this song fits my heart like a glove. being in love with somebody and simultaneously trying to transform through trauma from bullying and abuse, feeling undesireable because of such…. the desperation for the second person in the lyrics and the repetition of “they’re all gonna laugh at me” never fails to crush me. one of the saddest songs ive heard
She wrote this song after watching/reading Carrie - a Stephen king novel adapted into a film (which is the footage used for this music video) . About a girl isolated in her religious home, not allowed to date or go to dances or really have friends even. And on the night she finally goes to Homecoming, a trick is played on her by some girls - they shoe her in as homecoming queen, so they can dump a bucket of pigs blood on her in front of everyone. So just like her mother kept telling her to keep her from leaving the house, “everyone is going to laugh at you”.
