This is a British show and they had to send this lady all the way to *Missouri* to find someone for her to meet? and it's your town?? What are the chances 🤯🤣
I remember if they did sent their bigger contestants to talk to people much bigger than themselves they all went to the US. I hate to say it but what does that tell you?
@@jaimefrenchofficial did you used to have a RU-vid channel in the mid 2000s? I ask because I used to watch a channel back when RU-vid was kinda new my oldest child who was like 10 so 2007ish she loved that channel and she looked exactly like you but I can't remember the name , I was just curious
I almost feel like the British doctor was saying, “Listen, you don’t want to be an American, do you? Because, I swear, you’re heading STRAIGHT to Missouri if you don’t get with the program!” 😂
As a Brit I can confirm that’s exactly what they were doing. All our tv shows and films were full of impressions of Americans being overweight, under educated back in the early 2000’s especially then gun friendly around 2013/14
My "town" (we didn't live in town) was recently on TV because it got hit by the first tornado ever recorded. That was less fun to see, though, but I was going "that's my friend's grandma's house and her aunt's house and they're destroyed....but her grandma's concrete cow is still standing. Dinner bell might be gone...." does that count? 😂
In the early naughties, we in Britain went through a real fad of Sort Your Life Out TV. Basically shows that let you gawk at people under the disguise of tough love. How Clean is Your House? You Are What You Eat. What Not to Wear... Even Supernanny and Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares came from that era.
true! everyone seems to be really keen to trash the weight loss shows these days, but I thought 'supernanny' was the really appalling idea. way to make sure your kids lose all respect for you & have something to lob at you in arguments for the next 20 years ig! at least the weight loss shows (except 'fat families' & irrc a couple of 'you are what you eat's) the participants are only setting themselves up for embarrassment, no loved ones involved!
600 pound life question - the restricted calories prior to bariatric surgery is called a liver shrinkage diet. A fatty liver could make the laparoscopic surgery impossible, meaning the surgery might have to be stopped altogether or in some cases the surgeon will have to perform an ‘open’ surgery instead (meaning a large incision, longer surgery time and recovery). Restricted calories and sugars up to 6 weeks prior to surgery will make the body ‘use up’ the stored carbohydrates from the liver for energy - resulting in the desired shrinkage. I hope this makes sense!
I’m from the UK and watched this show too! You need to watch ‘Embarrassing Bodies’ which was also a channel 4 program with Dr Christian. Oh and ‘Naked Attraction’. Channel 4 really did the most!
The heart foundation diet in Oz is eating unlimited veg soup every day, then steak and bananas every other day. It works as long as you can stay on it. Some people say the soup gets boring but you can add as many different spices as you like.
Dr. Christian Jessen (the doctor on SSvsSS) has body dysmorphia and exercise addiction. He was on his own programme in the UK, where he was weighed and his body fat was a really low percentage. He spoke about how much time he spends exercising. It was pretty clear how serious his body issues were. He has also admitted in newspapers that he dealt with bulimia at the beginning of his television career. So although he might be a good fit for the show, in some respects, as he has dealt with eating disorders himself (or thats how he justified it, when interviewed about the show), he is probably just a little gleeful that Betsy has to be weighed at the zoo and he doesn’t, due to his own issues.
The doctor guy is kinda sadistic. He really enjoys making overweight people feel awful and he doesn't even do a good job of masking it. Like bro, that's a sick way to get your validation for being thinner (not healthier)
From his other television appearances, I genuinely believe he smiles when he feels awkward. The show is a shit storm in general, but I don't think he's personally happy to hear about Betsy's suffering, I tjust think he struggles with emoting in difficult scenarios.
@@amelieg246 I personally don't emote with much emotion and people would accuse me of all sorts of emotions that I was NOT feeling. I just don't show much emotion but that doesn't mean I don't genuinely care or feel a certain type of way. I like to believe the doctor guy was being genuine with what I have read in the comments about his own issues. Idk, but I think a lot of people are reading him wrong but I also haven't seen a full episode of this show and can be totally wrong. Could he sound more empathic? Sure. But similar to me, he could have difficulties in that department. So I have at least tried to really emphasis my feelings through my voice so that way people won't think I'm faking or think that I'm feeling a different type of way.
