Nice video! Always wanted to hear a CS70m. I own a CS80 and have thought about adding the 70m if I ever find one at a good price.

Great video! The CS and CSM series are so unique and special. No wonder BoC implemented the 70M in so many of their sounds. The CS80 is a massive beautiful beast don't get me wrong, but there's something more special with the 70M if you really grind away at it. It's earthy, acoustic, and mystical sound makes it easily in my top 5 favorites.

Another great video! Two legendary beasts! Great to see the capability of the CS-70M- it really has been overshadowed. Glad to see you showcase it here.

Great comparison and breakdown of features. Never used the 70M before so very interesting.

They're both great and sound similar. The CS80 is a bit more expensive, the CS70M is a bit more practical with proper memories, better reliability and portability (the CS80 will do your back in!)

Quick question about the Ring Mod and Ensemble / Tremolo of the CS70M: Does the Ring Mod output only on Channel I? And are the Ensemble and Tremolo effects mono, not stereo? I got the chance to play one but I didn't know if those were problems with the synth itself or if Yamaha really released a stereo synthesizer with a mono chorus lol.

would you make a more detailed video about the 70m? i own one and i'm lost. i never figured out how to select which voice to edit for example, or how to mix them. i am not sure mine is in such a good state (even after being serviced)so i would love a comparison point.

I know you wouldn’t expect this comment but I find the CS-80 the most overrated synth ever built. I bought it new in 1980 and sold in 2000. Toured with it and never had a problem. There’s just so much more that you can get from contemporary synths comparatively speaking. I know that it’s grown to legendary status but I believe because of all the social media hype. Remember, at one point during the 1990’s, garage sale pricing had this synth at mere 100’s of $. Great for prog rock but underwhelming otherwise. Just my opinion from years of experience.
@VintageSynthesizerSolutions
I will be honest. I too was underwhelmed the first time I played it. One must approach it with a different attitude & perspective than any other synth. The performance controls are where the magic is, not its raw sound (which is based on organ technology & not super versatile). I think it has reached its fame status for a number of reasons other than its sound: historical significance, technological innovation & development, status at the "1st", and its use on many many famous records and by very famous musicians. I actually feel the same way about the Jupiter 8. Both are wonderful synthesizers, but their values have accelerated far beyond other vintage analog flagship polysynths that I personally prefer: All 3 OBs & Matrix 12/Xpander, Octave Plateau Voyetra 8, Rhodes Chroma, Prophet 5 (especially rev 2), Yamaha CS70m, & Elka Synthex. Honorable mentions: Moog Memorymoog & Polymoog, Teisco SX400, Jupiter 6. Would also mention Oberheim 4/8 voice and Korg PS Series, but thier values have exploded at a similar rate to the CS80 and JP8. I believe the pandemic, the "analog renaissance", & reverb dotcom are at least partly to blame for this🤣

@@VintageSynthesizerSolutions agreed. The 70m has peaked my interest but also, to some extent, the lesser CS series mono synths. They just have that certain sound with a juicy filter for modern music making - like, the 10 or 15. The Jupiter 6 has a wild flavor palate that the 8 doesn’t but yet it doesn’t get the love. I’ve owned many vintage synths including model D And Profit 600. The Mirage, B3 and 127 Leslie, Honer d6 clav, Rhodes and Wurlitzer. The Roland D50 and Korg 8000. Many more to name a few but these all can be easily replaced with modern technology at a fraction of the cost. I do see the appeal to the younger musician who’s not known what it was like to possess an original but like an old muscle car, you can’t compare with the latest for the same money.
@VintageSynthesizerSolutions
@@hurricane6014 Agreed on all points. The CS monos are incredibly underrated IMO. I saw a CS30 go for $1500 the other day. I would have bought it if I didnt already own one 😆. Its basically a modular synth with 2 VCO, 2 VCA, 2 VCF, & 3 Env. all routable. I love its sequencer & how "liquidy & juicy" it can sound. The 15 is superb as well as it shares most of the same features. For the price of a vintage Minimoog, one could buy a CS30, Moog Prodigy, Arp Odyssey, Korg Mono/Poly, & a Roland SH2. The Mini is deserving of its historical and mucial significance, but not great value for $ or sonic versatility.

Yeah I'd much rather buy the brand-new Oberheim OBX8 if I wanted a beastly analog poly.

I don‘t quite agree, maybe because I love prog rock. ;) Seriously: I have a P5, P6, OB6, Rev2, and a PolyBrute, just to name the analog poly synths. None of these can sound like the CS80/70M do in these wonderful demos. The PolyBrute may come closest, but the basic sound of the Yamaha oscillators and filters is just otherworldly.

I couldn’t imagine watching RU-vid and seeing ads? I tend to forget there are poor bastards actually watching ads still? It’s kind of unbelievable?! $15 a month is a small price to pay if you watch a decent amount of YT content. I got YT premium, or whatever it’s called, the moment they had multiple ads on every video … where young people were doing the cheesiest dances and facial expressions with big fake smiles … I remember thinking they were like a 90’s SNL parody; they didn’t seem real? It turns out, they were advertising for a new service called tik tok, and every video clicked on RU-vid started with one of the tik tok clips. This was around 2018, maybe? After months of putting up with those ads, I did the three month free no ad service trial, and I’ve never looked back. I’d highly recommend it. Also good for podcasts and lectures because you can play the videos with your phone closed. It’s a game changer, don’t let anyone tell you differently.
