You have to earn an education in the development of children, the psychology of death and dying, an understanding of medical terms, procedures, and the human body. You also need to be able to know the different stages of life, brain development, how children are able to communicate, and why they might require different supports. There are many different factors that go into becoming a child life specialist that cannot be shown in just a few youtube videos. Just like many other professions, you need to be an expert to be successful, not just aware of or possess basic knowledge in the area. If your child required Child Life attention and support, you would want them to receive care from someone who is an expert in the field, not someone who only understands some basic knowledge about the importance of play and being kind to children. There is so much more that goes into Child Life. It is a growing, and fairly new profession, so it is understandable that many people have not come into contact with a Child Life specialist or learnt about all of the things they do.