I had my first BPM energy drink at 17 and I got heart palpitations for the first time. I don't have a heart condition, so I can't fathom being able to drink that much.
He’s more than likely immune to the caffeine at this point as the body can essentially block the effects of it after long term high use. He’s probably tired due to sugar crashes and eating like shit. If he stopped consuming caffeine it would be effective again, but he’s probably addicted at this point
@@pressheart64caffeine might have a positive effect on your thinking, but that won’t stop it from screwing up your heart rhythm or killing you if you drink it in high doses.
Hear me out. I used to have problems with under eating, and I found SS vs SS to be very helpful. For me the method to the madness was “if you wouldn’t treat someone else like that, why are you doing it to yourself”. I’ve been weight restored for 3 years now.
yes i agree, except ive had it from both sides. when i was 13 it helped me stop under eating, the pendulum swung the other way at 21 and it helped me stop binging. i’ve had a healthy relationship with food for 5 years now
Gotta love how they fail to mention that even someone like myself who has been skinny their entire life risks diabetes from intaking a bunch of sugar just as an overweight person.
Yep! I’m not fat but I have been close to prediabetes according to my doctor because at a point in my life I was consuming a LOT of sugar. Had to nip that in the bud real quick.
Yep. And most people don't understand that. People think that when you're skinny, you can have an unbalanced diet and be okay, especially if you're working out. Exercise doesn't reverse the effects of an unbalanced diet. People are so uneducated and ignorant, it makes my blood boil.
I’ve never been diagnosed as pre diabetic but I’m sure at one point I was close. I would binge eat sweets all the time. That was 10 years ago and I’ve stopped. But yeah they should def mention it
Some of them lay into the heavy one and some of them lay into the skinny person. There was one with a woman who only drinks tea and sugar, eats very little. They did a bone scan, blood draws, had her meet people in recovery for anorexia. There's others too, but that one stood out to me.
@@annasleeplessowl8157I remember the lady who ate a precise amount of Brazil nuts everyday. I watched this show over a decade ago but I still think about her whenever I buy Brazil nuts lol
I remember her. There was also a person who, when switching the table round for her lunch with her partner, had only a blank plate with a cigarette on it. Of course, no one smoked it, but that was that person's meal for that time of the day lol
I burst out laughing (at work) when you said, "I partied in this trailer park!!" I told a group of classmates, who were from bigger cities than me, that young people in my neck of the woods threw ragers in the (literal) woods and/or tipped cows...and no one believed me. 😂🤷🏽♀️
I've always wondered about cow tipping. I've certainly seen people try it but it isn't possible. It would take like ten strong teens and for the cow to be sick or otherwise retarded to stay put until you tip them
Sorry if this has already been answered 900 times! 😆 The reason bariatric surgery pre-op diet is so restricted has 2 purposes. 1. They are about to reduce the size of the stomach, so the patient has an opportunity to get used to small amounts of nutrient-dense foods beforehand. This helps reduce the risk of accidentally eating more than the post-op stomach can hold, which causes nausea and vomiting and is generally miserable. 2. It’s not meant to be permanent. It’s basically a pre-op crash diet that operates on the theory that the body will start breaking down its own fat and nutrient stores when it needs more than 1200 calories. It can be difficult to ventilate patients who carry a lot of their body weight around their midsection because the anesthesia prevents the body from assisting via muscle tension. The weight applies the majority of its force on the vena cava and causes stress on the heart and lungs during surgery. That’s why Dr. Now tries to do his procedures as quickly as possible. They don’t have to maintain such a strict diet long term. Bariatric surgery is generally a whole program with long term support and they adjust the diet throughout that time. Or at least the good ones are.
