Since GDC a major Phil Spencer interview talking about the Xbox handheld experience broke and dove even further into what he would like the most. Speaking to Polygon, Phil Spencer spilled the beans about what he would like to see from the Xbox Handheld experience, and how he would like it to improve.
Previously: There have been several reports that an Xbox Handheld will be coming as well as an Xbox Series Pro type console that will also be coming shortly after. A new Xbox Dev Kit was spotted in the wild. The new Xbox handheld game console was reported by Windows Central and Jez Corden, but the Xbox handheld rumors have raged for years and even Phil Spencer has said that he would love a new Xbox console in handheld form. The New Xbox Console 2024 news is all about the dev kit that was spotted in Korea.

I agree. Lost alot of money in games when switched to pc. Doesnt make sense that we dont get them when you infact buy them through the Microsoft store.

@@korkuc26 It is not Microsoft's call to port your purchases to PC. Devs spend money, manpower and time on developing a separate version for Xbox so they will demand the versions be separate. Otherwise they will simply develop for PC and let MS optimise for the console like Steam Deck does.

It's impossible to have both all PC games and all Xbox games on one device. You can't have God of War's PC port or a PC-only game like Enshrouded or Sons of the Forest and GTA 6, Halo 5, or Lost Odyssey all running natively on the same handheld. You need to choose one or the other. And frankly, I'd prefer the latter. An Xbox console handheld - NOT a PC handheld - has more of a chance to be successful compared to if Xbox just made yet another PC handheld that was basically just the Steam Deck or ASUS Rog Ally but with Xbox logo stamped onto it. There'd be no reason to get an Xbox handheld over a Steam Deck if that were the case. No, what makes more sense if for it to only run games that are available on Xbox consoles and that's it. And sure, while you couldn't play as many games as you could on a PC handheld, an Xbox console handheld would ensure that you could play any and all games you own in your Xbox library on the go, including games that aren't available on PC like GTA 6. Imagine if the Xbox handheld releases before the GTA 6 PC port does... That would make the Xbox handheld the ONLY way to play GTA 6 on the go.

@dreadlord2704san I would pay $1k for a handheld that runs all those games 1080p 60fps mid or high graphics settings. I had the steam deck for about 8 months and sold it when the Ally released it, I love the ROG Ally but isn't perfect. If xbox can have a better machine I would buy it day one

I do believe he is right about turning on the device and it needs to feel like turning on the console. Xbox but basically mini size. Also, some how incorporate the feel factor of the Xbox controller into it structure.

PSVR2 is dead no one buying it, PS portal dead only people bought it was parents tricked thinking they didn't need a ps5 to play games. xbox sold 27-30 million, they have over 34 million ultimate subs per month thats not including core gamepass or pc. most the feedback from xbox channels are they want the handheld so why would they not bring one out.

@@sully8317 I agree, you can say the same thing for the PSVR, which is why I'd be surprised if they put more money into the project. Microsoft is the largest gaming software company in the world, they need to leverage that instead of putting out hardware in a more competitive handheld market when they have struggled in the comparatively tame console market

Problem is other companies who make hardware are already in that space the biggest direct competitor at this point is the asus rog ally… I mean you are also going against the switch and steam deck that already have large bases already… like who is this for? The S people have what they want… gamepass is on other handhelds and phones… and with the history of the windows phone and zune being a haunting reminder that MS has a history of abandoning hardware won’t do them any favours. Going up against the switch 2 is a recipe for disaster… Nintendo has the handheld market on lock.

@@DarthAscension The way it can differ from the Switch is by being a better device, and also having games not available on the Switch. Depends on how good it turns out to be. I’m sure they don’t believe they’re gonna over take the Switch, but they can definitely exist in the same space if they have a good product.

I don't really buy multiple consoles, but I got a switch so that I could play some games on the go and finally play some of the Nintendo exclusives. If Xbox or MS put out a handheld that gave me full access to my game library and the gamepass library I would buy it as soon as I could do so. It really clicked for me how great it would be when DE completed their cross save/cross play and I can log into my Warframe account anywhere. I keep thinking how great it would be to be able to do that with my massive games library and if they found a way to make it so I could also access my libraries on Steam and Epic (at least for games compatible with xbox controller) it could really change the game for sure.

