Both the Shimakaze and Kitakami never got to use their massive torpedo armaments.

​@@maineiacmanKitakami only had her 10 quadruple torpedo launchers for a single year. August 1941 until August 1942. After that, 4 launchers got removed, and she was rebuild to transport torpedos from one location to another. She was essentially an armed supply ship for the rest of the war.

There's almost certainly more material in an archive somewhere. If nothing else, from running the ROV around between where the pictures were taken. However, Petrel generally only released a *lot* of information on the big name ships. Perhaps because they didn't have good quality shots, perhaps because it wasn't seen as relevant at the time. Some ships only have a video, no set of pictures, as another example. Jintsu is notable in this regard.

Sadly video games are no longer made for gamers, skill and tactics have fallen for stockholders profits. I never ended up getting the Xbox one or any other console since and hung up my gloves. During the first half of Shōwa era (昭和時代, Shōwa jidai, 1926-1945), Japanese were the basket case monsters... and the US authorities (especially Douglas MacArthur) gave emperor Shōwa (Hirohito, who oversaw everything since 1926 until 1945) full immunity from ANY prosecution. Who was the real bakemono here?

@@justapeasant8949If the Allied Powers had prosecuted Emperor Hirohito, there would have been massive riots and unrest within the Japanese population, and the occupation of the Japanese archipelago would have been less as it was historically and more akin to the ongoing Israeli-Palestine conflict. Perhaps even with tactical nuclear strikes to shut down large pockets of resistance deep inland c. 1946.

If you look at the left side of the pictures, it stated the depth the submersible was at. It says around 210 meters.

One could say it was built for the last war (WW1). If it wasn't for naval aviation changing paradigms, this comparatively little ship could have been exceptionally problematic for a surface-bound force to deal with. Especially if operating as a torpedo-squadron leader as was the ship's intended role. Roll up within easy torpedo range and chuck 15 exploding metal fish in the general direction of the opposing fleet; rest of the squadron joins in and that's a lot of torps inbound on targets. Also consider Japan couldn't just spam ships like the industrial supertitan that was the United States or the various major powers of Continental Europe; so they had to do well with the tonnage they could produce. Oxygen torpedoes were extremely effective (if they hit), their previous destroyer classes either had 2x3, 3x3, or 2x4 torpedo mounts (Akizuki-class was an exception with 1x4 torpedo armament, but those were primarily air-defense destroyers). _Shimakaze_ was the 'destroyer leader' concept implemented correctly. (compare this with Japan's earlier attempt at the destroyer leader concept, the Tenryu-class.)

Most people just look at the parts that they can see and call them turrets.
