I would argue that a more organized order would be: 1. Invention: Research, talking, connections 2. Planning: Answering the big questions 3. Drafting: Experiment, see what works 4. Editing: Format, structure, style, and grammar 5. Revising: Get feedback, make improvements Revising should have been the last part of the order because the final work isn't complete before editing, so it makes more sense to revise after the final work is done.

It’s such a good reminder that we all have to work hard at writing. Especially with us all online now, I think it can be so easy to imagine no one else is struggling because we only see everyone else’s final product while we’re feeling the frustration at our own steps.

When I asked for help with the writing process, I got told ‘stop making excuses’ or ‘just write the damn essay’. My god I wish this video had cone out 10-15 years ago. I think a lot of the myths like the “lone genius” model are people trying to make sense of the mental torture they’ve put themselves through trying to do something thats unacceptable to ask for help with.

Just because you talk fast and act excited doesn't mean your talk is interesting. In a post youtube, post TEDtalk world almost all presenters feel like they have to act excited and talk fast or they won't get clicks. Just give a good, interesting talk at a normal pace and it will be good. 75% speed of this talk is perfect. 100% speed like this...whoa, slow down. Emphasize. Not rush.

Inspires dread? Do you even know what words mean?
@atlow2543
@atlow2543 4 года назад
Do you? When you hear inspire, all *you* hear is the first definition. "create (a feeling, especially a positive one) in a person. " However, with a bit more research one will find that it has more than one definition, including "animate someone with (such a feeling)." and "give rise to". Meaning that it can in fact 'inspire dread' if it 'gives rise to dread' or 'animates someone with the feeling of dread'. Just in case you're still struggling however, I can fully paint the picture for you. Dread means "great fear or apprehension". Therefore if 'writing can inspire dread' is stated-- it can functionally mean "Writing can give rise to an internal feeling of great fear or apprehension". Now wouldn't you agree that this may be what she meant by her statement? Don't let your preconceived biases affect your ability to think critically and understand people, or you'll end up a pretentious loser. Edit: Also, if you think these video's aren't scripted you're sorely mistaken. Its written by an entire team, not just the one presenting the material. The same can be said for any crash course video. The fact that ASU is involved only adds to that fact.
@seanwebb605
@seanwebb605 4 года назад
@@atlow2543 Oh sure. Let's just disregard the meaning of words and the rules of language entirely. Why not just use Smurf for everything? Then we can be sure to be clear as mud. This is the sign of a lazy writer and a lazy mind.
@atlow2543
@atlow2543 4 года назад
@@seanwebb605 Are you sincerely that daft? Do you genuinely believe that each word is limited to a singular meaning in the English language? The definitions that I provided you with are legitimate official meanings of the words, not something that I merely fabricated on my own. Check the dictionary, you ignorant child.
@atlow2543
@atlow2543 4 года назад
@@seanwebb605 www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/inspire?src=search-dict-box Check meaning 1-c or 3-a. As for dread, www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dread check definition 2.