I actually think they should create a handheld, but not necessarily focus too much on hardware, as they have stated before, they are primarily a software company and secondarily a hardware company. Instead, they should develop a streamlined Xbox OS for handhelds, rather than using Windows. The Xbox OS should bridge between PC and Xbox games, meaning I could run Steam as an app on the Xbox OS to play PC games. They can also distribute the software to OEMs like Lenovo and Asus. With this method, they can produce a handheld while focusing on the software side, provide access to OEMs like Windows, and let the OEMs keep the hardware up to date.

Indy I'm hoping for a good game but at this stage CGI trailer there is no guarantee we will get the game this year. As much as I love handhelds , I don't see this one working out for Microsoft. A better choice would be to put game pass on all consoles including Switch and better support for PC handhelds going forward.

A "Big Picture Mode" on the Already available XBOX App on Windows, with an identical interface to XBOX, would go a big way. Next step would be to get OG-XBOX and XBOX360 games to be able to be played on PC via the XBOX App. 3rd Step would be to have XBOX One games not available on PC have a way to play those games on PC. So, it would be great to make the XBOX App (which already works on the Legion GO and ROG Ally) basically become XBOX, and allow you to bring your ENTIRE XBOX library to your PC.

I'm just curious about the power vs price for the system and what that'll be like because they're already taking a pretty big loss on the series s, so it'd either have to be way more expensive to fit into a smaller form factor for that price, or it'll be less powerful and cheaper. But if it's less powerful and cheaper, many next gen games aren't gonna run well and it's gonna be another hurdle that developers are gonna have to deal with. I really hope the xbox handheld is real, there's just a lot of ways it could go wrong.

What i would like to see on a handheld, Just a button so you can activate the controls with every game you play, Software like steamdeck, so when you push the button you can play games right away, Oled screen would be cool to see on a future handheld of xbox, And the most inportent thing right away your game libary and social contacts, no windows but a real xbox software divice, And suround sound would be cool when you play without earbuds or headset

I think they will make an XBOX shell that runs on top of Windows for handhelds. So you won't lose acces to the different PC store fronts but will tie in to the XBOX brand. Could be just software offered to the different PC handheld makers...

I find the concept of a handheld Xbox appealing, but as someone who primarily enjoys AAA titles and highly values graphics, I hope they surpass the efforts of Steam, ROG, Lenovo. While these companies have done commendable work, I decided to not purchase any of their systems because I prefer not to play games like RDR2 or The Last Of Us Remastered at 720p-1080p with low graphics and frame rates. The quality experiences provided by those mobile systems simply aren’t my cup of tea. However, it would be remarkable if they could develop a system that not only syncs saves (a feature Xbox already somewhat offers) and runs games locally with lower graphics but also supports remote play over a local network without compromising on quality (from a future Xbox console). Ideally, it would also facilitate remote playing of PC games in the same way. Regarding hardware design, I hope they adopt PlayStation's approach of integrating a screen between the controller's two halves - it is very comfortable - and opt for a high-quality OLED screen rather than a cheaper alternative.Nonetheless, I have absolutely no interest in cloud gaming. Based on my experiences, the latency is excessive and makes the experience terrible.

It is the right time for Xbox to have a handheld. Switch 2 is another handheld device. This is one of the first times Nintendo is not innovating on their next hardware. Sony dropped the ball with the cloud only handheld. PC handheld has opened a new market. If Microsoft can tie all of those things together with the libraries we already have then that is the eco system I want to play in.

It sounds to me like they are thinking about making an Xbox virtual machine that can run on Windows devices. A software solution like this can move a lot more quickly than custom hardware. Microsoft has already done most of the necessay under the hood work for Hyper-V with GPU Paravirtualization, which allows a virtual machine to make full use of the Windows GPU at near-native performance.

Really don’t think an Xbox handheld is on the table for this holiday. They are at prototype/spitball stages based on all info/Spencer interview so handheld more likely ready for next gen 2026. Think Bond was referencing new controller and possibly series x digital.

An Xbox Handheld would work, if it is not locked down to just Xbox Games. Which it why it would be a smart idea to maybe work on getting Windows running better on these handhelds and creating there own handheld using that. Otherwise, you might as well just buy a Steam Deck, or an ROG Ally and use Big Picture mode if want those few extra frames or play games with Deep unsupported Anti-Cheat like Fortnite "Because Epic hates Linux due to Steam/Valve". The main problem with the ROG Ally is not that the games are unsupported, but it just feels like you strapped a light gaming laptop to some controllers, and Windows right now was never designed for these kind of handhelds which causes issues usually with controller input.

