The worst Scrabble debacle ever??

Scrabble is a hard game. Top players regularly play phonies, miss words, and mess up endgames. But it's pretty rare you see a top player losing a game by playing a phony 2-letter word, and even rarer that you see that happen and the same player... ends up winning the game in even more bizarre fashion??? How is this possible? Watch the video to find out!

The plot is even thicker than this. I was at this tournament. Early that same morning, Jesse Day entered the playing area holding a tray of coffees. One of said coffees was intended for the director of the event, a good friend of Jesse's. This nice gesture quickly turned into its own disaster, as Jesse placed the tray of coffees right next to the new version of the Tournament Rules. A tablecloth covered a small gap between two tables, and the tray tipped over, spilling fresh coffee all over the newly revised rulebook. The decision was made to trash said rulebook, and as a result, the director did not have access to it later that day, when it was needed. Jesse not only got away with the Scrabble equivalent of fraud, but he also sabotaged the evidence that would incriminate him, all because of a kind gesture gone wrong. Karma is an interesting beast.

While it certainly unfortunate, directors and bad rulings come hand in hand. No director from any sport or competition is going to be perfect they all make mistakes which may affect outcome and in those cases usually results aren't overturned. It definitely sucks but I don't think it was done maliciously.
@mackmeller
@mackmeller Год назад
Yep, well said -- just like referees are bound to make bad calls in professional sports too. Definitely wasn't malicious

@@Jkfgjfgjfkjg Agreed. There are bad rulings, but missing a rule that had literally been implemented less than a year ago and that was explicitly spelled out seems pretty egregious. At the very least the judge should have been aware there were modifications to that section of the rulebook and that he needed to double check.

No mention of how IR would come back to bite Jesse later in a nationals final?

Once a director had an old version of Zyzzyva running. I played CRUISIER and it was incorrectly judged as unacceptable. I had totally guessed on this word so I did not know enough to ask for a second opinion. It cost me the game.

Good idea to have a pdf saved on your phone with the rules when you play in a tournament

I feel like 25% of this video is missing. Yea, you explained everything about what happened in the situation but what was the aftermath? What were the results after Jesse looked up the rules and realize he had the right to challenge? Kind of disappointing listening to a story and not getting a ending.
@axcertypo
@axcertypo Год назад
I feel it was implied, but the game result had to stand, since the game had been allowed to continue. It was a devastating blow to Sid's chances in the event.
@mackmeller
@mackmeller Год назад
Yeah tried to implied it at 13:28 by saying it was unfortunate for Sid but maybe could've been clearer -- as Josh said the incorrect ruling stood, as you're not allowed to retroactively change the outcome of a game once the results slip is entered (the one exception is if the players mutually agree they made a typographical error on the slip, which didn't apply here).