So many ppl (myself included) who had ED's in the 2010s watched this show religiously. Which I feel like says a lot about what this show actually promoted versus it's supposed goal.
I feel like I was the only person who got anything good out of this show lol it was heinous looking back but at the time it was the wakeup call I needed
Ooooohhh. Eating disorder. I thought you meant erectile dysfunction and I was super confused. Ok that makes way more sense. Hey you said had. So I’m hoping you are ok now? Yeah? Keep your head up and keep doing the right thing. I know people don’t hear this often, but you matter a lot to those around you. Gotta take care of yourself ok?
The fart sound that’s made close to the end of the video when you zoom in on the “flesh colored underwear” made me laugh so hard that I probably just woke up my entire family😂
I just watched your "I'm not doing well" video. Jamie, im so sorry you're going thru that. I've struggled with depression, ptsd and anxiety for years due to major trauma. No matter how mental health issues are triggered, the result is the same. We suffer and struggle to do life. I love your videos, format and style. You always bring a smile and laughter to my day. Itvmakes me so angry that a lot of channels are shit yet have millions of followers. Your channel by far is superior. You deserve millions!! I understand the pressure of having to push yourself to function because people depend on you. That's so hard. I hope you are seeing a therapist. There's no shame in reaching out for support. It looks like you have so much support and love from those around you and subscribers. Keep doing you boo boo. Everyone is rooting for you. Much love !!
As the mum of a toddler, in what world are they claiming a little child eats this much? My daughter eats half a toast and yells about dinosaurs for breakfast.
My son eats more than I do. He'll smash back 8 eggs for breakfast and want a snack an hour later. He just had pasta, a sandwich and cheese for lunch. He's asking when dinner is and it's only 2:30. My 7 year old isn't quite to that level, but definitely eats a lot. My 10 year old has always been a grazer. She's a light eater. They're going off recommended caloric intake.
@@kunya16 i have 3 boys 12-15. They eat SOOOO much. It sucks groceries r so high. I keep trying to find creative ways to bring the grocery bill down.
@@jaimefrenchofficial I have an idea: the Soup doesn't cover current pop culture, but rather old stuff we may or may not 'member. So it plays like it's a "rerun" of a show from our youth. You could even do ad-breaks in a nostalgic format (Scentbird as sold to us by a certain 1999 beauty vlogger??)
Jamie! As a British person I insist that you 100%..... Carry on doing the British accent it's absolutely killing me and I love it 😂 Being as Betsy is in your town I would love it if you could do a follow up on her! I'm curious to see how she's doing since she made her debut appearance on British TV, thank you!
You're SO likeable!! I'm a 41 year old woman with a family, but I literally considered trolling JoJo for messing with you!! 😄😄 I didn't, of course, but I can't even believe that I considered such a thing! You have something really special and I'm glad that you share it with us! ❤️
Also, how is she the “cake queen”?? And even on the show they put cake behind her for her interview. But then they were saying how most of her calories come from chocolate. And honestly i don’t buy that most of her calories come from chocolate. They didn’t even show her eating a disproportionately large amount of chocolate for her meals! Make it make sense haha
"Why didn't they have Jake meet somebody who's skinnier than him and addicted to stimulants?" Frankly, it would be hard to find such a person because being as underweight as Jake will kill you faster than being obese in most cases, and stimulants expedite that.
@@promisedjubileedaniels when I was 17 my whole diet was caffeine until dinner time, and at one point I was also on diet pills and I had a palpitation so strong it knocked me to the ground. I did a bunch of research and took caffeine a lot more seriously for the rest of my life.
@@amelieg246 oooo, I never found any of the episodes where they visited an even skinnier person, I bet they were pretty intense. I did see some episodes where they had a group of severely underweight ladies all trying to overcome their EDs together with guidance.
Yeah they eventually got rid of that. The show tried to clarify and say "oh it was expired food" but there was not a SPOT of blue mould on any of the bread items poured down those tubes so they had probably JUST expired, which still can be put to better use than that. My loaf of bread always says "expires by this date " but it only starts to go bad like days even up to a week after the expiry date.
