The way she "talks" the chorus at the end in her low register voice, I picture her sitting at a table with her hand on her forehead shaking her head back and forth as if, why?

Loved the analysis! For me, the song is reminiscent of her song Red. With the line “loving him was red” it’s like she’s describing the relationship as passionate, loving, but also a bit fiery and complicated. As you said, maroon is a deeper, darker, more muddied version of red, and so I think this song is Taylor looking back on the relationship she described in Red, with some newfound perspective, and realizing that the relationship itself was deeper, darker, and messier than she initially thought. I love hearing the different takes on these songs ❤ keep up the great work!

The chorus progression is beautiful. To me, the first chorus she doesn’t say maroon until the very end as if she’s romanticizing their relationship (including the bad parts, mistaking it as just being passionate about each other) but when she lays it all out there she’s like “oh wait, that’s actually kind of dark and toxic” and then the next chorus she mentions maroon at the end of the lines, kind of like she has to keep reminding herself And finally, when she’s in the lower register, “it was maroon” is much louder in contrast to the way she’s singing in that chorus, like she’s quite literally yelling at herself and saying no this wasn’t an epic relationship. This was damaging and toxic.

This is my favourite song on the album! As the picture in the lyric video suggests, maroon is the last colour of light you see before a sunset. Could be a good metaphor for the relationship - beautiful for a moment but now the sun’s set on it.

I also interpreted maroon as a verb, "to place or leave in isolation or without hope of ready escape." That she felt desperately alone and did not know how to move forward once everything ultimately ended.

I’ve been listening to Midnights incessantly since it’s release and Maroon was my favourite song from day 1, from my very 1st listen and it still is my number 1. It’s a stunning song and I really love your breakdown and agree with all you said. I also think of the line “the rubies that I gave up” as referring to the Red album, the tracks as rubies, precious gems she produced. A legacy. The way an oyster gives up a Pearl, Taylor gave up her Rubies. Giving up can be a loss but can also be something we create and give to the world as Taylor did.

Maroon was my favourite from the first! Followed by Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve! That bridge where she says, “that’s a real FUCKING legacy, to leave”, with so much buried anger and sorrow, it’s just spitting out of her. Gods it’s good. Then the low, rich voice singing the chorus out, that scratches an itch in my brain 🙌🏻😅

I feel like the chorus and the associated colors can be interpreted both as positive and negative at the same time. "You splashed your wine onto me and how the blood rushed into my cheeks--so scarlet": Could read as an accidental spill of wine and her flush of embarrassment....or.....a vengeful toss of wine resulting in a flush of anger/hurt. The marks on her collarbone could be either hickies....or bruises.

I looove this song soo much! when i first heard the line: "Carnations you had thought were roses, that's us" i thought it is about miscommunication (mainly because i don't know nothing about flowers^^) also it starts off with very light shades of red and ends with maroon.. a very dark colour which remind me of blood.. you know when blood dries it is darker like maroon🤯

Honestly when I first heard the album, I wasn't impressed. It took a few listens and watching other reactions to realize that I utterly love this album! Each song is such A Mood. Kinda like all of her stuff, it's appropriate for different people at different times. Sometimes a song just has to wait its turn! Ok, final thoughts on your video? Addiction has this period called "the pink cloud" which is the happiness of the newly sober. It doesn't last unless the person really changes but it's a really common feeling for the addicted person to experience. Scarlet. Yes it's red but it's also a nod to how judged Taylor has been over the years, they'd paint her with a "Scarlet Letter". You know how much she reads, no way she left that out! Maroon is also the color of dried blood. So she can still feel this wound, even though it's not fresh it's not bleeding now, the mess is still there. This album is soooo brilliant because it's so good at going over old romances and regrets. This is the stuff that keeps her up at night and it's kinda dark sometimes but it's simple to understand. I've heard critics tear it apart and it's like they just missed the point. It is a retrospective album.

to me I feel like the song is her relationship with tom hiddleson or harry styles because in one of the photos during bletchella was that she was with tom hiddleson and she was wearing a burgundy shirt with a burgundy skirt. she mentioned "the burgundy on my t-shirt when you splashed the wine into me" but the song also reminds me of harry styles because “The burgundy on my T-shirt / When you splashed your wine into me” possibly plays off the One Direction song “Olivia,” which has the following lyrics: “Just thinking how I went about it wrong / This isn’t the stain of a red wine, I’m bleeding love.”

