Taki writing „I love you“ was so smart because he knew that the name would vanish in the same way that his diary entries did. So he wrote something that was not adressed at Mitsuha’s memory but at her heart. This way, even though they did not remember each other explicitly, they knew there is someone who they dearly love which is why they find another again after all these events.

I love that the film opens with Taki and Mitsuha as adults, talking about how they both feel like they've lost something important. This helps the audience to get into the same headspace as the characters, since we also don't know what they've lost.

I absolutely love this movie. And the twist that they are also time traveling is done perfectly. Another animated movie you should look at is _Howl's Moving Castle._ It tackles war, conscientious objection, pacifism, self-esteem, and belaying your dreams for family.

Glad you guys liked this movie! A cool note about the sharpie-handwriting scene: Taki wrote "すきだ" (I love you) and Mitsuha wasn't able to finish writing her name...but she actually wasn't going to write her name in the first place. You can see that in Taki's hand is a long horizontal stroke which isn't how you would start "みつは”, the first stroke is short and to the left. You could argue that she was going for "三葉" which is the Kanji equivalent but its unreasonable to write the second character in what would presumably be a short time. In other words, she was actually going to write something else that starts with a long horizontal stroke...There's not many characters that fit this bill, depending on your handwriting style, but the character す will always start with a long horizontal line in any handwritten form. Which means that she was probably intending to write "すき" (I love you) herself. 10/10 moment.

Those scenic shots around Tokyo are actually accurate. I live in Tokyo and they’ve drawn those places exactly how they look in real life! So much attention to detail. Even the signs on the trains and things like. Its not the first/only anime to do that of course, but yeah, it’s something I love about this film.

A good handful of people think of anime as a genre when it’s really just “animation from Japan.” It’s a medium! Every genre under the sun exists within it *somewhere.* It’s really cool to hear that you guys poked around at some recommendations (even if they didn’t end up being your cup of tea) and I’m SUPER glad to see you found something you both liked!! I remember hearing someone say "Miyazaki makes the magical feel like the everyday while Shinkai makes the everyday feel magical" and I think this film is a great example of that

What I love about this movie is the dichotomy between Mitsuha and Taki; Mitsuha has her whole life ahead of her and was given purpose by the people around her which was suffocating for her and put a lot of responsibility on her while Taki doesn’t really have that and just sort of does his own things like a wanderer. It was only until they swapped bodies was Taki able to find purpose and pursue Mitsuha and Mitsuha was able to stand up against her father and start paving the way for her own purpose. It’s like they found purpose in each other.

A little translation fact about this movie the Japanese title "Kimi no nawa" translates to "Your Name is?". but it's not an every day phrase it's used when you think you know a person name but aren't sure cause you can't quite see them(like at twilight) Or when you should know some one's name but it escapes you at that moment. It's such a perfect title and it's a real shame it was lost with the English title.

That "I love you" scene hits you harder than the comet...

I think another thing that's implied to explain why they forget each other is that Taki went to the "underworld" in order to find Mitsuha again, and as Mitsuha's grandmother said earlier in the film, you must give something up to return, hence Taki loses his memories. There is so much incredible symbolism, both overt and subtle, woven throughout this film that really just takes it up a level with every rewatch. I read somewhere that Shinkai wanted to build from the idea of seeing someone for the first time and having the inexplicable feeling of knowing them...and man did he nail that. I'm so glad you covered this film, you articulated so many things that I love about it. Thank you so much!!

The biggest part of Mitsuha's "laughter through tears" is that she was going to write the same thing. She was starting to write the characters for "I love you" as well. That's part of why she laughed.

I can't recommend enough The Wolf Children, it's a great story about love, self-discovery and acceptance, it also addresses the struggle of a single parent. It's not a perfect movie but every time I watch it I just bawl my eyes out, the tone in these films is just so kind, so you can't help but feel so emotional.

