Welcome back! We have a lot of big cases we are excited to share with you this series. And we start off in Yorkshire... were the police very unlucky in this case? Or did they have an absolute mare?

I knew a copper from the ripper squad. He worked for us in our capacity as funeral directors as a part time pall bearer after his retirement. I'll always remember his tales of George Oldfield having a problem with booze, but what will always stay with me is the guy's astonishment when he came in to work the day after I attended a concert by Lee 'Scratch' Perry and I was listening to some of the great man's stuff on the PC in our back room. "WTF is this shite!?" was his reaction. When I told him of my great time to be had and at the afore-mentioned gig his response was to degrade such activities as n-word loving nonsense and basically lost any respect he had for me and us as a company. Needles to say he didn't ever work for us again. Funny way to hand your notice in eh? But the whole experience led me to think that if most coppers at that time were more enlightened and a bit less judgmental maybe lives could have been saved at this time. The guy used to tell stories of slippery steps too...probably a lot of BS, but left me with a deep seated mistrust of 1970's and '80's coppers. I know that they cannot be all be all bad but it's worth pointing out that this fella was a mason, and not the sort that build stone houses. In short an utter c#@t!

The women that weren’t killed pretty much all said he’s got a Yorkshire accent, and they dismissed it and followed the fake audio tape. Wasted years, others we’re murdered. Complete mess.
@oleggorky906
@oleggorky906 Год назад
Oh yeah! I mean, who would have thought that any of them could ever possibly hope to remember a black bearded nutter attacking them with a ball and peen hammer and various sharp tools and knifes, etc? 🔨 Like you said, so many survivors attested to a man with a Yorkshire accent and a trimmed black beard and moustache, yet they knew better. I watched one particular doco and someone said that they never got all the photofits issued after every attack, out on a table at once, until after Sutcliffe had been caught. But when they did, it immediately became obvious that it had been staring them in the face, all along. Sutcliffe himself said after his last interview in 1979 that he was wearing the size seven boots that had left prints at some of the murder scenes whilst they were questioning him at his place of work. He goes on to say he was standing on wire mesh steps so he could get into his lorry, and if they had have looked they would have seen the faded pattern. He finished by saying that they were incapable of seeing anything that was right under their noses. 👃 He was openly mocking them unto the very last.
@koolerking440
@koolerking440 Год назад
@@oleggorky906 I had to own about the photo fits not been looked at. Isn’t that basic police detecting! I think they also were swimming in info, that room apparently needed reinforcement due to all the weight of the files and cabinets.
@oleggorky906
@oleggorky906 Год назад
@@koolerking440 It is indeed basic police detective work to check the photofits, but they seem to have been making it all up as they went along. It was most bizarre: Especially so with regard to ‘Wearside Jack’, the five pound note serial number and the numerous interviews with Sutcliffe. And yes, the floor was in danger of collapse through the sheer weight of paper work. They had the big wheel in the middle of the incident room floor, the infamous ‘carousel’. In a strange way of prison honour and things, he did get some payback. Sutcliffe was blinded in one eye after an attack; later on the sight went in the other eye as well. Then he had his face slashed a couple of times and finally someone tried to strangle him with the lead from a video recorder, or something similar; he sowed to the wind and he reaped the whirlwind. I hope that the wardens didn’t run to his aid too quickly. After all some of them had mothers, wives and daughters also.

Loved this! The most detailed account of what he did. My dad was one of the prison officers assigned to Sutcliffe when he was on suicide watch in HMP Wakefield while he was awaiting trial, spending 12 hours a day with him (there are some great photos online of my dad leading him out of court). My dad said they used to have press up competitions, long chats & that when Sutcliffe would say he was “getting the urge” or “hearing the voices” my dad would tell him he’d only have one chance to try it 😂😂😂 my dad was also into weight lifting & boxing at the time, he was a big lad back then, funny enough the voices would quickly go away lol

what was your dad's opinion of Peter as a man? We know he killed women, but the ones he attacked who survived all said they felt safe with him because he was calm and soft-spoken. I've heard his voice so i know he wasn't macho. He seemed to hide what he had going on inside pretty well. Id be interested to know how your dad felt in his presence, and to hear any other anecdotes your dad might have. Thanks

