Unless you’re a history major (or spend all your time thinking about the Roman Empire), the political and religious landscape in The Chosen can be a little confusing. If Rome’s in charge, who’s this King Herod guy? And what about this Jewish “congress”, the Sanhedrin? And those odd-sounding religious factions-Pharisees, Saduccees, Zealots, etc.?
If any of that’s unclear, this video’s for you. Listen as co-writer, Tyler Thompson, gives you a crash course history lesson on all the rival rulers carving out their own kingdoms in Jesus’ day-and ultimately, finding Him to be their common enemy.

I started reading The Bible for the first time in my life a couple months ago, then stumbled upon The Chosen on Netflix and my life is forever changed. I just watched season 4 at the movies with my wife and teenage daughter and I just wanted to say how grateful I am for this show. I did not grow up religious at all…My late grandmother was the only person who spoke to me about God and took me to church a couple times growing up when she would come to the States to visit. I am currently reading Isaiah and I can’t wait for the remaining seasons to come out. My father is now also reading the Bible for the first time. I thank the Lord for this great blessing that this show is for my family and I!

Besides, this season is still in a premiering/post-premiering state. I honestly don't understand your anger. First of all, if you have an access to the theaters, then why not to go? You yourself showed this ignorance first. I personally would go if I lived in the US, theaters have their magic and it's real! Secondly, why are you seeing the world in such a negative way? My gosh, where does this negativity come from? And if you wanna talk about Jesus that much, he also said that we should be glad and humble (I'm not quoting any verse!). The Bible starts with a couple (Adam and Eve), and ends with a couple ("the Spirit and the bride say 'Come'"). Peter refers to married couples as "co-heirs in the grace of God" (1 Pet i believe, I forget the reference), meaning there's a special grace shared between man and wife. Paul likens a man being joined to his wife to Christ and the church (Eph 5). So, I think we can safely say that God is interested in romance, whether or not Thomas actually had a love interest named Rema or whether Peter's wife was actually named Eden.

@@MrToolz. It's a TV show, not a documentary. Does a Pastor get up in church and just read the Bible? No. No one would understand it. He has to give examples, so people can understand the Bible. That's what The Chosen is doing. They have to fill in some blanks so that everyone can understand when they do talk about scripture. The Director even says it's not perfectly biblical. But it's a tv show, so you have to look at it like such.

Pharisees - They believe in the authority of the oral traditions. That's basically it. Sadducees - They believe in only the first five books of Jewish scripture, the books of Moses (or Pentateuch) and as such have drastically different beliefs from Pharisees with their own traditions, for example they reject the resurrection because that was only brought up in later books that the Pharisees believe in. Another thing they believed is that the Temple would not be destroyed, which is why they don't exist anymore. Essenes - Imagine John the Baptist, I don't know a whole lot about their beliefs but they were known to live in communes in the wilderness, have you heard of the Dead Sea Scrolls? its believed they were left behind by Essenes. Zealots - Again I don't know much about their beliefs other than they believe violence and killing enemies of Israel is encouraged in scripture, they train to be assassins and take out key figures in the Roman occupation, and even other Jews for collaborating with said Romans. It was because of a revolution led by Zealots that led to Rome ransacking Jerusalem and destroying the Temple in 70 AD.

@@marg2431 Not really that confusing. We have the major items in common and have more grey areas not pertaining to salvation by grace alone thru faith in Jesus, as differences because of the people God used to make corrections in how the NT church was developing. I call it 31 flavors. The basic are cream, milk, sugar. All the different flavors are personal preference in non-essential matters (some ARE essential some, that's why they became another denomination, such as adult believer baptism over infant baptism.)

