I keep coming back to this song over and over again. The bittersweetness of the lyric and the moody beats. Is it the saddest song ever? Maybe. Doesn’t make me love it any less. Thank you, The XX. ❤
The beginning of this specific live version is much better than the studio version, in my opinion. I like the inclusion of more of the song sampled at the beginning and during the song (Alessi Brothers, Do You Feel It?), adds a bit more character to the beginning and just sounds really good, plus, the transition from the keyboard to Jamie's synth pad is much smoother. In the studio album, there is a keystroke in the Alessi Brothers song and is quickly followed by the beginning of Jamie, but the gap between the two is less than a beat and so it just sounds off.
LOVE how the begging is slowed down and Jamie playing a snippet piece of “Do You Feel It?” Then plays the actual sample & does his thing!!!🎶🤘🥁🎧 LOVE The xx❤️

what makes it feel kind of off is that Jamie isn't really a keyboard player. He's banging out the samples on one of those Native Instruments boxes that has more in common with playing a video game. Then he goes over to the other knobs, sort of late on all the transition beats. The band doesn't want to play to a prerecorded fake sequencer, so they're sort of stuck with following Jamie stumble through the beats. It's very hard to play this kind of music live. Most other bands would cop out and just the the machines do it, but XX decided not to do that.
I love their work. Talented and unique. The best artists have their exposed moments, however, I would take this, flaws and all, over any vo-coded 'hit' any day.
