How does becoming a teenager affect our emotions?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are taking a field trip to Pixar! Yes, you read that right! A couple of months ago, Jonathan and Alan got to preview the first 35 minutes of Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2 and talk to some of the geniuses behind the film. This time, they are the guests, and their hosts are director, Kelsey Mann, and producer, Mark Nielsen, of Inside Out 2. Together, they watch scenes and talk about the filmmaking process as well as the new Emotions who arrive on the scene as Riley enters puberty and navigates becoming a teenager.
Inside Out 2 is in theaters starting June 14th! Go see it in a theater near you and tell us what you think in the comments! www.fandango.c...

The little detail that stuck out to me was that Fear was almost immediately on board with Anxiety. Fear and anxiety frequently go hand in hand, frolicking in a meadow of the worst possible outcomes, with sadness or anger following close behind

I noticed that too and that is really interesting to me. I find myself kind of curious as to how the new emotions will play in the panoply of the emotional spectrum they present in this universe. It's interesting that the none of the other mindscapes we've seen have personified Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, or Ennui mostly because I would think of Anxiety as an aspect of Fear, Envy as an aspect of Disgust, Embarrassment as an aspect of Sadness, and Ennui as an aspect of Joy. I'm very curious to see how that folds into the film's universe.

Thats because fear is an emotion in control when the given risks and consequences are presented at the moment. Anxiety is what you get when the risk and consequences are still undetermined and are still to come from the future.

Small detail, but I really like the transition from "personality islands" to a more interwoven Sense of Self. When we're younger we tend to base our identities on a handful of traits and priorities (I.e. the islands) but as we grow up things get more interconnected and nuanced
@francosoria4385
@francosoria4385 3 месяца назад
Something I didn't really like is that they presented the personality islands already changed, but they couldn't really show that anything was happening with them as a whole. Still, I think that the islands were affected, but their effect is simply less relevant here, because Riley's personality is still that of wanting to have friends, and therefore that basis of his personality was not affected and so far it worked very well, as the one about the silly things with her parents or when she was with her friends. The only thing is that I would have liked it if when the identity core said "I am a good friend" that the friendship island would be activated to remind us that they work together. They wouldn't have to do it during the entire movie, but at least in the introduction, leaving a transition that the belief system and the islands go hand in hand, and of course they affect each other. Is this canon? Well, I guess so. This is how it works in the real world.

@Dairunt1
@Dairunt1 2 месяца назад
@@francosoria4385 I guess it's because the islands are not cruial to Inside Out 2's plot; you might see the friendship and goofiness island crumbling down (and maybe the boy band island crack when she pretends to not like that music), but does that really move the plot forward? Also I love the use of color in 23:00, almost everything is orange. Anxiety is already taking over.
@cairrean2412
@cairrean2412 Месяц назад
@@Dairunt1the color change reminds me of the end of the first movie, where Headquarters starts to turn grey right before the console stops working and starts greying out too. It's so subtle but so good.

We don't truly know what kind of person we become until we get older, so a sense of self not being a thing until you become a teenager and that sense of self not being set in stone and can change and evolve as you go through life is so real

I found the Emotions' bunkbeds so adorable and once again it expresses their character as the emotion they each represent like Fear sleeps with a teddybear as something to keep tucked close to him for safety, Disgust sleeps like she wants to wake up NOT feeling disgusting so she's having her beauty-sleep, Anger's moving in his sleep like's he's fighting someone, Sadness looks more curled into herself like it's a self-soothing tactic and Joy just look like she's just deep into dreamland contently.

I got lucky, I guessed the right action. I sprinted at 100 percent effort as far as I could, and after a quarter mile my legs said "STOP NOW!". And my panic was as gone as my leg strength as I had burned off all the adrenaline. I have since learned that my blood pH was too high, so oxygen was tightly bound to hemoglobin, so the most effective thing to do, if you can't sprint, is to hold your breath. This lowers pH and results in oxygen being released and activates the parasympathetic nervous and you get calm.

