First off, funny skit. Just so nobody leaves here thinking his is actually a valid criticism of 18th century armies though, imma rant a bit. Flags and regimental standards play a really important battlefield role in command and control in any 18th century army. For starters, when you've got 600-1000 guys attempting to maintain a half decent battlefield formation (you don't want guys getting too far in front getting hit by friendlies, or guys too far back hitting friendlies) having a big fucking flag saying "form the line here" helps a lot. Secondly, these battlefields often got smokey as all hell. Visibility often goes to shit after a few minutes because gun powder creates a ton of smoke, and there's a lot of dudes shooting. So for a general, the ability to figure out where his units actually are through all that shit is really important, and the ability to figure out which are which is also really helpful. These people don't have radios to report their position to command, so flags really are one of the best ways for a commander to have any idea what the fuck is going on when shit starts flying. As to the idea that a standard bearer needs a gun, two things to consider. 1: there are 600-1000 other guys with guns in his regiment. His one more firearm ain't tipping the firepower balance. 2. He's surrounded by some of the baddest motherfuckers in the regiment. The NCOs responsible for guarding the regimental colors are usually a bunch of pipe hitting veterans who know their business very well. This guy has a better bodyguard setup than most of the officers in his regiment. TLDR: flags are super useful, and the colors are incredibly well protected on the battlefield.

Well the standard bearer was really important in terms of units and armies since they helped keep the men in a unit together and knowing where the rest of their allies are. It also allows the commander to know where all of his units are on the field and make decisions. The drummer at the end was also really important as their tempo helped keep the men moving at the same speed and moving in formation. Both of these posts were vital for the victory of armies from the ancient world all the way to the late 19th century.

Yeah, up until the red coats arrived on lands previously uncharted by Europeans. Marching and drumming into battle like big loud doofs, making themselves big bright red targets for the natives to shoot arrows and poison darts at from the bushes. Then they had to re-assess that whole brilliant "look at me, here I am!" strategy. -And actually, that's how the Irish FINALY took back ROI, too. The Colonizers marching around like they own the place. Burning down houses. Ok, then. We'll hide in the bushes and ambush you to stop you coming in and killing us. G'wan, keep holding up the flag and announcing your presence.

Also flag bearers are very important from the battlefield, when during the battle, and soldiers scattered, when they see a flag, they will rally towards the flag bearer, immensly protecting the bearer and turning the battle in their favour.
@gengis737
@gengis737 2 года назад
Nothing of the sort. To take an enemy flag was direct path to promotion, so when a regiment scattered any ennemy, especially the horsemen, would go straight to the flag bearer to cut him down and get the trophy - provided there were not too many men rallied around the flag. Drummer, as unarmed men, were usually spared, all the more because being in the back line when fighting got real, they had plenty of time and space to escape.

The standard bearer would generally be a junior officer that had 'bought' their rank, the flag would be the regiments colours, which would include the cap badge of the regiment and its battle honours. The junior officer would be protected by expiernced sergeants, who were given the title of Colour Sergeant. They were responsible for the security of the officer and the standard.
@t2force212

"the flag would be the regiments colours, which would include the cap badge of the regiment and its battle honours." There's a downside to this - if a unit was trying to disengage from the enemy but the flag was in danger of being captured then drastic measures had to be taken to prevent that, even at the cost of having a lot more men captured or killed.

Thank you for bringing awareness to the important but often overlooked battle of Big George the Fourth, known for the complete destruction of Big George's forces, all dead, wounded or captured apart from the flagbearers and drummers, who somehow all survived. It's probably the 2nd most overlooked war to only the European No-Gun War of '63, where General Mills notably led his troops to success largely his Old Navy using flash-kicks.

As I was watching it, I was thinking that the style of orders have not changed over the centuries. I know plenty of corporate bosses who would treat their employees the same way. Give them an impossible task to do that will ruin their personal reputation but pretend it is for the benefit of their careers. And of course, if the employee fails, he will take the blame.

@davidwuhrer6704
@davidwuhrer6704 3 года назад
The standard bearer was just below officer, and it was an important position before rifles. A unit has to stick together, or they will be picked off one by one. The flag is what the unit rallies around so they can keep protecting each other even as the enemy breaks their ranks. So the standard bearer is protected by his unit, and doesn't have to do any of the actual murdering himself. (Contrary to war propaganda, it is much easier to die than to kill, which should be obvious if you look at what percentage of people die compared to how many are murderers.) And that made it a coveted position. Of course, rifles changed all that. Rifles are what defines modern warfare. Now there are no standard bearers anymore, no flags on the battlefield, and no officers charging into battle ahead of their men secure in the knowledge that no commoner can touch them.

I love the sarcasm of the "importance, of a standard Bearer..." but it becomes funnier (at least for me), when one realizes, that it was 100% an important position on the battlefield, and a highly honorable position as well, as it made it so much easier to command troops. Just order a regiment to stay with the standard, and all a commander would have to do is position the standard bearer, and all the other soldiers would follow. In essence, this gives the standard bearer more power on the battlefield, because if they wanted to, they can completely ignore the order to reposition, or reposition to an entirely different location than was ordered, and they can force an advance or a retreat as they see fit. However, the job does not come without risk, and it is by far, the absolute riskiest job you can be given. Those bright colors of the standard, gives your position away, making you an easy target on the battlefield, and if the standard falls, it can cause immense confusion amongst the troops that are to stay with the standard. As a result, Standard Bearers were paid more than a typical foot-soldier; accounting for the honor of bearing the standard, and the risk involved by doing so. This increase in pay, is also meant to ensure that a standard bearer would follow orders, rather than do their own thing.