As a child of a single mother, Wolf Children really hits different. It's really good, realistic and emotional. Also, if you want a gut-punching anime film, go watch Grave of the Fireflies. It's a Studio Ghibli film but man was it so different to the usual feel good movies they make. I believe it was first shown back to back with Totoro in US because of how heavy it is. This is a must watch for everyone. You'll come out as a totally different person and your life is changed forever. Your whole perspective is just altered. It's so memorable I still find myself thinking about it a decade after I watched it (I never rewatched it again because I just can't).

Your Name is possibly the most beautiful film I've watched. I cry every time I see it 🥲Thank you for the reaction video. The film is a true masterpiece.

Wolf Children is one of my favorite anime movies, and it could be a great one to do for Mother's Day! It high-key had me ugly crying. Fantastic story about life as a single mother, and it talks about raising children, grief over a lost love, watching your children grow up and eventually leave you, and trusting them to be okay!

Someone else mentioned this one as well, but I have to second "Tokyo Godfathers" by Satoshi Kon. Kon is an absolutely masterclass storyteller who died way before his time but knew how to write incredibly believable characters of all ages, often focusing on those downtrodden or outcast by society. Tokyo Godfathers is a movie about three homeless people who find a newborn on Christmas Eve and work together to return her to her parents, while also delving into the grief in each of their own lives, how they ended up where they are. It's a story that illuminates how each person truly has an incredible story, if they're only given the space to tell it. Kon's stories are a lot less child and teenager friendly (frankly not child friendly at all) than Shinkai or Miyazaki films, but I also find them a little more relatable as an adult. Another beautiful film by him is "Millenium Actress".

One of the things that I've come to love about this movie as well is the quiet mythology that lives in its margins. On the first watching or two, it's easy to just get a surface level read on the scenes with her grandma--she's teaching the traditions of the family, immersing her grandkids in the family history... But she's also subtly explaining that all of this has happened before. She mentions that their shinto temple that they run has a bunch of traditions and practices, but the old temple burned down along with all the writings, so nobody has known for generations WHY they have these traditions. Then we learn that the women of the family have been doing the body-swap thing, from Mitsuha to her mom to her grandma. We see that the traditional sake can put you in touch with someone you switched with. We see that not only is the holy of holies a crater, but on the ceiling the comet is painted. And the braided cords the family makes are a) a phenomenal use of a Japanese trope, the red string of fate, but also they allow you to better keep your memories of when you switch. It's so beautiful.

Cannot recommend Weathering With You enough. Same director, art style, and music style. Beautiful story and voice acting that hits such strong emotional beats, can't watch it without crying. To follow that up, Belle is another visual, musical and narrative masterpiece of a film with one of the most emotional realization moments for the protagonist and audience I have experienced from an anime. Love what you guys do and am very happy to see you reacting the same way as I did to one of my anime favorite films.

The moment that Mitsuha opens her hand and sees "I love you" on her hand, that was the moment that broke me in this movie. I had liked it up till that point, had an interesting premise and beautiful art, but that was the moment I was fully immersed and wanted everything to work out.

You'll find this even more interesting if you watch explanations of the elements used in the story - how the god they've been referring to, the red string of fate or Mitsuha's hair tie, the wine/sake she drank, the dance on the ritual, all connects to the story. My fave is how Mitsuha's hair tie metaphors time. It's made by connecting, separating, and reconnecting the threads just like how the lead characters timeline intertwined with each other. 🤧

Big note for the dub that made me love it is that Radwimps is bilingual and actually did all the lyrical songs in english too which for me adds so much to those moments like her seeing his message.

One thing I love about this movie is that both vocal leads had to play two characters (their character, and the opposite lead in their characters body). Not only are they consistent, but their performances are distinct enough to be able to tell who is in the body on screen just by their voice!

I would love to recomend "Wolf Children", I like it a lot. It's the story of a family, a human mother and two kind of werewolf children and how she tries to give them their best life and... I think it's a great film to see how children grow and change and also how families are not always perfect even when they really care for eachother.

Chiming in with another vote for Grave of the Fireflies. It's older so not going to be as visually stunning as Your Name, but the story of siblings trying to survive in WWII Japan is real, raw and heartbreaking.