@@InitialPC Josephus mentioned three main branches of Judaism...the Sadducees, Pharisees, and Essenes. The Essenes believed the rest of Judaism had gone astray and had capitulated to the world. They didn't all live out in the wilderness in monasteries, but many did. They believed in strict adherence to the Mosaic Law, ritual baptism, communal meals of bread and wine, a battle between the sons of light and sons of darkness, and most importantly that believed that their strict dedication to God would cause the Messiah (or Messiahs) to come. Some believed there would be only one Messiah, others believed there would be two working in tandem... a kingly Messiah from the line of David and a priestly Messiah from line of Aaron and the Levites. This is likely why John the Baptist's Levitical family roots are highlighted in Luke and we're specifically told that his parents sent him into "the wilderness" as a child. None of this made much sense until the discovery of the Essene communities and their writings, but then people started to figure out that John's family had sent him to one of these male-only monasteries and that they often took in children like this and raised them there. John's story, his livelihood, and his teachings make a million times more sense once you understand that he had likely spent most of his life being taught under the Essenes. Josephus remarked that he studied all three branches and that the Essenes were basically just too hardcore for his liking. We just never knew much about them until we discovered a bunch of their writings in the last century (and we're still finding more). The Gospel of John used to be regarded as a later Greek work because of its high Christology and focus on light and darkness, it sounded almost Gnostic. The Dead Sea Scrolls single-handedly pushed the Gospel of John well back into the 1st century and made it a very thoroughly Jewish work. They're a very fascinating group that really set the stage for the stuff John the Baptist and Jesus would end up coming along and saying.

What a helpful video! One small nit here. Starting with the Hasmoneans the high priest were not of the line of Aaron. By the time you got to Herod there was a lot of buying and selling of influence, even with the High Priest. Caiaphas becoming high priest was not that great of a break from previous 150 years. Not in accord with Torah, but inline with contemporary buying and selling of influence.

In addition to his earlier heavy handedness with the Jews, one additional thing that many have missed about Pilate and him being on thin ice with Tiberius, is that he was aligned with and appointed by Sejanus who was acting emperor while Tiberius was in retirement. Sejanus was essentially running the Empire, he got too big for his britches and plotted a coupe against Tiberius. Tiberius got word of of the plot before it was executed, came back to Rome and had Sejanus arrested and executed. This caused all of Sejanus's political allies and appointees to be suspect. Which is why Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin were able to threaten Pilate so easily and effectively "if you don't kill him, you are no friend of Ceasar's", he knew his position with Tiberius was extremely tentative and despite finding no guilt in Jesus nor with a real desire to kill him acquiesced to the mob and "washed his hands" of the whole affair.

Respectfully, I don't think the writer nor the editor did their research correctly on this as it never mentions the Sadducees as believing there is no afterlife, as Matthew 22:23 KJV (because if I don't use the KJV people don't think its credible -_-) the b part states that "the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection," not the afterlife. This a common misconception with the teaching of the people having an afterlife where the soul lives on after death (Eccl 9:5).

As for the last Pharisees, it’s not that they were adding things to the Torah, they would be very literal to the point of contradicting the true intent of the law. That is to draw them towards a holy life. I think they do a really good job at portraying this in the show.
@TechWeLove
@TechWeLove 2 месяца назад
Oh I would agree the Pharisees definitely were adding things, not to the Torah, but almost as if it was adding to the Torah. When they almost make Rabbinical teachings as equivalent to Torah. It's also what I accuse the Catholics of doing, and definitely "Mormons". The Word of God, The 66 books of the Bible is what we should depend upon.
@hectorweir9858
@hectorweir9858 2 месяца назад
@@TechWeLove What you say about their teaching being taken as the law itself, I grant you that point. However, this is not the same as saying they were adding to scripture. As for your comment on Catholics and Orthodox, on adding things to the Bible is inaccurate. The deutorocanonical books were held as important by the early church as they give you an account of the time in exile. So saying Catholics and Orthodox add books is as consistent with the historical record as saying Protestants remove books of the Bible. There were two cannons in the early church, those they had in the original Hebrew and the ones written during the exile that would be written in Greek due to socio-historical reasons. Also, perhaps I’m going to be a little picky at your comment but if we are going to be so legalistic about the 66 books in the KJB we should use the correct terminology. The “Word of God” comment is inaccurate. Many of the books in the Bible, though all are inspired by the spirit, do not actually give you the Word. When Jesus speaks or a prophet shares God’s word, yes. But are we really going to say that the census written in Numbers or the Chronicles of the kingdoms of Israel are the words of the God of Abraham?

