Physical media is dead, right? You see it talked about all the time, especially on RU-vid. But is it really "dead"? I offer my (hot) take on it.

They used to say print is dead back in the 80’s and yet in 2023 book stores are still thriving!

*Good thing I have amassed a huge collection of physical media over the years. Not kidding I have a spare room almost filled wall to wall with DVD's & Blu Rays. I keep my main collection in my bed room, 2 walls filled with Steelbooks, 3 shelving units packs with 100's of my favourite DVD's & Blu Rays. I will NEVER give up on physical media due to the simple fact we never know what's going to become of Streaming, I cancelled my Netflix years ago when they released Cuties. Can't abide a company that makes movies targeted towards predators.*

The only reason we resorted to streaming services more in the first place is because of the lockdown period of the pandemic at the time prevented us from going outside due to it being a risk.

I am optimistic that physical disks will stick around for a long time to come. It seems to me there’s virtually no downside to the studio, and it generates extra income, even with relatively small sales volumes. If a studio is publishing a 4K release for streaming anyways, then it costs virtually nothing to also press it in a bluray, and with the streaming they might only earn a few cents each time someone watches the movie, whereas with bluray they’ll be getting the full wholesale price of that disk, maybe anywhere from $5 to $40. And clearly we’ve seen that going through their back catalogue and rescanning classic films in 4K for digital and physical release is goldmine. And I’m all in favour of studios maximizing their revenue so they can keep producing new films.

@JesusSavesSinners

True. Why pay $30.00 for the Blu-ray when you can buy the DVD for between $5.00 and $10.00. The prices for 4Ks are too expensive. I have a large Blu-ray collection. The prices on Blu-rays have come way down. I recently bought a lot of $10.00 4Ks. People in general are satisfied with the video Quality of DVDs so they never bought a Blu-ray player.

This is definitely one of the better videos I've seen on this topic. Whilst physical media is obviously not the dominant way in which people consume movies, music and video games anymore, its far from dead and there are more than enough people out there buying it to make it a viable business. As someone who collects CDs I've never had a problem getting hold of any albums I want, and I have still managed to get the vast majority of games on PS4 and Switch that I want to on physical format. As for TV shows and movies, there is a lot of stuff that isn't on streaming services (or not on any I'm subscribed to) that I've brought on DVD without any difficulty either. It may not be mainstream or readily available in supermarkets to pick up alongside your weekly grocery shopping anymore, but its not exactly hard to find online either.

The biggest warning I ever give someone is that don’t claim something where I can show you are being rediculous with a simple web search. I can literally get old PCs too. And thankfully, we don’t have a demand for Old PCs because that would Jack the prices way up of the demand goes way up. If there’s not so much of a demand, you don’t need to produce as much

Spectrum and Disney went to war over ESPN licensing fees. For 12 days, all Disney-owned stations were gone from Spectrum channel listings. Spectrum struck a deal with Disney to dump EIGHT channels that "nobody ever watches" for Disney Plus. FXX, FX Movies and Disney XD, among others were gone forever. "Bob's Burgers" and "Futurama" might be found on Cartoon Network and "the comedy channel," but "Gravity Falls," "Amphibia" and "The Owl House" are gone. An order placed at Amazon got me the "Gravity Falls" Collector's Edition, so I can return to that that Summer tale at any time. (Where is Disney Plus?) Sometimes physical media is the only way to go, instead of depending on a "video streaming service."

I ditched cable in 2001 & never came back. I wish physical OR streaming had everything I wanted instead of having to mix the two...but unfortunately more complicated than that.

@@popretro1 A couple of days back, I logged on to Spectrum and found myself on Disney+ after ID confirmations. So now I can spend way too much time looking at Disney's movies, TV series, NatGeo Wild. specials, or the-Disney-that-was. So far it's been interesting, but I'm avoiding the likes of "Indy 5" and the "Marvel mess." I may have been wrong to pass on "Amphibia," but what Disney + lacks is, strangely enough, variety. Oh well, I wouldn't have gone out of may way to subscribe t Disney+, so it's time to explore.

Isn't it sad that nobody has time anymore for nuance, and yet they sit down and mindlessly consume short media (RU-vid shorts, TikToks) because they would be bored otherwise? No time anymore to get off from their couch to put in a media they certainly would like to watch but have no time to be bothered.