@8bitnation419 Microsoft uses Steam to sell most of their games now, even Minecraft I download off the Mojang Website as the Microsoft Store on PC is super janky. I can't count how many times I have had to clear the cache for the store or do some command just to get crap to wprk again. Even Forza, all my game data was just gone one day, poof. I will never buy off the MS again, I rather use a Steam Deck if that was the case. I can play basically all Microsoft/Xbox games and run Windows Software, and it is not locked down. I honestly just see them tailoring windows to work on handhelds better and just making a device that runs Windows with some extra UI

Why don’t they make it a dual boot with a switch for Xbox or windows. Xbox os boots normally or slide the switch and boots windows they can still make windows more usable on handhelds but in the Xbox mode it would be like on console. ??? Could they do this?

So my question is could they have made a hand held that was along the lines of the Steam deck but with specs better than the Series S. A $400 price would’ve been killer but I don’t see it. A portable Series S and then the series X. With that they could’ve launched the cloud based home console they were working on for maybe 150-200.

I just wish that if Xbox builds a handheld that they make it on windows with an Xbox style launcher or even lite windows os that runs all windows app except it’s an Xbox style interface. This way I can side load it on to my gaming PC and make it feel like an actual console.

You can already do this if you use Steam with Big Picture Mode, you can even set this up to run at launch to turn your PC or Windows Handheld pretty much into a console.

@@arcadeportal32 No auto HDR, some games have their own launchers, sometimes when a game crashes it goes to desktop and big picture won’t open I need to go to my keyboard and mouse. Login to windows requires a keyboard. And other little annoyances that I am forgetting. If Xbox builds their own built in launcher or a Xbox OS that runs under windows like steam OS they can make the PC feel like an Xbox with the same features like simply pressing the Xbox button on the controller and having the PC boot out of sleep mode with auto updates already completed in the background like a regular Xbox.

@FilledWithChi11 I would be a touch afraid of an Xbox Handheld OS unless it ran Windows Programs. Otherwise, I would just stick to my Steam Deck, which runs all my Windows Games with an OS level version of Big Picture basiclly. For example, if they said this only runs Windows Store apps only, it would be a deal-breaker for me. As my Steam Deck plays basiclly anything I want, including Minecraft, as long as it is not Fortnite. As Epic hates Valve so it doesn't work.

All they need to do is release a small device that can be connected to any device such as a pc/steam deck and allow people to play xbox through those devices. Allow people to change graphical settings just like on pc so everyone could use his own current hardware. That's the only way they can still salvage something because they're no match to ps (coming from an ex xbox player, moved to pc and even borrowed a ps to play their exclussives).

I see more a stream deck than a switch. All main PC makers are making one. MS makes surfaces. Makes sense. Bottomline put out finished good games and you will sell anything you make. Palworld cause of console sells increase isn’t a big enough hint I guess.

Huh? PS already ALREADY released it's handheld.. Xbox is now up with new handheld tech.. I don't think PS handheld is UP now.. Cuz they just released one.

I get it a native Xbox handheld would be dope but we have to be realistic. The Xbox series s (which will undoubtedly be stronger) is already bottlenecking and holding back the current generation somewhat. Now if you take a console that’s even weaker than that but is still expected to run all the same Xbox games and you’ll have a current generation that is on par with its previous generation. Handhelds are cool but ppl shouldn’t expect to play all latest games on them and that is fair. They’ll still be able to play SOME AAA games which is still dope but to force devs to support the handheld as well as the series consoles would be detrimental to the bigger AAA games market.

I had a psp and loved it If Xbox had its own handheld version of the psp I would instantly buy it and wait for Sony to relaunch the psp and buy that as well.

Xbox needs to go where PlayStation cannot or will not go. PlayStation already showed its hand with a $200 handheld device tethered to the PS5 with restrictive Bluetooth capabilities. Microsoft can do better than that. They should do something before Nintendo steals all of the handheld thunder again.

👀 👀 makes sense why they made series S and X skus with smart delivery and back capabilities.🎉 👏 😮 I really hope this is all real! And that it's a handheld with native capabilities yet just a push of a button it enters you in a mobile version of windows to access Steam/Epic accts. At minimum, it just has to be XsS levels of performance with 16Gb-ram and expansion card support... imagine XsS level graphics on an 8" 120hz vibrant display. With a greatly improved DLAA/DLSS type integrated feat out the gate... Then, create a dock that turns this handheld baby into an Xbox series X dock on big screen experience.

I dont follow the corporate side that closely? But this Spencer fella was just promoted to CEO in 2022...thats not nearly enough time install his vision for the brand. Especially with the pandemic aftermath. I say just be patient