Something that I keep coming back to, that I love you guys experiencing, is that animation isn't a genre--it's a medium. Anime in particular is viewed through such a specific lens in Western culture, and I cannot begin to tell y'all at this channel how much I appreciate the venture into these movies!! Would love to see an episode on wolf children, it deals a lot with family and a single mom raising her (wolf) children. You've done some stuff about family before, would be interesting to hear what you have to say about this one. Great video as always :] 👍

That moment with Mitsuha opening her hand to try and remember Taki's name brings me to tears every time. It's not just the beautiful music, it's not just the struggle of trying to save her village against all odds that we saw in the previous scenes, it's not just the stellar animation, the background, the voice acting that made it all happen. It's just that at that moment when they were writing their names on each other's hands, it's the culmination of them trying so hard to meet each other and they only had a couple of minutes of twilight to say everything they need to say, the most important things cuz they possibly won't have another chance to meet each other, so writing each other's names would help them find each other and they know that they gotta do it asap. What could possibly be more important than doing that at that moment? Saying that you love that person. Taki felt that making sure that Mitsuha knows that he loves her was worth more than helping her find him in the future, which is a stupid thing to do really, of course, he is jeopardizing losing the connection he has with her. But at that moment, all that was important to Taki is to show that all that happened to them with their body-swapping, this entire experience was the best thing that happened to him. That finding her through this incredible twist of faith and getting to know her made his life all that more richer and that he loves her for that. Damn

I’m so glad y’all enjoyed Your Name so much! I hope y’all will continue doing more anime, especially more studio ghibli movies!! Howl’s moving castle has a great love story, interesting themes of self-perception, and it’s my go-to recommendation for people who wanna try anime ☀️

“I love you” The mind may forget, but the heart will always remember

I love how the creator of "Your name" Makoto Shinkai perfectly captures the feeling of being a teenager in love in this and his other films. The longing, the awkwardness, and how life or death it feels, all while you are trying to figure out your life, become an adult, make important decisions and etc. I surely felt that way when I was 16-17, so I get a sense of nostalgia watching his films.

From a phycological standpoint, Violet Evergarden would be a great show to go over. Dealing with loss and the switch from war to civilian life is done so well. And she learns what the meaning of love is by writing letters for people who have their own stories to tell.

I also want to suggest Wolf Children. Anything by Mamoru Hosada is fantastic, but I think Wolf Children would be especially perfect because of the family dynamics and how different both kids are.

I love the little detail of Mitsuha falling out of Taki's bed since she's used to her bed being lower to the ground

I would highly recommend "Wolf Children" both the sub and dub are fantastic and the story centered around Hana's motherhood and children caught in between worlds and learning to grow up together even if they choose different paths is utterly phenomenal!

It's near impossible to not be moved by Your Name, I remember the first time watching it with a friend- we were clutching each other and crying hard and immediately wanted to rewatch it. I think you both should give The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Tokyo Godfathers, and Millenium Actress a watch. One is a coming-of-age, slice of life tale about a teen girl who finds a time machine and the consequences of using it frivolously. The second is dark, heartwarming Xmas story of three homeless friends who find/rescue a baby and their journey of finding her parents and also their own personal conflicts both on the street and facing the events that led them to where they are now. The last is a sliding genre tale of an interview with an iconic actress and following her life story through the movie roles she played.

I have to say that Wolf Children would be amazing for you to go over. It's not only a lovely story of a single parent, but it's also deeply emotional and has many things you could go over.

The soundtrack helps too. Even with the language barrier you’ll feel the notes and what they’re trying to convey. Still gives me goosebumps to this day.

I think the Japanese title is also a play on words！　Kimi no na wa 君の名は means (Your name/ Your name is/ And your name is?) and the word nawa means rope 縄　or cord. referencing the bonds between them. The thread of destiny. Also reference by the traditional cord weaving you see in the movie! So kimi no na wa can mean your name or your rope/ bond.