@@theductductgoose (Spoilers for the Inside Out 2's climax) . . . All the emotions hugging Riley (through the tree manifestation of her identity) in the end as a symbol of self-love and self-acceptance is such a simple yet genius artistic representation. Riley is characterized more as her own person in the sequel, and when she has the panic attack because of anxiety unpurposefully shattering her identity, all her emotions coming to hug her (represented by hugging the tree of her identity), led by Joy but done by everyone -- it is how that 'click' in your head really happens, and it is beautiful. When you accept all the good and the bad that you are, when all emotions work in tandem yet your head becomes so clear -- such an epiphanic monent. I know I talked about love towards self and not another person, but still, it's as much of an important form of love and it's amazingly directed in this movie!

20:27 I’ve heard this explained by a psychologist: This is called the “sympathetic system” in the body aka “fight/flight/freeze”-response. The brain can’t tell the difference between imagined “threats” (thoughts) and real “threats”, so every time you have anxiety or feel stressed up, the brain thinks we’re being “chased by a cave bear or a cave lion”. Humans haven’t evolved for thousands of years so we’re still “stone age people” in a stressful modern society. Back then, anxiety was actually needed for our survival but we don’t need that nowadays. The body and the brain is like a smoke detector. The way to get rid of anxiety/stress is to not “flee” from the situation in any kind of way because that confirms to the brain that the threat is still there. By being still and waiting it out, the anxiety will go away on its own once the brain realises there is no real threat. But this takes practise. Small steps at a time. Like this and the first movie show, all emotions are a part of life.

Okay, hanh on, psychology question: if Riley's mom has Sadness as her lead, I ASSUME that doesn't mean mom has depression, or else there wouldn't be ANY emotions at the console. I equated mom with having Sadness in point position as mom having a higher degree of empathy, which, sh*t, that means Sadness is my lead, too. I don't consider this a bad thing, but I feel WITH other people. One of my best friends lost his aunt a few months ago, and I swear to God, he was walking BEHIND me, and I could tell there was something wrong. I didn't know what had happened yet. But he walked by behind me and I went "ow."

Bingo! Mom being lead by Sadness doesn't necessarily mean she's feeling sad or has depression; it's that she has high empathy.

This would track I think. In the first movie Riley's father has anger at the helm. He also has new business ventures out there. This, to me, showcases that he is driven and passionate. Possibly easily distracted as well, based on the first movie. The layers to this are astounding.

I agree. Having that deep understanding of sadness allows for genuine empathy and stronger connections with others. Having sadness as the lead doesn't equate to depression. Rather, it's a representation of her earnest understanding of the human experience.

i am genuinely SO glad they made the choice that all the emotions clearly do what they do because they want whats best for riley, because that really is how they are in real life too. they can seem so awful and like they get in our way, but ultimately they do what they do because its our body trying to do its best with what it has, even if it gets it wrong, or hurts other people, or hurts us. i was so beyond glad to see anxiety making it so clear that even though she was doing so many things wrong, that she really thought she was doing what was right... SPOILERS BELOW the moment where the new sense of self built entirely on anxiety was formed, oh what a moment. the way anxiety immediately reacted, you could _feel_ the way she thought she did everything right, that she had a clear goal in mind for riley... but she had no idea that what she was doing was hurting her, and leading up to rileys new sense of self telling her that she wasnt good enough. anxiety wanted perfection, and thought riley wanted perfection, but perfection just isnt realistic. and striving for perfection, by all accounts, really just hurts everyone. being human isnt perfect, thats the whole point. and even more SPOILERy is the panic attack scene, the way that anxiety was in that moment, just as frozen and terrified as riley was. i cant wait to hear what others think about that scene, i personally loved it and i know other people could talk about it way better than me. i cant even say that inside out 1&2 are my favorite movies but ive still connected with them when i watched them in various ways, and they really are just so great. me and my dad were so worried that this would be a bad sequel, theres so many that have been in the past, but it really does live up to its predecessor in my opinion. i just love these two movies ways of handling psychology in the way that they do. its so, so important for people to not only talk about mental health and what goes on in the mind, but to take such care with it, and i feel like they succeeded in that. not many pieces of media do.
@GedanJ
@GedanJ 3 месяца назад
I readily agree with you, as i was watching it myself i felt that dread, anticipation. But i also understood they were doing it because they believed they were helping Riley in their own ways. People call them "negative" emotions because they dont want to feel that way, that anxiety, or fear, or anger. But one has to accept that all the many emotions one has have reason to be there, even if it doesnt feel like they need to. You cannot have light without darkness, (simplification the quote, but nonetheless) if you dont have those feelings you can't appreciate the ones you _do_ want. While i related, i also got a lot of my understanding and acceptance through time and learning, trying to understand how i and others feel. When i was in the theatre, I had thought back to a Sanders Sides video i watched not too long back, which went into quite similar things with these emotions ones are uncomfortable with. You have to understand them, nurture them into something you can manage, not let them control you if you can. Humans are complex, and so are feelings. We grow as beings, and so should our emotional complexity. But as one's feelings grow, we should grow alongside them, be allowed to feel different things instead of being forced to repress them for reasons.
@GedanJ
@GedanJ 3 месяца назад
One of the other things i really enjoy _(kinda end of the movie spoilers too)_ Is that when the avalanche of orbs fell into the river of ideals, it felt terrible in that moment, but was pivotal in Riley growing as a person. She needs both the good, _and_ the bad in her life. Joy wanted to keep all the good things but shove anything too negative to the back. But life isnt just the good moments. It's everything, the good, the bad, the normal. Having bad things happen isnt the end of the world, or an end all. It's an experience to learn and grow from, something we should accept but not stick on to. Staying completely in the negatives is not a good way to live, even if bad things happen, sometimes you just need to put a little bit of a spotlight into the good things that have happened in your life. That doesnt mean you have to forgive, forget, or think it wasnt a bad situation. It just means you shouldnt hold onto it your entire life, be consumed by that moment when you have so many more moments to experience that may be exponentially better.