@donkeyredeemed4175

@hectorweir9858 I can't quote the actual passage, but in the Bible, it basically states that God tells us the end from the beginning... There have been parallels to the accounts written in Chronicles and Kings reoccurring in cycles throughout history, with each cycle being larger than the previous. This is what Solomon refers to as 'what has been will be'. This being said, I would have to believe that yes, all the books in the Bible are God's word, even if we may not understand it all yet, or even if you aren't able to recognize it. An example of replaying of a written account in the Bible is the events of the book of Esther was replayed during WW2... Julius Streicher even acknowledged this just as he was hung during the Nuremberg trials.
@hectorweir9858
@hectorweir9858 2 месяца назад
Again, there’s a difference between the word of man written down due to the inspiration of the Spirit, and the Word of God shared with us in scripture. That is either because God has spoken through His Prophets, as it has been passed down to us with the Torah and the Deutorocanon, or in the Gospels with the accounts of what the Lord shared with his disciples and in his Sermons. Of course, John does tell us that Jesus said and did a whole lot more than what him and Luke and Matthew wrote down in their accounts. So one is left to wonder what else was left out since every single revelation and interaction of Jesus during his ministry would be like a never ending spring or fountain of life. Therefore, I think if we are going to be picky about what we say about scripture, we should use the correct terminology. After all, every word contained in the Bible is incredibly important. I mean, it’s the foundation of our knowledge of our Faith and it is the primary source for us to know everything that has to do with Salvation History. Yet, not every book is the same and not every word carries the same weight. For instance, Genesis is a collection of Epic Poetry and oral stories passed down from antiquity. The nuance of the interpretation of the events as share in the first creation stories tell you theological truths of infinity value but the details are very much rich on symbolism and full of allegories. Exodus, Numbers, Leviticus and Deutoronomy contain Chronicles, Census, descriptions of artifacts, law, all intertwined with the word of God as shared with the chosen people. And we can go through every single book with much more nuance but I think I got my point across. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Thank you so much for the information, Tyler! The Chosen is magnificent! I found most interesting in your "history lesson" the fact that Caiaphas was not of Aaron's Line/Tribe, but rather his position as High Priest had been appointed to him by his Father-in-law. Perhaps this is one of the reasons Caiaphas vehemently wanted Jesus to die. Caiaphas knew that Jesus knew that Caiaphas was NOT "of the law of Moses" and was a false leader. Caiaphas was afraid of losing his position, and he would have faced "stoning to death" for his corruption of "The Law". ONLY those of the Tribe of Aaron would be allowed in the Holy of Holies!

Thanks! This is a cool clip to know the key players. One group (largest next to Pharisees) not mentioned but v. impt are the Essenes ('pious ones' ). They are in the background story. But consider these: John the Baptizer probably was raised by them (they took care of oprhans of priestly families) and John's ministry was at their door step. Also "the man with the pitcher of water" in Luke 22:10 was suggested by some to be an Essene monk (i.e. water carried by only slaves, women or monks). Their history is interesting: they believed themselves to be the true priests (Aaronic line) & the temple's priesthood was a sham. Their writings and thoughts are probably well known by followers of John and Jesus. In Jesus' beautitudes' "poor in spirit" is a similar term used by Essenes, and likely carry a different meaning that what we think. Perhaps a side season with John the Baptizer's background story: the Essene years ? 🙂

