Therapist Reacts to TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE (Part 1/2)

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright continue the agony of watching the Twilight saga with Eclipse, and break down Edward and Jacob's terrible manipulation and control toward Bella. To Bella's credit, she actually stands up to them a few times, but they don't seem to learn a lot about actually respecting her free will, boundaries, or consent. It's gross.

The way you put it makes it quite funny xD I think it's possible, though. ***WARNING*** If you're in a bad phase and struggling with depression, this is a summary of my personal experience: feel free to skip it and read another comment If you're not interested. I was so depressed for so many reasons from age 15 to 24 I tried to kill myself twice, with knives and then with meds. But before I started to think suicide was an option (spoiler: it's not, and it took me years to realize I was more than the poor, little, shy sexually harrassed bookworm I thought I was), I experienced severe depression. I really used to scream in bed like Bella did, because the physical pain that came with my growing anxiety and sadness was so intense I couldn't bear it anymore and it was the only way for me to deal with it. The only reason I didn't go totally crazy was because at some point in time I had to work so hard I couldn't think of my problems all the time. I had to focus on my homework and my degrees, in case I recovered. And it helped me. In the books Bella is dedicated to her homework because it helps her dealing with her broken mind. The movies don't show that though x)

When Edward sabotaged Bella’s truck, that’s literally something that happens in horror movies and is used to hyped up the hopelessness of the situation when they are trying to escape. Here it’s treated as a ‘romantic gesture which annoys her a bit’. 🤨

What annoyed me even more was that she didn't ask her dad to drive her to la push and instead stayed home like Edweird wanted and like i said, the repercussions for what he did were NOTHING compared to the severity of his actions. Also, Edward never really changed his ways, only instead of breaking her car, he used Alice to manipulate Bella and always keep her busy to keep her where he wanted her. Fun fact: Stephanie Meyer hates the scene at 10:43 where Bella actually stands up for herself. She hates it so much that she begged the producers and directors to remove it entirely or at least rewrite it. Why? Because apparently Bella was rude to both Edward and Jacob. And that her behavior wasn't "Bella" at all. I find it funny that one of the only redeemable Bella scenes in this movie is one of the only scenes the author thinks is not soft enough. It just goes to show that Bella’s wet-blanket, roll-over attitude was an intentional decision and not something that just comes from mediocre writing and poor character building.

The sad part about Jacob becoming all controlling and abusive is that it wasn't supposed to be a character assassination. It was supposed to be an *upgrade.* Stephenie Meyer has made all sorts of statements about only deciding to make Jacob a viable love interest around writing Eclipse and being perfectly prepared to leave her husband for *either* of these men if they showed up on her doorstep. Which all suggests that in her mind, all those red flags are just how a viable love interest acts.

I realized twilight is toxic when I modeled my emotionally abusive relationship to it and when we broke up, I expected to be as griveous as bella (cause I loved him so much) but I was shocked to find out that I didn't feel as empty. I thought being excessively sad and empty and depressed will show me that I loved him so much and stayed true to my emotions. It did not felt like that. I felt relieved and light as a feather. Instead of looking through a window for 4 months, I socialized with my friends, turned to my parents for emotional support and studied hard to forget him and got pretty good grades. No thanks to you stephanie meyer! Also it really puzzled me why Bella and Edward love each other "so much". They don't have anything in common, they don't laugh together and be silly (they are constantly in conflict) they don't have intellectual conversations about literature, art, politics etc. They are incredibly dull. I was never a fan of Twilight myself, but, I had a burning hatred for the series when it first started getting big, because of something between my mother and I at the time. I wanted to become a writer, and my mom supported me, but kept getting frustrated because I wasn't making progress/couldn't get anything written (due to a combination of just being too busy with college/life, and because I always have trouble with plots. I can and love to do extensive worldbuilding and character design and development, but I just can't figure out anything for them to DO.), and, with her not being a writer or ever trying to write herself, the constant critism, unwanted advice (from an unqualified source), and her pushing and having a "stop being lazy and just DO it" attitude about my writing was really grating (she's a fantastic mom, don't get me wrong, this was just one time/place where she really fumbled, as parents do. It just happens). But what REALLY pushed me over the edge was when she trotted out Twilight's success. "Stephanie Meyers wrote her book in just 3 months!" Me, firing back: "Yeah, and that book was TWILIGHT!" And she just generally couldn't understand why I would get so upset at that...until she started watching the movies (my mom is a "completionist watcher," if she starts a movie or movie series, she HAS to finish it, to "see where it goes," even if she hates it). She has never brought up the comparison since, and stopped the negative behavior after that, and subtly acknowledged the horrendous writing. So, even today, seeing people humorously rip it to shreds still feels a bit like vindication, lol.

