Thelma Houston "Don't Leave Me This Way" (2023 Extended Revisit Mix) *** 

Thank you, thank you, thank you, MotownBoy!! You did a FABULOUS job on this! BRAVO!!! This song still electrifies me! I fondly remember recording it off FM radio when it was released in Nov 1976 on one of my reel-to-reel machines. I also fell in love dancing to this song on the disco dance floor as well. Little did I know that some 25 years later, she would be in my living room doing scales, as my partner was her vocal coach. I became the one she called when she needed help with her laptop computer and moving stuff in her home. What a concept! She's still going strong doing concerts. Not too shabby for a 77-year-old great grandmother!

Amazing job! Here in the UK both Harold Melvin & Thelma's versions charted at the same time. The UK chart battle saw Melvin winning out with a Top 5 place while Thelma stalled at 13. Both very different and both fantastic- the two records obviously split sales of what would've most likely have been a No1 record. Interestingly the track was first cut at Motown with Diana Ross in mind as a kind of follow up to Love Hangover- you can of course hear the similarities in the arrangements. The song was reassigned to Thelma giving her the big break she had been waiting for since signing with Motown in 1972- she had already lost out to Diana when a track Thelma had recorded and was about to release as a single -Do You Know Where You're Going To- was given fresh lyrics and rerecorded by Diana Ross becoming her 3rd solo No1 in 1976. Don't Leave Me This Way is of course one of THE most iconic anthems of the disco era.

I really like the Teddy Pendergrass version of this song when he was with Harold Melvin & the bluenotes. But I must say having come of age during the Disco era, Thelma Houston had us all dancing throughout the night.🎉🎉🎉
