Massive, bleak. Bright in its darkness. Sadness, joyless despair. How could he express a fear of heights better? Emotionally, in ourselves

Born in Wigan. Must be the location of Orwell's book, Wigan Pier. The life of miners and their abusive employers. It wasn't a psychological darkness only that inspired Theodore Major, if such is the case.

A lot of this work seems derivative of Lowery , although the figures seem cowed more by nature than the ' dark satanic mills '

One criteria I have for good painting is would I be shocked to see it piled up in a corner along with the other hundreds of frameless, or cheap, chip-framed saggy canvases smeared with hideous globs of paint at the local run down thrift store. This collection would look entirely at home there.

I don't think your average artist can get those emotions and epic skies on canvas in the same way though

@@bankruptbritain6103 Any smear of paint, once its been publicly elevated by the organs of "official state art" for reasons of propaganda and power, is hard to look at in the same way again. Take away all the romanticized hype that only grows with time and understand why it has it been promoted, and you'll be able to see the smear again. Smears admittedly can be beautiful in an abstract sort of way just because of their color and the serendipitous way in which they may spread out over various textures, but in context they are worthless because nearly anyone, including animals can make them; talent, like gold or diamonds has value because it is very rare, and so the applications of the medium which are not smears but wonderfully applied uses of the material which very few can do should instead be elevated - but alas, for reasons of propaganda and power they are not, since the criteria goalposts ( for various nefarious reasons ) have been moved long ago...

Yet more dystopian nonsense! Remember what Aristotle said? "Proper art does not depict man as he is, but as he could and should be." It's a pity that "Artists" such as Major neglected the point Aristotle wanted to make. For that matter, those who sell his works also went well out of their way to ignore Aristotle in the name of their own profits.
