This mechanic could've helped some anime strategies rise up in viability since even old school yugioh had this issue were meta decks all looked the same

I only knew about them through bootlegs

Konami definitely experimented with the game back then. I mean, look at how Forbidden Memories and Duelists Of The Rose played. lol

So THIS is where all those bootleg character cards came from. Also the bootlegs had like a Wave 2 of them with Weevil, Bandit Keith, Seeker, Espa Roba and Strings. Weevil and Bandit Keith have the type change effect like Kaiba but you have to choose respectively Insect and Machine as the type, and also have a second effect where you can declare one Insect/Machine-type Monster's name at the beginning of the duel and all the cards with that name gain 200 ATK/DEF. Seeker allows you to pay 2000 LP once per turn to take a card from your opponent. Espa Roba allows in each turn to either have all your Machine-Type Monsters to gain 200 ATK/DEF or to pay 200 LP to look at your opponent's hand. Strings allows you to use monsters from the hand or Deck as materials when Tribute Summoning a Monster, but you can do it with only 3 monsters in total per Duel and every time you Tribute a monster by his effect you lose LP equal to the combined ATK of the tributed Monster(s).

In most OCG video games characters do have skills. In tag force 2 onward intruduces destiny draw your all characters including you the player. Satorius had always head skill. Also, in EDS, worldwide edition. They had lucky skills, blank card skills and able to see what your opponent face-down monsters were. Honestly, there are many more skills in all those old video games that I have talked about 😂

Imagine using that Kaiba card with Snake Rain

The janjo character card would be called 'Coffee time' pay 100 life points; take a sip of coffee then add any card from your deck to your hand (Except: Exodia the forbidden one). See what i did there... some Janjo text balancing 🤣

I do think, especially with what is seen with the character cards explained in the video, that it is for the better that Konami didn't lean too heavily on character cards for the main TCG. If they were balanced, then they would be a neat element that could add a new perspective to the game. But Konami and balance don't exactly go hand in hand, especially when direct profits are involved. Imagine how bad these _completely uninteractable_ cards would have gotten over time with power creep... Duel Links is the closest I've seen them get in making pretty character card-esque mechanics a fun and balanced thing. But even in that environment, there were plenty of mistakes made and a bunch of balance patches needed.

With kaiba, 5 headed dragon could be meta

Wonder how many people recognize these from those bootleg cards. Balancing these effects I can imagine would be a nightmare, and had these stuck around I imagine card design would have been significantly different. Kaiba alone would have probably caused Pyramid Turtle to never have come into existence. (Or it would probably state "original type".

Kinda reminds me of Planeswalkers. Actually Planeswalkers remind me of this, lol.

Thought of trying something similar to this for my Anime Deck Open (a tournament where you can play as your favorite character and NOT get mollywhopped (is that a word?) by Snake-Eyes).

Pretty well video man. Like everybody else, i only knew about those cards thanks to the bootlegs I had as a kid. Especially the pegasus one called beckas or something around those lines.
