Because modern phones aren't just for communication, they're productivity. They can do anything. People do their jobs on them. In a size you can fit in your pocket. The R&D costs for that are insane.

How many people spend 1500 or 2500 on a phone? Very few. My phone is 95$. I only know 1 person with like an 800$ phone, the base model iPhone 14.

If I'm not wrong this handheld comes with a new kind of RAM which is replaceable. It's going to be mass produced for all laptops soon but initial costs if at all available that is, will be very high.

Zotac will be a better deal. We DONT need the extra battery or the RAM. We need AMOLED. GET LOST.

Zone also has a 2280 M.2 (though it comes default with 512GB one), so that's not much different. The only key difference is that ROG Ally X has 24GB RAM & 80Wh Battery. On the other hand, Zone has AMOLED Screen (800nits) & Track-pad support.

850€ vs 900€ Ally X is more expensive in Germany

Storage is null as they both have 2280 slots. ROG Ally X has the bigger battery life at 80Wh vs 52Wh or something like that. I'm not sure how much extra battery life this is though, because OLED screens draw a lot less power, and the APU is a newer generation, so will be more efficient than the Z1 Xtreme. So the real battle is the 24GB RAM vs the OLED screen upgrade.

@@user-ds8rj2vc4v The Zone has a 48w battery so it's slightly smaller than the legion. So the ally x has the ram, the battery, and vrr going for it. While the Zone has Amoled, and tracks pads going for it. Both are the same price, it's just about preference.

GPD are a rip off

The bright and smooth VRR IPS display of the Ally X is better than the dim laggy Oled of course. And Xbox Controller layout of the Ally X is better too. VRR IPS is always better.

Smother experience especially since there going the distance with the oled at 120 hz non vrr it needs that bigger ram to run a steady 60 fps on AAA games . That's my opinion will see when it drops just don't buy it right away wait for RU-vid to compare to the Ally x . If it performs well get it . If not you saved you a headache.

As for Legion GO, the Legion Go should in theory have less performance than this, as well as lacking the OLED screen. This thing from what I've seen is £799, which is the same price as the ROG Ally X, so that's what it's competing against.

I drop my steam deck all the time, it's fine. To say nothing of my childhood Gameboy... One time I spun around as fast as I could and accidentally let go and it flew into a brick wall.

@@Rspsand07 I've dropped both my ROG Ally and Steam Deck a few times without any protective case. The Steam Deck is unscathed, while the Ally has a very tiny Crack in the bottom casing in one corner and a tiny piece of the plastic casing on top that chipped away (near top of the screen). Assuming this handheld is built well with quality materials I think it will survive a few drops at least for the most part.

Honestly I think the overly large bezels are my biggest annoyance. They could squeeze a 7.5-8 inch display if they fixed that.

Since using the PS Portal’s 8” I’ve got to agree that I think 7.5-8” is the sweet spot. Text and UI elements seems much more readable than on my 7” LED Steam Deck.

The only time I didn’t mind the 7” screen is on the Onexplayer Mini Pro, because it barely has bezels at the top and bottom and it’s smaller than the other handhelds so the 7” screen works well for it.

Is there an affordable high refresh 8.8 inch OLED on the market? They're sourcing what's available, same as valve. Spinning up a custom screen will pump the price. Especially OLED, as smaller oleds are cut out of larger OLED panels. You get what you get, or you pay for the waste.

No soldered ram. Asus did that with their zephyrus g14 laptops and that meant that you'd have dual channel up to 16gb, and if you upgraded, your ram speed DROPS past 16gb since the soldered 8gb can't be replaced or upgraded easily.

32 GB should of been standard since the original Rog Ally / Legion Go / etc. Chinese companies have been making these the longest and are still the best at it and they have been throwing in 32/64 GB SKUs way before Asus or Lenovo got involved. RAM is cheap and in scenarios where you need it it is irreplaceable. It's pathetic any company is releasing these with a min 32 now.

I guess most don't buy a handheld console to play FPS games? Please prove me wrong. Personally I'd go for a USB C monitor with VRR along with the console if I needed VRR.

@@svippe Its about playing games anywhere. I dont always want to be in my man cave to play my fps.. I play my asus rog ally X on my couch in my living room, in bed before I fall asleep, or when im on the toilet lol. My asus does everything to keep me satisfied and entertained whenever. sometimes after a long hard day of work youe not in the mood to sit and play on a monitor and you just want to quickly lay back and play the handheld pc.

Agree. Ally X proves that 24 GB Ram is a bare minimum, because an integrated video chip shares RAM with CPU.

Agreed. It should’ve been $599 tops, $499 ideally. Sure it has an AMOLED, but it’s just a fancy name for OLED. The 8840 is just a 7840 with an NPU and that is equivalent to a Z1 Extreme. Only advantage that it has is that it can use off the shelf AMD drivers…. They are new to the space, and with the Ally X existing they cannot ask so much. Better drop the price or it’s DOA

The battery life on that would be atrocious, and it would weigh a brick. You’d need a larger (and heavier) cooler on top of the battery…. And it’s the coolers weight that would be the most noticeable

@flows30 Warning: word vomit with no conclusion as we don't have enough information. People are underselling the step up in quality that zotac could potentially bring and we dont have the full story regarding features, quality control and usability. What about the hall joysticks and triggers, the trigger stops, dials, kickstand and so on. The dpad and less ram might be the only negatives I can see so far. The 1% lows will be worse with less ram I guess. I dont know how the face buttons will feel. I understand the ally is the go-to after the steam deck but the non oled display of the ally is a real bummer if you play at night and the joysticks are potentiometer based so drift is a matter of time with the ally. you can swap these out on most handhelds but we are just judging these out of the box. This seems like a great step up and down in some places but we will have to look out for the pricing and the quality control to get a real look at the value and then compare this to other handhelds around at the moment. The trackpad functionality in comparison to the steamdecks pads might also be a step down. Will steam add support in the future for handhelds with this technology? How will windows games handle them? Will there be an option to use them like macro pads and how reliable will the touch sensitivity be? Will there be any 1st party applications like the ROG allys? We don't rly know so we can't make any assumptions. Only after release can we really look at pricing and comparisons to other models in a more informed light. Otherwise speculation is pointless.

The VR “sphere” has hardly changed at all…. Only thing is headsets are running higher resolutions now. So GTX 1080, RTX 3060 or better is all you need. Typically VR games are gonna be CPU and VRAM bound. So as long as you have a solid CPU and a Mid-Range GPU you are good.

Was waiting for that one.. But steam deck summer sale was too good to pass up when orange pi might never bring it to north America

First thing I did with my Legion Go was turn off the RGB so no real loss there.

@@Invid72 Forcing RGB on a ''gaming'' device is stupid and wastes battery. If I have something with lights i also turn it off. In this case it's not only a waste but it can't even be seen completely useless.

No. Screen doesn’t matter. It’s gonna have terrible battery life. We also do t even know what the build quality is as of yet. I wouldn’t touch the Zotac Zone Unless it Drops to or Below $600
