Those Piston rings(oil ones) are toast, it was funny when you said they are good. Cmon man white smoke is almost always a symptom of wore piston rings.
Top end overhaul(piston & rings), also change the valve guide seals and make sure valves are not stretched/tuliped from getting the piss ran out of it. Get another Wiseco piston kit, they are inexpensive and work well. Great video!
I just had to rebuild my entire engine. It was ticking very bad because the piston was scored badly. Everything was scored badly from lack of oil from previous owner. It was so simple to fix!

Caught up on not knowing basic theory again, TDC happens twice, once at power stroke (where you set valve clearance) and again at valve overlap ( end of exhaust stroke and beginning of intake stroke) where you do NOT set valve clearance!!!
Take the intake valves out they are notorious for tuliping and you can get a 450 timing chain a lot cheaper. I've built a bunch of these over the years.
It's been leaking oil through the gallery out the side and in to the combustion chamber that's why it's burning oil, the gasket didn't fail it just wasn't dolted down to spec
Great video! I recommend you to get a leather mallet because it can deliver force like a metal hammer but it causes almost no damage like a rubber one. Also, it doesn't bounce around like a rubber one. My dad gave me mine and I use it all the time. Otherwise, keep up the great work!
You can hear that timing chain whine bad when you rev it up. Or at least that’s my guess of part of what’s wrong with it.(only watched just the beginning before posting this)
Within 15 seconds of that bike running I can tell you exactly what is wrong with it the ticking is the valves out of adjustment on those bikes it's just set screw and jam nut so there's no shims or anything like that it's a feeler gauge set them at spec in a way you go as far as the smoking that's a piston rings if it was a valve seal leaking it would only smoke when it first started up so what needs to be done the top end needs to come off it needs a new piston and ring home the cylinder grind the valves and a gasket kit
That thing is clean... it’s a shame it runs like crap. Not knocking your work, but I would have done a compression test on it before I tore it apart. Hope you get it running good again. Can’t wait to see part 2. it’s a nice quad and that’s coming from a Yamaha 2 stroke fanatic.
Those valve covers are notorious for cracking. People often try to force that mounting bolt through when things don't line up properly and they end up cracking.
If you're estimating those score marks at 0.5mm you are looking at a rebore and oversize piston. Going to be a lot cheaper than buying a new cylinder and you know its all going to be good.
Nice quad once you put a new piston and rings and hone the cylinder and a new gasket kit. It's a Honda it will run like a champ like to see a full speed pass keep up the good work joe you do good work I don't care what any body else says . Clearly you have not drove anything better than an ex400 and LTR 450 would eat any EX 400 even with a big bore kit an ex400 is like a beginner four wheeler other than there really knows light and they like to wheelie but Wheeling isn't fast

Sounds like u need a new carb also they are very cheap for after market I recommend a aftermarket carburetor also I think u can just Tim the timing chain i don’t think it needs a new on but if u want u can get a new one also u have a Exhaust leach I would get it fixed

I have a question I have an 05 400ex it’s goes through all of the gears properly and it has power but in second gear when I try to wheelie it even on high rpm it stalls out and it only lets me pop it up in first gear does anyone know why it would be causing this?
I am looking for a sporty quad that has 4wd but not a utility quad. I pretty much want a quad that is kind of sporty like a 400ex but 4we? Can someone help me out? I love sport quads but ride in woods, farms, trails , and creeks.
