Theme from Laura (1944) - David Raksin

There are elements of Maurice Ravel's 'Daphne et Chloe' in this. You can find this version on a cd called "The New York Pops Go To The Movies' on Amazon.
In this Otto Preminger directed film noir we meet some of the defining characters of the genre, and we view one of the best movies of the 40s. Despite the great script, to-a-tee acting, smoky atmosphere and moody cinematography, what really comes in to focus with this movie is its music. After all, if you look at most of the great movies, you will find a great score backing up the brilliance. This score is done by David Raksin.
Year: 1944
Movie: Laura
Director: Otto Preminger
Players: Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, Vincent Price and Judith Anderson.
Genre: 1940s Film Noir
My Rating: 9.5/10
My Music Rating: 9/10

This is the the one song that both Cole Porter and Irving Berlin wished that they had written. That says it all about the quality of this song from two of the greatest composers of the last century. I love the film and the song (my beloved mom’s favorite). Miss you mom and dad.❤

My name is Laura and I have had an obsession with Vincent Price! I love this movie and I am watching it right now it’s on tv. LOVE the theme song! I remember as a kid my Mother had this song on an album and she would play it. I really didn’t appreciate the music as a kid but as I saw the movie later and thought about my Mom playing it, it’s a special memory! The whole cast was fantastic! ❤❤

She died 30 years ago today. She was so pretty and such a wonderful actress. I think her looks got in the way for she has never been given her due as an actress. I can't see anyone playing Laura but her. When you look at her you can see why Waldo got bent out of shape at the thought of losing her to any other man, and why Mark(Dana Andrews) was so gone on her the moment she came though that door. There was no one like Laura! Thank you Gene Tierney for all Laura and all the films you left behind.

For those who never seen this movie PLEASE be sure to watch it all the way to the end for the shocker. The melody is so haunting. And to watch Dana Andrews fall in love with the portrait of Laura adds a certain romance. It's one of those movies that every time it's on TMC (not often enough, for me) I watch it. Otto Preminger really outdid himself on this film. Bravo!

Gene Tierney was, in my view, THE most beautiful woman ever to walk the face of this earth. That still of her at 1m.40s is simply stunning. It's impossible for me to hear this theme without thinking of her, and equally impossible to think of her without hearing this theme. What a combination. We can wait around, but I cannot believe we will ever see the likes of this again.

I first saw this movie in 1977 at the age of 22 and was just so blown away and deeply moved by it (I was just a puddle in some scenes) - and the music was such a big part of it. You know the feeling of something half remembered, of something that never happened, yet you recall it well. You know the feeling of recognizing someone that you've never met as far as you could tell, well. Laura is the face in the misty light, footsteps that you hear down the hall. The laugh that floats on a summer night that you can never quite recall. And you see Laura on the train that is passing thru. Those eyes, how familiar they seem. She gave your very first kiss to you. That was Laura but she's only a dream.

Thanks so much for this version! AND Very few comments about... Dana Andrews, my fave of them all from Gable thru Nicholson, and I am a trained professional actor. Andrews had that great run-- 1944 Laura 1945 A Walk in the Sun 1946 The Best Years of Our Lives. That guy had such a simple humble totality about his work, and like Mitchum said of Trevor Howard, "you could never catch him acting". AND The Four Freshmen 1960 The Four Freshmen 2009 Charlie Parker 1950 Helen Merrill & Stephane Grappelli 1986 Carly Simon late 80s?............all on YT.

"There are elements of Maurice Ravel's 'Daphne et Chloe' in this" - you got that right!

The song brings back the flavor of older days when the world was sweeter, uncomplicated, families stayed together no matter what, God was the foundation of most homes, the chance for self advancement was everywhere. Neighbors helped each other and didn't lock their doors. It is a world gone away, which was stylish, romantic, when men and women loved each other and the dance of romance was what made life sweet, unlike today when women hit the sheets on the first date. Bring me back to the days when the chrome on the cars was thick and the tires and fins on our fabulous fifties and sixties cars were as big as our dreams. That is the world I never wanted to leave. When I hear "Laura" it just brings it all back and I relive those golden times like the needle stuck in a record on an old record player, stuck in the same old groove, same old groove, same old.....

Your memory is very selective. There were many crappy things about the old days. Just off the top of my head, remember polio? Thousands and thousands of children struck down with that horrible disease. Now we have immunizations for that and other childhood killers. I could go on, but I hope you get my point.

@@davidhull1481 Not selective, but very accurate. You simply can not compare those days to this time. Liberals usually diss the fifties and sixties, those re-writers of history. Yes, we had polio but we also had the Salk vaccine which prevented it (until now, an upsurge due to mass "immigration"). Families WERE intact, life was fabulous, especially for kids and teens. No, we never locked our door, you could walk the streets without getting raped, life wasn't ugly as it is now. I hope you get my point.

@@bethvirginiaphillips4583 oh, I got your point all right. You have forgotten what life was like for people before vaccinations, before seat belts and air bags. A life of people who were different from your white privilege, how many people had to deny their sexuality. You are narrow minded, unable to imagine what life was like for others. Spare me your small minded nostalgia.

@@davidhull1481 My dear, you sound like a soy boy now. You obviously were not there in the good days when the chrome on the cars was thick, the music was fantastic and the men were straight. At any rate, it was a better world, alas, but I will never confuse you with the facts. Liberals just can't comprehend with their miniscule i.q.s...White privilege was what gave you away to the narrow minded liberal mentality you suffer from. You really believe this stuff, and I PRAY that you will one day think for yourself and break away from the communist mindset now underway under your new president, Beijing Joe Biden.

@@davidhull1481 Ah, no era is perfect, but the fifties and sixties came pretty close to perfection, as perfect as humans can possibly get...
