@@jandro8370 I don’t think that’s true. The show started falling apart in season 7. Maybe it’s because I loved season 6 so much, but season 7 was just always pretty “meh” to me.
I was lucky enough to see this movie in cinemas. It blew me away and perhaps was the greatest movie going experience I had after "Jurassic Park". Being a huge X-Files fan surely helped. But as Chris very well said, this is a masterfully put together movie, even for people who aren't that familiar with the show. My dad went with me to see the movie and even he enjoyed. He knew who Mulder and Scully were, but never watched a whole episode. We rarely went to see a movie and this is one of those few experiences I'll always remember. Rest in peace, dad. greetings from germany
This was the first movie I ever went to go see in cinema by myself (cause nobody else was interested) and I was like, 13 or 14, but already a huge fan of the show. By far one of the best movie experiences of my life.
@@UngoogleableMan Yeah, everybody in this age range I knew back then loved this movie. Even people who didn't watch one X-files episode before. I think there are very few examples where a movie is released in cinema can win over new fans while the tv show is still running and the story arc is still progressing. Greetings from Germany!
@Gwyn and Gold worker bees only live for about 3 weeks so if he did kill any, they didn’t miss much. Don’t get me wrong, I adore bees, and given that he was a professional beekeeper, he probably didn’t harm the bees.
The orginal show still holds up incredibly well, and looks fantastic. Being shot on film helps it look crisp, but on top of that, the cinamatography is out of this world.
Yes. The production crew did some amazing work on that show, especially considering its low budget. The CGI effects are certainly hinky by today’s standards but the real-world sets, locations, and lighting were absolutely on point.
And it had one of the best group of writers. I mean many shows that are now considered some of the greatest ever made like Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, 24, Homeland, LOST are created and written by X-Files veterans. I think it actually created modern television.
If i read a 30-page long story in class,my teacher would have cut me off after like 5 pages and basically be like "Thank you but we have to pass the time to someone else"
In a 1986 sixth grade English class, in connection with the novel Treasure Island, we had a project to share the life of an assigned pirate. I was assigned Jean Lafitte. But rather than just write a boring essay, for some reason I decided to make the entire thing a poem. And I made it rhyme. I was proud just to have included most of the cool stuff from his life in it, and to have pulled off more-or-less successful rhymes. When the teacher finished grading them, she announced the grades publicly, and then told each kid to come up to her desk to collect their papers. Each kid did this one by one, with some doing a walk of shame back to their desks because of their low grades. When she called my name and announced "A++", I don't remember this, but I do remember other kids telling me that I gloated and went "woo-hoo" as I headed to the front. Then as I reached to take my paper, the teacher (Mrs. Nukem) held onto it for a long moment, and she told the class that she was so impressed with the quality of my work that she wanted to submit it for publication somewhere. She said the paper went far beyond the bounds of anything some 12 y.o. kid had ever done in any of her English classes and read as a professional work. I was embarrassed. I didn't do it for all this attention and praise. A good grade was plenty enough for me. Then she asked me to start reading it to the class, to show them what she meant. I was petrified! She asked the class if they wanted to hear it, and I really don't think they did, but they sure loved to see me squirm. So about half the class nodded. I started reading, roughly at first, and then I remember a passage that sounded like a Disney cartoon interpretation of a kid destined to become a sailor and pirate. Something about his folks giving him a wooden ship toy and him taking a bath, only to find that, "Oh boy, it floats!" Becauae of the length of the paper, I didn't get anywhere near to finishing before the bell rang and time was up. But the other kids were happy because they got to collect their papers off the teacher's desk without having any more of their grades announced publicly or having to do the walk of shame back to their desks. But some of those kids hated me forever after that. --- And in 12th grade, I did a history fair project on US government public announcements about UFOs for the theme of "Communication in History". Students were required to bring their foam core presentation boards to class one morning before school started, where they would stand, packed tightly at the back of the classroom all week, until a team of history teachers could review and grade them all. Meanwhile, during the week, and before the bell rang signalling the start of history class, a lot of kids would go around checking out the various project boards and check out the pictures and subject matter. I got a LOT of interest in mine. One day later on, the teacher called on kids to do a brief presentation in front of the class on their respective projects. The teacher asked the kids before me some tough questions, both about the historical facts, and about their research processes. Because of all the attention I had gotten during the week, I was actually pretty hyped to talk about my project, this time. But I barely got started speaking, and didn't even get into the Q&A portion, before the bell ran signalling the end of class. That was the end of that. We never spent another day on history fair presentations in class, and my project was not selected to move forward past the school level to advance in the competition. Because of the subject matter, and all the late nights I had spent pouring through creepy books and magazines, I couldn't help but feel the school history teachers were conspiring to silence me and to keep "The Truth" from reaching any further. (It couldn't possibly be because other kids simply made better projects than me--never that.)