In Australia, if you’ve written the score (which is a requirement even in the endgame), you can no longer challenge. This gets over the weirdness of apparently being able to challenge at any time during the endgame.
@johnwilder4789
@johnwilder4789 Год назад
Interesting. Is it a requirement if you write just the score for that play, or both the score and the cum? In North America, if the tile bag is empty you’re not obligated to record the cumulative score
@trevorhalsall3200
@trevorhalsall3200 Год назад
Gotta write both score and total before making next move.
@rosiefay7283
@rosiefay7283 Год назад
In Britain, it's similar. But the rules entail rather strange etiquette. So long as the turn player hasn't announced the score, they are allowed to change their mind about what to play. So if the opponent immediately spots that the play is invalid, they must keep quiet and wait until the turn player has announced the score before challenging. Fair enough. But merely sitting and waiting might arouse the turn player's suspicion. How to not give the game away? Wouldn't you have to sit there, pen in hand poised on scoresheet, pretending to be about to write the score?
@rohitg1529
@rohitg1529 Год назад
It seems to me that the challenge should always be allowed in this circumstance… all the information there is to know is already out there so why does it matter how long it takes for a player to realize a play is invalid. Tournament director should also be sanctioned for not even having the correct version of the rules they are meant to enforce
@DadgeCity
@DadgeCity Год назад
afaict, in the end game, the no time limit rule still applies, and I'm wondering why this rule was brought in? It does seem rather extreme that the challenge rule utterly changes once the bag is empty. I'm surprised that the change wasn't the subject of much discussion (and therefore well-known) at the time. Also, it's not clear to me whether a player can still challenge even after another move has taken place, which would be an interesting scenario.
@AndrewKay
@AndrewKay 3 месяца назад
I think the wording of the 2012 rules is ambiguous. You're allowed to hold or challenge within 20 seconds **or** until the opponent has drawn a tile. I would interpret this as meaning you can challenge so long as at least one of these conditions holds: less than 20 seconds have passed, **or** the opponent hasn't drawn any tiles yet. The second of those conditions is true, so the whole "or" clause is true. In the video you say the second condition is irrelevant because there are no tiles for Jesse to draw from. But the 2012 rules didn't say "or the opponent needs to draw tiles but hasn't drawn any yet". There's nothing in the wording which would make the second condition not apply when the bag is empty.
@bvoyelr
@bvoyelr 3 месяца назад
Interesting perspective -- as a programmer myself, it's a pretty attractive one. But to me, the language is pretty clear even though it could have been stated better: you have 20 seconds. If your opponent draws his tiles within that 20 seconds, your right to hold is forfeit. Unfortunately, I'm not a linguist, so I can't explain why the meaning seems clear to me ;)
@qb616
@qb616 Год назад
Is there any rule preventimg you from saying 'hold' every turn? If not then i would do that to get into the habit of always checking every word
@mackmeller
@mackmeller Год назад
Technically no, but at some point it would probably be viewed as hindrance and a director might intervene if you're repeatedly holding words like DOG and CAT. Also there's a "courtesy draw" rule which says your opponent can draw tiles 15 seconds after you say "hold" as long as they keep them separated from their other tiles. This is to prevent people from saying hold frivolously to stop their opponent from seeing their tiles for an extended period of time.

What is up with Jesse Day and playing IR?

I feel like in the spirit of the game, Jesse should've let the challenge go through. like he messed up and then got the win on a technicality it's dishonorable right

also did they notice the mistake before the tournament ended? I feel like they should've retroactively allowed sid to play patienter
@Ascension721
@Ascension721 Год назад
If I understand the situation correctly, Jesse just didn't know that rule was changed so didn't know that an incorrect ruling was made in the first place.
@mackmeller
@mackmeller Год назад
Yeah, to be clear, Jesse was absolutely not trying to game the system here -- he was under the impression that the rule was still 20 seconds, which is why he called the director in the first place. And as I mentioned above even if Jesse wanted to let the challenge go through later, that's not allowed as you can't retroactively change the outcome of a tournament game once the results slip is in. And they didn't realize that the rule had changed until well after this game had finished (might have even not been until after the tournament was finished).
@DadgeCity
@DadgeCity Год назад
I don't feel there was anything dishonourable here - Jesse didn't cheat, and "technicalities" are a part of all games.

I feel like this video could have been shorter. You were repeating a lot. For example, the three minutes of checking tournament rules could have been brought down to half that time.

seems pretty pathetic sportsmanship to try and get a ruling on this, even if technically there was a 20 second limit in place under the old rules. I mean who really wants to win a game this way?
@axcertypo
@axcertypo Год назад
Nobody wants to win a game because of a silly mistake like playing IR* either. Not a good situation on either side.
@mackmeller
@mackmeller Год назад
As I mentioned above, Jesse was under the impression that the 20 second rule was still in place -- he was absolutely NOT in a position of knowing it was changed and trying to hope the director wouldn't notice. That would be pretty pathetic, but it's not at all what happened here -- he made an honest mistake. And, at the end of the day, it's not Jesse or Sid's responsibility to know for sure what the rule is, it's the director's responsibility. I'm sure all of Jesse, Sid, and the director felt horribly about the situation afterwards (granted, all for different reasons). As Josh said kind of a crappy situation all around, but no one did anything other than make an honest (albeit, costly) mistake.

I would happily win a game this way, just as I would (less) happily lose a game this way.
