She used to write a lot more “hypothetically” or more from a character perspective. Related to her own personal struggles and of her friends and family. So not every line or word is her experience, but an experience she clearly understands. Also, the brother line “the first boy I ever loved was a brother I never had”, to me resonates as that first love that becomes that comfort for you that you likely didn’t get from a brother or father. Someone to look out for you and your vulnerability. So she drew a portait of him and keeps it in her bed x
I would really love to see your take on her unreleased song called "Powerline Valley" it's also a straightforward story telling just like selby wall but not as dark. ❤
Every time I want to die, I listen to Ethel Cain. It's probably not healthy, but it's the closest I've ever been to feeling heard. Besides, my life isn't the most healthy anyways. Ethel lets me feel unguilty for all the wallowing and trauma responses I usually have to hide, or get shunned for.
oh my god this whole time i thought this song was called half cooked when i heard cocked i was so shocked, but you made some really great points at the end of this video and it’s very sad because even if she doesn’t relate to all of the songs she writes she still feels all the emotions and hurt that comes with the topics she talks about and you can see it in the way she writes that she feels it very deeply, i know in most of her songs even if they’re based on characters she incorporates her own personal struggles within them and this song i feel really shows that but i could be wrong i’m just a listener
I recommend you Hospital Beds from Ethel Cain (There are two songs Hospital Bed I and Hospital Bed II) and Powerline Valley (Piano Demo). All three songs are really dark but i think they're really interesting.
