WWE went full-on sports entertainment on this week's edition of Monday Night RAW with the debut of the "Wyatt Sicks", a faction that pays tribute to the late Bray Wyatt aka Windham Rotundo.
The group not only made a theatrical impact but apparently murdered (in storyline) several backstage crew and a few wrestlers including Chad Gable.
One criticism of this comes from former WWF Head Writer Vince Russo who is known for caring far more about the theatrics and little (if at all) about wrestling matches. What did he say and is he possibly right that, despite this fantastic debut, that the angle could fall flat in the hands of "wrestling creatives"?

I don't understand why they get so much hate, even Bray Wyatt when he was around. I saw people wanted Bray back, and they loved it when it was leading up to his return and when he came, but then it was "he's taking too long to get to the point" and "it's stupid" because they couldn't let it play out. Then when Bray passed, those same people were saying things like "Oh, I loved everything Bray was doing and I miss him so much.", even though they were just complaining about his story taking too long and some of the things he was doing was stupid (like the Pitch Black Match). Because most people are Undertaker fans, and they enjoyed all that mysterious spooky stuff he was doing, they can't see past him. When people like Russo and Cornette hate on something, the rest will follow, even if they do like that same something. I see some of the same people cheer this stuff on when they first see it, then it turns to "what have you done for me lately" when hate comes out because they all want to fit in, even if they don't feel that way. I love the Undertaker, I love Bray, and I love the Wyatt Sick6; I will always love stuff like this. I follow the RED!

A lot of the hate is BC this new faction is a tribute act for the late Bray Wyatt where a lot of characters were based on. This new faction that was introduced looks so cartoonist and unbelievable and it probably would have worked during Undertaker's era of the early 90s where over the top gimmicks were plentiful. Only Bray himself could have pulled this shit off BC his unique ability to make this crap like this work but to me with these guys in the Wyatt Sick6 none of them are nowhere Bray's abilities to pull this hookey bollocks off. This to me looks like a community college kid's play in a theatre.

My biggest fear is that its going to be incredibly hard for anyone to have a match with them cause if they dont sell, it hurts their opponents, or if they do, it hurts their aura. Side note gabe kidd was right wwe is theater

@@MrThesupremeking that we can agree on. On the Wyatt sicks though, It’s hard to explain what I’m trying to say but I’ll try. I don’t think they will wrestle straight away. They’ll probably gang handle everyone for a while. When they do eventually hit the ring one on one or tag team they will sell but they will enjoy the pain and keep getting up and asking for more be put down get back up get put down etc etc like taking two or 3 moves to put them down instead of one. Just being relentless basically. Having them all out at ringside at once to distract opponents, that sort of thing but we shall see. It’s gonae be really gd I think though

I have a hard time taking Vince Russo's opinion on wrestling seriously when the only thing more embarrassing in wrestling history than David Arquette holding a world title is when Vince put it on himself. He just can't seem to get over the fact that no wrestling company will touch him and he is so delusional that he honestly believes if he was given another chance he could do it better than anyone else.

He would do better than everyone else because unlike everyone else doing it, he knows the TV audience. He knows they have short attention spans (even more now than they did 25 years ago) and he knows that the show needs to have something for everyone in order to draw all kinds of different TV viewers. He also meticulously studied the minute-by-minute ratings which is why he was able to oversee record high viewership in 2 different companies (WWF RAW and TNA Impact). The numbers back him up. But because you didn't like a few of his booking calls, he suddenly has zero credibility? This is common amongst Russo's critics, but nobody says anything about Vince McMahon winning the Royal Rumble or the world title, or ECW title for that matter.

It's great visually and how they produced it, but where do they go from here since they went 100 miles an hour from the get go. You can't go one week where you have these guys murder wrestlers, and then the next week they're wrestling a match. And I don't doubt that they'll make a ton of money off of this, but they do face the risk of this being seen as nothing more than a cash grab off of Bray's name and legacy if they're not careful. I mean, we all remember Rey Mysterio and his tribute to Eddie. So even though it was a cool moment and great visuals, I think something like this comes with its many challenges to make it a long term success.

I would have rather had them be a bit more grounded in their debut, closer to the original Wyatt Family. As starting so over-the-top doesn't leave a lot of room of where to go. If ya start at 80 then you've only got 20 to work with before ya hit 100. Would have been better to start at a 40 or 50.

Except AEW can’t tell coherent stories with their “wrestling”. Good wrestling shows involve more than just good storytelling in the ring. That’s a huge component, though. AEW lacks that. And this “Wyatt Sicks” crap undermines it, too. Whoever works with this faction will be buried, and unfortunately, many WWE fans will just go along with it “cuz Bray’s memory”, which I find to be manipulative and tacky as hell. This won’t work well.

So what everyone is missing here is that this exact thing was a Wyndham creation, right? He literally created this himself.. now I never personally watched any of his matches (I’m an attitude era 39 yr old who recently got back into wrestling with the whole WM40 stuff)… but I’ve paid attention to how other fans felt about him and his peers… he didn’t just create the costumes and mystique of the group people… if he was as great a wrestler/performer as others say, then you have to believe he had a vision for how how to book the group and where they’d flourish right? Especially with professional wrestling… it’s play acting with fist fighting… and it all counts… we could all just say “oh well it was a great intro but now we can’t book matches cuz they have to be Uber strong” or something… one RU-vidr said it pretty well.. the whole thing with people being “dead” in the back was like a “dream world” in the mind of the Wyatt Sicks… it’s what they “want” to happen… it can’t really happen for obvious reasons… Vince Russo isn’t right… he’s NEVER right! He put the belt on an actor and HIMSELF! lol… I trust Wyndham and Bo Dallas more..