I love this song. Not my favorite for the album, but in my top 3. I love the use of color to represent the mood of the memory. It's great. Plus, the instrumental part reminds me of slowed down sirens. Like it's creating a chill vibe with a what you may associate with a love scene in the movies, but also has this undercurrent of the fear triggered from sirens. "Danger this is not good for you.". But you can't help it as it's so intoxicating. Also, I think it's about Jake for sure. That was the relationship where I think she fell the hardest, and the fastest. All the references to red, the color she associated with true love at that moment in time. The fact that red (album) was mainly about Jake. The intensity of that relationship and how that impact triggered a depression like state after. Hence the darkening of the red into maroon. The way I see it is either taken the blackening of red, or the depressed state (black) associated with her idea of true love at the time. Or you could argue the brown color as the ummm... as adding poo to the mix, or really the toxic behaviors that would taint her perspective. Turning what was one bright and promising to dark and toxic. Aka the ...poo...ification of her image of the relationship. Sorry trying to be clean...it's making it sound really corny. Lol.

What I gained from that line about the carnations, was that you see a lot of them in arrangements at funerals, and roses mainly seen towards love on like Valentines Day. So maybe he thought that they had "rose love" but in reality their love was actually "dead" maybe idk, just my thoughts!!

I saw a recent interview she mentioned the red scarf being an metaphor and got all flustered. So I definitely think THATS why her relationship with Jake gyllanhal (however you spell it, was so impactful and important. Her first real love and first time doing a particular activity *wink wink* when I heard that from her own mouth I was like okay I can totally see why she wrote sooo many songs about him even though the relationship was so short lived at least publicly. I guess they went back and forth a few times but ultimately it was short lived and up and down and like you I think of red as chaotic. I’ve been around some addictive and even abusive mostly emotionally abusive people and it’s like the highs are great we are all getting along but part of you is holding back waiting for “the other shoe to drop” waiting for them to get mad or do the silent treatment or whatever it is. I don’t have synthestesia (sp) but I when I think of red I think of passion, excitement, but also anger and chaos, unpredictability.

I think this song is about Harry Styles due to some lyric parallels; End up on the floor, Rosé, Dancing, New York, no shoes - Harry has an unreleased song called Trouble that was leaked that mentions no shoes, laying on the ground (he also mentions 13 in the song). A song he wrote in One Direction called ‘Olivia’ (Taylor’s cats name that she got around the time of their relationship) mentions stained red wine and love. There’s a video of Taylor dancing in New York with Harry and she has no shoes on. A photo of Taylor with a hickey on her collarbone when she was dating Harry. I’ve probably missed some but that’s just my thought. When I first heard Maroon I had the same thought.

Hi! I love your song breakdowns. I hadn't listened to this the whole way through yet. When you talked about it being an addictive relationship, I think of a trauma bond. To me, it's undeniable this was about narcissistic abuse. It's really hard for me to listen to. Narcissists can be very good in bed. If you don't know what you're dealing with, even when the relationship ends, it's easy to think of person in that euphoric way, without realizing the dynamic was abusive. Stress hormones + arousal hormones make it tricky!! It's sooo confusing when love is mixed with abuse. When someone is hot/cold. Jekyll/Hyde. Since she mentioned "covert narcissism" in Anti-Hero, she must know what it is. But I'm honestly a little concerned she doesn't KNOW what it is, and that she's most likely a victim of it. 💔

0:49 I’ve been stuck on Maroon specifically since October 21st. It’s my favorite off the album. So good! I agree with the Jake thing bc she wore the Red ring in Midnights Mayhem when she “randomly” picked Maroon lol but also I wonder if it’s Harry bc she talked about how grown up Jake was but Harry is the one who would have roommates and cheap alcohol lol OHHHHHH I didn’t know he had a roommate! I’m commenting as I watch obv. Lol 6:10 I am so hype about this! You referenced Clean and ATW10m and I screamed “YES”! How can I make it 17 mins lol. I love this song SO MUCH. 13:05 I agree with everything you’ve said and I think the rubies also are another metaphor for him having her “red” scarf-“it reminds you of innocence and it smells like me”. He took something from her and she’s changed forever bc of it. 15:40 yeah, intoxicating is the perfect word. I feel intoxicated listening to that part lol it takes over my body every time haha

