A cousin marriage kept titles and property in the family. More important, it meant marrying someone you had known and loved your whole life and whose family was already part of yours.

Yes....never mind the heightened risk of birth defects and illnesses for your children. Charles Darwin studied the affects of hereditary adaption and the affects of crossbreeding in plants and animals and concluded that the inbreeding often resulted in weaker, more sickly offspring. He even wondered if his close genetic relationship to his wife had a negative impact on his children and complained more than once that "they were none of them very robust".