I graduated from high school in 2014… lol ten years later and I still mentally feel like I’m 18 , and so it’s a bit of a shock when I wake up to a husband, three kids and a mortgage 😂
I’m 42 & I CANNOT believe it. How am I this old? I’m still just a dumb kid😭 My parents, in their 70s, said the same, so I guess this feeling never goes away & we’re all just faking it forever lol
To answer the question “how did appetite change in 5 days” I have an up and down relationship with food. If I’m sad, I can go days without eating. When I start coming back from the sadness, I realize I can only eat so much before I’m full and it’s nothing like when I’m eating normally. Like it only takes 3 days then when I come back to eating I’ll only be able to eat half of a sandwich and some fries rather than smashing the whole sandwich, fries, and something for dessert and could still go for a bag of chips. To make a long explanation longer while summing up why I explained that😅 your stomach shrinks when you don’t eat and expands when you eat more than necessary.
I swear you're the only RU-vidr with actual ad breaks and I love it lol, it makes me feel like I'm not constantly having my train of thought interrupted. Forever one of my fave channels.
as a Scottish woman, here's my question to 19 year old Jaime French of Missouri; how the heck did you get a hold of our daytime television viewing material?
When they were talking about how many calories Jake was eating I wondered if they counted the calories from his energy drinks. It appears that is where he was getting most of his caloric intake from.
I mean assuming he drank 6 RedBulls (probably, based on the color, noted taste, and the fact that this was 2014) which is around 100 calories, plain noodles (allegedly) which are like 150 cals and literally nothing else, yeah I think that is his total intake.
@K.C-2049My bff was like that and as a chubby bunny I had to introduce him to real food. It was a slow process but he eats actual food now and only has an energy drink maybe once or twice a week. He is now a healthy weight and has gained a little butt that can actually how his pants up.
Probably a weird comment, but you're the only channel in which I will watch and actually love your sponsor ads along with the rest of your content. Always impressed with your talent! 😊💗
I LOVE when you edit your videos and take away the music and make the funny noises, shoes squeaking and obviously the farts 😂😂 I’ve never watched these shows, I’m familiar with them enough but man the producers are ruthless and basically have no compassion. Love all of your videos!! You’re my favorite ❤️
The reason Dr Now goes so drastic is most people are underestimating what they eat. HE tells them 1200 and they end up 500-1000 above that usually. It is very rare anyone actually measures as the need to and hits the calories he has set out.
Your English accent has me laughing every time. Used to also watch this programme called ‘what not to wear - trinny and susannah’ and they would put women in a 360 mirrored room to point out their flaws 🙈🇬🇧
They really make more of a spectacle of the supersizer, even the way they describe each other's food at 15:05 and 15:45 proves that. You don't hear them describing Jake's Red bull as a "sugar ladened non-hydrating no nutritional value energy drink."
not to defend this show, because it's ridiculous, but they would be absolutely insane to the "super skinnies" too. Like there was one episode where they took all the sugar cubes that the skinny put in her tea each month and like built a dollhouse with it or something to showcase how terrible her diet was
Oh don't worry, in other episodes they're horrific to the super skinny people too. Making them meet people with anorexia, shaming them over their sugar consumption etc.
@@HussyHarryet the skinny's meet people with anorexia? I've watched the show, and the anorexic people are part of an inpatient treatment program separate from the feeding clinic. Has that changed?
Jaime! As a fellow midwesterner, you should know that there is an episode of my 600 lb life that takes place in Hills, Iowa. It’s a very tiny town outside of Iowa City. At the beginning of the episode the subjects boyfriend brings her two slices of Casey’s pizza and the cheesy potato bites for breakfast and it’s like… dude I really can’t fault him or her for eating that 😭😭
@@baylorsailor*breakfast foods* are overrated. I started eating whatever I wanted for breakfast and it’s made a difference, it opens up a lot of lean proteins and vegetables. Also portion plays a role. I’ve started eating 3-4 small dishes like Japanese, Koreans, etc do.