Oh my god when Scully finally get recognition for being a strong woman... I felt excited. Yes! I loved Scully, she was headstrong, determined, she saved Mulder from himself so many times. And she could run in high heel shoes...Love the movie.
I’m the same age as Gillian Anderson, and when this show first aired, I was a young red-headed female scientist who was very skeptical and headstrong, and I liked introverted, intense men with offbeat tastes. To say that this show was validating for me was putting it mildly. It’s been a HUGE part of my young adulthood, and I still remember enjoying the movie in the theater!
I love this movie...I enjoyed the "alien mythology" more than most X-Files fans. It's a shame that Chris Carter was pretty much making it up on the fly and never had a satisfying conclusion in mind, but it was a helluva ride while it was going on.
Well said. In hindsight, it's painfully obvious that he was just making stuff up as he went and writing to suit the realities of cast and crew needs. But while it was in its prime, with all the world building going on, it was a thing of beauty
The alien mythology arc held together, it just had a lot of pieces that were fed to you over many seasons. There were conspiracies within conspiracies . . .
This movie is legit great. The opening caveman scene is a masterclass in horror and cinematography. I always felt it was way underrated because it’s from a TV series.
So glad you gave this film all that love that it deserves Chris and of course the legendary show it is based on, I think it is one of the best independent Sci-Fi movies ever made even if you have never seen the show.
I was a 90's kid and The X-Files was my favorite TV show. I watched the movie in the theater and absolutely loved it. Even Back then I didn't understand how this was not a huge blockbuster and one of the all time cinema classics. It has all the ingredients, and on top of that the probably most charismatic on screen duo ever.
ok some of them were disturbing like the ones with the inbred family with the mother strapped under a bed and the one with invisible creatures with red eyes in the Florida wilderness but others were fond memories
I was such a huge XF fan when I was younger, when Mulder launched into that drunken bar monologue, I remembered it all, many many years later. Damn, the good old days.
The X-Files, Seasons 1-5 plus this 1st movie, were the highpoint of the series for me. It was hit and miss after that, but the chemistry between Mulder and Scully was still a big draw. After season 5, I also believe they moved shooting from Vancouver to California, which changed the vibe a bit and I missed the dark, gloomy ambience of those first few seasons. It's still one of the best shows for me through it ability to intelligently tackle all things paranormal. Dang, I'm getting nostalgic...maybe I'll start rewatching the series again!
Ya.. I agree with you. Seasons 1-5 kept it real, after the movie and the move to California for shooting, the vibe was gone. Vancouver outdoors could be made to look like mysterious town and dark. In California there was always sun and it became less scary, unless they shot scenes at night.
The movie was such high point of the franchise when it was released. It was such a disappointment when they kinda dismissed everything that happened in the movie in later seasons.
I extend that for one season more. The 6th still captured the show's essence with very creative stand alone episodes and a well deserved conclusion to the conspiracy men mythology storyline. It's on season 7 that things start to crumble, in my opinion.
@@danielborges69 I don't have a great memory for Season 6. Gotta rewatch! Despite it's flaws, I appreciate Season 7 for being Duchovny's last full season (of the original series)
Just rewatched it on Disney+.. it was probably my favourite show when I was at high school. I would copy some episodes into my little mp4 player and watch an episode in a boring class with my bois. It was so awesome! The good old time. Glad you liked it as well!
You’re making me want to watch this again. I remember it being a really good movie and enjoying it. I think this movie is the reason I like sci-do horror so much
Used to watch the show with my mom, we both really enjoyed watching the X-Files so many years ago and were huge fans of Scully and Mulder. Well she's crossed over to the next world for a few years now and watching this movie today again brought back such wonderful memories. I think I watched this again today because I needed those happy memories and yeah the movie's awesome too.
When I first started watching your channel this wasn't my favourite series of yours, but with time, I'm enjoying it more and more to the point that now is actually my favourite, you just show so much passion and love for it that it's infectious.
Ever since I subbed to Hulu I have been watching all the Old X files from the beginning and then stumbled onto this movie. SO DAMN GOOD! they don't make films like this at all anymore. Prometheus wishes it could of gone that deep, and it tried. Love the Nod to Independence day. Much deserved.