If you want a psychologically deeper anime movie to do next, please do The Boy and the Beast. It deals with the loss of a parent, abandonment, surrogate/found families from the point of view of the child in a very light, magical, Pixar way.

Any movie from these creators is so deep and amazing. Wolf Children, Boy and the Beast, and Belle also address super difficult topics beautifully.

I think the part that is important when Mitsuha opens her hand to see Taki wrote "I love you" instead of his name is that his name didn't matter. Mitsuha don't need to know his name in that moment, what she needed to know is that someone, somewhere, wanted her to survive, to fight, to go forward. His name was unsignificant. A detail. Taki not only confessed his feelings to her but also saved her life in every way. This film is really one of my all time favorite, everything about it is beautiful. If you haven't yet, I think you should watch AKIRA. Katsuhiro Otomo masterpiece that Americans actually wanted to adapt really bad but still thankfully hadn't, lol #DontTouchAkira It's very very different but Akira influenced so many both in filmaking and storytelling, will it be for anime or live action that I think it's an important watch.

I definitely suggest Wolf Children and Josee the Tiger and the Fish. They both have a similar feel while still capturing their own unique story and I would LOVE to see them be reviewed.

I second whoever recommended "Violet Evergarden", it is an episode series that also have movie specials (I have not seen the specials), but it might as well be a trilogy movie split in 12. It is graphically a masterpiece, excellently well written and has a ton of material with social interactions that Jonathan will have a lot to say.

"Howls Moving Castle" or anything by Miyazaki. The quality of the animation, the emotions and reactions of the people, will make you a fan of his work instantly. Also, "Your Lie in April". Stunning.

Beautifully made, poignant, emotionally fulfilling, but you also get plenty of laughs, especially when Mitsuha's little sister keeps opening the bedroom door at the worst possible moment.

You asked, I give. Wolf Children was the first anime movie I ever watched and it is tied as my favorite with A Silent Voice (thank you for doing that one BTW🤩). The visuals aren't as stunning as your name, although it does have its moments, but the story is beautiful and down to earth, even though is revolves around children that can turn into wolves. I rarely cry during movies but this one got me going. I LOVE IT, so please do it!

Watched this movie when I was having a hard time at college. Me and two roommates were practically in tears by the end of it. Such a beautiful film.

The fact that you put in a clip of the ATLA live action when Alan said, "Let me ruin it!" had me DYING! IT'S SO FREAKING TRUE, THOUGH! ATLA is one of my favorite shows EVER, and yet, it HURTS that the live action RUINED IT SO SPECTACULARLY! X'D Now, about this vid's movie, I have never seen 'Your Name' despite hearing about it CONSTANTLY, lol, but WOW! Now I want to see it! lol. LOVE this!

A fun fact about the ending is that; Makoto Shinkai the creator a few years back did another movie with a very similar ending sequence where the leads sort of pass eachother by and then rush to find the other person, yet at the end they just walk by without saying anything (which fits the theme of that film, that is sort of the opposite of this one but just as good) and watching this for the first time the fear that they will miss eachother as well is just 10 times more deep.

I would love if you guys did an episode on Wolf Children. It's another really amazing anime movie. Its about love and loss and family and follows this mother trying to raise of two children who can turn into wolves. So there's a fantastical element to it, but its really grounded and beautiful and I guarantee Alan's gonna cry.

The director of this film, Makoto Shinkai, has created 2 more films since this. “Weathering with you”which I believe is already available in US and “Suzume” which is in the theaters right now in Japan, should be coming to US shortly. Highly recommend both films! Particularly I’m sure Suzume will have you both balling in tears.

This movie had such a big impact on me that I learned how to speak Japanese, and am planning on moving there to teach English at some point in the future. To be more specific, it was once I learned that the locations in the movie are real. It taught me how to see the beauty in ordinary things.

