"Theluli Banbukeyo" is crispy fried breadfruit chips, a delicious local delicacy commonly produced in islands.
It can be eaten on its own or with Rihaakuru. It is a finger licking delicious snack. Women get together to cut and fry the chips. It is made amongst lots of chatter, laughter and love and is often exchanged as gifts between friends and family. It is no wonder that every Maldivian looks forward to the breadfruit season
To make fried breadfruit chips, you will need:
1 breadfruit
2 cups of vegetable oil, for frying
Salt, to taste
Instructions:
1. Begin by heating the oil in a deep pot or fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
2.While the oil is heating up, peel the breadfruit and slice it into thin, even chips.
3.Once the oil is hot, carefully add a few breadfruit chips to the pot or fryer. Be sure not to overcrowd the pot.
4.Fry the chips for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
5.Remove the chips from the oil using a slotted spoon or strainer and place them on a paper towel to drain any excess oil.
6.Repeat the process with the remaining breadfruit chips.
7. Once all the chips have been fried, sprinkle them with salt to taste.
Serve the chips hot and enjoy!