@@jonneyritz6085 To be fair, while the overall quality dropped after season 5 (and they switched locations) I still enjoyed it. Always thought you could have combined the best episodes of seasons 6 + 7 to make one excellent season. Actually thought season 8 was really, really good. Season 9 - well the less said about that the better 😅
What a throwback. My mom and I have always loved the X-Files and we still watch it together to this day when we can. I can't count the number of times I watched this movie as a kid on repeat. You reminded of something that has such a special place in my heart, I appreciate it man
I remember seeing this film in 1998 in the theater, knowing virtually nothing about the show at the time, and I enjoyed the hell out of it even then. I've always felt this movie deserved more credit, so maybe this video will help it gain some new fans. Thanks Chris!
Still one of my personal favorites even after all this time. It's a true sci-fi classic that has aged remarkably well and fits the continuity of the end of season 5 and setting up the beginning of season 6 perfectly.
I was and still am a huge X-FILES Fan! So happy you reviewed this movie! Just one thing I want to note. I am 39, while Chris is 33, so I’m 6 years older. I find it funny that he mentioned watching the X-FILES on Sunday nights while he was in middle school. Maybe some of you may or may not remember, but the X-Files use to air on Friday nights, for a good while before the move to Sunday. I use to look forward to watching it every Friday! That was the best start of my weekend! Anyone else remember this?
Yep, I remember spending Friday nights watching The X-Files! One Friday I actually went to the school dance instead though (barf) and kept thinking how I was missing XF and I’d rather be at home. I was taping it at least!
The film got me into the series! I was like wow if this is the quality of the episodes I'm all in and was definitely not disappointed (until the later seasons which we don't talk about)
@@d43imoet agreed! I love how happy he clearly was, and how he would insist that people can see it without seeing the TV show, because he loves it and wants everybody to see it. So cool.
@@MforMovesets It felt like only a slightly bigger budget of a typical alien conspiracy arc ep of X-Files... that was often the common criticism the movie received
@@TheDawnofVanlife Perhaps that's how movies are made these days... but back in the 90's... people wanted something different to justify having to pay to see it in theatres vs seeing it on TV for "free".
I was a huge X-Files fan as a teenager. I saw this movie in the theater with my friend and we loved it so much that we almost walked back in to buy a ticket for the next showing. I was recently helping my mom clean out her basement and found a box of my old X-Files merch, including shirts, books, and my action figures for the movie.
Those were the days, and some brilliant marketing on behalf of The Xfile’s creator Chris Carter; where to follow-up on the season prior, AS A FAN YOU HAD to go and watch the movie in the summer of 1998 so that you could be prepped for the next season.
Internet was still in its early days back then. Can you imagine all the speculation and spoilers that would’ve been on social media if it had been around?!
My wife and I had never watched an episode but for some reason we went to this movie .. and it completely turned us into immediate fans. It was so fun catching up on five seasons which, back then, was VERY hard to do without streaming or DVD rental services!
I remember seeing this movie in the theater and I really enjoyed it. Being a fan of the X-files I thought he keep the same feeling and pace as the show.
Chris Thank you for getting me into The X-Files I am only a few years younger than you but I only saw a handful of episodes when I was younger. When you did a review years ago you talked about The X Files because you had a T shirt of them on. I decided to watch after that day I have now seen the entire series twice and season 1-6 or so many many tines. Thank you !! It is one of my all time favorites!!
I'm really glad you did this movie and I'm also happy that you feel the same way I've ALWAYS felt about this movie. It's EXTREMELY underrated in my opinion. And you're right, it's not talked about enough. The show was amazing as well. On so many levels.
I was actually shocked at how well this movie held up. I was around when the series aired in the 90s, as it was a huge cultural hit (similar to Twin Peaks and LOST). But I was also very young, so I remember dipping in and out. So years later as an adult I re-watched the series (no joke, ive prob seen the entire series like 10 times now). Anyways, I was surprised at how well this first movie holds up. Its literally just an episode from the show, but more epic - and more cinematic. More surprising, is how great this works as an ending to the series. It kills me that they didn't let Chris Carter just wrap up the show with the film. So I wasn't shocked to find out years later, that Chris Carter originally wanted to the end the series with the movie. But the studio didn't want to let it go (because it was at the height of its popularity). They pretty much told Carter they would continue the show with or without him. So basically, Carter decided to stick around since he had no say anyways. What sucks is, this film really does a great job building off the hype of Season 5. And it feels like a great ending to the series. Funny enough, Season 6 also feels epic as a return after the movie. But the series quickly falls apart once we hit Season 7 (by that point David Duchovny was checked out mentally, and didn't want to be there).
@@TwiStedReality1313 I know, but he also said he wasn't going to be doing movie reviews either. You can have respect for the craft and still have fun pointing out terrible movies. Let's not pretend these directors and producers don't get paid millions to do this.