Carnations also represent grief - so he thought he was getting the rose which represents love and romance and instead ended up with carnations - which represent grief and sorrow….it could be a metaphor for their failed relationship.m The carnation symbolizes eternal grief, love, and loyalty. This flower has long been the flower of mourning. The white carnations signify deep sorrow, combining a powerful symbol of death, sadness, and respect.
@nicoletabulai8764
@nicoletabulai8764 8 месяцев назад
If Taylor used the word carnations as a metaphor of grief, maybe it is related to All too well 10 min version because she says there “after three months in the grave" and both words are related to death. And the „lifeless frame"

It's interesting to rewatch this now because a year ago i completely agreed with you about this being about Jake and the connection to Red. But, after all that happened last year and especially with TTPD coming out, I've completely changed my mind and i think this is about Joe. Midnights has a lot of songs that listening back seem to fit more with the demise of their relationship, disguised as sleepless nights "from the past" because 1) we weren't meant to know they were breaking up yet, and 2) I don't think she knew where the relationship was going herself "roommate cheap-ass rose" - Jake was always too well off to drink cheap-ass rose. He had "organic shoes and a million dollar couch" after all "i choose you, the one i was dancing with in NY" - she choose Joe over Calvin and Tom back in NY "The rubies that I gave up" - we all suspect the relationship ended because he wanted her to "give up" the limelight and have a quiet life with him. And she did for a long period of time. Also connects to Bejewelled Just my thoughts 😊

Also în I bet you think about me, Taylor says : at your cool indie music concert every week. So Jake is a music lover, especially indie, and Taylor referenced through that line about the vinyl shelf"

The way I listen to this song regards choruses is that the first chorus (the first part of it "the burgundy on my t-shirt...") is happy and messing around splashing wine, blushing, making hickies. The second chorus I listen to as they're having a fight - he throws the wine at her, her face turns red in anger, mark on her collarbone from fighting perhaps? And the last chorus is sang as the aftermath with disbelief and regret. Also the bridge I hear as she sings the legacy part with anger and sarcasm, in a way that she's waking up and the realization hits that they are not together anymore and she instantly breaks down and this feeling is the f* legacy he's left her with.

I agree 100% that this has to be about Jake. It's a throwback to Red, for sure -- after re-recording Red, I think she has a new more mature perspective on the relationship and it's now maroon in her mind. Also it's track #2 on Midnights -- Red was track #2 on Red. And as you noted, there are a lot of connections to All Too Well. "sobbing with your head in your hands" = ATW short film. Dancing in NY with no shoes = dancing with him in his sisters house in upstate NY (maybe even in the refrigerator light). "Real fu*kin legacy" = "I remember it all too well." In all her discussions about the ATW short film, she says that Jake is also a protagonist because of the effect he had on her ( a real legacy). And ultimately, as you say, how does she make an entire song with references to red, and it's not about Jake????? It's just not fathomable to be about anyone else.

This song is about Tom Hiddleston. They met at the Met Gala in NYC 2016. They danced that night on rooftop. The color of the sky was Maroon. She chose him. Since that night the we’re together everyday it went so fast. She basically left her boyfriend for Tom. Tom wanted so much more from this relationship and she just found her new freedom. She turned down a gift of jewelry from him and that really marked the end. She lost him at that point. She will not write any new songs about Jake. That was done on her last recording of Red. Jake never offered her anything that looked permanent, he never wanted it to be anything more than it was. This song she respected this person. She wouldn’t be that kind about Jake.

