What if a final resting place turns out to be not so final? That is what happened to those we are talking about today. These 10 famous and notable people were laid to rest, but different reasons led to them being disturbed. Join me as we check that out. My videos are all cemetery related, please subscribe and join me for more videos.

I had a classmate who could honestly claim he went golfing with famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1985. He died in 1959. In a very controversial and contentious decision, FLW was disinterred froM Taliesin in Spring Green WI, and moved to Taliesin West in AZ, per his late 3rd wife’s wishes. My friend’s family owned mortuary business got the job. So they dug him up, and apparently he had a hi-zoot coffin, because it was hermetically sealed and he said FLW looked PERFECT. He was especially excited because he was into architecture (in fact I met him in the College of Architecture and Planning a few years later). Anyhoo he said the most outstanding feature was that he was RED. He wasn’t sure if it was a reflection of FLW’s Native American heritage, or perhaps some chemical reaction. Anyhoo, he was cremated and then his family was entrusted to delivering the urn to either FLW’s daughter or his foundation. Trouble was, he was cremated on Friday but the hand-off wasn’t until Monday. Because it was an important job, my friend’s dad said “don’t let him out of your sight!” Well, he already had a tee time on Saturday….so…he very carefully put Frank in his golf bag, and took him out for a round of golf!!!!

Also, when Jacquelyn Kennedy was making funeral arrangements for her husband, she wanted their 2 children that had died previously buried next to their father. A stillborn daughter, Arabella that was born 1956, and a son Patrick, who died at just 2 days old, in August 1963 were both exhumed and buried next to their father. They are buried next to their father and mother to this day at Arlington. I love your channel! Mary Ballard

Lincoln's body was also stolen and unsuccessfully held for a ransom, which is why when he was laid in his permanent maselium, several feet of concrete were used to seal the grave and insure that the body would never be stolen again. His old maselium is only a short walk from his permanent tomb in the cemetery in Springfield, IL

William Quantrill's body is buried in three states, after being moved several times and bones being separated. The skull spent several years in a frat house in Kansas. The last burial, of what could be recovered, was in the Confederate Veterans Cemetery at Higgensville Missouri. It's in a box, in the ground, encased in concrete as not to be disturbed or stolen again.

Almost every public figure memorialized in a fancy mausoleum was temporarily interred somewhere while the final resting place was under construction. Examples are Grant, Garfield, McKinley, John F Dryden. And Harry Helmsley got moved to a new mausoleum in a new cemetery when the 'view" from his original mausoleum was "spoiled" by the construction of a public mausoleum by the cemetery.

I saw a program on Poe a few years ago. After running test on samples of his hair taken at the time of his death, it's now theorized that Poe died from Rabies. A person who has an untreated rabies infection would exhibit much the same symptoms that were recorded in Poe's last days. Plus the Poet had a proclivity to try and collect stray cat's as they were his pet of choice.

Robert Lincoln was at the opening of his father's coffin in 1901 for identification. He noted that the body was in very good condition except that it turned the color of a foot ball and a small American flag that had been placed on his chest has deteriorated leaving only small red bits of cloth on his chest. This was from an article published in life magazine around 1960 or so.

Hey Chris...have you ever read the story of when they reinterred Elvis? Vernon wanted him buried at Graceland to begin with..but the city of Memphis would not let him. There is a whole big story about 3 men who broke into the cemetery he was first placed in, with the intentions of taking his body. Happened about a week after he was buried. After this...Memphis let them move him to Graceland. There is a lot of stories out there about it. Some say the men were hired to do this by Vernon, or by one of the Memphis Mafia, in order to have a reason to move him. With just a little research there are some great video's out there about it..and the men who tried to do it.

In Greenbrier County, WV, a woman named Zona Heaster Shue died around 1897 and it was believed, at the time of her death, that she died naturally. Legend has it that her spirit came to her mother in a dream and told her what had really happened to her. Her remains were exhumed and it was proven that the testimony of Shue were accurate, and her husband was then put in prison for her murder. It was determined that she died of a broken neck from having been strangled. It's a known story in Greenbrier County, WV. Shue is known as the "Ghost of Greenbrier" as her testimony marked the first time that a ghost helped convict a man.

