Needed this message today, thank you. Especially when you self-record or self-produce, the fact of comping can set up this trap of endless perfectionism that can cause you to disembody your own voice and take the whole fun out of singing when you're aiming for that final take on deadline. This gives me confidence for today's recording session 🙏

your comment is exactly how i feel! this post kinda gives me a new perspective that feels like permission to not over-perfect.

Theo delivered so many amazing lines in this interview that it's hard to list them all. And, to be fair, Ari did an outstanding job interviewing Theo.

I see where he's coming from. But I don't really value my performance abilities or my voice, so for the projects I'm working on right now, I'm planning to do a great deal of comping and post. Katzman and the other artists he works with are extremely talented and I love his process for his work. When he works with Vulfpeck, it's my understanding that almost everything is just as it came in on that take, with the exception of backing and doubling and stuff like that. He seems to uphold this practice in his solo work as well. When they recently covered Katzman's "What Did You Mean (When You Said Love)" as "What Did You Mean By Love?" they dubbed Antwaun Stanley's vocals for the very reason he's talking about here. But it was exception to the rule and they even put a disclaimer in the music video about it. I have so much respect for Katzman and the other artists under Vulf Records. They are so, so good at what they do, and if you are unfamiliar with them, I think the song I mentioned before is a great starting point. Theo Katzman's original version on his own channel and the recent cover on Vulf's channel. It's a beautiful song, and both versions are very moving. I hope to someday raise my talents to the level where "authenticity" would be a good thing. I'm not there yet. I think I'd rather write songs than perform them anyway. Theo can do both extremely well.

I recommend practicing those one-takes and get out of the box that “only people like Theo are talented enough to do this”. Chances are you are self-cancelling yourself and putting yourself in a box that you can also work on getting out of right now. If you can do something in many takes, you can do it in one. Just takes more work for sure.

@@wergeeg Agreed. And talking oneself into the position where one questions if authenticity is a good thing is honestly kind of horrifying.

My goal now (after years of not just 50, but 500+ edits per song) is to get the biggest chunk of a take that I can. If the best I can get is half a verse, I'm not ready to be recording the song yet. And that isn't about talent, that's about work and practice. For drummers and bass players, who often play the same figure over and over, the challenge is to make that song connected and make it feel spontaneous. It's not a 2 bar phrase repeated 200 times, it's a song, and your performance should be reacting to little timing alterations in the other performances.

Say that to some very popular artists today, who will splice 3 different parts of 'a word' together. 🤣😂🤣 Totally down with recording an actual performance. Was literally just discussing this topic with people ❣️👍👍👍💜💜💜

Love this! I'm 100% in this camp. I'd rather have a great take as an iPhone voice memo than a pretty good take on a Neumann that needs to be comped 15 times

It’s highly genre dependent, comping the hell out of a blues or funk track makes no sense, but not taking the time to make a pop record perfect when everyone else is, is a death sentence

@@SammyMakepeace It's tedious how readily the word 'gatekeeping' is thrown around to mean "anything that challenges me in the slightest". Theo never once said his way was the only way or the best way, but we've still got people reacting like he's telling us we're all doing it wrong.

"Nobody is allowed to have an opinion" is a gatekeeping opinion in itself.