You know what I think She is saying that things were scarlet....were Maroon. She is saying that cleaning vinyl at night, losing track of time, choosing someone while dancing, were all high intensity feelings. Like laughing with a best friend, like living a dream where you are in New York and dancing with the one, so high intensity but it was Maroon. Meaning it was dark but also muted. Like, those things were there but you were also tired while you were cleaning so late at night, while you were dancing with no shoes, means it had been a while since you were dancing, a tired feeling was always there, a muted feeling. It was Maroon. "How'd we ended up on the floor?" Like how did we reach here, is it after cleaning whole night or is it a different instance where they were drinking and are on the floor. You say "Your roommates cheap Ass Screw Top Rose" Rose is red, cheap ass meaning it was there from a previous occasion and they found it and just started drinking. But, one amongst them forgot in this feeling of all engulfment and ended up asking how are we on the floor? The other person reminds the Rose that's how. It is as if, she is telling us this sweet, cute out of the book incident but also cheap ass is injected there to show that it was intimate and not extravagant or the person is almost complaining that the Rose was cheap, but why was it cheap? The people here why are they drinking cheap ass rose? This question is for later though The she adoringly says after all these moments, the moments she remember from this high intensity relationships, she says I see you everyday now. Which means it is a good thing. She finally after all these things get to see him everyday And then she goes on to describe the sky. While she was dancing with the one she chooses, she looks up and she is describing the sky as Maroon. Like it was all muted. Like it was all intensity but not meant to last. It was all meant to from the beginning to go. All the moments she described till the time she sees him all the time it was all always meant to end. Then the silence came. The silence is the time when you do not speak or you do but not really say what you wish to or just can't understand why is what is happening. It was shaking blind and hazy. When you can't see clearly it is hazy and you go blind with anger or fear, you shake in fear or anger. So the not talking or silence caused fear or anger. But All too well always suggested it was fear, losing him was blue, grey and loving him was red. So it was fear and anger both How did we lose sight of us again? How did it happen? Asked in fear, exhaustion or anger. The answer because we were carnations never rose, we were never meant to be. We were muted like maroon not red, we had intensity but never meant to last. That is why they lost the sight again. Almost gives the feeling of knowing after so much time has passed tat it wasn't what she thought it was. It was not red not the whole experience, it was maroon. Sobbing with YOUR hands, she is talking to us or the other person. Saying in hindsight is it not how these relationships these feelings end. You are left hollowed after crying only when you are mourning and you have no answer. It just feels like it was painful not just for her but for the other person too. It was hard for both of them to understand that those precious moments of the beginning were Maroon. She is telling us she still feels him, the relationship, even though it was muted. I feel you. The rubies that I gave up is for me like like giving up something so precious as rubies. So she says I gave up something so precious, but I still feel its loss or the missing weight of something gone, Then she changes I choose to I lost the one. So she choose him and lost him. She never found him but choose him. It was a choose, so she had made it after considering or not considering everything. Since, she talks about the losing the track of time, dancing for too long, and losing the relationship, giving up Rubies it seems it is about spilled wine, setting sun, it is about loss. So she choose and lost. And I wake with your memory over me. Now it is gone. But the memory is not. She says it is a great legacy to leave. That is a great legacy, to leave. It is a great legacy to leave behind. Because it is not serving you. loose it. So yeah

I love every song on Midnights, personally Maroon isn't anywhere near my favorite song on the album (probably because there are just so many amazing songs on it) that being said, "I wake with your memory over me, that's a real f*cking legacy" is just one of the best lyrics I've ever heard and I am in awe.

def not about jake, makes me think about karlie kloss or harry styles tbh ''like you were my closest friend'',, (karlie and her were best friends if not smth else back then) the roommate could be either karlie's or any 1Ds member, but makes me think on the fact that rosé is still a bit socially gendered, and even today is (in my opinion, an old-fashioned thinking ) still considered a ''female drink'''. some men still don't drink rosé, could that be the case? i don't see a bunch of british young men not drinking beer tho but who knows new york has always been a bit of a reference for karlie (cornelia street for example, she was one the reasons why taylor moved to ny, etc) the whole chorus its giving me a relationship between friends that slowly and privately grow feelings for each other, it's so intimate when she says they were dancing with no shoes, and the wine splashed, and then THE LIPS I USED TO CALL HOME, so scarlet (like, maroon, like lipstick?? even tho it could be from transfering between kissing lol) but it feels like the other person''s lips were scarlet, not her own, and not from kissing, dunno ''how the hell did we lose sight of us again?'' , weren't we just friends? THAT confusing moment, that sometimes is scary ''carnations you had thought were roses'', there was this rumour that harry gifted her roses for her 1989 album release RED was about a love as intense as the color. bold, fierce, bright, powerful but over everything else, PASSIONATE. Maroon is a more mature color. it has gone through red, to end up being a deeper shade. it gives calm and warmth. it's a color that represents an adult love. jake gyllenhaal was red, he could not be maroon too dunno i'm very conflicted about who is this about, it's the second song that made me think of karlie and i'm not even a kaylor enthusiast supporter whatsoever. but i do think that harry's a really good reference too, just deffo don't feel it's for jake. we'll never know tho! but what i do know is that is one of her best songs and my favourite from the album!

i find it interesting that she calls the other person's lips scarlet. that doesn't sound like a man, it sounds like someone wearing lipstick. maybe this is another "from a man's perspective" song ?? and aren't all hickeys purple when they bruise? a red mark again sounds more like lipstick

🎉Oh my God Jake had a female roomate and close friend! I' ve always liked him and sometime feel alone in that situation. Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are close in that way. She stays by him when in the States a he by her in Great Britain. I Regarding Jake I realize most swifties dislike him but I do not. I do not find their age difference unacceptable. With John I feel completely different. Not only his age but the way he reacts to anything negitive anyone says about him like he is pristine when anyone knows about his private life will know that is as far from the truth as can be, especially Dear John. I hope we get 😢a gander at his reaction to Woulda Coulda Soulda.

