The WORST IndyCar Race of All-time

In 2002 the CART Series was already on thin ice and trying to stay afloat as a series. Major teams like Team Penske already started to defect to the IRL series at the beginning of the year and IndyCar racing in North America was not in very good shape. The last thing CART needed was another disaster of a race, but that is exactly what happened at the 2002 Honda Indy 300 at Surfers Paradise in Australia. Although, not completely CART's fault.

Before I clicked on the video, I knew it was 2002 Surfers Paradise. But the worst IndyCar race of all time? The 1973 Indy 500 tops it. From Art Pollard's death in practice, to the first race start with Salt Walther and spectator injuries, to delays, to the deaths of Swede Savage and Armando Tehran. The series made drastic changes to the cars, and took safety far more seriously afterward

I think any race that involves death would be significantly worse. I'm looking at this from a purely entertainment and officiating factor. Sure the start was wild, but the rest of the race must of been agonizing to watch. Especially if you attended this race.

@@tompw3141 That thing should have been fixed months prior to this race by making rules that give some elasticity. Yellow lap at the start instead of having a huge red lap delays.

This is easily one of the most bizarre races I've ever watched in any series, on RU-vid (like this one) or live on tv. There was something strangely fascinating about watching race strategies playing out at 80mph rather than 180 though! Though perhaps my favourite strange race is the second race of the 2016 London ePrix, the final race of Formula E's second season. After title contenders Sébastien Buemi and Lucas di Grassi (who'd gone into the race level on points) collided on the opening lap there were two races going on: everyone else was racing as normal (and the event was dominated by Buemi's teammate Nicolas Prost), but Buemi and di Grassi swapped to their second cars (in the first four seasons of Formula E the drivers had to change to a second car mid-race as the batteries couldn't make the full race distance), which now had the wing angles cranked up to max, and spent the rest of the race venturing out on the track every now and then to try to set the fastest lap and take the two points that came with it, as whichever one got it would take the championship! Buemi got it in the end. The whole thing had to be seen to be believed, in all honesty.

I was at this race. Each year I would take my annual holidays to attend this round of the championship and I remember sitting in the grandstand at the start of the main straight at the 'Honda Hairpin'. It was so miserable. I had a poncho on but I was still saturated. It was pretty chilly for that time of year also so I was just shivering my way to the end of the race. If I recall correctly the winner did donuts just in front of us as he was so happy to win his first race, and it made attending the race somewhat worth it. The Gold Coast round of CART was a 4 day extravaganza, Thursday being the quietest day and the remaining 3 days having several different qualifying session and races of several different types of cars. The Australian V8s or supercars would also have rounds on this weekend and it was a great 4 day party. I met my wife at the 2005 round of the indycars and to see it slowly die was sad.

It was bad enough starting the race, but after no improvement on track conditions and nothing on radar showing it would get any better, there's no reason to continue past half way and screw over everyone else. Since I mentioned it, Demise. Any chance you'd look at New Hampshire 93, it's widely regarded as the best mile oval CART ever put on and it had some awesome battles, great mile racing and was a key race in the 93 championship. I do wish Indycar would go back to NH, Milwaukee and a lot of the tracks I grew up with, Nazareth, Milwaukee, NHMS are the three that leap out, thankfully quite a few are still around
@danielhenderson8316

Milwaukee is a maybe in the next couple of years. According to Racer, they're finishing up some upgrades at the track. Sadly, Nazareth is gone, and I don't know what's up with Loudon because the 93 race was 1 and done and then there was the Double Eagle 400 later on.
@jacekatalakis8316
@jacekatalakis8316 11 месяцев назад
@@danielhenderson8316 No no I'm refering to the CART races at Loudon from 92-95 and throw in 96 since technically it used old CART stuff, 1993 New England 200 was the best mile oval race CART ever, ever put on, once you got past the opening yellow. That battle between PT and Goodyear is absolutely awesome, how many people could pull ahead from a 90s Penske? Goodyear and Walker Racing could, and did for double digit laps, on a mile oval. In part that was down to the package at the time. Seems like, as with Australia, every year New Hampshire threw out something interesting 92: Inaugural race, Rahal won on his title winning season 93: Mansell schooled the field en route to Newman/Haas having a clean sweep of the miles 94: Scott Sharp flipped and Penske's absolute domination in that race, in that season... 95: Honda's first win, JV's last open wheel oval race in top level series and /that/ on board crash with Fernandez. Seemed for a few years Fernandez had at least one massive crash a year, Elkhart 94, New Hampshire 95, Milwaukee 93 was another one 96: The IRL happened with their bizarre split calendar year season 2011: Indycar screwed up. It's great Milwaukee is coming back. I wish it'd never stopped hosting Indycar honestly, it's one of those iconic, classic tracks that is part of the series history and deserves to be run more. I'd happily swap one of the Iowa dates for Milwaukee, personally. Hell I'd swap Texas for Michigan and another 500 miler, and a 200 miler at Milwaukee. Yes I'm a traditionalist. Gimme Milwaukee in the week after Indy, thankshga

Lots of F1 drivers were also at their homes watching and called the TV, such as Barrichello and Emerson Fittipaldi. Worst is subjective. Races where a driver dies is far worse than a trival rain affected race.
@arenasnow
@arenasnow 11 месяцев назад
I think I disagree with that. There were a lot of NASCAR Daytona races worse than the 2001 Daytona 500 and a lot of CART races worse than the race where Greg Moore died. And the Moore thing seemed entirely like a freak incident while there were injuries in this one caused by Dominguez's stupidity. The 1998 CART race at Michigan was definitely one of the most exciting ever even though that tire went into the stands. I'd definitely say Las Vegas 2011 was worse though especially because they decided to abandon the race afterward and I'd probably agree that the 1973 Indy 500 was.

Wait wait wait...if the race is shortened to 50 laps then halfway would be lap 25 not 35...right? Or do the rules state the initial halfway point?

Cristiano Da Matta would make his F1 debut with Toyota in 2003. He would then be dropped by Toyota halfway through the 2004 season, partly due to his performances but also because of his comments about the car being uncompetitive. He was replaced by Toyota test driver Ricardo Zonta for the rest of the season.

@Mhjeffrey027running
@Mhjeffrey027running 11 месяцев назад
In hindsight im sure the officials should have started the race under yellow, qs arguably the best conditions during the period of the "race" was during the clean up. As for Dominguez, who probably celebrated knowing that clinched Rookie of the Year (the only other contender Townsend Bell was sacked about 8 rounds earlier but was still leading prior to this round), at least he got another race win at Miami a year later where he could celebrate legitimately.

Things like that were the exact reason why cart went ...buh bye. Seems Nascart didn't learn anything from their example. There used to be years long waitlists to get into Nascart races. Now you can get free tickets if you buy an Icee and a candy bar from a gas station near the track. I stopped watching Nascart when they started doing all the gimmicky crap with the points and then that god awful playoff crap. That, and most of the teenage drivers that flooded Nascart were a bunch of whiny cry babies.