I hate how much anxiety is sooooooo accurate. When I first saw her character design, I was a little insulted to be honest. Anxiety, for me, is a mentally and physically destructive monster that never stops finding reasons to fear being alive. And until today, I didn’t realize that they were aiming for the beginning of anxiety developing in the brain. I’ve unfortunately let anxiety control take control over me and my life, and as a result I’ve been experiencing health problems because of this. DON’T LET ANXIETY DO THIS TO YOU. Anxiety has been proven to not only cause nausea without relevant cause, but panic attacks, diarrhea, light headedness, uncontrollable tremors or shaking, and general loss of health. But it can also reinforce your chances of giving yourself IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), and suicidal thoughts. Of course this all depends on how your body reacts to extreme cases of anxiety; some people vomit under extreme cases of anxiety or stress, while others react by having an anxiety/panic attack. Please, please, please contact a therapist, psychiatrist, doctor, or all three if you can if you think your anxiety is causing genuine health problems that are keeping you from enjoying things you normally like and making the most out of life. Please, don’t make the same mistakes I’ve made and take care of yourself mentally *and* physically!

But it was such a visual way of explaining it that it finally clicked for me and helped heal parts I couldn’t understand.

I work with children who often have a broken childhood and/or dysfunctional family. The sense of self made me tear up. This movie is about Riley having a happy, healthy childhood and thus a happy, healthy sense of self. She is very confident about being a kind, good person because her parents have always supported her and made her feel good about herself. Seeing that scene made me think about what is going on in the minds of those broken children. All I could think of was the little voices telling them they're not good, they're ugly, lazy, not wanted. I was BAWLING. Changing those voices is an extremely hard task. You have to tell them over and over again that they're worthy, good, they matter. But those voices that were planted in their minds in early childhood.. they stay. They grow weaker, but they stay. It's heartbreaking.

I have to thank the people at Pixar for these movies. They've made a world of a difference in my life and my family's lives. My brother is on the autism spectrum to the point of having limited communication, and he often has a really hard time identifying and managing his own emotions. The first movie gave him some ability to identify how he feels, and the sequel has expanded that vocabulary. It's a huge step for him, and I'm so grateful to Pixar for giving my brother such a visual representation of very abstract concepts to help us all understand each other better.

