People were told not to head into the Sierras during this Monster storm..why do people insist
@johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 6 месяцев назад
Well, to be fair, we're very dependent on regular trucking but yes many drivers had the option of avoiding driving altogether and should've done so if they could but you really can't blame those who had limited options. I'm just glad that the video isn't reporting casualties.

A single snow storm would likely be inconsequential. What's needed is to build up a multi-year snowpack on the mountain tops but of course, every little bit helps...
@kcjazzcat7822
@kcjazzcat7822 6 месяцев назад
If I understand the conversion, every 10 inches of snow equals one inch of rain. If the area got 4 foot, that's 4.8 inches of rain. That is a bunch. I hope this water helps Lake Mead. I believe the main Cal resevoirs have recovered from low levels.
@johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 6 месяцев назад
@@kcjazzcat7822 Still, the consistent release from the snowpack is what's needed not sudden influxes. There's a reason why freshwater is still a problem in countries with monsoon seasons. It's when the fresh water is available that matters. Even lakes and reservoirs are just features that help us slow down the distribution of the water so that we could hope to use it. Running a tap into a bucket is vastly different from running a tap into the drain...
@beandoggle

@@johnwang9914 The Sierra Nevada doesn't have a whole lot of permanent snowfields so it's necessary to get snow each year to fill reservoirs and recharge underground aquifers. This storm was about 2 months of average winter precip in 4 days so reasonably consequential!

Pray for all those in snow banks right now that nobody knows they're there. If they can't dig themselves out, then they'll perish. It's not a joke. @johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 6 месяцев назад
You're supposed to step out and clear the snow around your car every fifteen minutes to half an hour during a snowstorm, otherwise if you have a gasoline or diesel engine, you'd die of carbon monoxide poisoning once the air intakes and exhausts gets blocked. If people are buried in their cars, they probably killed themselves by idling the engine just for the heat, if they've been digging themselves out periodically as they should, they shouldn't be buried, at least not by as much...

After living in the mountains, I realized how cold amd cruel the people are who live there. Have some humanity. Not everyone can see what's coming, nor understand how truly perilous life in the cruel mountains can be. It's better to pray for the ones who may be victims of their own naivety. I didn't know how cold and brutal -40 could be until I experienced it. If there weren't some good and kind people where I was, I'd of perished my first year in the mountains. Find your humanity guys. People can fall victim to the elements anywhere. Along coastlines there's floods and tsunamis, there's wildfires in the midwest and anywhere practically possible. Tornadoes and hurricanes. We need more humane, moral and ethical responses here folks. Being naive is a part of life. I avoid the ocean because I KNOW everything in it wants to eat me. Have a heart ya'll. People are trapped right now and dying. They need heroes, not zeroes.
@johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 6 месяцев назад
@@McGussen Disasters brings out the best and worst of people. I don't see people being excessively cruel in their posts, it's just that the weather was forecasted, everyone except the commercial truckers had the option of avoiding the weather completely and there are preparations that you should make and procedures to take during such adverse conditions. If anything, discussing the expected preparations and procedures on a public forum is a kindness to those who may not know them. If we're unfortunate enough to be in these situations, we would all still try to help each other through the disaster. It's quite common for stranded travellers to group up so they could reduce the digging needed and conserve the fuel for heating. People will help each other in these situations.

It usually doesn't take long once the snow stops falling no matter how bad it looks. Never underestimate our ability to deal with disasters. Still, it's advisable to keep your vehicles topped up, especially EV's. EV's can actually last longer as they have heat pumps which can be 500% efficient though they only operate above certain temperatures and can heat directly instead of counting on waste heat from idling the engines but they do have to also heat the battery pack and first responders can't just dump a gallon of fuel in to keep everyone going.

That "little" gas generator is going to take more fuel than is practical to carry in order to charge the EV.

How does a region recover from something like that using "green" energy? We need to be asking these questions as events like this become more common...

It's really not even important. What's important is that it gets done. What a stupid term "green energy". Do you mean not using gas, diesel powered equipment?

Just not sure why CHP didn't close 50 and 80 earlier. They would have saved all first responders grief from idiot Sac and SF drivers as well as idiot trucking companies. What was the point?
@mister_dave1184

Well, you can't shut down a major interstate for something that might happen, especially a snow storm that is usually handled. At what point do you hold the travelers responsible for their decisions.

You think they just get rid of all their snow removal equipment at the end of every winter and re-buy it all the next winter when snow is in the forecast? Its northern California in the MOUNTAINS, not southern california in the desert in San Diego.
