@ryans413 That's why you have to own your own property bro. Easier said than done right? That sucks man. You should see my book library. I have over a thousand books. It's a bitch for me to move. I have a lot of physical movies & collectibles too. I've had a lot of chaos with living arrangements so I can relate. Good luck finding a place.

VHS did take up a lot of space, DVD less so and blurays (4K) not so bad. I agree they do take up a little too much space. Books are a lot worse though. Builders should make home specifically for physical media collectors, I mean who needs an ensuite etc (that are always mentioned in house hunt programmes), rooms specially designed to store blu-rays etc should be built. I would be happy if an old library or something came on the market, no need to convert it.

Glad I’ve ran up on your channel! Great episode here. Thnx for sharing the journey. I’m the same age as you..I remember taping things off the tv with blank VHS tapes. Like you, that was gifts I’d get because I could record things I wanted back in the 80s 🤣 i’ll be following what you’ll be doing in your move. I know it’s got to be frustrating. Hopefully you’ll be checking in and sharing stories about life.

We never stopped buying Blu-ray, DVD and 4K's. DVD's are upscaled on most players and there's no issue with picture quality. We have literally two-thousand+ movies and series' in our collection, with discs in 16 ring binders, plastic cases binned, and the collection managed on a simple spreadsheet. Takes up no space at all. Most of our movies are not on any streaming service as have been the best movies and series we have ever watched. We hate liberalism and wokery - the definition of streaming sites - and haven't streamed anything for countless years.

I only collect to watch at some point. My more premium and favourite blurays stay in their cases. But all dvds and other blurays go into sleeves which you can fit the disc and the cover into. Living in a small house with a wife who doesn't share my passion for physical media, it allows me to collect so much more!
@anarchisttutor7423

I keep my blurays in cases and I use my DVD slipcovers as "file folders"; I put them together in boxes like filing cabinet drawers for those movies I don't keep on the shelves, which are reserved for movies I think visitors are more likely to want to borrow or take as a gift or choose for a movie party. It's working so far. I have about 450 movies and probably won't buy that many more.

I sympathise mate, i had the `pleasure` of moving a few months back. I received 4 days notice (this is a UK flat/apartment swap and offers on my housing only last a short time) but i HAD to do it as i am a single parent and the new place has a proper garden and was much bigger all round. I also had the utter `pleasure` of doing 95% of the move all by myself as my parents are getting on in years (bit like me really as i turn 50 in May! Massive GULP and a single tear rolls down my cheek!) so i only got help if i absolutely couldn`t physically do it myself as my brother, my superb and very generous assistant had VERY badly injured himself due to a major COVID vaccine reaction (the poor guy ended up having fits one of which made him fall down the stairs, breaking ribs but also dislocating AND breaking his shoulder and fracturing his hip with the violent fits/seizures!) So i was kinda stuck as i most certainly didn`t want to be responsible for anyone hurting themselves moving me! So i have moved myself 3 times thus far but have also moved friends and relatives. It stresses me out massively but can be controlled by organisation beforehand making sure everything is packed and marked up properly so you what contains what without having to slash it open. I lived on the 3rd floor with no lift and a tight staircase. I found the best way to move DVDs, CDs, video games, books and clothes was in the surprisingly strong reusable shopping bags you buy in our supermarkets (this is in the UK but i woulda thought you guys had the same? These bags are crazy strong as i could fill them up with paperbacks n hardbacks and literally fill the bag to the top (bags being approx 16" long/wide, 15" tall, 8" deep are used for grocery shopping instead of plastic bags that get used once and then thrown in the trash) with the bag taking the substantial weight easily (i`d guess at least 20kg/22lb?) These bags were good as you could walk holding one or two in each hand and be fine going down stairs and through awkward doorways etc. These bags were also the perfect fit for carrying DVDs n video games (they were also a HUGE amount lighter than books, paper is £$%&ing HEAVY haha!) Then these bags can very easily be stacked inside your car with me using a Ford Focus hatchback which, to you guys over there would be a £$%&in teeny tiny little car haha! But i could put LOADS of these bags in the boot/trunk with the seats folded down for extra space and even sit them on the front passenger seat. I didn`t hire a removal team or even a removal truck as i have to be careful with my money being a single parent and all. Just a little hopefully helpful little tip mate!