There's so much misinformation on the topic. Physical media isn't going anywhere - it's simply a changing marketplace. While you are correct that some buyers don't collect them anymore, it's simply becoming more niche - but it is a popular niche market. The vinyl comparison is fair. The market is bigger than you might even think it is... numbers don't lie, the market still generates billions every year and there are twice as many releases coming out now as opposed to even a few years ago. The quality and quantity of releases is increasing, not decreasing, and it seems like the market isn't going anywhere at this rate. I expect it to stick around, always, it's just that the market is different now (and the audience is more niche perhaps than it used to be). Most people buy it online now, too (which impacts perception - people don't see it in stores locally as much anymore).
@JesusSavesSinners

Very True. Well written statement. It is absolutely true that the place today to buy Physical Media is online. It is less expensive for the Manufacturers to sell directly to the Customer they don't have to pay Best Buy for example to sell their Media.

Even Pennsylvania has “dead zones” where you don’t get internet or cell phone services because there’s no real demand in those places, except maybe a low power emergency line. Even when you do have internet connection in rural areas it’s often weaker than in more densely populated areas.

Physical media is transforming. I remember when you could find VHS and DVDs at any place like Walgreens. And there were more movie stores like Suncoast. Remember them? And Walmart had racks and racks of movies. But now the younger generation especially stream everything. My local Walmart has only 2 racks now and a couple of bargain bins. But on-line buying has flourished. There's several horror boutique labels that are releasing lots of cult, obscure and hard to find movies like Vinegar Syndrome and Severin. Physical media is just transforming. Good topic and cool video bro!👉😃👈

Physical media is stronger than ever. So many great companies trying to one up each other with packaging, extras, etc. Personally, i am almost glad for the modern oversaturation of censorship, wokeness, and cancelling because now i am buying up physical versions of movies that are likely to be ruined by cancel culture. Stuff like the Bond movies, a TON of eighties movies, and things like Tropic Thunder and The Ringer. So now you also have Vinegar Syndrome, Criterion Collection, and Arrow, not to mention Best Buy and all their phenomenal steelbooks for great films make physical media more and more attractive to cinephiles. Great video, good work😁

Well said Jason! Couldn't agree with your opinions on this more. People in this community tend to look at things very narrowly. Not because they can't, but because they don't care to...and that's alright.

I don't think anyone believes that physical media is actually literally dead (which implies zero options to find media anywhere), but it has drastically shrunk and I am concerned about studio heads opting against the release of more and more titles. Ahem, Disney, I'm looking at you. That aside I do have a question: if the future of physical media is so bright, why is it that BD player manufacturers seems to have abandoned the field? First Oppo, then Samsung, and the likes of Sony and LG haven't launched a new model in years. Is Panasonic the only serious player anymore (aside from the premium $5000+ companies)? Surely those companies understand the strength of the physical media market and are clamoring to meet that demand. Is that market also thriving but I don't realize it?
@popretro1
@popretro1 6 месяцев назад
Good points. I can't speak to how those companies view disc player sales (my guess is they don't care: "We got smartphones, flatscreens & kitchen ovens to sell, man!"). And I'm no expert. All I know is if I need a working VHS player, I have no problem finding one. If I need a working vinyl turntable, I have no problem finding one. And according to the DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, 1,331 titles were documented and added to the various databases over the 10-day Thanksgiving period alone across the 3 formats (DVD, Blu-ray, 4K UHD). So I suspect I'll never want for a disc player before I join the choir invisible. As I mentioned in the video, it's a collector's market now. My parents don't care; my siblings don't care; regular consumers don't care - they've all ditched their players. But these boutique labels are putting out more movies-on-disc per month - in 2023, even! - than I could ever keep up with! So again, physical media is no longer the "mainstream" product, but it's certainly not "dead" (unless you're the CEO of a major studio; I'm sure *they* describe it that way because it doesn't bring in the lion's share of home revenue anymore). And I get that and understand that. On the other hand, my bias is toward classic and vintage titles. I only pick up new films on disc occasionally, so I understand how the lack of shiny-and-new titles might concern some collectors. (I appreciate streaming for watching new films and TV.) What do I want more of? The more obscure films that only had a VHS release back in the day, or the TV series that only aired once before it was canceled, never to be seen again. So much of that stuff is still MIA on streaming platforms AND physical media, and that's the stuff I've always been most interested in.

Look, I bought so many movies on DVD and Blu ray over a period of 22 years. I prefer not to watch the video playing the disk. I backup everything on a PC I built, as a dedicated media player. And what a thrill it is. Between having surround sound for really cheap, and being able to upscale old movies... but the real advantage is being able to watch films that were otherwise inaccessible from other countries. I turn it on... and choose anything I want without having to search through my scanned catalog of all the covers. Or in my bins and binders. But, having masters is great. If some files get lost I just back them up again.

That's great! Reminds me a little of a coworker about 15 years ago. He had hundred or thousands of movies - all on hard drives - hooked up to this central system, where he could pull them up with the push of a button. But the difference was .... he didn't have hard copies of the films. I think he pirated everything.