Casey’s food is disgusting. I’m an Iowan and Casey’s is so overhyped. Not to mention the tiny towns that have four of them because Casey’s bought out every other competitor.
So many new videos and I'm SO excited!! I don't care if anyone else on RU-vid has already covered a subject, I just like watching your recaps and reactions!
Every time your videos pop up on RU-vid, I think to myself, "No, I'm not interested in that subject." But being a faithful fan that I am I either watch or listen to them anyway and I always end up being intrigued and entertained. I am now convinced you could do a video on a pot of bubbling hot water and make it interesting. You have a gift lady, a real gift.
Girlll. Smh. 🤦🏼♀️ "checkmate" 😂😂 ...you've got to be kidding me rn, & how old are you?!? Like "ohh btw, I also got banned from one"... Congratulations honey! You've officially announced that you live up to the stereotypical "trailer trash" name. 💯👏🏆🥳 Someone get this chic an award, maybe a gold star for her desperate attempt to one up Jamie. How embarrassing. Smh, lmao soo sad. I'll pray for you & more importantly your unfortunate neighbors. 🙏
Dr Christian has always cracked me up. I remember when I first saw him on unusual Bodies or whatever it was, and I thought he was so unintentionally mean 😂
I had to pause to say back to you how insightful and deep your observation was about how "signing up for these type of shows might be a cry for help" 😮. 😢. I think u might be on to something. How sad that its sort of turned into a spectacle for clicks. Lets hope that help is offered for these folks! ❤
Lol I watch both you and Michelle I really enjoy hearing drastically contradicting opinions I generally find my opinion to be somewhere in the middle on most stuff 🤷 and boy was I happy to get this video
Okay, I came here looking for an explanation... I watch both of them, too! I love their content. And Kiana, too! 😆 I'm just not privy to the tea, I guess. I just watch what I like 🤷🏻♀️ and if they all keep me laughing and motivated, that's what counts.
I was scared for big girl. Imagine your body is used to potato and chicken in BIG amount but then it just gets 1 glass of sugary water. I was afraid she’ll get instant health problems after that. They could’ve at least give her eggs and salad for breakfast. 😭
Jaime you’re so funny. It’s nice to relax and look at these shows through your eyes and laugh in shock. Going through a rough time in life right now so I appreciate you distracting us when we need it. I adore you.
There was also a terrible British Show called You Are What You Eat where they'd put everything a person ate in a whole week on one table. And I think there was always a poo sample collected as well?
There’s this popular RU-vidr who does ads, but he actually respects his audience by not forcing them to watch it. He announces who is sponsoring him at the beginning, and says, “Stick around until the end if you’re interested.” It’s respectful because some of us pay for premium to avoid ads… I can watch his video, and stop right before the ad if I’m not interested. Besides, most people I know will go out of their way to avoid buying whatever the ad is being forced on us…
The moral of this story is, somehow they filmed in your hometown! And that’s the most hilarious part of this to me. What a weird show!! I’m glad I missed that one
Ok, I was almost 400lbs at one point. Always being scolded by the doctor. Finally found one that was sympathetic and also honest. Sometimes that is the difference but I want to start sorta at the beginning. I had a bunch of sexual abuse from early on and ended after my divorce. I starved myself a lot. Being called a pink cow in high-school and kids pretending the ground shook when I walked as a kid. I went days without eating and still lost next to nothing. I ended up with a thyroid problem as a teen and gained more. At one point I just decided that if I was big I would be invisible. I admit sugar was a big thing for me. I got diabetes in my late 20's? So when I got divorced I couldn't eat for a week. I lost a lot and it took a good few months to eat a full meal. I wasn't able to lose past a certain amount but eventually was going to have bariatric surgery. But decided to try ozempic first. I've gotten down to 210lbs. I have a little more to lose but it's changed so much. I also came across some research about rats and food with and without ozempic. The rats were given junk food after having been given regular food after awhile. They took the junk food away and they nearly starved themselves to death not touching normal food. Finally close to death they ate regular food. Now tell me, who is making us fat and sick? They were put on ozempic after the same test and the rats were able to eat regular food quicker. They are doing more research and making different types of the medication now. I gotta say, that med has kept my mind off of food, it opened up a whole new section in my brain. I'm not as anxious either. They think it can help with addiction soon.