I feel like "I want to eat your pancreas" (kimi no suizou wo tabetai) is really undertalked and deserves an opportunity to be reviewed by you two guys. It is such a heavy, bittesweet, and tearjerking drama but also very very heartwarming. Even when it straightforward tells you what you have to brace for, it still catches you off guard, just like life itself. I really really recommend it.

Fun fact, when they right dummy and idiot on each others faces, it’s actually a dialect thing. People in the countryside of Japan use Baka for idiot, and people in Tokyo specifically use Aho instead. So they aren’t just calling each other stupid, they are correcting each other’s dialect so they will speak properly in the location they are in

It's amazing how it's been YEARS since I last watched this movie and I still cried while watching your video. The emotions within me of when I watched it for the first time are still so vivid and deeply engraved in my brain, they just kick in, even if I only watched the snippets.

Movies and works like this just make me respect artistry so much. Everything from the concept to the execution of a piece like this is done on such a high level. The decisions made for every little shot, every music choice, every frame, and every line that was delivered by the actors feel intentional and conceptualized and I can't even conceive of the level of talent required to make it happen.

"Your Name" is definitely a "watch it twice" film, similar to "When Marnie Was There." The first time, you watch it for the suspense and the huge "reveal." The second time, you watch it so you can fully appreciate what's going on now that you know what's going on. The Japanese seem to be masters at making a "no true antagonist" story which is interesting and engaging for the audience. Edit to add, you'll probably cry more while watching When Marnie Was There the second time through than you did the first time. Edit again: I can't believe that you've never reviewed When Marnie Was There! Review it! You'll be so glad you did! Brief, non-spoiler summary: Anna is a young girl who has stress-triggered asthma. She's orphaned and lives with a kind foster-mother, but she feels like she's "outside" the "magic circle" which encloses everyone else. Because of Anna's health, her foster-mother sends Anna to stay with relatives in the country who live near a tidal lake. While there, Anna discovers that a seemingly empty house on the other side of the lake occasionally has a beautiful young girl named Marnie living there who is Anna's age, along with servants and rich parents. A mystery arises, which is never fully resolved. Who is Marnie and why is it that when Anna tries to talk to Marnie about Anna's past, Marnie seems to somehow vanish as though she never was there? Even though the mystery is never fully solved, the explanation of who Marnie is, is heartbreaking, and all the more so because of the link between them. All the same, what Anna learns helps her to come to terms with her grief over losing her parents, and she is better off for having known Marnie.

Your Name is an incredible film and being an anime fan from the 80's this is near the top of my list of all time favorites. It's so rewatchable as well. I'm sure someone else mentioned it but the reason why the message Taki wrote didn't disappear like all the texts and stuff is because in Japanese folklore, messages of love don't fade. IF Taki wrote his name, that would have disappeared. Great that you guys have seen this and I hope you delve into some more anime. I don't have any that would really fit the format of the show, off the top of my head but I'll try and think of some. It's too bad you didn't have a spoiler warning before hand because I felt the twist of the time difference was incredible. Almost as good as the twist in The Sixth Sense.

According to Makoto Shinkai, one of the inspiration of the plot is a poem by a 9th century poet Ono no Komachi (小野小町), in which the poet wondered if she could meet her loved one in dream if she thought of him while falling asleep; and exclaimed that had she know she was in a dream while meeting her loved one, she would rather not to wake up (思ひつつ寝ればや人の見えつらむ　夢と知りせば覚めざらましを). This poem captures the intertwining of love and dream, which is central to the plot of the movie. Early in the movie, Makoto Shinkai also foreshadowed quite a bit of the plot, though they could be lost to audience who don't speak Japanese. For example, the literature teacher explained that the Japanese word of "evening" (黄昏) derives from "誰そ彼" literally means "Who is he"), before introducing word "かたわれ" (Kataware), which also means "evening" in the fictional local dialect. Kataware can be written as "片割れ", which means "fragment / broken piece". "Who is he" and "fragment (of the comet)" - that's the basis of the plot! The opening song also has quite a lot of foreshadowing too. //Even being teased by the 5th dimension, I'll still look your way, So let's choose our secret sign for when we introduce ourselves again! 'Cause I'm heading out now to chase after your name//

The movie is the embodiment of Makoto Shinkai's love for animation. I love how when the "camera" pans around corners, the light dims like there's a camera with a shutter. I have to constantly remind myself that there is no camera.

