So wish I could try this! There was a Chinese restaurant in Glenwood, IL., called "Dragon Inn" which our family and friends went too for like 40 years. They were known for their Zombie cocktails, which were so delicious and had a cult following among many people. If you had more than three of them, you literally turned into a Zombie, and a drooling one at that! Dragon Inn closed about 10 years ago and took their recipe with them. I've searched high and low trying to find a Zombie as good as theirs, but still haven't found one that compares in taste. I don't think their's had as many ingredients as yours, but I know they used 3 rums, with Meyer's Dark and Bacardi 151 among them. Seeing this cocktail brings back so many great memories (and a few not so great memories). Thanks!
Ya! Plantation OFTD makes a great substitute, it actually is 1/3 guyana (demerara) rum, and is 138 proof which is close enough. Martin Cate helped make it. It's great!
As someone with a pretty bad nut allergy, is there any alternative to falernum, and for that matter, orgeat? I’ve made a sunflower seed “orgeat” before and it was alright but assumingely not the best alternative
A question to any Americans in the comments: Why is the Zombie so hard to find in the US? Or is it just Austin where I recently moved to? I come from a European country and you can find a zombie at basically every bar that makes cocktails, even if it's not a cocktail bar...I've been in so many bars in Austin, and only 2 of them have it (one being a pretty upscale cocktail bar). Even in fucking New York, I couldn't find a zombie and I went in 5-6 different very nice cocktail bars there, none had it...Is it just dead in the US now? Am I just unlucky?
Two drink maximum? Always said the Americans can't hold their drinks! The amount of booze in that, I'd need 5 for a rip roaring evening on the lash!!😉🤣🤮
Hahaha I laughed when you walked out dressed as an Angostura bottle! Amazing! Love the Zombie! Your recipe is almost identical to the one I made.. although I can’t find the Velvet Falernum so I use the Fee Brothers Falernum Syrup. Cheers!
This is a truly great cocktail. The overproof rum allows you to get a spirit-strength cocktail that still has prominent fresh fruit flavors, and the mint aroma really sets it off. Layers and layers of anise, cinnamon, fruit, oak, vanilla, almond-- everything. It's worth all the effort. That said, in the words of Combichrist, this shit will fuck you up.
Anderstura is back!! Definitely my all-time favorite costume! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 though the Gilliganesque tiki outfit comes in a close second 😂 another great video you two!!
Anders, thank you for posting the recipe for my favorite Zombie! My birthday was Halloween and it was the perfect present. Look forward to the day when we can return to Ward 8 and have one there....
This cocktail is like the much and more complex precursor to the Long Island Iced Tea. It’s almost like a let’s throw things at the wall and see what sticks cocktails. Awesome Angostura cocktail! 🥃
Yeah there’s definitely a lot going on in this one! I do think the zombie is very balanced and surprisingly smooth for having so much alcohol involved. It sneaks up on you and will wipe you out. When I have a Long Island Iced Tea, on the other hand, I can tell I’m being punched in the face 😂
Hey man, nice drinks you bring to your channel, I like your style as well. So far, you are my favourite. 👍 I've been a barman for the last 32 years. I just came home from work h 02:30am. Still making cocktails 💪🍹🍸✌️ still love my job. Ciao 🇮🇹
You've gotta use pot-still rum for the Jamaican. Appleton doesn't cut in my opinion and you'd be much better served using Hamilton's Pot Still Black, Smith & Cross, or Dr. Bird.
Seriously you really can't taste the alcohol. The first time I tried one the bar had a deal that if you could drink 3, all three were free. But you had to prove that you WERE NOT DRIVING. I vaguely recall starting my 3rd and couldn't say what happened after. Most bars that do know how to make these only include the three rums. Dark, Gold, and White rum. This particular bar took it up a notch and called it a Killer Zombie including a shot of everclear.
2 questions: 1) Is cinnamon syrup something you buy or make? I've never seen it. 2) Why do you have 2 framed R's on your wall if your name is Anders Erickson, neither of which start with the letter R? Rum and red vermouth? LOL
I don’t recommend Smith and Cross in a Zombie. It works great in lots of things, but here it just took over and masked all the other flavors. I need to try it with Anders’ recommended rums. It did use Hamilton 151 as well
For the life of me, I can`t find John D. Taylor`s velvet falernum in Canada, anywhere, and nobody ships to Quebec either. Is anyone in the same predicament ? if you have a way to have it delivered here, I`d love to know. Thank you.
Now how would you charge for this kind of drink in your bar? I don't know how much you pay for your mint but where I'm from it would be around 1-2$ cad. It's at least a 20$cad drink for where I'm from
at my old job we used a recipe that was p much entirely wrong but one thing i did like was that we added blue curacao which gave it a green colour and the grenadine looked like blood. No idea where we got that recipe from, but it looked cool.
made two of these for me and my wife but added 20ml of passionfruit syrup and a fresh passion fruit to each cup and my wife is currently wasted from one cup and i reckon if i do a second cup i'll be well on my way 😂
Random thing but what the difference between all the different kinds of rum I ask cuz I am only just starting to get in to cocktail lol so feel kinda dumb
Fantastic. The Angostura bitters costume is so cool. And the rest of the costumes are super cool. Cheers and thanks for sharing this wonderful classic!
I remember this was one of the first cocktails I bought into. Like, I had to buy a great deal of the ingredients. And I just hated it 😂 It put me off for making cocktails for a while. I think I'm gonna try this one and see if it's still awful 😀
Yes people! Choose Anderstura Aromatic Recipes for top quality drinks. High All Star Level! I truly enjoy your audiovisual presentations and organoleptic explanations. Respect and greetings from Berlin and - to the the bar, my human friend 🔥✌️🔥
Hey Anders ! Still here in 2023 , and still waiting for a homemade recipe for the falernum ! I'd love if you could do a falernum / cordial / shrubs video since i'm just getting into that ! Wish you the best , keep up the good fun !
It's Valentines Day, 2023.. So thank you for the Halloween wishes Anders lol. Seeing you as a bottle of Angostura Bitters is hilarious because until watching this channel, I literally didn't know what that even was.
6 years ago I was served a X version of the Zombie at The Berkley's Blue Bar and it was a riot. Its basically double of the spirits while keeping everything else the same. Ca-ra-zy boozy, a real liver challenge.
Drank this on a pub crawl in Berlin. Very fuzzy memories after it. Remember a giant ballon being kicked around in the street. Thanks for stirring that memory, Anders!
I challenged myself to make this without looking up the recipe. I accidentally dropped the grenadine, and doubled the falernum. I don't think it really mattered. There's enough going on, here, that we might be able to drop that ingredient.
Hi Anders although i'm new to your channel and to cocktails in general i have picked up some good tips and tricks from you already could you possibly tell me if you know of a good substitute for the hamilton 151 or lemon hart 151 as i live in Scotland we don't really get those brands here and I would like to keep it close to the drink as possible thanks Robert.
I’ve probably watched this video a million times, I love the channel and I finally made it today. It was good ! But I think I put a 1/4 ounce of absinthe by accident and that’s all I tasted lol, this shits strong as hell !!!!
