The worst MLB Opening Day game was historically lopsided in the saddest way imaginable

Baseball fans slog through the dead of winter because there is a singular light at the end of the tunnel -- the dawn of a new MLB season. Well in 2016, the Dodgers travelled to San Diego for an Opening Day game that packed 162 games worth of disappointment into one miserable evening from hell.

April 1, 1996. Cincinnati vs Montreal. Seven pitches into the game, Home Plate Umpire, John McSherry called time, walked toward the Reds' dugout, collapsed and died. That's the worst opening day game.

Was waiting for someone to mention it. We convinced work to turn on the game, and tuned in just after McSherry collapsed. Very eerie to hear all the silence, and then the cutaway back to WLW for the news.

Alex Johnson Honestly though, the thing the league and the idiots at ESPN and MLBN who talk about “pace of play” don’t realize is that what’s killing the game is the new mentality of launch angles all over the place to the point where everyone’s popping out all the time and guys refusing to go the other way and thus having a .200 avg because “if you hit a homer, the shift doesn’t matter”, yet they hit right into the shift all the time in big spots. I remember growing up watching baseball just a decade ago when everyone was playing small ball and focusing on the fundamentals. I like statcast and analytics and what they teach us, but I also think that there’s a time for that stuff and a time to return to the basics and in today’s game it seems that everyone’s too focused on what’s new.

Yankee With No Brim A lineup of Bonds’s would be great, it means every at bat is well fought out and guys who hit for a good average, walk a ton and don’t strike out. FBI When signing contracts in sports, depending on the contract, you can have an opt out clause, meaning that after a certain amount of years, you can get out of the contract you signed initially, and either negotiate a new one with the same team, or go to completely new team. There are player options when the player can decide whether or not they want to opt out, or team options where the team decides whether or not they keep you.

This may be the worst opening day in MLB. We just got to see the worst Thursday night football in NFL history. Chief vs Broncos ending in 30-6, Chiefs racking up 9 sacks and 30 un answered points, Broncos with 205 total yards and 1-13 on 3rd down attempts.

I remember watching this one live. Got to agree that's worse than a 15-0 blowout.

Suggestion: Do a deep rewind of the either the 2007 PDC World Championship (van Barneveld over Taylor) or the 2018 PDC World Championship (Cross over Taylor)

The worst opening day game was Riverfront, where the umpire had a heart attack and died. Can there be any worse?

Not everyone from San Diego is a surfer. Some of us are diehard sports fans. Hard enough rooting for my LA chargers now, than to be reminded that our last major league team is the Cleveland Browns of baseball.

This could be "The Worst" or "Rewinder" but I'd love to see a video on that 6-6 tie between the Seahawks and Cardinals where both kickers missed "chip shot" field goals in OT if you don't already have one.

"The excitement of a single longball." After the steroid era, no thank you. I'm still sick of home runs, and even before then I always hated so-called "highlight reels" composed of nothing happening but balls going on parabolic trajectories through the air and batters trotting around the bases with no jeopardy involved. But scoring from second base on a single, or from first base on a double - now that's exciting baseball.

Home Runs are more exciting cause you flip the entire narrative of a game with 1 swing. If your team is down 1-3 a three run homer gives you the lead in one play. An RBI in the gap means you are still down 2-3 exciting yes but not sufficient.

I was in attendance for this game. I disagree. This game was freaking great! Oh yeah. Forgot to mention that I'm a Dodger fan. Was in an outfield section made up entirely of Dodger fans.

I'm gonna say that the year the homeplate umpire fell over dead on opening day in Cincy was slightly worse... This game has no (known) fatalities associated with it at least. lol.

The 1-0 14 inning game between Phillies and Mets actually sounds very exciting to watch. Gotta love a good pitchers duel and I bet at least Indians fans enjoyed Bob Feller's opening day no hitter.

I’d have to say the worst Opening Day was in Cincinnati, in 1996, when umpire John McSherry, the crew chief working the plate that day, collapsed and died on the field just moments before the first pitch. Believe it or not, the Reds owner wanted to play the game, but players from both teams refused to play, which was the right decision.