All the movies by this director/animator are really nice and interesting. Garden of Words is very mature story about relationships and finding purpose in work. Five Centimeters per Second is (in my vision) the predecessor of Your Name, but with a bittersweet ending. Children who chase lost voices is a fantastic story about Grief, he was still getting the hang of directing a story and it's narrative may seem all over the place, but the visuals are just as stunning.

Your Name definitely deserves the popularity it's gotten, and I can't say that for a lot of anime or live films. As a writer, myself, what gets me about storytelling is when it makes you feel emotions you never knew you had. In this case it highlights that feeling of missing or longing something that you don't understand or know. A bugging feeling that there is something I want and absolutely desire but idk what that something is. And it's genius for the film to use dramatic irony in that the audience knows exactly that they long for each other but neither the characters understand this, you want to scream at them to give them the answer but you're also painfully aware of what they're feeling and why they don't know of the other. Just thinking about it hurts.

They need to review Ame and Yuki the wolf children. It is a beautiful movie and it tackles so many important stuff. Talks about being a single parent, raising your kids to be who they want to be, dealing with being born with an anormality, dealing with the grief of losing a loved one too. And it will just leave you in tears in the end x)

This movie is so important to me! When I first saw it back in 2017, it reminded me of a friend of mine whom I had drifted apart from. I didn’t understand why it reminded me so much of that person, when they were barely even in my life. I remember thinking, “I used to think we had a bond like theirs, but I must’ve been wrong.” About 3 years later, we learned that we only drifted apart due to a misunderstanding that was accidentally caused by someone else. And when I looked at the poster of this movie that my brother gave me on one of my previous birthday’s, it felt lovely to think, “Who knew I was actually right the entire time? We actually did share a bond like Taki and Mitsuha’s, and I wasn’t wrong or delusional for thinking it!” It was a blessing for us to reconnect, and I honestly think it saved my life. I’m grateful for it every day!

One of the anime films that I still hold very close to my heart is Wolf's Children. It's truly a very heartwarming story about parenthood, growing up, and finding your own path. It's one of the anime I wanted to watch with my mom to see her reaction.

Also something interesting is that there is only a horizontal line on Taki's hand when the twilight hour ends. But in a previous scene in the movie, Mitsuha writes her name vertical line first. This means that whatever Mitsuha tried to write wasn't her name. Perhaps she also tried to write 'I love you' like Taki did. So when you see her crying after seeing the 'I love you' on her hand, she isn't crying because Taki is stupid. When she opens her hands, she's trying so desperately hard to remember Taki who has nearly faded from her memories. And she's crying because she momentarily remembers that this person loves her and she loves him, but no matter how hard she tries she will ultimately forget him.

I know this is 6 months later, but if you're still looking for more great anmie movies to review, do the next two Shinkai movies: Weathering With You, and Suzume. The latter in particular deals with trauma and depression. :)

I’d love to see a video going over Violet Evergarden. The atmosphere and the animation was so beautiful and you can see the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the production.

I would say we need to talk about Satoshi Kon's - Tokyo Godfathers. It is a heart warming story of homeless people who find an abandoned baby. I recommend that. And as many have already said Wolf Chidren and Howl's moving castle are something what I would like to hear your opinion about

I'm so happy that you guys loved Your Name! Continuing on with the sci-fi and time travel theme, I would recommend watching "Mirai", where a young boy who was used to the attention he got since his birth, felt forgotten after the arrival of his little sister. After being fed up, he discovers a passage in their garden that can travel through time and encountered familiar people but in a different timeline which helped him change his perspective. I would also like to add "Hello World" where a man from 2027 travels through time to find his younger self and correct a past mistake. The plot twist really got me and I promise you that the title of the anime would make sense in the end.