I feel for you with all the moves and having to move back in with the folks for a while. Back in 2000, I had a work accident that proved to be a permanent disability. Unfortunately, the place I had at the time was an upper stack (which means the living room, kitchen and dining room are on the second floor and the bedrooms and bathroom are on the third floor. Luckily my parents had a ranch style house so I had to move back with them for a few months waiting for a ground floor apartment to become available. But because I was in a wheelchair at the time, I had to rely on family and friends to do everything. Nothing beats one’s self worth more than watching everyone move your stuff, while you, a grown ass adult, sit by and direct where to place boxes based on what someone else labeled the box as. This resulted in a hunt as the labeling wasn’t the greatest. And because of my physical limitations, it meant I lived out of cardboard boxes for months until I had recovered well enough that I could move or push boxes and things around. The worst part was trying to put my physical media collection back together as my DVDs/books, etc. ended up being thrown wherever they fit. I hope I never have to go through this again. I was also lucky enough that the move was within the same complex I moved into back in ‘96. The next move I plan is when I’m carried out on a stretcher. Good luck with your upcoming move and hunt!

Space. I have upwards of 3000 blu rays at least, and ran into the same issue. I’m a Plex guy and have all of my films on my hard drive NAS. I decided to just bite the bullet and buy aluminum blu ray disc storage cases that hold upwards of 800-1000 discs and put the sleeve, inserts, and discs in Discsox high def blu ray sleeves and just boxed up the blu rays cases. The only issue there is the Discsox sleeves are cheap, but if you truly love the hobby it is what it is. Now I have condensed all my blu rays in close to 3 large aluminum storage case boxes with all my movies, stacked up on each other. Now I’m kinda glad I did it. Some people don’t like that, but Plexing and streaming my flicks is more important to me in this stage than displaying the collection. The only ones on display now are boxed sets and collectors editions of my favorite titles.

I never fell for streaming services. I have over 6,500 movies, over 1,600 TV series. I don't get the lure of physical media. If you have a decent collection, you need to devote a room to it, there is dusting, inventorying, etc. If you ever have a fire, flood, etc., you are screwed. If you are comfy in bed, you have to get up eject what you are watching, go into whatever room has your media, find what you want to watch, put the old one back, return to your room, put the new one in and crawl back into bed. Nope, not me, I can switch between any movie, TV series, music track, gaming console emulator or even RU-vid without leaving my comfy bed. I backup my media server onto 2.5" external drives. I can literally hold my collection in the palm of my hands. I am sorry, I don't see any benefits to physical media or streaming, only negatives compared to media on hard drives.

@@kai-lele3328 I don't think any single individual pirate has been charged in forever, unless they try and profit off the stuff they download. We've known forever record labels have been screwing their artists, so we aren't really impacting them, contrary to popular belief. I mean how bad is piracy hurting Taylor Swift? Just recently it was revealed during the actor and writer strikes how badly the actors and writers were being screwed by the industry and specifically the streaming sites. I still have a tier 1 cable package, I just choose to download rather than watch broadcast, so I am technically paying for the TV shows I watch. Over the decades I have sunk 10 of thousands of dollars into the movie industry, so I paid my dues more so than the average bear. I sleep well at night.

If you need to downsize, i think the only realistic option would be to get a Bluray/DVD ripper and start making digital copies. It'll be tedious, and expensive, and you'll want to look into how to make a NAS with redundant backups, but it's the only real option that would permanently give you more physical space. Or if it's only a temporary downsize, then maybe look into renting storage.
