There have been many Jokers in Batman media over the years ---
but at the bottom of the barrel is none other than this.
The WORST Joker ever put to screen ----
Jared Leto is definitely going down in the history books but not for the reasons one would hope.

I think the big issue was the writing. There was no real story with him save his "relationship" with Harley Quinn. Leto is a solid enough actor that if he had better writing he might have made the character more interesting. It's also difficult standing in the shadows of Nicholson and Ledger.
@sparkleygrapes
@sparkleygrapes Год назад
Not only if he had better writing, but if he had a director to keep him in check. Leto really did try to do way too much. Leto is a great actor when he has a good director. Or maybe he's just a good actor in the right roles but can't play a comic book villain in the vein of Joker.

Of course it could have been better with decent writing, but I agree with the “try hard” statement in the video. He was trying waayyy too hard to make something great and edgy.. Ended up being goofy and intolerable. Straight up disrespectful to the character in my opinion.

@@kurtcocane personally I think that phrase is not right. No it was something like trying to start a diffrent ordeal on the character. Which there is plenty for lots of characters. Batman, the dark knight/Vigilante/Detective etc… like a diffrent take which is all of Synder. I feel that most people are too standard on Heath legard take. Something like Jared was diffrent. From what we got, yes it is also goofy but I wouldn’t say a “try hard”. This joker could be a leading up joker. Especially with our first adaptation of joker w/ harly, all to make more sense.

The second I saw this film I lost all interest in everything Batman related in the DCEU. THIS is the Joker Batman has been having trouble with for the past couple of decades!!! Even Birds of Prey pretended that this version never happened and showcased a more comic rendition of the character. I don't hate his look you know remove the awful face tattoos and Chrome Teeth and we may have something that looks inspired by the Joker from The Dark Knight Returns. But his personality was not it and kind of turned me off the DCEU for a good while. Edit: Liked some of his outfits, mostly the suits those looks pretty good.
@randallflagg3700

The *Birds of Prey* movie didn't pretend that this version never happened; they went as far as getting a Jared Leto body double (played by Johnny Goth) for the scene where he and Harley tattoo the face of "Happy", one of the goons who executed the Bertinelli crime family. And Johnny Goth had the exact same look/haircut/type of clothes at Leto's Joker, and he even had the "J" tattoo under his eye and the star next to his other eye...

A personal head canon i had was that this was a Second Joker created by Harley. The original one died but her brain was so fried that she turned a poor chump in to another Joker based on her interpretations and overwrote her memories to make it seem like the original one never died from her perspective. Thats why in the first suicide squad movie the joker was continuously dead set on saving her while in the flashbacks he often abandoned her.

I have this theory… after seeing all the films that HarleyQuinn is in, I I think I figured out why we got this version. And it also involves a certain video game. This Joker, this is what Harley sees and we are seeing what Harley sees. Suicide Squad is going on through her head with the bright colors and visuals. We get more less in Birds of Prey, and a small snippet during her javelin escape in The Suicide Squad. And also we got it in Injustice 2. In the first Injustice we see and Harley and a more traditional Joker side by side in the game. Once we get to Injustice 2 she is sprayed by Scarecrow and we see her hallucinating and she sees Joker but this one looks somewhat younger, more ripped, and has a similar coat to Suicide Squad joker. So this how she sees him, we are seeing him through her eyes.

All ima say is Jared Leto's Joker was a modern day take on the Golden Age Joker, who was a gangster and crime lord first and foremost. Not the twisted Silver age prankster like Romero or the homicidal Bronze age maniac obsessed with Batman like Heath Ledger. His design and actions makes sense as it shows his penchant for flashiness and need/desire for money. He rocks gold chains, replaced the teeth Batman knocked out with flashy grills, drives a purple sports car and has a massive arsenal as well as a loyal gang. The fact that people are still dunking on this version just shows how they dont fully understand the history of the character. And the cherry on top most of scenes were cut from the movie, despite him being one of the key marketing pieces for the film and many people were eager to see this Joker before the movie released with him not having much screen time and playing backseat to Enchantress as the main villain. It wasnt until after the movie did people shit on him. The over exposure of the Bronze Age Joker has caused people to see the other versions of him as not ideal and I believe Heath's death amplified this because lets be honest, when someone dies people tend to become dogmatic or teritorial over that persons accomplishments and wont let anyone compete or measure up to them. Ledger's Joker was phenominal but it was a honed in version of the homicidal maniac. Leto's Joker was fun take and i still love the design also he looked good in many shots that were ripped straight from the comics. But hey go ahead and get them easy views i guess.

This Marilyn Manson Joker could’ve been interesting if they revealed him to be Robin as a nod to Batman Beyond Return of the Joker … it makes sense because this feels like a childish edgy teen portrayal by a man who never grew up and let go of his demons. And perhaps he is responsible for the death of the Real Joker who turned him into this monstrosity. By killing the OG Joker he killed Robin. And just as the audience cringes when he appears, so too does Batman experience pain and remorse at the sight of this edgelord. Batman perhaps blames himself for the monstrosity he allowed Robin to become … then all the weird stylistic choices and mannerisms of Leto Joker could’ve been justified in a story sense. Still painful to watch, but we would realize the character is putting on an act as a tryhard version of a Joker he can never truly replicate. A grown child in clown makeup who refuses to let go of his past, and Batman lets him continue to live on out of pity. There Leto Joker fixed.