NO SPOILERS: I saw the film opening night (Work at theatre, paid for my seat). Here's my NO SPOILERS summary lesson, AFTER studying emotions for 4 years AND being a teacher AND film major ( psychology). If I could tell ANYONE/ANYONE a lesson to walk away with in life for self it is this: IF you do not ask or make friends with your Anger, Fear, and Disgust (stress, bias, etc), then Happiness will always be illusive, Anxiety will continue to rule your identity, and you'll feel sadness but be stuck to let it out meaning won't know why you want to cry but aren't. Joy's hair is blue BECAUSE you need to ACCEPT that things are reality, not expectations, and sometimes that means to really FEEl joy, you have to accept that sadness, esp when communicating to others, can bring bright bridges and relationships. EQ is there. i like how what happens to the last emotion to touch the panel before Joy , how that white blur could be described as "feeling numb" as the other emotions are watching. I tried to tell my managers to put a chair next to our photobooth ( We only have Joy and Anger-kids have wondered where the rest are.) I tried to tell my managers to write down ANXIETY and put it on a chair so people could ALSO put their purses and popcorn on the chair while they take pics. I told them the kids could sit there and take a breather after seeing the film. The film had a chair, and tea haha and meditation. My manger ( not an educator) didn't think kids understand the subject. They do. Thanks Pixar. AND THEY HAVE THE RESEARCHERS NAMES IN THE CREDITS! FOR sure checking them out!

Inside Out 2 was definitely something special for me, as with many many people, I believe. I just finished my second-to-last GCSE exam and was at the cinema with my boyfriend. I went through pressure, panic, stress that could not be alleviated due to the need for determination to revise and succeed. When I was watching Anxiety, I was looking up to her in some moments, and as she was making this new personality for Riley, I felt that those memories really were important and would truly help her. I continued to innocently support Anxiety all until that new personality said she wasn't good enough. And then it all hit me, the build up, the seemingly over-excessive efforts, the pressure Riley has had to experience, and the vision of the filmmakers for the movie. And I cried. A weeping, snotty, uncontrollable explosion of emotions that left me shaking and tearing up throughout the whole movie, and still crying on the bus journey home. Something I haven't ever done while watching a film, and haven't done so wildly and bluntly for months on end. This movie is a masterpiece of psychology, cinematography and animation. It opened horizons for me and many teenagers who felt the same, and it let us accept the emotions we so desperately bottled up. Anxiety's unstoppable, unaccomplishable perfectionism that I so easily related to is such an enormous problem that could be mistaken for just ambition, that seeing this movie was the reassurance and support this difficult time definitely needed, at least for me. We will never be "good enough", we are flawed and this movie helped me accept that it's okay. Anxiety ignores all current achievements, everything that makes us great and beautiful, striving to survive and prepare for the future. We can only live in the present and I am forever thankful to this beautiful movie for finding the most perfect metaphor and image to help us understand that. I wanted to express my love for this movie and the hope it gave me for humanity, for the future, and for myself. So thank you, Pixar (especially Mr. Mann and Nielsen), thank you for preserving my childhood and supporting all the kids (and adults) out there going through change.

While I was watching the movie, I can feel the hatred towards Anxiety and how she’s messing everything up by projecting fantasies about the future. But during the climax all of those hate turned to compassion when she apologized to Joy and said “I was just trying to protect her.” It’s the way anxiety is and that’s how it views the future. Once you got stuck in that bubble of trying so hard in achieving your goal, everything else gets sidelined. Thanks to this movie, I got reminded that I should reconnect with myself, with who I really am. I just need to absorb and reflect to it.

I'm chronologically middle-aged and I think this movie is going to resonate with ME super hard, to the point where I kind of wonder if it will be triggering for me. In a lot of ways, I feel parked in my teens in terms of social development - autism has given me many gifts, but this one came with complications - and anxiety tends to be at the console in my head. Most of my everyday thoughts and decisions are driven by either a need to know what I'm getting into - prediction, foreknowledge, preparation, being ready for every possible what-if but especially the worst-case what-ifs - or a need to be liked, be accepted, and not end up being left behind by everyone when they realize they've outgrown me. A lot of my "to be liked" choices are monumentally stupid on some level, and it's SO HARD to remember that my anxiety wants to help when it keeps leading to things like overcommitting, burnout, and really prominent social errors.

What I really love about these movies is that even though we've seen these sorts of stories, kids struggling to adapt to new environments and situations, thousands of times before, but Inside Out (1 and 2) focus on the internal struggle and help the audience understand on a much deeper level. If the movies consisted of just the portions taking place outside of Riley's mind, it would be a serviceable movie; we would have a good enough idea of what's going on with her, but by portraying her emotions and thoughts as something tangible, we can understand and even relate to her to a much greater degree.