let's not be obtuse (not directed at you OP, I just see where this thread is headed), those replying to this, fat people are judged more harshly for their consumption habits, regardless of your personal judgements
Did you watch the video? The one shes reviewing is mostly targeted to the cake lady so thats the main focus. She even states as much in the beginning and again near the end that they purposely mostly focused on her and not Jake. Its not fair to assume because you only see one side that the same isnt true for the other. I promise you theres a judgement for both from most people, neither are healthy. Thats why theyre there.
The calorie count they expect the very large people to drop to makes sense < although super unrealistic > because they are such a ticking time bomb and they are so close to dying or having severe issues from the weight at the very least
The U.K. does have a record of blindly copying/following anything that the U.S.A. does (positive or negative). The over consumption of junk/fast food, seed oils, carbonated beverages and associated health issues not excepted. So, as crappy as this show was, at least they TRIED to learn from the U.S.A.’s mistakes for once 🤷🏻♀️. Happily it’s far from all bad n we also get to enjoy following you Jaime! 😊♥️🇬🇧
You're so right. The calorie intake has to be in relation to weight and muscles. The more a person weighs the more muscles it takes for them to move and the more calories they burn. If they had strapped a bunch of weights onto the skinny guy until the two people weighed the same, he would have quickly run out of energy and needed something more sustainable than just sugar water with caffeine.
I think they put them in an extreme deficit on My 600 lb Life is for a few reasons. The first is so they can prove to Dr Now that they can stick to a diet of a very small amount of food which will be necessary to do after the surgery with a smaller stomach capacity, and also to prep for surgery as getting to as low of a weight as possible will minimize surgery complications. Also giving them a limit of 1200 gives them more wiggle room so if they end up cheating a little or not measuring properly they'll still be in a huge deficit. If they were just trying to lose weight without surgery, there's no reason anyone that large should be eating less than 2000 calories.
Just came across this channel through my wife, and we are watching this as we eat dinner…we live in Missouri, and both blown away when the story was in O’Fallon, then find out you live so close to us! 🤣🤯 subscribed! Lol
I figure the biggest but nicest person they could find was in MO. not being mean to MO but i think that MO has some of the worst health editing to add, I'm fat myself.
When I discovered this show I binged every episode across a couple weeks. Like four episodes every single day. Please tell me why I was so obsessed with it?!
As someone who is currently significantly underweight and struggles with food aversion I can share a little from the skinny side. I don’t eat the garbage he eats, I eat healthy, I just struggle with getting enough calories in. I don’t count calories, but you’d be shocked to learn how much I can survive on and not be fully emaciated. When I have been emaciated that was surviving off sips of broth/juice. My body has acclimated to low calories so I don’t feel hunger the same as a healthy body. When I am eating pretty consistently I do feel more hunger and drive for food which would explain his turn around. Part of the problem is lifestyle habits. I don’t think about food or fit it into my daily routine so I often forget to eat or prioritize other things. Him eating simple easy things is him just trying to get something in his body, I assume. He may also feel nauseous when trying to eat, hence the bland. He had someone telling him when and what to eat. The real question is if he continued to eat consistently enough when he went home. I do not have an eating disorder. I have severe PTSD and this is a trauma response I struggle with. If people get mean I’m deleting this.
So glad you are addressing all the problematic-ness of this show, because it really wasn't not as helpful as I think it pretended/wanted to be. Thanks for the great content!