Honestly, when I heard he was cast both me and my friend were excited because we saw films where he had a lot of positive opinions and he was also awarded for one of the movies. Once I saw the movie well… his performance was annoying which I put the blame to the actor, his lines and design is something I hold against the producers and designers. When he showed up in Snyder’s JL I still thought he was annoying but what redeems him was the dialogue with Batman, his design was meh but the lines given to Leto and Affleck were pretty good. I think that everything could’ve been different if there was an explanation of why the braces (Batman smashing his teeth) and his tattoos are meant to cover the scars of all the physical damage done by Batman when he snapped by killing Jason Todd (or Dick Grayson) and maybe some flashbacks of his original look approaching to the original source would’ve made the situation better. He had all the materials and with the right people, it would’ve been interesting. And I agree with you. With all the versions of the joker this one is the worst one. Not only because of his annoying way to perform but also painful to watch how DC accepted this even though they had all sorts of materials to create their own version but not as messed up as this

I couldn't help but think about this Joker a lot when it came out. Simply because there's nothing really there's nothing to know about him. This is kind of what happens when you don't know how to write something and leave a bit of mystery, and instead end up writing an unsolvable riddle. What I thought was a waste of time, was not having the movie based in Gotham and not having a Harley Quinn Deadshot relationship. But Joker in this movie, I just remember having this idea of his first scene being a love song playing, as the camera zooms in on a random building in Gotham. Then through a rain window, the camera comes in on three girls tied to chairs, with Harley makeup and different Harley costumes. all of them bound and gagged and crying. I was thinking the song should be Show and Tell by Al Wilson. We don't see Joker until, the camera pans around the three girls showing each of their faces, so the audience feels uncomfortable and realizes the situation letting them feel what it's like to be on the receiving end of Joker's sadistic side for once. When we see Joker we see his obsession then with Harley when she's not here, inferring pretty heavily to their abusive sadomasochistic type relationship. But for Joker Kakihara like Ichi The Killer, she's the only two who gives him pleasure. This was the only way I could think of making this Joker immediately stand apart, I don't think he's heartbroken but maybe a little lovesick as Harley is the only one who calms him down, makes him feel better, and staves off his depression. Showing their very unhealthy relationship and that unable to find her Joker is essentially trying to but failing to find someone who makes him feel this way. More importantly, this would give the line "Would you live for me" so much more meeting. Has Harley been so broken by him and fallen so hard, she's willing to live and let him torture her, and this twisted love of her willing to receive to prove her love to him and his need to torture her to prove his for her is then made clear. Now we've got a terrible insight into their relationship and what these girls were going through until White then interrupts telling him they've found her. He then tells Joker we found her and for the first time Joker smiles and we see genuine excitement and joy. I don't know what's more frightening next Joker letting them go probably as then we have to imagine were they hookers, mob girlfriends, or just randoms he picked up. Showing the Joker's and Harley's mutual obsession and his need for her.

I think that you summed up the problem with Jared Leto's portrayal the best when you said that we did not receive the Joker here. We received Harley Quinn's terrible ex-boyfriend. It was a deranged, inconsistent, wretched portrayal of a character that has been, admittedly? Done to death in the last 20 years. I love the Joker, but even I would say that the character has been over-interpreted of late in portrayal after portrayal, and in some ways Leto's portrayal showed us just how much the concept has been overdone, to the point where we received a creation that was memorable, truly, only for how not memorable it was. Even Brett's, while pretty damned awful (I blame the writing there, frankly.), still managed to encapsulate some of the concept of the character. The only thing truly similar to the original character is the fact that his hair was green and his skin was pasty pale, distantly matching several versions of the otherwise iconic character. This was less a new interpretation so much as it was a pair of men's attempt to completely re-invision a concept that has been done over and over again, and who has only ever truly seen a few novel interpretations that drastically alter the most basic nature of the character. Once we are past Cesar Romero's admittedly kind of goofy take on the clown prince of crime, into more modern interpretations, almost all of them take a heavy page from either Jack Nicholson or Mark Hammil in how they address the character. Since 1989/1992 we had two fundamental takes on the character that stood the test of time for approaching 20 years, and only Heath Ledger really ever altered the format... but much to the chagrin of that phenomenal performance, it caused people to try to duplicate what he had done, to envision new versions of his "raw chaos" as he portrayed them... and at the end of the day? Y'all ain't Heath. That Joker was his Joker, and it is best to accept that it was very much a singular, one-time adaptation of the character that will never be truly duplicated, and the tragedy of Heath's death means that we never saw the full climax that might have come in the third film with him as a headliner instead of Bane. That fire will not be captured again. New fire may one day be found, but it is fair to simply place that on its pedestal and not return to it. Mark's Joker was adaptable to others' portrayal and style. I'd argue he did it best, but he created a model that other artists could draw from and attempt to duplicate, shifting small pieces to match their own style. Jack's portrayal is harder to adapt (because his energy can be ... very difficult to truly embody on the screen, and few match it in the same frenetic, borderline manic way he does sometimes.), but it can still serve as a model for how the Joker can be both ruthless and maddeningly impossible to predict in his violent tendencies, not to mention his obsession with the Batman. They're models that are easier to embody. Something about Heath's interp has simply been impossible to truly encapsulate since then, and I think much of that is that unique combination of actor, director, screen writer, ambience, co-stars and plainly? Timing. The joke's been told. Retelling it falls flat. Jared Leto tried to do what Heath Ledger once did, and demonstrated unequivocably how impossible it can be to truly duplicate singular performances. Like Icarus, he tried to fly too high, and instead crashed to the earth. I have seen good jokers. I have seen bad. I have never seen a more memorably unmemorable joker than Jared Leto's failure.