As an introverted guy who never really got the opportunity to date until college due to my high school's Conservative Evangelical anti-dating culture, my lady was definitely more into me when our relationship started. As feelings started to swell after a hilariously awkward confession from myself, during one of our walks through a walled garden owned by the university, I eventually asked her if she trusted me enough to take off her mask outside (bear in mind, this was all happening when our classes had mask mandates for COVID-19). After looking into each other's uncovered faces for awhile, my lady asked me, "Have you ever wanted to kiss someone?" I then replied, "Do you want to kiss me?" When the two of us nodded, we both leaned in and gave each other our first (and most hilariously awkward) kiss of all time. Long story short, while she was the one to first develop feelings, we still waited for each other's consent before doing ANYTHING serious. By the looks of these Cinema Therapy reviews, I imagine there is a reason why I've never wanted to read these books or watch these movies...😂😆😂 Keep up the good videos, Cinema Therapy 😁

Ladies, the part about consent and kiss is absolutely important. If the guy leans in for a kiss and you feel uncomfortable, back away and say 'no'. If he's a respectable man, he will back away politely and apologise. An insecure person would take that 'no' personally because you've just hurt his frail ego. This has absolutely nothing to do with you. You made your point and set your boundary and that's that.

The way you explain it is a lot better than other comment. So in principle if someone goes in for a kiss, and you say no, and he backs away, that its alright even if very awkward, but that its clear that no harm has been done because he saw there was no mutual feeling in that moment and just retracted it and respected your boundaries. I just hadn’t seen it mentioned the huge difference between someone going in for a kiss and retracting it, which is awkward but not harassment, VS someone going in for a kiss and trying to continue it without consent which is sexual harassment. Becuz idk it scares me a lot the idea that i could read signals wrong and go in for a kiss, but backing away when they don’t respond, but that still hurting someone’s feelings. I have zero experience i just see super mixed signals here that a lot of ppl apparently find asking for consent unromantic and whatnot, and the cliche that only men take the initiative or first step, which i dont understand why ppl still accept this? Why shouldn’t it be the standard for women to make the first movie in terms of kissing or whatnot, the world would be a lot better that way
@observingdeeply
@observingdeeply 8 месяцев назад
I can only speak for myself on this one, but i find it very charming and attractive when a guy asks if he can kiss me or indirectly express his desire to do so. And of course, if my feeling is mutual a kiss will happen. However, if not I will decline and tell him honestly in a regular tone why. Had the role been switch, and I am the one who would like to initiate the kiss, i would do the same as mentioned above. I will either, explicitly show my desire to kiss the other person or ask them honestly. And if he declines, then that's that...there's no need to fear awkwardness, we're only human after all.@@GuineaPigEveryday

I think this was Meyer's attempt to make the age gap "less creepy," but like, when you're working with immortal creatures, the age gap is just part and parcel of the genre. Honestly, it's never really the difference in age that's a problem in these sorts of relationships, it's the uneven power dynamics. You have a person who has only lived for some teen years and are relatively inexperienced in many things versus a creature who has experienced a few hundred years worth of stuff. The older partner knows more, has seen and done more, learned more. It shouldn't matter whether Edward is 30 or 300-his overwhelming amount of experiences, on top of him being an apex predator, makes their power dynamics very unbalanced. So, trying to "fix things" by saying these older creatures have the brains of their last human moment doesn't address the actual problem.

Nope. You are very wrong. If she didn't love him why the heck did she fly over to Italy to save his ass? Why would she even try to save him a second time from the Volturi and not just ask them to change her? Why did she get depressed when Edward left her? Humans don't just get depressed because they cant get what they want. If she didn't love him why even carry his kid which Edward didn't want because Bella was in so much pain. She could have said: yeah we can abort the child. She loves them! She loves her family! Have you even watched the movies? Edward sacrifices a lot because he loves her too. Yeah he got interested of her because he couldn't hear her thoughts and her blood smelling good even though he left for a while. Even with all of that he started to love her. If he just wanted to eat her why didn't he just kill her? Why even waste your familys time to trick a bunch of vampire hunters and save her from a ballet studio. Time and time again he saves her because he cares about her.