I thought when I saw the movie and spoilers Putting those memories in the back of her head I thought "oh she's repressing" and then when she lost herself I thought "wow if you repress enough of your memories you lose yourself" and then at the end she can barely find herself in all the repressed memories I thought "if you lose yourself it's hard to find yourself"

That core belief scene is bringing me to tears already, I had an extremely rough childhood with so many people who were disparaging of me and how I was. I could never do wrong. This was what it looked like inside of me, in my mind, except it was full of pain and harsh words and self-hatred as a child going to teenhood. I feel so much sympathy for that version of myself, she had to go through so hard. I can't wait to watch this film. It seems like a movie that would end up meaning so much to me, even then, when the first movie came out, it meant so much to me. People born in the earlier 2000's were exactly Riley's age or close to it, I remember seeing myself in her so much. Wow.

I didn’t cry as much as I did watching the first movie. Only because I felt so triggered by how realistic Anxiety’s portrayal in this second movie. No one could voice this character better than Maya Hawke and with the help of the accurate animation of Anxiety looking very messy with the nervous, anxious big smile she has, it just screams ME!😂 These guys are genius storytellers! I am so happy that now more people will have better picture of what it actually feels like when Anxiety takes over me and sometimes all we need is just an acknowledged hug🥹

seeing Anxiety pulled out Sense of Self and then threw it to the back of mind really stings as someone who had a lack of sense of self 🥲 but the journey to find it back (helped by therapy) is really worth it!

Saw this in theaters a couple weeks back and I'm not ashamed to say I ugly snot-cried for the last like half an hour of it. This film is INCREDIBLE, as someone with two different anxiety disorders I really really appreciate that Pixar went for the angle of "anxiety isn't evil, she just wants to help and doesn't understand when it's gone too far". Can't wait to see the full breakdown video for this film, I'd love to see y'alls take on the ending!

Just watched the movie today with my friend and we were sobbing! The first movie came out when we were kids and now we went through puberty so it’s kinda like we grew older with riley. So both movies are just sooo meaningful and relatable to us. The second one did not disappoint since it‘s reflecting what we‘d gone through since the first part came out and in that way it‘s very healing. Great job pixar, we need a third part with riley being a young adult!

it means a lot that one of the director's priorities was doing right by the people that loved and the crew that worked on the first one. Pixar rarely turns out a bad sequel because they consistently do that rather than what too many studios other studios do, "first one made money, welp, better make a sequel." the more i learn about psychiatry and neurology, the visuals of Inside Out have such great insight and visualization on these abstract concepts and ideas, it's just so fantastic. oh man and the open invite to see these guys on the follow-up. can't wait

Just fyi, the closed caption default is "Alan: So jealous." When anyone stops speaking, it just says that. Which may be accurate to the emotion, but I'm guessing not accurate to what is being said on screen. :)

I saw this movie last night, and in my humble opinion, they not only nailed this movie,.....they hit it all the way out of the park. It was INCREDIBLE....it was emotional, it was creative, it was STUNNINGLY GORGEOUSLY animated. MY GOD, the creativity and the detail in each scene was just perfection. I LOVED the belief system. I am NOT surprised this movie dethroned Frozen for being the highest grossing animated movie of all time. It totally deserves it. I was extremely impressed.

One cool detail I liked about Anxiety is her introduction straight up mirrors Riley's first meeting with Valentina, and they both happen simultaneously. Both meeting their idols and wanting to live up to them in their own ways no matter how twisted they are

Saw Inside Out 2 with my kid on opening day. It's amazing. We saw ourselves in the movie respectively. There are some situations that my kid experienced. Long story short, we both were in our feels. A very moving and emotive movie. Anxiety held up a mirror to me in the third act that was a gut punch to my psyche. I feel this will help open up conversations between kids and their parents as much as the first movie did. Might bring a lot of healing. Bring tissues for the laughs and the tears.

A lot of the time when a movie ends with a happily ever after a sequel seems forced, but the reason this is different is because people go through that same all of a sudden the happily ever after changes with puberty.

Coming from someone who grew up with generational trauma this movie is so important for everyone. Growing up during my teenage years I would get belittled, yelled at, shamed, told horrible things about myself etc. for expressing any emotion that a grown up didn’t agree with. Those grown ups were treated the same, even worse, growing up too so it’s all they knew what to do. This movie is really healing.
