2016 was my last competitive year at the CrossFit Games - and since then I've dropped muscle mass and changed my training volume significantly.
After posting a comparison photo on social media recently I got a lot of questions and comments, so I'll walk you through exactly what it takes to hold onto the kind of muscle mass and strength numbers I used to have, and how my nutrition and training has changed since then.
My goal is no longer to be the fittest in the world - it's to be jacked well into my 50s and 60s - and you can too. Sign up for my free newsletter for the Look Good Move Well Guide and ongoing workouts, recipes, training articles, and more: functional-bod...

Marcus, I consume a ton of RU-vid fitness content, and gotta tell you this was THE most insightful and interesting video I have seen in a very very long time. Thank you for sharing this in depth perspective of your past, present and futur fitness goals. Fascinating... this clip will help structure my personal approach to my own training, nutrition and fitness going forward. Keep up the inspiring work!

Thanks Marcus. I'm 56 and the past 2 years I've transitioned from traditional bodybuilding training (and eating) to more bodyweight/calisthenics training inclusive of IF all for the sake of longevity. It'b been humbling and an ego check for sure. I'm no longer the bigger guy in the gym and such, but feel much better and hoping to remain more functional into my later years. I've got shoulder and low back history from all the years of pushing iron and trying best to manage these and continue being functional and looking fit (with the goal of looking "jacked"). Thanks for your content and sharing your wisdom with me. Cheers and hope you and your family have a happy and healthy 2022

Marcus is so well spoken and explains all facets of training that other wanna be social media guys could learn from. That being said I'm the 50 year old doing the opposite of my older friends in this thread. I was a genetic phenom 25 years ago that just walked away from bodybuilding after 4 years of 7 days a week dedicated training/focus. I literally slept in the gym store room. Long story short I am having a true midlife crisis and have gone at 6 feet tall from 160 to 200 lbs ..12 % body fat in 5 months with 2 more increments of 20 lbs to go. Then I plan to go kick all the kids asses in NPC/IFBB open classic shows. As a Natty. Wish ya luck w the channel bro

Me too! It's all ego/psychological... chasing mass and heavy weight in your 50's is actually dangerous. Yeah, it sucks but everything is perspective working on one's inner self - the outer self will reflect it. Health over esthetics is a no-brainer when we're "older". Marcus, cheers to you, amazingly well said...all truth!

"Your Health Is Your Greatest Wealth!" I will soon be 70 and look in my mid 40's. How I preserved my health and physique was to listen to my body. Find the moderate way to fitness - not extremes. Eat healthy and move everyday with purpose. I also do a lot of mental work including mindfulness/meditation and keep a daily journal. I see so many men my age broken down and immobile and on a too many medications. It is never too late to be accountable and pro-active with your health. Thanks Marcus for the great info and a reality check for a sustainable lifestyle. 🚣🏻

Marcus, i really appreciated and certainly could relate to what you spoke of in this video. I’m a 65 year old personal trainer and fitness consultant and have spent the last 40 years motivating and inspiring others to get in shape and stay that way for life. I was stuck in performance mode for over 20 years teaching Group exercise and certainly experienced the exhaustion, burn out and frustration one ultimately gets to when you consistently log in 20 plus hours of weekly training. My nutrition has always been spot on and having realized the sheer volume of training was not getting me anywhere to my personal goals I shifted career goals, became a gym owner and consultant, was able to put on 10 lbs of muscle while maintaining a sub 8% BF ratio. Performance is for performance and and maintaining a fit and lean body for a lifetime takes on a different kind of discipline that one gets not from the applause of crowds and friends but from the inner voice of confidence and greater wisdom.

Thank you Markus. I absolutely agree with the part that no one is interested in my "gym numbers" now, but people will be impressed by a 50+ years old guy, who is still in good shape. And, I will feel better too. I am 33 now, but I already observe changes, when I compare myself to my 20s. Back than, I trained much harder and spent about 15-16 hours a week in the gym, on the tract, in the pool... Now I train 4-5 hours a week, but have learnt to "do it smarter". Less focus on weight, more focus on controlling the movement, knowing what I am doing, and understanding Why...

Perhaps the best video i have ever seen on learning to live with and stay within ones limits as we age. It’s hard coming to grips with losing size when we have chased it for so long! But at 59 i now realize it’s inevitable. Your video helped me process this new me and offered some amazing words of wisdom. As much as I’d love to be bigger, i have no desire to endure the pain, injuries, DOMS and fatigue. Not the excessive calories that can lead to type 2 diabetes, higher cholesterol, blood pressure and possibly metabolic syndrome which all can come with age. Fantastic video!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly. I like Marcus a lot but I thought it was insincere of him to not include a PM about PEDs at the beginning of the video because I know how these things go and no doubt in my mind that many people asked about PEDs. Totally ignored it and didn't address it at all. It was really disappointing. I'm surprised there wasn't more comments about it here.

