There’s a movie club at my university that shows free movies every weekend and they actually have a contract with Tommy Wiseau to show The Room once every year. This movie in a theater setting is comedic gold. Two guys always get up to throw a football whenever the characters do. There’s a ton of yelling (HI DENNYYYYY whenever he appears) and people throw spoons. It’s a great time 😂

Fun/horrifying fact: The whole crew felt the need to ask Lisa's actress like 20 times whether she was comfortable with the sex scenes and offering to back her up if she wanted to refuse them. Apparently Tommy treated her horribly. Aside from how uncomfortable it is in general to perform so many drawn-out, actually-nude sex scenes with a strange man in your first role, he also insulted her body a lot.

Fun story about the cgi roof: Tommy Wisseau had access to an actual roof top, but insisted on having it be green screened. For some inexplicable reason. (Also, I highly recommend reading "The Disaster Artist" if you want to find out the absolute chaos that was the movie production)

The reason Johnny laughs and says 'What a story, Mark!' in response to a story about a woman beaten up so badly that she ends up in the hospital, is simply: Tommy Wiseau felt that was an appropriate reaction. No one else on set did, they tried to talk him out of it, they told him it wasn't a funny story, so he probably shouldn't laugh, they attempted to coach him into giving a different reaction, but, no, that was the reaction Wiseau felt was most suited to that story. Dude's weird.

My guess is that Johnny is supposed to find it funny because he thinks no woman would cheat that much, a dozen guys sounds like an urban legend or a Florida Man story to him, to reinforce the message of the scene, which is that Johnny has no concern at all that Lisa would ever cheat on him, and he truly suspects nothing even when Mark drops hints to see how he will react. Tommy wouldn't be able to explain that intention when discussing it, or understand how it was being perceived, because of the same context processing and communication challenges that lead him to write such lines in the first place.

The book "The Disaster Artist" written by Greg "Oh Hai Mark" Sestero answers a LOT of these questions, and I absolutely love it for that. It's well-written, it's an interesting look at a young man's life in LA in the late 90s and early 2000s, and it answers SO MANY QUESTIONS about The Room and about Tommy Wiseau. As a fellow fan of bad movies who saw this...THING over a decade ago, I'm honestly delighted that people are still watching this movie, still finding things to like and dislike, still having favorite strange moments that other people haven't highlighted. It's truly magical, in that way that people still watching "old classics" and getting a lot out of them is magical.

I have seen this movie at least 8 times and I don't know why, but my favorite moment is when Johnny smashes the living room and one of the frames falls and is clearly holding against the camera. You can actually see it at 22:15.

I have seen this movie four times because every year in college our friend group would go see in at the local theater. You got a plastic spoon with your ticket to throw when the random picture of a spoon in the apartment is on screen. There was always at least one pair of dudes who would throw a football when the characters did. And a few others who would get up and jog up and down the theater aisle during the jogging scene. And there were various things people would yell, including counting the number of times Mark says he’s Johnny’s best friend, and yelling “who are you??” at the random dude (he’s supposed to be Peter but they never acknowledge that he’s been recast). It’s a great time.

This just occurred to me: why is the movie titled The Room? Nothing about the plot is about a particular room, there's nothing about the characters (their traits, background, etc) that alludes to the importance of a room, so why give the movie that name? The movie Panic Room has a panic room as a focal point/central location of the movie; Room is about a mother and child who are held hostage in someone's shed or whatever, and that room is their whole world; A Quiet Place is about a family living in some post-apocalyptic world where you have to keep all sounds to a minimum, you have to stay quiet; Bohemian Rhapsody is a biopic about Freddie Mercury, whose most popular work (imo) with his band is called Bohemian Rhapsody... do you see my point here? SOMEONE PLS EXPLAIN!

The thing about the room is that its based on a real relationship Johnny had and this is how it played out in his mind. You don't get to see the relationship from his ex girlfriends perspective and so you can only see it from Johnny's. And the reason that it's interesting and funny in a way is because in Johnny's mind his girlfriend started hating him for no reason whatsoever and she only cheated on him because she's a psycho and there was no other reason, Johnny was the perfect boyfriend and he didn't do anything wrong. I would love to see this play out from his ex girlfriends perspective just to see how much Johnny omitted from the conversation.

Greg says The Room was about Tommy fearing betrayal by Greg during their friendship, not about a past romantic relationship. Lisa is just a plot device to allow Greg, as Mark, to betray Johnny. At one point Tommy believed Greg was driving him away on a road trip to murder him, and he also became jealous when Greg had girlfriends, afraid of becoming even lonelier if Greg moved out. Greg was his only close friend and he almost lost him due to the same paranoia and neediness - Borderline PD if I had to guess - that The Room's script and tagline radiate.

So, the nameless guy who catches Mark and Lisa at the party is actually supposed to be Peter, but the actor quit before he got to act out that scene, so Tommy just replaced him with some rando. Also, I highly recommend to anyone seeing this comment, to read The Disaster Artist by Greg Sestero. Greg is the guy playing Mark and The Disaster Artist is a retelling of how The Room was made. It's actually three stories in one: One story is about how The Room was made, another is about Greg and Tommy's friendship and the last one is about Tommy's mysterious past. If you can, I recommend the audiobook. Greg narrates the book and he does the most amazing Tommy impression I've ever heard. The book is hilarious, terrifying and incredibly sad. You really get a good look into what kind of person Tommy is, and you also get a good sense of who Greg is. Their friendship is scary, funny, heartwarming and dysfunctional to all hell. It's a very well written book. I know there was a movie with James Franco some years ago that was based on the book. I hate the movie. I think it's absolutely shite and I hate the way they portray Greg, even though I know they were practically forced to make him a moron to appease Tommy - no I'm not joking. Tommy had a hard time forgiving Greg for how he portrayed him in the book so he wanted the movie version to act like a twat. Lol

The dubbing is bc his accent was too thick, no one could understand him so they had him dub over it and the reason why it's a bad dub is because hes Tommy.