Well like I said, I’ve never watched Wyndham wrestle… only character and mic work some… but fans and peers seem to believe he was a top level talent and obviously he was as a multi time champ… the Fiend stuff was good until Goldberg happened from what I understand.. I just don’t think it’s fair to say this is as good as it gets… especially if it’s coming from Russo… as an attitude era fan and recently back into it, I’m super pumped to see what happens next..

Characters like these should be put over as psychological fears. They should make them like a boogeyman (Think when the boogeyman entrance hit). They don’t need championships, they should be there as a force for the entire roster (Smackdow,RAW, maybe even NXT) to overcome. That means stalking and Disrupting specific wrestler(s) matches. That means keeping them as a mysterious force that comes at the least obvious times (Think Fiend, Undertaker, Kane appearances). They should be made to be a PPV draw, and their matches shouldn’t be on everyday TV. Doing something like that will water them down very fast.

I do see where the concern for this would be. However at the same time we are also dealing with talented wrestlers in this group. If we were talking about people who weren't good core wrestlers then it would be a concern. Especially someone like Nikki Cross who IMO is one of the most underutilized and underrated talents out there, not just for the women, but overall. If they do this right then it will definitely work out for the long term.

What they must do is separate the characters like they have dual personalities. So, for example, when Dexter Lumis wrestles, he will be his normal self and will be "protected/aided" by the other members who will interrupt matches, attack rivals in the back etc. They need to do this for everyone and make them act like they do not know their other personality.

Seems like a cool idea but I can see this falling flat if it isn’t cinematic based. They have a track record of fumbling the “supernatural” side of Brays gimmick. HOB is able to work in the wrestling world since it’s based in reality even though they have a bit of a supernatural aspect to them. I’m not a huge WWE fan but I’d like to see this work.

That's not necessarily the point. How many of them were over before this, and how many of them can get over now? Rowan, Cross, Dexter and even Bo himself weren't able to get over. Couple that with how bad the writers are at seeing angles through and it doesn't stand much of a chance in all honesty.

Because characters like this have historically been hard to translate in the ring. You get an Undertaker or Crow Sting or Bray Wyatt (and that required multiple changes) to work every so often. And for each one of them you get a bunch of Dungeons of Doom, Ministry of Darkness, Glacier/Mortis, Giant Gonzalez, Papa Shango, Kiss Demon, Waylon Mercy, the Yet-tay!, Shockmaster etc. etc.

Don’t over expose them. Don’t even have them on raw for the next few weeks. They don’t need to challenge for belts at this time. I think it will be fine. You just have to be careful with the gimmicks and actually have that creative freedom. I think the only thing that could kill the whole idea…is the group being over exposed so fast. Make them an attraction. We don’t need to have them shoved down our throats every single week.

I think they should be used to write off characters, & idk how others feel but maybe use Uncle Howdy to possibly control undead or alive wrestlers(kinda like a Paul Barer with the Taker; my bad if i butchered the spelling 😂). If they do it right and keep them mysterious and don't over-use them. I remember when Sting went into his "The Crow" image, we didn't see him wrestle much in the beginning. It was mysterious AF when he would show and if he would attack or not. If they can use them in the same manner it can go a long time i think.

Ok i see your point. Russo and you are both wrong. This was a tribute story. They are honoring bray right now. Bo is not Bray, same way im not russo. If my job is to write Russo TV i cant do it. I might hit some points, but its not russo`ish. How many times can people root against a tribute to a man's legacy? Bo isn't going to be telling brays story word by word. This was just the introduction of the group. We saw the teaser story building the arrival. Now you really have 2 choices. 1 does bo come out emotional talking about bray, as bray did in his return? No, this will become BO`s story for as long as it works and BO is willing to tell it. They aren't your main event name players like reigns and rock and cody. But look at the horsemen without flair. Yes, all 3 wrestled and they used their numbers to their advantage. I could spend an hour typing why this was a major success so far. Yes, the future is always in question. But you don't give up on page 1 of the story. You don't rag the story before you get to page 2. Wait until its bad to go, this is what I was concerned with, and here is how you fix that. Right now it's like, wow that was awesome, but what do they do next?

@The Rantin Review, Vince Russo is a hack and he should never be allowed near a position of power or influence in any wrestling company ever again. With that said, his doubts about the Wyatt Sicks6 are understandable. Afterall, this man knows nothing about the wrestling part of wrestling, so he doesn't know where this story can go, in terms of wrestling. This is how to do The House of Black concept right. Vince Russo can't write his way out of a paper bag. Of course he lacks the creativity to understand where all this is going. Me? If I was figuring out where this is going...the Massacre would be written as a hallucination. Anyone involved as "corpses" well next week they talk about how they saw monsters in masks in their minds and saw themselves murdered, blah blah blah. I came up with that on the fly. Vince Russo needs to shut up. He almost killed wrestling. He needs to go away.

A hallucination that people at home watching the wrestling show also saw? That works with normal narrative television (but is generally seen as bad writing/poorly done) but in the context of a wrestling where we see the cameramen and have to cut to specific cameras it doesn't make a lick of sense that everyone's camera feed was just shown someone else's hallucinations

I think the hallucination bit is from a movie I recently watched (and reviewed on my other channel) called "Late Night With The Devil" where someone made most of the audience hallucinate seeing a guy pulling worms out of his body. If WWE goes with that ... :D

Stop using the words murdered. There’s no claim they “murdered” anyone. They could have easily knocked out all those people. Of course the ridiculous over use of blood is what makes people assume that mutter is the outcome. The stupid part was fans and even the announcers using the word murder. That’s where they screwed this whole unveiling.