watched this one retroactively. i know it might not always be understood in the pop fitness narrative but that extra mass takes a toll on organs and joints long term, even setting aside the focus mentally you described. i am just happy to hear your really valuing your life after competition and staying in touch with your real goals. love the vids stay frosty.
@AlanLamb11
@AlanLamb11 2 года назад
Yep, the toll on joins and organs is not something most people notice until they are older if they even attribute later issues to carrying so much mass for so many years. Hearts, joints, and digestion treat muscle mass and fat mass in a lot of the same ways for the toll it takes to carry around 24x7. My top weight while fit was 210 at 5'9 at 29 years old with a bench at 360lb 5x rep and a 18 minute 5k at 14% bodyfat. 5 years after getting out of the military I had reduced training by 80% and ballooned up to 225lb mostly due to eating as many calories as if I were still training hard and poor quality calories at that. My bench dropped to 280lb max and my 5k was 24 minutes but more importantly I felt and looked terrible. Now 4 years after that at 190lb, rep 225lb 12-16 on bench, never try for max lifts to stay injury free, the 5k is around 21 minutes but the real measure is that I feel energized and strong day to day. Cholesterol, bodyfat, and aesthetics are good though during the summer when I eat fewer carbs and add more activity I cut down to 180 lbs/12% bodyfat. The only measure I have noticeably declined in is VO2 max but that is mostly a combination of less training (particularly running/swimming) and age. The days of 70+ VO2 max are gone but aside from trying to run above 12,000 feet here in CO or compete in Spartan events vs people who have that high competitive VO2 max I don't feel the decline day to day.
@trains4nothng
@trains4nothng 2 года назад
@@AlanLamb11first off thank you for your service. i happy to hear that your being so aware around your relationship to exercise. i have ballooned up to 270 before it was a hard road to get back to 220. i am 6 ft and am more an endurance athlete, i have been doing 3-14 mile runs to work towards doing marathons but the extra weight is killing me. i do like mma though so i do alot of applied strength work(kettle bell, bands and the like) just not much hypertrophy training. working on getting to back to 200. its just a matter of time with good life style. keep kicking ass.
@AlanLamb11
@AlanLamb11 2 года назад
@@trains4nothng Many did more than I did but there is definitely a tendency to feel you are never fit enough while you are in the military because there are always people around training for crazy physical feats. Good luck on your journey! For me, the first 2 years after I had decided to make fitness a higher priority in my life, not much seemed to change. The biggest difference was after getting a stable workout routine, my sleep improved hugely. After 2 years the improvements seemed to come rapidly and compound on each other. The most difficult thing to improve was food because learning a new way to cook and new favorite foods simply took time. I found going vegetarian for a few months helped recalibrate my cravings around fat and salt.

Back in the late 90's I was training for the Olympics in 2000 in Australia. I was doing 2 sessions per day each about 1.5 hours long. I was physically exhausted when starting most sessions. The result...I got injured and couldn't go! The amount of commitment to be an elite athlete is massive. You literally live, breathe and eat your sport. Of course sport science has moved on since then and most elite athletes have a qualified coach in their corner and even doctors and lab people. I look back at those times now and just one month of that level would finish me off now. I still train but now it is for me and just to stay in reasonable shape.

Thanks for posting this! To hear that you miss hitting the big lifts but that pales in comparison to being the fit old guy. I needed to hear this. It was hard to put my ego aside and grab the smaller dumbells and kettlebells. I still go in a corner by myself but it is more so I can focus than it did not wanted people to see what I was doing.

Very down to earth response, I like it. And your choice makes allot of sense. Other things in life also take time. Got to pick your battles and manage your time to match the point of where you are in life right now. Man I can't believe how different the face looks. I'm starting to get leaner and leaner myself and my face is changing as well. Wish I could just store some more fat in my face 😂 and not on other places. Anyway have a good one, wish you the best.

Well put ... It makes me even think about more and how I train and how it's okay that I don't have to be at that mass and that weight and that performance more of longevity and preventive injuries.. thanks for making that video and posting it

I played basketball for almost 15 years and that point that I quit it is now hard for me even to watch a game cause I miss it so I know how you feel when you said you miss the strength. But, getting older and loosing the endurance means I look for other ways to keep being an athlete. Thank you for making this video.

Great stuff, man! I’m 52 yo, 6-2 and about 210lbs. I used to be a lot bigger (255-265lbs), with nearly 20” biceps. But I decided to focus on longevity vs, muscle mass. Now with 17.5” biceps, People still consider me “jacked,” especially for my age, but it’s not the same. I do miss being bigger at times, but I don’t miss the unbalanced lifestyle it took for me to maintain that much muscle. Happy New Year!

Hi Marcus, thanks for this video and your perspective. I really enjoyed your talk. Good luck to follow your way and get there, to be that fit guy in your fifties and sixties. To be fit and healthy, to be able to move your body, keep being in motion, is one of the greatest gifts in life. And beside the physique there is this gift called joy. Being in motion is pure joy for my body…

Marcus, really good content here. My "foundational" activity is running. I ran in college at the hefty weight of 138lbs. Today, I'm 50, and 190lbs. I stumbled upon CF about a decade ago and it transformed my workout life. I was a gym rat, doing bro pump stuffs for about 30-40 minutes a day, and I'd run 4-5 miles. I'd workout about 5 days a week. CF changed all of that however, I'm at a place where I'm carrying too much muscle mass and frankly, could stand to drop both muscle and fat. I'm macro aware, very however, I do like my red wine and cocktails. My hope is I can be as active at 60, 70 as I am now. I'm easily fitter than all of my peer group and leaner/stronger and have a great quality of life. That said, as you'll one day see, the body isn't as cooperative at 50 as it was when I was mid twenties or thirties. Again, thanks for sharing your story, really refreshing to see you have life after CF!