Jared Leto’s Joker had potential. The whole DCEU did, but it was never reached or seen and honestly never would have been. Because The WB wanted everything yesterday, and Snyder, despite his version of JL being the better one, is a clueless hack when it comes to these characters. A Batman that outright tortures people and cares for only himself, a Superman who was already heroic without Lois but can’t function without her, a Lois that apparently cheats on her fiancé, and a Joker that just isn’t really the Joker. It’s just bad.

I'm still hoping for the Ayer cut to be released some day, mostly because I want to see Jared Leto's Joker without all the awful cuts from the final version the movie... (he was much better in the Snyder cut appearance-wise, personally I love tattoos, and I wouldn't mind Leto's version keeping the ones he has on his torso/arms/hands, but the neck&face tats just did NOT look good, IMO) Plus it's not like the Snyder cut that needed some reshoots, some CGI, required some new scenes to be filmed, etc etc The SS Ayer cut is already a finished film that several fans have already watched. And it's not like the *Batgirl* movie for which they would have to pay a lot of money to release it, (unless they do it for free IIRC?) DC could release the Ayer cut on their streaming platform without having to pay anything extra, or at least I think so? My best hope is that when the next time James Gunn makes a 3rd Suicide Squad movie, the Ayer cut of the first installment of the trilogy will be released for free between the announcement of the new film, and its release in theaters. As a publicity stunt, if you will. It would be a nice way to get people hyped for the franchise again, especially if some characters from the first movie come back for that potential 3rd movie; Harley Quinn is an obvious one, and since El Diablo survives in the Ayer cut, then maybe have him around? That would be a good excuse to release it and making it canon, actually. "We _really_ wanted to use Chato Santana in this one, because context (maybe the mission has something to do with ice or fire, like they have to take out Killer Frost, or Icicle, or Captain Cold or Mr Freeze or... well Task Force X often clashes with heroes, so having El Diablo take on Ice [Tora Olafsdotter] at some point) "

I don't remember my source, but I do remember hearing a reasoning for the grills and Damaged written on his forehead. The DCEU repeatedly hinting at the death of Jason Todd. Robin's suit in BVS with "HAHAHA" written on it, the Robin tattoo with an arrow in it on the Joker, and a quick moment in Birds of Prey where it said Harley assisted in the death of Robin. After killing Robin, Batman lost control and relentlessly best the Joker. Knocking out all of his teeth. Hence, the grills. The Damaged tattoo was not a reference to his mental state. But a permanent reminder and taunt to Batman for what he did to him. That the Joker won. Pushing Batman to lose control. The death of Jason also being the reason why Batman is more violent and have less regard for anyone he hurts in BVS. Which makes me wonder why this storyline happened off-screen? I would have loved to see this storyline either instead of or after BVS before we got Suicide Squad

I think a major issue is how undercooked the character is. It's like the filmmakers said, "as long as we get another famous method actor and market the character around the promise of another genre-defining performance, writing and direction don't matter!" Yeah. It does. Because even though Heath Ledger turned in a legendary performance and deserves the legacy he has earned, the success of his Joker is due in equal measure to the strength of the material surrounding him. That is what enabled Heath to give us what he gave us. His Joker isn't just a great villain because of the actor behind the makeup. He's also a great villain because the story makes him a legitimate, terrifying threat.

Y’know, David Ayer was on record as saying that with all the material left on the cutting room floor, Jared Leto’s Joker would’ve been right up there with Heath and Jack. Snyderverse fans got on that a little by either repeating it or saying the portrayal was “”redeemed”” in Zack Snyder’s Justice League… But no. No this version of the character was doomed to fail the second they showed his damaged little face in front of us. This version of Joker will forever remain my least favorite Joker, animated or live action, for the simple reason that it never came close to understanding who Joker is. It’s not bad enough that the design is the worst we had ever seen, but Jared Leto’s performance just completely destroys whatever hope it could’ve had. There’s no real energy behind it, no attempt to match either the comics or animated series let alone the past live action performances… it just sucked. Everyone involved in that portrayal of Joker just needs to accept that.