@@darrenfield7060 your bull - 💩-o - meter is spot on! I’ve checked around and there is no evidence that I can find - anywhere - that he has ever been in HMP Wakefield. There’s evidence for a load of past and present, notorious, prisoners having been incarcerated there at some point or another, such as Charles Bronson, but none whatsoever for Sutcliffe. I’ve only found evidence for these places; Hamerton Road, which is a Sheffield police station, Dewsbury police station, (the first two, obviously, very briefly, for questioning) HMP Pankhurst,, Isle of Wight, Broadmoor Secure Hospital, Crowthorne, Berkshire and HMP Frankland, Northumbria but he has never been held in HMP Wakefield. Another great podcast, guys! It sounds like there was a lot of really good policework being done on the ground level with this case but no one further up the chain seemed able to put all of the pieces together, even when those pieces painted a very clear picture of who the killer was. Sadly, this is far from the only serial killer case where prejudice against less privileged people allowed the perpetrators to rack up higher body counts than they should have been able to.

Britain was more overtly racist and misogynistic in the seventies which was reflected within the police force. Also four tons of stationery and filing cards with thousands upon thousands of interview information and data cannot be effectively monitored whereas nowadays that would all be stored in a sophisticated computer system for immediate cross reference. Scientific services and the invention of DNA analysis plus improved police procedures and interview techniques would hypothetically apprehend someone like Sutcliffe much quicker these days. CCTV and ANPR cameras as well. It has all changed so much since the period of Sutcliffe crimes.

He used to drink in a pub where I live (I don't live in the pub but its in Darlo) & they suspected he committed another murder that happened here, but there wasn't enough evidence & he never admitted it. I like the little edit for his death! Also, not interesting but I used to work in haulage & yes there are different levels of HGV license. Class 2 is the rigid trucks, Class 1 is the articulated trucks. And I now work within agriculture so you going from trucks to tractors is weird!

Wrong mate! I grew up in South Yorkshire, and we did think that he could strike here. He had done so already in Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield, obviously had a vehicle, so why couldn’t he strike in Sheffield (or Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster, Penistone etc)? In fact some believe that he had done so already, with possible, though by no means proven, attacks in Doncaster and Mexborough, both in South Yorkshire. Almost everyone who has researched the Ripper murders thinks that there is good reason to believe that he was responsible for many more assaults and murders than he was eventually actually brought to book for. His photofit seems to crop up in a lot of unsolved attacks and murders.

I swing wildly between overwatering and horribly forgetting to water houseplants for long periods. Absolutely awful with houseplants, I even rotted a cactus once. Oddly though, I'm fantastic with animal care - even delicate species - outdoor plants, and even aquatic plants in my aquariums, yet don't trust myself with a houseplant other than a peace lily; which will at least remind me to water it by wilting, but before too much damage is done and it bounces back quickly. I'd love a house like a jungle, full of plants, but unless I can stick it in a tank so it grows out of the water and takes care of itself that way, I can't be trusted.

Bradford is the home to thousands of Eastern European people who arrived in the city after the Second World War. Rogulski, Sonia's parents, the gravestone of the Polish man is a good indication of how many they were. Roundhey Park is pronounced as "Roud-hee" not as Round-hay".

Yorkshire puddings for the Yorkshire ripper
@mrkipling2201
@mrkipling2201 3 года назад
The son of Wilma McCann, the first woman the ripper murdered, wrote a book about his experiences when he was told about his mother being killed and his life thereafter. Richard McCann his name is. It’s a very good book, moving at times.
@darrenfield7060
@darrenfield7060 2 года назад
And his own sister threatened to sue him about that book. McCann is a storyteller,remembers everything when he was 4🤔🤔 says him and Sonia walked home from the bustop at 7am🤯 never mentions that a neighbours daughter actually spotted them at the bus stop then walked them to the shops then back home.
@mrkipling2201
@mrkipling2201 2 года назад
@@darrenfield7060 really?? Didn’t know that. It’s possible to remember things from 4 years old, I do. However I don’t know whether some of it is story telling.
@darrenfield7060
@darrenfield7060 2 года назад
@@mrkipling2201 McCann states him and Sonia walked on the playing field at the back of their house at 5.30am and they noticed what they thought was a Guy Fawkes about 40 yards away(McCann’s own words) absolute rubbish. If they’d gone the way the said they’d have been within 5 yards of her body as they’d have had to walk past it to go through the gates to the entrance of the field.