I disagree that this is about Jake. Jake was so pretentious, do we think he had cheap screw cap rose? I don’t think he did. He was a pretentious asshold, not a screw cap rose guy, he was at the time nearly 30 and not drinking $10 cheap ass wine. Secondly, with the song Red, she was talking about emotions, burning red. However, this song speaks about concrete things all that are in a color or maroon. Red was emotions about Jake, this is concrete memories about colors. I don’t think they are similar. Then, the carnations he thought were roses, meaning HE thought it was something it wasn’t. When, Jake was the one who was leading her on, not her. So, I don’t see how that matches with history that we know. She was the one who thought it was something that it wasn’t, not him. I find that not to match. Are we saying that she is talking to herself? Or talking to him? But the chorus she is talking to him! YOU are the one I chose. I lost YOU. So every time she said YOU in the verses, she was referencing HIM. It is not about Jake. Just because of the color maroon, sorry she can use the color maroon and it not be about Jake. This is one of my favorite songs on the album, solid top 5. But, there is nothing that says Jake about this. Other than the color which is a deep red. I find there more similarities with other relationships than Jake. Jake just doens’t fit. She’s talking about him thinking the relationship was something it wasn’t. And I can only think of 3 people this could be able in which the other party thought it was something other than what it was at the time. And Jake isn’t one of them. And, you actually acknowledge that he thought the carnations were something else. He thought it was roses, but she thought it was carnations. So interesting the difference in interpretation of the lyrics. To me this is no not Jake. She has never written about Jake this way. Other people she has written about dancing barefoot, wine spilled, but I don’t recall that written about Jake, even ghosting them in the street with a love mark. But never have I heard her write about Jake this way. Jake isn’t that to her. Anymore. If anything, its about one of 2 other guys.

@@mendwithmere I kinda went on a tangent. But, the thing is, its all just speculation. It could be about no one, or just a combination of many. Who knows. But the fact that she writes about Red emotions (love, anger, passion) when Maroon are more concrete (rust, cheeks, wine, the sky) leads me to believe its not Jake. But, the beauty is no one knows, only Taylor.

This song is about Karlie Kloss. The 'closest friend' is a play on the joke that she was her 'klossest' friend, similar to how she mentioned 'slurring your name til someone puts me in a car' before, meaning she was tipsy and slurring her nickname 'car/Kar' and people misunderstanding that she is asking for a car, not Karlie; the 'your roommates rose' refers to them being roommates (lovers, 'and history will say they were roommates') in NYC; the 'dancing with in NY' is about them dancing at a concert where they were seen kissing and probably dancing w no shoes while listening to records (this seems to be a theme in the Lavender Haze video too, lavender being an LGB code color); the 'rubies I gave up' refers to Karlie's ruby lips, just like 'lips I used to call home, so scarlet' (no man has scarlet lips and Karlie wore that lipstick hue a lot); 'maroon' refers to a different, deeper love (not Jake who was red or Joe who is golden) as well as to be 'marooned', abandoned, deserted; 'that's a real f legacy' refers to both the memory of their love and the fact Karlie left Taylor to marry a rich 'legacy' man, so Taylor is saying 'this is a REAL legacy, not that legacy guy of yours'; 'carnations thought were roses' is a play on carnations being funeral flowers as well as an old symbol for gay couples (Oscar Wilde used to wear them for example), as well as friendship.

I feel like this song is about Tom Hiddleston for a few reasons. One being the dancing reference (dancing at met gala the night they met). The mention of lips being scarlet to me references the scarlet letter and having an adulterous relationship. She was dating Calvin Harris when she met Tom, so to me that references her cheating on Calvin with Tom. You did make me think of it differently though where now I’m questioning if it’s really about Jake

This song is about Karlie Kloss for sure.Scarlet meaning sin, forbidden also who has scarlet lips, Karlie.... They were in a relationship for a while. I don't now is she is bi or gay but she definitely prefers women and it is hidden in her songs examples: 'wear you like a necklace', 'you could hear a hairpin drop', 'lavender haze', 'hidding in plain sign' also: 'how you get the girl' ' is her talking about D. a woman...she will not say it outloud because she will loose some fans.
