The reason we don’t feel safe is exactly this. It’s not about our manhood or pride. It’s about giving you the keys to our sanity and security. We put our significant others on a pedestal. Not consciously either. Especially Black men that have suffered extreme abuse from our caregivers. Whether it be from our mothers who were too hard on us because they didn’t know how to raise men and their sense of masculinity was violence. To our fathers who also went through the grinder and aren’t emotionally intelligent enough to separate their own abuse from proper discipline. So, when we finally find that woman who we want to share our life with, we find ourselves in this quagmire of wanting to be our best selves at all times in their eyes. It’s easy to be “vulnerable” with a stranger because if things go left, we can easily cut them off. There’s no risk. But to be vulnerable with your wife/ life partner? One errant word and we are now arguing or fighting because vulnerability is a two way street. We cannot be angry, sad, melancholy, empty, or any other slew of emotional turmoil because we know that your love for us will make it personal. It’s a two way street. The difference is, most women, have been conditioned to be outspoken and forthright. Been given license to cry. Given license to express emotion. Y’all can yell, scream, shout, and complain and it’s just being a woman. Whereas men have to find alternatives to those outlets to vent. If we yell, scream, and shout we are seen as toxic and not in control. We have to dance that fine line. Tahir touched on this ever so slightly when he said he was rushing to go have his alone time so he can yell, be loud, play his music, talk on his phone without having to worry about the perception of his wife to his behavior. Our actions reflect back on our families and this is made apparent at every opportunity. The unfortunate truth is that our wives are not safe spaces for the totality of our beings. Especially when our role is protector and provider. If Superman showed up to save you and had a mental breakdown right in front of you where he shot lasers into the sky and tossed cars into space and screamed, you would see him as unhinged and more dangerous than any attacker you’ve ever faced. You wouldn’t go up to him and hug him and tell him it’s ok to be broken inside. That’s not the role he’s supposed to be playing. Same with us. Sometimes we want to take off the cape and just let our thangs hang. We would love to be vulnerable at home. Truly vulnerable. But the risk of looking like an unhinged monster is too great. And until you’re willing to walk into that maelstrom and grab hold of us and tell us it’s not ok to throw cars into space, we will continue to micromanage our presentation to the ones we hold most dear.