That twilight scene 😭👏🏼 gets me every time! And the music 😭😭😭👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I love this movie so much!!!

Others have already dropped their suggestions, would love to second Belle and Wolf Children! Belle is a more recent one about grief and reaching out, while Wolf Children is about motherhood. Both are amazing films!

You guys said you could do short series so I highly recommend the anime "Violet Evergarden". I remember that having 13 episodes of 25 minutes. An absolute masterpiece of a story with beautiful visuals(in my humblest opinion).

It wasn't brought up beyond 'her hair ribbon'. Her hair ribbon is actually symbolic. It's called the Red Thread of Fate. Here is a bit from wiki; "It is commonly thought of as an invisible red cord around the finger of those that are destined to meet one another in a certain situation as they are "their true love"."

There is a lesser known anime named Paprika, which has great visuals. It's basically about dream walking and was an inspiration to Inception. Bit surprised nobody has mentioned Studio Ghibli movies apparently. Almost all of those are fantastic. Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's delivery service, My Neighbour Totoro, Grave of the Fireflys (Dark), Proco Rosso… honestly, pick anything made by them, you can't go wrong with it (except for maybe tales from earthsee and the recent 3D thing they made.)

a lot of people have been recommending The Wolf Children, so let me offer a different rec: Departures. It's also a Japanese film, with a score by Joe Hisaishi (who does the music for Studio Ghibli films, his work is iconic). it's about a cellist whose Tokyo orchestra gets disbanded so he has to move back to his tiny hometown. it's an incredibly emotional work.

Your Name really is Makoto Shinkai's masterpiece. His other works miss the mark for me, but this one - as you said - just gets it right. It's a story that shouldn't work and probably doesn't work on paper, but in practice it magically does. Others have mentioned Wolf Children, and I'll throw in my recommendation for that too. It is, in my opinion, the best film that Mamoru Hosoda has ever made and also is a story that shouldn't work as well as it does. Its take on motherhood would be a really interesting discussion.

I think mamoru hosada is the only major anime director you haven’t explored yet - the girl who lept through time and Wolf Children are two incredible choices!

This is probably my favorite movie, my reaction was the same when I first saw it. It's absolute perfection. Keeps you so engaged the whole time and you just don't see the twists and turns coming! I made everyone I know watch it without hesitation lol

18:00 You hit the nail on the head about Mitsuha “laughing through her tears”, but what I also really love about this scene is the message it delivers: Instead of writing his name, Taki chose to tell Mitsuha something even more important, and by doing this he expressed: “This is not about me, this is about you. It’s not important who _I_ am, but how special _you_ are to me.” And despite being unable to remember his name, that’s what ultimately gives her the strength to stand up to her father, to save her village, to survive. Surely you could argue that this was not what he had in mind when doing so, that it was just a teenage boy’s whimsical idea, but even then, sometimes a man ought to be a little stupid in order to make a smart decision... if that makes any sense. ---------------------- You do realize that by asking for more anime suggestions you literally opened Pandora’s box, right? Well then... I agree with the suggestions to watch “Wolf Children” (likely a must-watch for every single parent) and “Howl’s Moving Castle”, and of course Hayao Miyazaki’s two most popular films “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke” are always worth it - you could make three videos about the latter (including a “Psychology of a Hero” and a “Villain Therapy”) and it wouldn’t get boring. Furthermore, after you’ve already done Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”, it would just be proper to do Mamoru Hosoda’s “Belle” which is on one hand one gigantic tribute to the Disney movie but on the other hand still tells an original, quite heartwarming story about a teenage girl having to cope with a tragic loss and how she (literally) finds her voice again, while it’s also picking on certain aspects of modern internet culture. And especially from a filmmaker’s perspective I would recommend all works by Satoshi Kon, most notably “Paprika” for its ingenious depiction of dreams (to me basically the better “Inception”). When it comes to having another “therapy session”, “Perfect Blue” with its story about stalking, toxic fan culture, psychological terror and harassment, rendering the protagonist (and the viewers) increasingly unable to distinguish reality from imagination, might be just your thing, one of the darkest anime films out there, but truly good stuff, and, released in 1997, already relevant back then and yet way ahead of its time.