The moment people realize WHY they are training ( and I mean the REAL why generated by inner feelings, emotions, lack of self confidence etc.) they have to realize that the only fuel to train has to come from the depth of their soul. Only do it for yourself, not to be looked at or being admired. I am telling this because my psychological „history“ went like this. The „moment“ I realized this - and I needed professional help - I started to realize that I have a lack of self confidence which I tried to balance with being strong, have more muscles, endurance etc.. This „moment“ started over 10 years ago and I am still struggling keeping this „Is someone looking“-thought away and concentrate on whatever I am doing. To put it simple: as long as we stay stay in a kind of „Look mum, no hands“- mode we won‘t achieve a healthy relationship to our body/ our true self. Thanks Marcus for these honest words, many healthy years are ahead of you. From Germany, Martin

Bravo! Like I have been saying for a long while: A lot of people look good in their 20s. Some people look good in their 30s. Not many people look good in their 40s. Very few people look good in their 50s... and so forth. To extend your peak as long as possible is a long term sustainability goal, which is also in conflict with max effort daily goals. Thank you fior this reminder, for me to get back to my pre-pandemic self and goals. Approaching 50 in a couple of years. Personally, there was no better feeling than knowing that you're crushing it physically in your mid 40s. You will surely be there in your more advanced years!

love your style Marcus. Nice video. I now focus on veggies (lots of salads with 15 different veggies) fruits water and lean proteins. work out every day for 90 minutes. Hiking up hills with 2 10 pound weights (various exercises non stop) or ride my mountain bike up some hills. Never in the gym and never lifting more then 20 pounds (but 90 minutes straight so tons of reps). Feel great. Lost weight now have denser muscle. I am 57. I am a firm believer that drinking water, eating veggies, fruit and lean proteins like raw salmon and eggs before a workout gives you plenty of energy for the entire workout. You do not need supplements or powders.

Great video 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 You're giving us with the great message. Thank you, Marcus. 😊 You found out the 'Real way of life'. Coz, everybody will get older sooner or later. We cannot maintain the maximum point as the 'Superhero' forever. You make the right choice to switch the program back to the real nature of human being. Even me had ever try the bulk program (Heavy weight lifter) during the age of '20 - 30' years old. Contractory with nowsdays that switching my program to body weight & light weight training (plus LOW calories food intakes, and no supplement at all.) You are the real deal man !!! Salute !!! 👍👍👍👍👍

Great video and happy 2022! Was lucky enough to spectate each of your Del Mar and Carson appearances plus a Grit meet. It was a joy to watch your athletic feats. Solid Channel! Re: channel topic: Adjusting Volume/Substitutions for older athletes. Like some of the other commenters I am closer to 60 than to 40. Fairly fit and active. Strains and resulting compound strains/pains have become a repeating problem towards consistent training. I find that most programs and classes don't dose volume well for older athletes. Either too light (not enough stimulus and atrophy de-conditioning gets real) or too many reps (strains). How to gauge the optimum between enough stimulus and avoiding overuse (volume that is hard to recover from while maintaining regular training). Higher variation and shorter rep schemes seem to work but I'd love to hear your opinion. e.g. if there is a 5K run my choice might be run 1 mile, rest 1 min-, row 2k, rest 1, run a mile or 100 cal AB. Break up a high rep chipper in 3 rounds accumulating to the same total reps with our without rest between rounds. Mahalo!

I think you did the right thing prioritizing your family over an unhealthy obsession with GAINNNS. There's only so long the body can withstand that level of training for, so you were smart to enjoy it at the time and move on when it was optimal. Better to be the lean and jacked 55 year old, than the guy who looks buff but gets tired walking up the stairs and needs open surgery before 60. Keep killing the game and helping us do the same. Your work here on this channel is truly appreciated! 👍

In my mid twenties, I was a gym-rat and mountain biking nut. In my 30's, I became a dad with different priorities. My son wrestled throughout high school - so I started going to the gym with him. That inner 20-year-old in me loved it. My 50-year-old joints and tendons hated it. The "Wow, you're 50" and "You're killing it" comments fed my ego and I wore myself out. Had to stop. I'm recovered now from my ego-induced-injuries and I'm watching fitness videos to get inspired. It's tough to let go of that 'Get Huge' mentality - but it is my reality now. This was a great vid. Thank you.

Very well said! I spent years training the body as a Natural Bodybuilder, which as any sport does, takes a lot of work. People do not realize the amount of time, energy, and mental focus it takes outside of the gym. Sounds like you found the answer to your longevity and health. Good for you! It's not easy to make that transition.