I think that The Chosen does an excellent job in portraying all of the different factions that were involved with Jesus at that time. In fact, it is this aspect of the show that differentiates it from other, similar productions. I have seen many other movies, books, etc. concerning the life of Christ and I think that the only other production that is in the same category as The Chosen is a TV-Movie called The Day Christ Died. It came out in the 80s (and was way ahead of its time) and, like The Chosen, was focused on making Jesus more relatable. Up until that point, the other movie/TV productions (such as The Greatest Story Ever Told, Jesus of Nazareth, etc.) were simple, straightforward and faithful retellings of the Scriptures and while they were (for the most part) excellently written and acted, it was a completely different take on the subject to see a TV Movie of the Week delve not only into all of the different factions that played a part in Jesus’s life but, also, into the political climate that was taking place in Rome and Jerusalem at the time. But, because it is only 3 hours long, it was only able to focus a little bit on the disciples, while the majority of the attention was focused on Pilate and his wife, Claudia, and the Pharisees-particularly Caiaphas. (In fact, this was the first time I had ever seen the Pharisees portrayed as anything other than villains-and especially Caiaphas, who was portrayed as a man who was caught right in the middle, because, on the one hand, as a temple elder-i.e., the highest elder, the head of the Sanhedrin-his job was to keep the peace and to do everything in his power to prevent any further trouble or uprisings in the country that would result in any more Jews getting killed. Or, to put it another way, his job was to appease the local Roman officials. But, on the other hand, he also had to deal with not only the populace but, also, a small, but very vocal, group of Pharisees who were very much in Jesus‘s corner-and who weren’t afraid to show it, either, while Caiaphas, himself, had no idea what to believe.) And this was also the first time that I had ever seen the Romans treated even-handedly, as well, because while Pilate was clearly a hard and brutal man (and portrayed brilliantly by Keith Michell), he was also portrayed as sarcastic, humorous and witty-and very much influenced by his wife (Hope Lange, who was also brilliant as Claudia). But, in the end, both he and Caiaphas did what was politically expedient-for both of them. (And there was also a cameo appearance by Jonathan Pryce-who, in my opinion, should have won an Emmy for his portrayal of Herod Antipas, as brief as it was. In fact, if not for Christopher Plummer‘s mind blowing performance as Herod in Jesus of Nazareth, I would say that this was the best portrayal of Herod that I’ve ever seen. But, fairness compels me to tip my hat to Captain von Trapp, too-and he, too, should have won an Emmy.) And then there was the casting of Chris Sarandon as Jesus (which was 100% done to make Jesus more relatable). But, while he gave a good performance (and he did make Jesus relatable-although most of the TV critics referred to him as a “hippie Jesus”), his performance was somehow lacking (in my opinion, what was lacking was Jonathan Roumie’s reverence) and, as a result, his performance was the one weak link in what was otherwise a very strong and unusual movie. Btw, this movie has been uploaded twice onto RU-vid, but despite the fact that it was supposedly uploaded by 2 different people, the movie is cut off 5 minutes before the end-both times, in BOTH uploads). And since the ending (which is irony at it’s very best) is what completely makes the movie, I can’t recommend watching it on RU-vid-which is really a shame, because this is a damn good movie!

@@angelaspivey4494 I would like to get an answer to that question, myself, because I have been looking for it online-with no luck (other than those 2 RU-vid uploads with the last 5 minutes chopped off). But, I do have a copy of it which I taped myself; the only problem is that I taped it onto a VHS tape. (The first time I saw it was on Good Friday in 1985, and I taped it off the TV. It was a rerun by then and it was rerun several times during the 80s and 90s, because I watched it more than once.) My plan has always been to transfer it from VHS to DVD disc (along with the Jesus of Nazareth miniseries, which I also taped off the TV), but every vcr/dvd combo unit I’ve bought has broken down before I could get the transfer done. I will tell you this much: if I can figure out how to get that movie digitalized, I will also upload it onto RU-vid, because it’s a movie that should be seen 😃

The way season 4 sheds light on possibly why Thomas was so doubtful is spectacular. Granted, we won't know exactly if this was the case on this side of Heaven, but it definitely makes sense, and very powerful! If you haven't seen season 4 in theaters, make sure you have plenty of tissues on stand by when you watch it! ❤

My experience with reading in scripture about all these people has been that they kind of run together and it's hard to decipher who is who. Watching The Chosen has been SO HELPFUL in understanding which group does what, and why they were against Jesus. It is so interesting. Now when I read the gospels (and Acts) I'm 100% clear on who is who and why they're reacting the way they are. Thank you!!!!

So, Jesus having a different message (and followers who believe in his message), was too much for those who thought that it was not adhering to the Torah and they feel threatened. That creates unrest, and Pilate can't have any unrest because his power was hanging by a thread. This causes nearly everyone to be against Jesus. Politics and power get the Messiah killed. We haven't learned a thing in two thousand years.

the way the actors portray their hate for the truth is so very accurate for what we endure in these times also. I watch the first 3 seasons often. I dont watch tv and have hooked my tv up to my desktop as my monitor to fulfill my information needs. people dont understand that Jesus didnt come to change the law. it is by the Grace of God that we are Chosen. corrupt man cannot even see how corrupt he is until God shows him. so when I am in need I start the whole thing over again from the beginning.

Actually, this was a very good interpretation of the reality of Rome and of the different Hebrew sects. I would just add, that the Saduccees are the Zadokites who are the Levites from the Aaronic Priesthood. Somehow, most everyone omits this fact. You can't have a temple system without the Zadokites per the LAW. Which means, John the Baptist was a Saduccee/Zadokite since his father served in the temple in which the angel fortold of the birth of a son.

One interesting thing to note historically as well (that I am not sure comes across in the show) is that on a personal level, Hillel and Shammai got along pretty well, despite their differences of opinion on matters of Jewish law. The animosity between the two schools started with their disciples, not themselves.