Jean Paul Getty, founder of Getty Oil and philanthropist, died at his home in England in 1976. His remains were shipped back to his Malibu Villa in California. Graves had been previously prepared in a shady with bench where Getty often sat looking out over the Pacific ocean. The graves were temporary until elaborate chambers were constructed at the Getty museum and the remains reinterred. The museum sits at the top of a steep, steep hill. Garden workers exhumed the remains of Getty and his two sons for re burial. It was all done under the cover of darkness to eliminate prying eyes. When workers unloaded JP’s casket, the lid popped open and his body tumbled out then rolled down the hill. He was a very tall man and there wasn’t a casket long enough, so they had to “make it work”. The casket being too small created too much tension or pressure causing the lid to pop open. All the gardeners were extremely superstitious and ran screaming from the site to call the Getty representative. No family or friends were present. Quite an ordeal for the wealthiest man in America.

@@Whittdocs ... My mother died at 29, as she was murdered by her third husband. Obviously the entire family was in shock and when she was buried her name was on one side of the four person plot but she was buried on the other. No one in the family felt a need to change the stone, it was an honest mistake. Also, my grandparents didn't put her official last name on the head stone because that would have been the name of her killer. Instead, they put her maiden name on it. Many years later my grandparents were buried there.

There are 2 published accounts by individuals at the final burial of A. Lincoln where concrete was poured over him that it included his family also. The marked crypts facing the Lincoln marker of his family are likely empty. Lincoln does not actually reside under the marker but lies several inches north of the marker. Lincoln's Tomb was rebuilt several times. That area of Oak Ridge has an underground river and the original foundation was not stable. The last reconstruction added the circle hallway around the interior. There was a DVD produced about the history no longer available that has many interesting photo's.

If you do a part 2 here's a few more: Our 1st President George Washington was originally buried in a temporary vault on his Mt. Vernon estate when he died in 1799, and upon the completion of the larger tomb where he is now interred, was moved there. (You can still see the original, now empty vault. I've been to Mount Vernon.) Elvis Presley was originally interred next to his mother in the mausoleum at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis when he died in August 1977. After an attempted grave robbery just a few weeks later, his father Vernon got permission from the city of Memphis to move both bodies to Graceland in October '77. Finally, Judy Garland was buried at Ferncliffe Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY when she took her own life at the young age of 47 in 1969. She remained there for 40 years and within the last decade her children, desiring to have their mother close to them, moved her body across country where she is now entombed in the Judy Garland Pavilion at the legendary Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Elvis and his mother was moved from a cemetery before they were buried at Graceland due to Elvis father received rumors of that Elvis body would be used as ransom. So he and his mom were moved so they can be on watch at Graceland. Both were buried in vaults in the Meditation Garden.

I don’t know if it was/is common practice but George Washington (and Martha??) we’re both exhumed to be moved from one place on Mount Vernon to another please that is more tourist friendly. I wonder if they other family graves that laid with with them in the first burial spot were also moved?? I think I remember something about the first spot deteriorating..???

Thank you so much for the comment. I believe Washington was placed in a family tomb until the construction of his current tomb was completed.

Honorable mention for the Lincoln Conspirators who were buried on the grounds of the Washington Arsenal where they were executed, then exhumed later and returned to their families. I have actually seen the skull of Lewis Payne. Lest we forget, Joseph son of Israel, who was buried in Egypt as a Pharoh, then when his people were freed some 400 years later they carried his bones on a litter to the promised land and he rested with his fathers.

Edgar Allan Poe was beaten to death though. Abraham Lincoln was exhumed so often that up until1901 he didn't have a final resting place and the final time his coffin was opened, it was to check on the condition of the body which had been embalmed with cow manure which was used until the advent of liquid fertilizer which is the current embalming fluid because it gives the body a more lifelike appearance and makes tbe next of kin happier (formaldehyde isn't used because who would want to spend 6 hours cleaning up the morgue after the back falls out and petrified remains and internal organs hit the floor?) .
