Lyle the Therapy Gecko started as a kind of accident. The pandemic hit, and like most of us, Lyle found himself in his mom’s basement, laid off from his job, and spending too much time online. After a few too many nights on Reddit’s streaming platform, Lyle put on a gecko costume and decided to stream himself. Suddenly, the views and calls started pouring in- and so did people's problems. Lyle found himself in a new predicament, alone in a basement acting as a therapist to the masses. In this Episode of My Life Online, we unmask the man behind the costume.

A lot of people shy away from any form of therapy because they have per-conceived notions about how a therapist will act or that they'll be judged in a certain way. They have a fear that since the therapist is educated and literally just knows MORE about how their brains work that that means the therapist considers themselves superior, or those people simply feel like they're inferior to the therapist. When this guy dresses up like a Gecko, it removes that fear even though he's not a licensed therapist, because it's like him saying "Look, this is ridiculous and I don't take myself seriously so you shouldn't either. Lets just chat for fun". That sort of environment can help a lot of people open up a lot more. The structured nature of a therapy session doesn't always work well for some and even though this guy isn't a therapist, them talking to SOMEONE is better than no one at all.

As much as therapy is a delicate work that people should be trained to do professionally its also something you're supposed to do for your loved ones all the time. Therapy Gecko is the best approach I've seen to modernized therapy, when most adults don't feel secure talking to people in a nice office with a solid career. He invokes the old feeling of the radio show "Love Line" in where the comedy is just as much of a help as talking about the issue. People, naturally, will talk when comfortable, which is the first step of addressing trauma and mental disorders. Lyle is amazing, he makes people open up and talk, which is really what all of us need.. someone that listens and feels excited when we talk.

I 100% can visualize him as a licensed psychotherapist even if he gets his degree later in life. When he’s in his 50’s or 60’s, I can just see it. Which means he really has a spot in the mental health field somewhere. I think we need to make talking about mental health a little bit less clinical and more open and this is a great doorway

of course he has a spot in the mental health field . Its wearing a gecko suit, going live and answering calls. He is doing more for mental health as a gecko than he could ever do as a small boring Jewish boy . Why would he want to be like every other therapist ? Then people would have no one to talk about the things they refuse to discuss with their actual therapist. Again..because this is important . people tell him things they would never tell their therapist. That means those issues never get fixed. So he is acutally helping these people MORE than a 400$ a hour therapist

Yo - human connection is the most important thing in life. Most people don’t realize how helpful it is to sit and listen to other people’s problems. It makes you realize you are not alone. You do not struggle alone in silence. We all struggle, all the time. And talking about it with as many people as possible is the only way to come out stronger on the other side. I think what Lyle stands for is what our society is honestly forgetting: just talking to someone who cares is therapeutic. People are often completely misinformed about what actual therapy is, and are too quick to suggest to anyone and everyone with some problem, upset, or struggle in their life to seek therapy when what they just needed was an ear. I think too many people are starting to have an unconscious belief that if they don't have a license, they can't help anyone else with their problems, and that's just not true. It can leave those suffering feeling like there's something wrong with them because their feelings or problems aren't 'acceptable' to talk about with their friends or family. Nobody wants to hear 'have you talked to a therapist about that?' when they decide to confide in someone they consider trustworthy. That's the downside of what the mental health industry (and it is a business that makes a lot of money!) is doing to our society as it continues to convince masses that 'everyone' can benefit from therapy. If that isn't damaging to our mental health, then I don't know what is.
@asmodeusguys4472
@asmodeusguys4472 3 месяца назад
I agree with u to a degree, but some people in general are just not equipped to deal with all that. Like, you can talk to your friend all you want, but ONLY talking with them is not gonna stop any underlying issues. It's just a bandaid to an already growing wound. Yeah, u should obviously talk to your friends, but just talking to them isn't gonna help them.
@LeftOfToday
@LeftOfToday 3 месяца назад
Well believe it or not, half the time, the only advice you're going to get from a therapist is 'have you talked to your friend/family about that?' so you can find yourself in a loop of friends suggesting therapy and therapists suggesting friends. It's a wonder where anyone goes for real support anymore, since that seems to be a taboo concept within therapy nowadays. It can be more traumatizing to go through therapy, and not to mention, very expensive and even unaffordable for a lot of people, and yet it's suggested as though it's anything more than a band-aid when it's unfortunately just as much so, or worse, for a lot of people.@@asmodeusguys4472