My brother lost his cool and started ranting: "Why everytime they lie to her they say 'I was protecting you!'? Nah, you lied because you're stupid! Just be sincere!" And he's right. Edward tries to keep Bella oblivious to so many things that are important and relevant to her, like a kid who breaks a vase and doesn't want their parents to get mad. He just doesn't respect Bella's intelligence, and it's because, like Alan said, he's just an idiot.

25:40 Reminds me of Reacher & Settler theory from How I Met Your Mother. To simplify the theory is that in every romantic relationship there is a Reacher (one to chase their partner who would be considered out of their league) and a Settler (the more attractive/appealing/better character than the Reacher). This isn't necessarily bad. There was an article about this concept that it's perfectly healthy in a romantic relationship, but the important thing to keep in mind was that if you are the Reacher that you cannot stay the Reacher. Let's say you are considered a dweeb and manage to get the sexy girl of your dreams. If you don't evolve to make yourself appealing then she might wonder why she's with you. The goal is to grow as a person until you could be considered out of HER league. Now she has to grow. The article suggests that all members in the relationship have a duty to grow and change to keep the relationship healthy. Again I am incredibly oversimplifing it but it's an interesting theory.

I used to be in a youth writers’ club with a YA author who’s personal friends with Mayer out here in AZ (real tough spot, because if I name her, it’s really easy to find her club and there’s literally only like, 10 young girls in the club at a time, and it’d be easy to doxx them, so…I’ll just say that she writes YA romance and her most popular book is about domestic violence). Both of their writing advice boiled down to: 1.) if you curse, you’re stupid, 2.) promiscuous characters should be villains, 3.) it’s romantic when men want to control you, but in a certain way. I found that A LOT of their views on teen romance (and romance in general) were shaped by being LDS, and young relationships are SUPER rushed. Purity culture makes young people rush into love and romance so they can have sex ASAP because hormones. And this is what you get when you try to put a romanticized view on those kinds of relationships to screen.

I'm glad someone pointed out how creepy imprinting is even with characters over the age of consent. It basically destroys the option of choice for all involved, and everyone gets hurt. @singingwolf8997
@singingwolf8997 2 года назад
@@chadfalardeau5396 My problem with imprinting really isn't the ages. I mean, yeah, it's weird that Jake imprinted on an infant, and it's kinda messed up that (in the movies anyway) he immediately pictured her as an adult. But my biggest problem is that it's not a consensual bonding. A wolf imprints against their will, even if they're already with someone. The person they imprint on basically has no choice. They'll either fall in love with the wolf, or have to deal with an overprotective guard dog forever. There's no choices.
@miamor2624

It's basically the same thing as "soul mates", and by its nature it conflicts with concepts like destiny and free will. It would have been interesting to explore that aspect of imprinting and see how it affects the characters and their choices, if done right.

The idea of Bella was to be a blank peace of paper to have teen girls imprint there lives and feeling onto Bella. Bella was designed to have no emotions, hobbys, real friends or even family. Check out Buffy the vampire Slayer, Buffy did date Angel a 200 year old vampire, but Buffy had a strong circle of friends, cheerleading and janastic skills, a father figure in Giles, a involved mom and even a shadow self in Cordelia. Buffy was chosen to be in a long line of Slayers to kill the demons/ vampires. Even though the 2 sinaroes are very similar a teen girl falling in love with a 200 year old vampire, Buffy is all about choice, Angel never tried to dominate, control or manipulate Buffy, and the one time he did, she killed him to save the world Her choice was to kill the man she loved, or let everyone else die. Buffy was a full charter, Twilight is a cheap imitation of what was done better the first time.

You never really do we dont fully develop until 25/26. We dont know any better before that mainly because at around a young age we try to find out what love is for us. Especially since we dont know what it actually is; you have to also remember that because of still developing young people are very impressionable. That's why its illegal to date or have sex(there are other factors) with young people, you can teach or groom them into whatever you want(like a fresh canvas or clay) and they wont know any better. This isnt to say that they dont know anything, it's just all that's around them is media and the small group of people, so most dont have practical life experience to know any better. Its also why its sometimes dangerous to consume certain media a certain age until you are ready to do so.
