda annoying and not-good at times. I was an adventure game junkie back then and I wanted any point-and-click adventure game I could get my hands on. It was hard to find older games, or even adventure games then. But you nailed it why this game just isn't good, Roses. Thank you.