I'd honestly love to see what Alan and Jono think of both Wolf Children and Perfect Blue. One is a loving portrait of single parenthood chronicling the extent to which a parent will go in order to give their children the best life they can, the other a painfully dark look into pop figure deification, obsession, jealousy, and paranoia that has inspired various other Hollywood films. I believe they might have mentioned Perfect Blue once, but seeing a full rundown of what they think about it would be super cool.

Im glad that you guys are open minded to watch and review anime. Its really not for kids only. They have deeper meaning and themes that are more with essence and purpose than most even movies or tv shows nowadays. You can't go wrong with any Makoto Shinkai film. Suzume just released, but you've got 5 Centimeters Per Second, Weathering With You, Garden of Words, etc. Each one takes you on such a journey. The 3 I named, outside of the obvious 'Your Name', are my favorites. 5 Centimeters Per Second has left an emotional scar on me whenever I see a train.

Both of you would really enjoy Wolf Children (2012), it's a great story about a single mom who tries to raise her two children with a bit of a fantasy twist. It's really emotional and moving!

omg I'm from Japan and Your name 君の名は is my favourite movie ever so I was debating with myself whether to click on this review or not because I was worried you guys might rip my fav movie apart haha. I'm glad instead that it was throughly enjoyed and was pleasantly surprised that even despite culture and language differences the messages and sentiment from the movie actually got across to both of you who are not regular anime watchers. The power of good animation speaks out! Just one thing though Onodera-san, the lady at Taki's part time job is not his boss but just a university student a few years older than Taki and whom he has a crush on (that he grew out of eventually when he fell for Mitsuha later) 😊 By the way this review comes at a perfect timing bec it was on tv 2 weeks ago in Tokyo in celebration of the same director's new film coming out. despite it being 6 years since this movie was released and me watching it a million times already I couldn't help turning on the tv and rewatching it for the nth time. and I thought I wouldn't cry bec I knew everything that was gonna happen and yet I STILL bawled like a baby so to see you guys getting teary eyed at the ending makes me feel like it's not just me haha. There is a scene where Taki is looking at his job hunting diary and it is 2021 December then it skips to Spring (April) the next year (as in 2022) when all new freshly graduated employees start their new work in Japan. I actually forgot about the dates but I happened to go with some friends to the Shrine where the stairs is at this year literally 2022 April to see the cherry blossoms so now that I realise the significance I feel super super happy I randomly decided to go there at the fated date! 😇

I absolutely love anime and it's wonderful seeing people of all ages enjoying it. I want to recommend Wolf Children. It is story about a mother's journey to raising two childrens divided between their humans and wolf side. As a father it really struck a chord in me because it represented the hardships of a parent and a single mother.

The story and artwork combined with the soundtrack are so powerful that even just listening to the music causes my emotions to flood forth as the memories are pulled forcibly out of my soul. One of the best movies this old dude has ever watched and cried to.

If you liked Your Name, I highly recommend Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms. You will not be disappointed. It is an incredible story about motherly love and chosen family. Every friend that I have shown this movie has been a sobbing mess afterwards.

I love how you mentioned the way you went from “well its an anime for kids” to “ok this is my favorite movie” because a lot of people see anime in the same light as western cartoons where theyre just meant for kids, but in reality anime is just a vessel for storytelling that allows them to do way more than is possible in a live action setting. Some are certainly for kids but theres plenty of anime with complicated and dark themes that are meant for adults to watch and analyze. Great video!

I really recommend Wolf Children! It's such a great anime movie, and I think can be enjoyed by a lot of people not just anime fans. It has a similar vibe in terms of emotions like Your Name, but instead of focusing on a romantic story is more about a familiar love and growth and acceptance. I think you could really enjoy it and maybe find it more relatable to you because of the themes that brings.