@@LeftOfToday What are you even talking about....no therapist that actually charges you would tell you to just speak to your friends as a solution. Cognitive behavioral therapy is like the most popular type of therapy in the US and its goal and program based. Modern therapy is not about going to a place and getting to be heard. Its about going with a goal in mind and the therapist giving you the tools to achieve it in a timely manner, and thats why CBT has so much scientific backing and effecitveness, because just talking to someone doesnt actually solve anything, it just gives momentary relieve of the symptoms that you are suffering. Just dont speak of stuff you have 0 clue about.
@LeftOfToday
@LeftOfToday 3 месяца назад
@@davide56 I attended multiple different types of therapy over 15 years, including CBT, which is one of the most garbage, retraumatizing methods of therapy out there that basically tries to convince the client that they are the problem for thinking the abuse/trauma they experienced is. Your precious CBT is actually a lot more controversial than you think. The whole "evidence based practice" sentiment is nothing more than a sales slogan if you look into the sketchy studies on CBT. And don't even get me started on how dangerous the medications that are being prescribed are, which are generally only tested on men btw. The psychiatric bible (DSM) is nothing more than pseudoscience, and has a history already proven for making out people who simply don't meet their standard of normal as ill (e.g. Homosexualality, feminine issues, spiritual experiences, etc). Don't believe me? Look up Paula Caplan, one of the outspoken individuals who resigned from two committees that were part of writing the DSM. She's not the only one either. Due to a multitude of reasons why psychological care isn't where it should be, some of us - myself included - consider ourselves to be survivors of psychiatric and therapy related abuse. There's more than one story to that field than you'd like to believe and speaking from experience, I am done believing all practitioners and their modalities should be put on a pedestal. If you think that psychology and psychiatry aren't big business, think again.

I've worked in the mental health field for a couple of years and it can be really draining and difficult to listen to other people's pain all day. That pain becomes your pain and when you yourself struggle with mental illness it becomes that much more important to take breaks, have some fun, relax, eat some waffles, etc. Take care of you the way you take care of others. Also you can be a therapist in 6 years or less, dude! You'd definitely get some scholarships. It feels good to have a goal. Do it! I'm on that journey rn myself Best of luck, Mr. Gecko Sir. Keep up the good work.

I do very much think this is a nice counter to the classic "insta lifestyle" where most people seem to only post the very best movements of their life, grounded more in reality. Lyle, you're great at what you do. A good listener is what most people need; you are a phenomenal listener. I'm over clinical therapy myself. Community is what people need and you are facilitating that! Amazing. Loved learning about the real Lyle here! thank you for all you do!

I have had the pleasure of seeing Therapy Gecko live. Meeting him after the show was such an experience and I always think of it fondly. He is so genuine in his interactions and I left that live show with even more respect and adoration for Lyle. He really is a blessing and I am certain many people have had their days brightened because of him.

As a licensed therapist, someone needs to fast track Therapy Gecko to an actual license. You can't pretend to be an effective therapist- everything my dude is doing is authentic, and that's why people resonate with him as much as they do. He just seems like such a genuine, chill, compassionate dude. Loved this so much.

Unfortunately they make obtaining licensure an acrobatic feat of time and monetary investment, and then he’d have to needlessly worry about the entertainment value of his show jeopardizing the licensing board he’d then be accountable to…

I haven't missed a single episode of Lyle's podcast since september 2020. I can sometimes relate with some of the callers, but I relate with Geck's feelings more often. To me, being there for others and taking care of them, but sucking at self-care is probably the most relatable thing about him. Long live the Geck!

If it need to be an explanation to what this man does its simply giving people an outlet to express themselves in a natural and well heard fashion. I really love the fact that he gives people a chance to be heard and share their pain or happyness. Its so important that we don't even realize that fully yet.

i have been consistently listening to/watching therapy gecko for a couple of years now, and recently attended his live show in vancouver. i think that even though there are some debates around the nature of ethics when it comes to unlicensed therapy, i truly think what lyle is doing is beneficial for callers -- even if it is just introducing them to the idea of therapy or counselling. there is lots of stigma surrounding reaching out, and seeking help. thanks, geck.