My dad would always watch this movie if he wasn’t at work. It’s like one of his favorite movies. Cool to see Chris finally talk about it since he’s also a huge X-Files fan.
X-Files theme lyrics : _Do you believe in spacemen?_ _Do you believe in aliens?_ _David Duchovny does_ _He is part of the fuzz_ _Aliens are scary_ _Sometimes they are hairy_ _Rarely_
I have seen this film a total of 4 times in theatres, 2 of these showings were on the same day. I loved it then, I still do now. It's fantastic and beautiful and amazingly paced. Thank you for talking about it, especially as a Halloween Special.
Love that you are giving this movie credit. It's a really good movie that, as you say, often is overlooked. Likely because of the connection to the show (which makes sense). That said, thanks for making this video in talking up this movie!! ☺️
Thanks for talking about this movie. Saw it twice in theaters when it came out (was a big X-Files fan back in the day and if you ask me this should've been the series finale IMHO). Rob Bowman did a great job here and the cast is great. What I found interesting about it now that the movie didn't have much action in the normal sense (a couple of explosions, few gunshots and the FX-driven finale) but it keeps you interested and engaged. Man, that was so boss what you did in 6th grade!
I’ve seen lamb less than a day ago, with a Q and A with the director, really enjoyable, but not for everyone (even fans of The Witch type of movies might get disappointed)
Ah man this takes me back, in the late 90's when i was lucky enough to get a used TV and could watch this every Tuesday night. And the cards, ANYONE REMEMBER THE CARDS?!
@@Haysey_Draws No idea at all! Although my cards themselves are near mint, all my packets are open so, not much value I guess? I know I have a photo of them somewhere in my facebook lol
I just watched it for the first time yesterday. I was waiting until I finished season 5 before starting, and I was floored. It was so good, and you’re right, it doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Idk, maybe it just hits harder after you’ve followed Mulder and Scully on multiple adventures already, but I loved every second of it.
I am SO GLAD you covered this movie! I almost forgot about it I LOVED this movie as a kid I was obsessed And I always really loved Mulder and Scully and was so invested in the will they won't they of it all And like you pointed out, this movie threw us a bone in the respect.
I distinctly remember going 4 days in a row to watch this movie when it came out. I was such a huge fan of the show and I couldn’t get enough. I ended up seeing it about 6 or 7 times total in the theater. I haven’t watched it in a while but it’s due for a repeat. This show was everything for me and got me through high school
This is so weird, I was watching your Halloween Kills review yesterday and having just watched ‘fight the future’ the day before, wondered if you would ever review the movie! Spooky!
The production quality of this movie is absurdly good for what it is. In the context of the series at the time, it’s basically just one super long episode but with the budget of a blockbuster film and it was put to SUCH good use.
People who screech about wanting "strong female characters" clearly don't watch any movies or TV shows. And if they do then they must only want a Mary Sue. We have plenty of strong female characters.
Chris ive been a loyal fan of yours for almost 3yrs you're the movie critic not just on youtube but anywhere period. I look forward to your halloween special reviews like i look forward to Christmas. Seeing you review the x files movie has brought up memories of when i was a kid and saw it for the 1st time when my dad rented it from our local videoshop. Thank you for this review it means a lot to me and i hope you reach 2 million subscibers for Christmas thank you...p.s please do more hilariousositys
"I'm only going to talk about movies I like and recommend." It's strange that should ruin a "review" channel but I find it far more refreshing to hear Chris be positive about movies. Keep up the fantastic content.
I am obsessed with The X-Files. To an unhealthy extent. And I absolutely LOVED the first movie. I thought it was EXACTLY what fans wanted, and for newbies... I understand it could be a little scattered and like "What? Huh? Who is that? What's going on?" - But I think it succeeded on many levels. The second movie is a whole other story... LOL.
Chris, I have watched your channel a very long time. I haven't always agreed with you, and I haven't ever commented before, however: from an anonymous fan I wanted to say you are doing great. Your choice to speak openly about your past to the viewers was no doubt difficult. The mention of your mother in this video was truly heartwarming knowing the familial hardships you have faced in relation to your passion. As a lover of cinema your story is inspiring, against odds you continued to do what you loved, and still do to this day. I look forward to your future endeavors. To quote Palpatine, "We will watch your career with great interest".
I agree, man. I rewatched this a few years ago, and I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised by how good it actually is as a bona fide sci-fi film, independent of the show, and especially how fantastic it looks.
Saw thi sin the theater- such fun! AND oh My DOG! YES The tunnel escape and pipe crawl from Shawshank- left me trembling. Love this spot-on commentary. Great job!
